Since its inception in 2005 the goal of this challenge has been to watch 100 horror films in a month's time. Obviously that's not an attainable goal for everyone, so your personal goal is of your choosing. Whether it's achieved, surpassed or beyond your reach, the ultimate goal here is to enjoy yourself while conversing with fellow genre fans. Creating a List. As always, there will be a separate list thread posted roughly 2 weeks prior (possibly sooner!) to the October 1st start date. Be creative and personalize your list however you wish - give reviews, post pics, link to your blog or start one on your page, provide IMDB links with your titles, add YouTube videos, include running times, etc. The forum software now allows for unlimited post length, although you're still welcome to post it in a weekly or biweekly format. Also be aware the image limit has been raised from 35 to 60. And it's not a bad idea to provide a link to the list in your signature for easier access. The date for list completion is November 15. The only mandatory rule here is NUMBER YOUR LISTS! What Counts? If you're uncertain of the title's genre classification the IMDB and AllMovie are the go-to sources for determining its potential horror movie status. Need more confirmation? A third and fourth option exists and that is FlickChart (requires free sign up) and TMDB. Of course, any site is prone to the occasional error and if you feel that's the case asking in the discussion thread is advised. The Bees is a delightfully fun movie, newscaster style pseudoscience mixed with random bee swarming footage giving it a surreal vibe. Expecting a b movie with some camp you could do worse - it seems like each character thinks they're in a different movie with a cartoonist scientist and a melodramatic scientist. |

The Curse. I've been going down the list and reading selected stories from H.P. Lovecraft Goes to the Movies before watching the films associated with them. This and Die Farbe are this year's first time viewing standouts.
Curse II: The Bite - Obviously a tacked on sequel in name only. I was getting bored with it, until it really picked up in the second half. My favorite husky-voiced scream queen, Jill Schoelen steals the show. Cherry Tree - Exploitative Rosemary's Baby clone with gore and nudity. It's a fun ride. Kill That Bitch - Occasionally when short on time I'll watch films with shorter running times (68 min here) just to squeeze another one in. Indie horror is always a gamble and this one's only saving grace is the plentiful nudity. The Dark Power - Instantly reminded me of Fred Olen Ray's schlock-fest Scalps, but a lot more fun. Watching a drunk and slurring geriatric Lash La Rue using his signature bullwhip was a riot. Clown - I'll echo past recommendations. Makes a great double feature with Stitches. |

That's a long time favorite and I was thrilled when it was released by Criterion. My oldest grandkids all love Bewitched and I need to introduce them to I Married a Witch and Bell, Book and Candle since they were primary inspirations for that series. |

Going to be finishing off the checklist requirements on the 26th with my theme night viewing of the day. But will be cutting it close on the 100, as always. No late night Halloween view-a-thons for me as I have to be at work at 5 on Nov 1st. :(
I know I have said this every year for the last 3 years but this is probably (a lot more probably than the last few times) going to be my last year hitting the 100. Just too many life demands. |

Tonight I got in my eighth viewing of the month with the Evil Dead remake on Blu-ray. It was my second time seeing it since it's theatrical premiere, and besides the opening sequence which could be cut out(except for maybe the first half which is well done), it's a good movie with some impressive gore and gross out moments.

I have managed to make a huge dent in what I'd had piling up on the DVR. Finished off season 2 of Scream, got caught up on American Horror Story: Roanoke and am wrapping up season 2 of Fear the Walking Dead. I haven't watched as many movies as I'd have liked to, but I'm also not really forcing myself to watch stuff like in years past.

Recent views: Night Train Murders (1975) or rather The Last Train On The Left. Basically an Italian version of Last House On The Left but set on a train. Pretty sleazy with a couple of parts that made me grimace. One with a creepy old guy and another with a knife. I will just leave it at that. Poltergeist (1982) - The original and one of the best horror films of the 80's if not all time. This one still gets to me and is still intense as ever. It scares me for completely different reasons now as a parent than it did when I was a child. But it still scares me. That is impressive. Chained (2012) - This one was quite impressive until the final part where they just had to throw a stupid, unnecessary twist at the end. When are filmmakers going to learn sometimes unknown reasons make many situations all the scarier? Plus Spoiler:
Dracula (1979) - Serviceable adaptation with poor special effects that appear were the same from 1931. What really confused me is I went into this movie initial thinking it was Love At First Bite. Now that is some serious confusion. :lol: |

If anyone's looking for a European film to watch for today's theme, Shudder recently added a French mini-series called Beyond the Walls (2016). There's 3 episodes, each around 45 mins. I haven't seen it yet, but it gets a lot of good reviews.

I played it safe for today's theme. I'm not familiar with many European horror films, and didn't want to take a risk on something I might not like, so I went with something I had seen before and know I enjoyed. I watched Trollhunter, on Netflix. In retrospect, I probably could have counted one of my Hammer films though, couldn't I?

I was just looking at the British horror list, and something seems off. First of all, I saw Harryhausen films like Jason And The Argonauts, and the Sinbad movies. Also, I saw American movies like the Alien movies and other series I thought were US movies.

Are the dedicated threads for the theme night films very active? I forget to check those but haven't been watching those films this year either. From general posts I get the feeling there are quite a few participants in theme nights.
I know I've not posted as much mainly because I've watched exclusively from my unopened pile. I should comment about each film I've watched but just haven't. I've also not seen many of the films others are commenting on so don't have anything to add to the discussion.

I might make 75 this year, which, considering I've been averaging around 30-50 over the last several years, will be pretty good. Right now I'm sitting at 61, so if I can keep up my pace of at least two a day, I should have it clinched. Tonight, I'll break out Chawz (2009) (my blu if I can find it, otherwise, it's on Shudder) and then...whatever piques my fancy.

For this year's horror challenge I was able to watch two movies from my recent Hitchcock Masterpiece Collection set, Psycho and The Birds. I've seen the infamous shower scene and mother reveal along with scenes of the birds attacking but not the entire films. Both films have not perfect but not bad women as victims of circumstance. I can imagine reactions at the time after seeing these films when taking a shower or seeing a flock of birds. |

i finally got around to my Arrow Blu Ray of The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Miss Osbourne. It has Udo Kier in it and the english track dub drove me nuts. I switched to the french track with english subtitles

Hitting #100 with the first film I remember scaring the hell out of me as a kid when my father let me watch it with him: Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives. Also fits my nearly all 80s theme well. IMO, the best of the Friday the 13th flicks.

In the intro, he was talking about two other releases he did https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinderella_(1977_film) and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fairy_Tales_(film). Afterwards, he'd have friends asking to see some of the audition tapes that were awful/amusing. One thing led to another and then they decided to make a movie based around the auditions, so they put a fake casting call in Variety for Fairy Tales 2, which wasn't really going to be made. The auditioners signed a release, got a buck, and now we have Auditions. |

Just read the announcement from Tim Lucas that Video Watchdog will no longer be published. So, so, sad about this one. I didn't consider VW a "horror mag" like Rue Morgue, but a finely crafted, specialty periodical. And I hate to see it go.
Tim Lucas did specify "print" editions will no longer be published, but then he makes it clear they have know idea about VW for the near future. Fingers crossed they stay around in some form or another. Tim Lucas Announcement |
