The Sixth Annual November Comedy Challenge *Discussion Thread* Nov 1-30, 2016

Rules

This Challenge overlaps with two well-established Challenges - October's Horror Challenge and the November-December Holiday Challenge. During the overlapping days, you can receive "double credit" by listing any qualifying items watched for those other two Challenges on your Comedy Challenge list.

It should be self-evident what titles qualify, but if you have questions about something you've never seen, check out its genre classification on IMDB, Allmovie, or metacritic, or ask about it in the discussion thread. Live events (stand-up acts, plays, TV show tapings, etc.) and audio performances (comedy albums, old-time radio shows) can also be listed.

Post your list in the list thread. Be as creative or as basic with your list as you want.

You may number (or not number) the items on your list any way you like. However, the preferred method is, as with the Holiday Challenge, any title watched, no matter how long or how short, counts as one list item. This should make it easier to record qualifying items on both lists if you participate in both Challenges.

The list thread is now live.

Free stuff!

Once again, the great folks at Hamilton Books will be providing us with some cool prizes. Thanks, GoldenWheels!

Re: The Sixth Annual November Comedy Challenge *Discussion Thread* Nov 1-30, 2016

Our distinguished longtime multiple-Challenge host DimensionX can't run the Comedy Challenge this year so I'm trying my hand at running one for the first time. If it's a disaster, I hope it'll be comically disastrous at least!

I believe last year we had theme nights but no checklist. We can discuss if that works again for us. We also involved participants in the choosing of prizes; if we get prizes, we can discuss that option again.

I'm sure you'll do fine David. If you need any help I'm sure we'll be able to chip in. I was just thinking of this challenge today for some reason. Looking forward to watching some Three Stooges and stand up acts.

Thanks for doing this. I "inherited" it myself from the original host, and I'm sure you'll do great (your first post is already better than the plain ones I did).

I'm thinking of jumping straight into the Christmas challenge on November 1st. I'm ready for the holiday season. And the Hallmark Countdown to Christmas marathon starts on October 29th.

But since most Christmas movies are also Comedies, I should be able to do both challenges.

The first post, which I copied from you from last year?

This was last year's list of themes. We can keep it, or swap in new ones.

But you added a fancy gif.

EDIT: Don't forget to add Political Comedy back into the themes.

Because you had a customized image for year 5, and I was too lazy to come up with something like that on my own.

Good one! I'll set that for Election Day, which Donald Trump tells me is November 28. Then I'll match up the other themes on their correct days for 2016. Not sure which to remove, though. My first inclination is to just drop Funny Kids off the bottom.

How about Funny Brothers instead of Funny Kids? I remember that being a pain to find something for last year...

If anyone is interested, I've seen a channel listed on the Dish Guide called Laff. It looks like a great channel for the challenge if someone has Dish Network.

Good idea to use firsthand experience. Frasier and the Marx Bros. come to mind, but I don't know what else.

I used the Three Stooges last year. Found a short somewhere. But yeah, the only other thing that came to mind for me was the movie, Step Brothers which I have no desire to watch at all.

You also have the Ritz Brothers, the Farrelly brothers, Sam and Ted Raimi, the Coen brothers, the Baldwin brothers, the Wayans brothers, the Blues Brothers (technically not brothers in real life but we can stretch, eh?), and others.

Funny kids are also easy. If nothing else, throw on a Little Rascals/Our Gang short. Then there are the "Mighty Duck," "Bad News Bears," and others.

Re: The Sixth Annual November Comedy Challenge *Discussion Thread* Nov 1-30, 2016

I seem to recall some talk in the Challenges discussion thread about doing a weekly movie. Similar to the Horror Challenge's subset movies.

Maybe we can pick 4 movies (one for each weekend). Something that has wide appeal, good reviews and is easy to find (on Netflix, Hulu or Amazon Prime). Everyone can watch the movie that weekend and discuss it in the Review forum.

Anyone else interested in doing a weekly movie?

Re: The Sixth Annual November Comedy Challenge *Discussion Thread* Nov 1-30, 2016

I can't check Netflix right now, but here are some Prime options:

Caddyshack (1980) (sports eligible!)
Hot Pursuit (2015) (action eligible!)
Scout's Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse (2015) (double credit with Horror!)
Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me (1999)
Notting Hill (1999)
The American President (1995) (Election Day eligible!)
When Harry Met Sally...
Throw Mama from the Train (1987)
Airplane! (1980) (spoof eligible!)
Hot Tube Time Machine 2 (2015)
Scary Movie 2 (2001) (horror and spoof eligible!)
Lethal Weapon 1-4 (buddy, action, and holiday eligible!)

It'd be great if some selections were on both Netflix and Amazon (don't have Hulu so can't check there)

Since many of us do both Challenges, it might be best to make the first selection a horror comedy.
