Peckinpah's THE WESTERNER Complete Series Coming in February 2017
WalMart exclusive. Wish it had some special features (like commentaries), but I'll take what I can get.

This set does have some episode commentaries. I'm working my way through it now. So far the episodes look and sound very good. It includes the original appearance of the Dave Blassingame character in an episode of Dick Powell's Zane Grey Theater, so you get 14 shows. Excellent series, and some very subtle standout differences from the standard fare. When Dave yells "This is not a game!" before he throws a punch in episode one, you can feel the reach of the series. At the time, this must have been even more noticeably different from most Westerns of the day than it seems now. Dave's sidekick Brown is played by Old Yeller himself.:)

Too bad they didn't include the episode from DICK POWELL THEATER in which Lee Marvin plays Dave Blassingame.
Overall it was a nice series. |
