Assume that all of these are available to all customers unless specifically listed as member only like the Welcome Package. Also remember that any preliminary codes are just that and BN could pull it, change the details or exclusions anything prior to release so always a bit of YMMV until the final release date

I randomly watched Inner Demons (2014) on Netflix streaming and maybe I just caught it in the right mood but it's top tier in my book. This is a smart documentary style film that lampoons substance abuse related reality tv (like A&E's Intervention) as a set up for a case of possible demonic possession.

Dear Horror Movies,
It's ok for monsters to just be monsters. I hate how so many horror movies stop mid-movie to explain the dilemma and often in the most awkward mood busting of ways. How this isn't some atmospheric creepy unknown it's really the displaced spirit of a mental patient due to an experimental procedure accident, stems from a really specific fake cultural tradition, it's the remnant of a child molester after vengeful parents extract revenge, or how the specter is actually from nazi experiments in the basement (these were so much cooler when they were just horror movies). It's doubly annoying when this is discovered in some awkward implausible manner like the hero stumbling on detailed psychiatric records that are just there, a friend so happens to know the elaborate back story, and especially when searching the internet provides some pivotal explanation (last time I looked up evil clowns I was not so lucky at finding these sort of details, just odd porn). In the end the 'explanations' are more implausible than the fiend was to begin with and just offer some cop out ending (get the skull of apache warchief Mangas Coloradas to his tribal resting place). I love movies with lore and mythos but it's got to be well staged and not tacked on or cartoonish (Lovecraft horror is especially good at this).

Been slowing down watching movies. Halloween just not a happy day this year. This past August we had to put down our 15 y/o Australian Shepherd. Halloween was her favorite holiday. She loved trick-or-treating until it was too hard for her to walk so much at once. But then she seemed to like passing out candy even more. For the first time in probably 20 or so years we have yet to put out any Halloween decorations around the house. It seems this year the closer I get to Halloween the more depressed I get.
We're in a new house; last year was our first Halloween here. We set up the yard with a ton of decorations. Our Aussie gleefully helped on Halloween night. Many commented on her. The kids loved her. She looked like the happiest dog in the world. It was a great last Halloween with her.
This year we haven't put one decoration up. I'm struggling with whether to do it or not. It's just too hard being this close to her passing. I'm thinking we'll close up the house and just watch movies all night. And eat a lot of candy in her honor.

My German shepherd is nearing 13 years. I've really seen him slow down a lot in the last couple of years. He has a lot of issues with his hips. I'm not sure how much longer he has, but I try to make sure he's happy, comfortable and still getting some exercise.

I like the idea of short segment anthology films but wow do some film makers use that as an excuse to show such random crap. Today I've seen vegetables turn into an oversized genital, a strange long nose creature delivery a baby by c-section, a girl go on a quest to get blood from her sister's nethers after smoking a cigarette found on a dead man, and all sorts of oddball crap across 3 different anthologies that no one would pay to see as a feature - there are no words to describe this stuff when continuity and long term plot become unimportant. Sometimes strangely fascinating but other times really over the top.
I suspect Tim Lucas is the type of person who, even if he's somehow not aware of this himself, will always need to have an outlet like Video Watchdog to express himself.
You should watch Frankenweenie if you haven't seen it already - it's a fun homage to dead pets; this might sound morbid and to a degree it is but Frankenweenie also capitalizes on that sense of longing for that favorite pet and is maybe kind of a fun way of remembering the guy.
...Tim Lucas' commentary... It was a kind of bittersweet experience, because Tim announced earlier that his outstanding magazine "Video Watchdog" was ceasing publication. Tim will go on creating commentaries, but the future of "Video Watchdog" is unknown; i.e. whether or not it will continue as a digital publication. It's a sad week for genre fans.

I remember seeing Halloween 3 at the drive-in during its theatrical run. As you say, we were confused and disappointed, expecting a Mike Meyers film. I didn't like it then, probably mostly due to the bait and switch, and have never bothered to watch it again. When I watch the Halloween franchise movies now, I skip it. Maybe I should give it another shot though. It would have to be for free though. I'm not wasting money on it until I know I like it.
I'd never seen the first two as a kid but I knew what they were about. Then I got excited about being able to see part 3 on tv and then it turned into a weird movie that didn't have the killer I was waiting to see. I don't think I ever really made it more than 30 minutes into it each time I tried.
I like it now because I can watch it for what it is and not get hung up on it not really being related to the rest of the Halloween series like I did before. Now I like it better than most of the other Halloween sequels.

Halloween III was an attempt to get back to the original concept, but it just ended up disappointing the audience because it had nothing to do with the first 2 films. IMO III is an 80s classic.

Another wicked entry in my horror challenge and this was my pick for horror anthology night. Most major holidays are covered in bite-sized horror tales. Thanksgiving is mysteriously absent. Highlights for me were: Christmas, Valentine's Day (a visual and thematic Carrie tribute), Halloween (Kevin Smith's short), Easter and New Year's. Even the lesser ones were at least interesting, and the feature has a great look and feel overall.

Witchboard (1986) - Pretty dull affair. Bad acting, plodding storyline, and lackluster kills. See it only for the Tawny Kitaen shower scene.

Watched The Dungeonmaster (1984) last night for the anthology theme. It's about a nerd with Google Glasses that gets in over his head when he gets a hot fiance.
I really wish we could do something like 25 out of 31 days for the theme nights to have it count. Halloween is hard enough since I like to go out and do something with my family, which may/may not count for the optional even.. It would really suck to have 30 days done and then not complete it because you didn't have enough time to watch a movie due to real life creeping up.
Last night was rough because I wasn't able to watch a movie until really late, so then trying to stay awake late to finish it took a lot of fun out. I've come this far and really didn't want to fail completing it with only a few days left
I think it's by far the hardest list to complete. Subsets can be watched anytime. The checklist is the same and you can use one movie to knock a bunch off but if you can't watch something one day, for whatever reason, you can never complete that list.
Sorry for the rant. Last night sucked.

Since I already watched Bride Of Frankenstein earlier this month on TCM, I went with another movie for today's theme. I revisited a classic, Frankenstein Meets The Wolf Man, a movie which contained two of my favorite Universal Monsters.

Just watched The Final Girls, which I saw got a lot of mentions in the previous thread, and thought it was very fun.
I did see Hatchet and it definitely delivered on the Mardi Gras-style T&A. Otherwise I thought it was a decent watch, and I'll probably catch the sequels this month or next year.

One of today's deals at Best Buy is The Shallows Blu-ray for 14.99. The deal could be better, but it's good enough for me since I know I'll be watching it before the end of the month. Amazon has already matched.
I introduced a friend to Black Sabbath last night. He really enjoyed it. I still have yet to watch the Italian version, though. I just can't bring myself to do it knowing I would be missing Karloff's voice. I want an ultimate edit that retains the changes in the Italian version but keeps Karloff's parts in English. I'd be very content with that.
The same friend and I have been making our way through the Frankenstein and Wolf Man sets. We watched House of Dracula last night. I don't think I care much for Carradine in the role. He just has a completely different vibe from what I expect from that character.
During discussions with my friend about different takes on Dracula, I found out he hasn't seen any of the Dracula or Frankenstein movies from Hammer. We're going to do a double feature tonight. I can't wait to introduce him to those movies. It's going to be fun.

Lugosi created the image of the movie vampire, complete with cape and thick Eastern European accent, but Jack Palance was closest to the character in Bram Stoker's novel, IMO. Lee looks fantastic, but he barely speaks in most of his Dracula films. A shame since he had such a lovely baritone voice. Lee also added a heavy sexual component to his characterization, like when he nuzzles Veronica Carlson's bosom before biting her in Dracula Has Risen From the Grave. Frank Langella was so-so, and I hate what John Badham did to the DVD. Gary Oldman's Dracula is just a plagiarism of Lugosi.

actually i think chris lee came closest to the book character in Jess Franco's Count Dracula. Chris gets my vote because of his longevity of playing the role in movies.
if we are talking best dracula film of all time its Nosferatu 1979 for me.

My pick for the definitive Dracula is Lee. Telling my friend that piqued his interest even more.
My friend is currently the perfect movie buddy for this challenge. He loves horror and has watched a ton of movies, but he has some major gaps in his viewing, ones I can't believe he hasn't seen. It's nice not only to introduce these films to someone who will appreciate them but also to make use of titles in my collection I might not otherwise use this month.

since i unintentionally started this "definitive" discussion it might be fun to get a straw poll of peoples definitive actors for the following roles (ill put my neck out there first to start it off):
who is the definitive actor (in your opinion):
1. dr. frankenstein - peter cushing
2. frankenstein monster - boris karloff
3. dracula - chris lee
4. van helsing - peter cushing
5. the mummy - boris karloff
6. the wolfman - oliver reed
7. phantom of the opera - lon chaney sr
