Assume that all of these are available to all customers unless specifically listed as member only like the Welcome Package. Also remember that any preliminary codes are just that and BN could pull it, change the details or exclusions anything prior to release so always a bit of YMMV until the final release date

Mini FAQ
Coupons should not work for PREORDERS , Nook, Legos, Rosetta Stone, Digital, Gift Cards, Memberships, etc. There are glitches where sometimes an excluded item will be allowed but assume that is the exception to the rule
Free Shipping is $25 (before tax/shipping) or with membership.
Max 3 GC on a single online order.
Online only a single code can be applied to an order
Return period is 14 days after delivery (possibly 30 days for members though I've never tried)
Online ordered items can returned to a local store unless it's classified as a web-only item then it's at the store's discretion to accept
The long standing Free 60 day Trial Offer was discontinued in late May 2016

The "Rules"

What is This Thing?

Since its inception in 2005 the goal of this challenge has been to watch 100 horror films in a month's time. Obviously that's not an attainable goal for everyone, so your personal goal is of your choosing. Whether it's achieved, surpassed or beyond your reach, the ultimate goal here is to enjoy yourself while conversing with fellow genre fans.
Creating a List.

As always, there will be a separate list thread posted roughly 2 weeks prior (possibly sooner!) to the October 1st start date. Be creative and personalize your list however you wish - give reviews, post pics, link to your blog or start one on your page, provide IMDB links with your titles, add YouTube videos, include running times, etc.

The forum software now allows for unlimited post length, although you're still welcome to post it in a weekly or biweekly format. Also be aware the image limit has been raised from 35 to 60. And it's not a bad idea to provide a link to the list in your signature for easier access.

The date for list completion is November 15.

The only mandatory rule here is NUMBER YOUR LISTS!

What Counts?

If you're uncertain of the title's genre classification the IMDB and AllMovie are the go-to sources for determining its potential horror movie status.
Need more confirmation? A third and fourth option exists and that is FlickChart (requires free sign up) and TMDB.
Of course, any site is prone to the occasional error and if you feel that's the case asking in the discussion thread is advised.
Just keep in mind that the #1 deciding factor regarding what counts is you and you alone.

Feature FilmsCounts as 1 entry
Short FilmsAdd them up to total 90 minutes to get 1 entry
Television ShowsAdd them up to 120 minutes (including commercials) to get 1 entry

Movies = 1 entry (despite running time)

TV shows count according to length as they're aired on TV (including commercials):

30 minute shows = ¼ an entry
1 hour shows = ½ an entry
90 minute shows = ¾ an entry
2 hour shows = 1 entry

Mini-Series = 1 entry for each day it aired

Commentaries count. (no restrictions)

Documentaries count.

A SLIGHTLY MORE COMPLICATED EXPLANATION:
Spoiler:

Concerning TV shows and shorts films:

Like the other challenges, you need four 30 minute shows for 1 entry and two hour-long shows for 1 entry. 30 minute shows typically run roughly 22 - 24 minutes without commercials and hour-long shows are roughly 43 - 45 minutes. If it's short films that are 10 minutes or less, once you hit around 23 minutes of watching them, you've reached one 30 minute show (¼ an entry). Any combination that gets you to 90 minutes can be used for 1 entry. And this is not an exact science, so if you're off by a little it's really no big deal.

When listing the TV shows try to keep them together in 1 entry.
(Example: 30 min show/30 min show/30 min show/30 min show)

For the sake of organization, it's advised that you keep a Temporary TV section at the bottom of your list until you get enough for an entry.

Why 90 minutes? To keep the continuity going with the other challenges.

Every facet of horror counts: Horror-comedies, Sci-Fi horror, wretchedly bad horror [INSERT CURRENT REMAKE HERE], kiddie horror, creature features, erotic / XXX horror, Masters of Horror, silents, made-for-TV movies, etc.

The formats and how you watch them is strictly your call -- 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, DVD, Netflix Watch Instantly, HD DVD, at the theater, on television, public domain downloads (links provided below), VHS, Laserdisc, Video On Demand, Netflix disc-by-mail, UMD, MiniDV, CED, Amazon Instant Video, through your neighbor's window, Roku, Google Chromecast, Apple TV, a Boxee Box, Amazon Fire TV, Hulu, Youtube, Pay-per-view, Betamax, via laptop, netbook, VCD, a smartphone, a tablet ...you name it. And yes, that even includes the pan & scan, edited-for-television movies that air on TBS with obnoxious on-screen graphics and commercial interruptions (NOT recommended!). Just make sure the film is viewed in it's entirety.
Row #6 - Proud to be unoccupied since 2010!
You're welcome to include non-genre titles viewed during the month in your list, but please keep them separate from your qualifying entries and don't number them.
Sometime in November there will be a results thread posted. If you wish to be included in the stats provided (aside from your number ranking), please include the following in your list:

- First time viewings. The thing is a commonly used symbol.
- Formats viewed. (BD, DVD, NWI, etc.)
- Your personal goal ...even if it happens to be the challenge's goal of 100.

Keep it civil. The intention here is to have fun, so please don't take this event started by a guy with just a little too much time on his hands that seriously.

THE OPTIONAL STUFF
LISTS ARE ON PAGE 2 OF THIS THREAD & IN THE LIST THREAD

THEME NIGHTS
31 FILM SUBSET
THE CHECKLIST
3 WILD CARDS
This adds daily "themes" with accompanying links to horror sub-genres, studios, actors, directors and even a group marathon with the intention of watching said content on the designated day. This year's list is HERE..
Watch these 31 films on the listed day, with group discussion starting the next morning or at your own leisure. Feel free to join the discussion regardless of whether or not you watch them.

Also, the threads from the 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 Subset Lists and even the short-lived HFC List can be used for individual discussion if desired. This year's list is HERE.
.
Complete it and feel a sense of accomplishment. The Expanded Checklist is HERE.

***Please include within spoiler tags to keep the list thread from running a mile long.***
Use for titles that lie outside the horror genre and normally wouldn't qualify or for those questionable titles you're not 100% certain about. They can also be used to count titles that aren't intended to be included as a full entry (I.E. a leftover 30-minute TV episode or short film). You have 3 so use them wisely.

For every 100 movies watched, you earn 1 extra wild card.
PRE-CHALLENGE THREAD ALERT!
HELP BUILD THE OPTIONAL TABLES HERE.

HELPFUL TIPS & VARIOUS LINKS

LINKS UPDATED, BUT MORE IS COMING!

Provide a link to your list in your signature.
Review it. Even if it's just a mini-review, a simple / or one word description.
Subscribe to this thread for the latest posts (Thread Tools → Subscribe to this Thread).

Create a list in advance of what you plan to watch utilizing a site such as:
iCheckMovies | Listal
| Listology | ListPhile | FlickChart | Ranker.

If you're indecisive and can't decide what to watch next copy/paste your titles into the List Randomizer (via random.org).

If you're doing a checklist, putting it in a spoiler tag makes the list thread much easier to read.
Increase your coffee consumption.
Insomniac? Use your disadvantage to your advantage!
Work from home? Ditto.
Save the supplemental material for November!
Boredom setting in? Watch another movie!
Stay within your comfort level and try not to get too caught up in the numbers.
ENJOY YOURSELF!

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 12th Annual October Horror Movie Challenge (Oct 1-31) Pt

Just caught House on Straw Hill and there's quite a few similarities to Straw Dogs right down to the title. Not that that's necessarily a bad thing. Udo Kier's great as usual, but why do they always have to dub his voice? And this is the first time I remember a star (Susan Linda Hayden aka Susan George's doppelganger) completely shitting on the movie during the featurette.

Also the "Ban the Sadist Videos" doc on the second disc of the Severin disc (and streaming on Exploitation.TV) isn't a bad way to dip your toes in the water on the subject. I'm sure it isn't as in-depth as the two Severin ones I need to watch, but that's a lot of hours to commit to during the challenge. Maybe afterward.

Now to back to the Udo two-fer with Blood for Dracula...

I was thinking for tomorrow's theme I would do a marathon of all four Species films. I've heard very bad things about the third and fourth films, but I bought the double feature BD during Scream's summer sale. Any compelling reason why I should change to a different game plan? As in, would this put a sour taste in my so far quite yummy and scrumptious challenge?

I've only seen the first one.

I think I've only seen the first two, but might join you in marathoning them all.

I'm only partially ashamed to admit that I own a lot of Species discs. Between the original release, special edition, box set with exclusive bonus disc, and then the blu-ray, I own Species at least 4 times, probably more.

The Exorcist part III (1990)

A criminally underrated sequel, William Peter Blatty's The Exorcist part III features genuine scares, and great performances. While it doesn't live up to the original, it manages to stand on its own as a good movie, and wash away the stink of the second film. George C. Scott plays a gruff, cynical cop investigating a series of murders in Georgetown. Things get personal when Scott's friend Father Dyer is exsanguinated. A mental patient known as the Gemini Killer asks to meet with him, and Scott is shocked to find that he looks remarkably like Father Karras from the first movie. The scenes between Scott and Brad Douriff are the real highlights of the film.

I'm amazed to find out the studio wanted to get rid of Douriff and refilm all of his scenes with Jason Miller, who played Karras, because I think Douriff really steals the show. He gives an electric, unsettling performance, and every scene he's in is fascinating and scary. I know the film suffered a bit from creative differences between the director and the studio, but I find it really enjoyable despite these issues. I actually enjoyed the brief exorcism scene at the end, even if it feels tacked on. There's nothing I can add about the famous jump scare, but it lives up to the hype. I'm interested in seeing the director's cut from Scream Factory someday, but I'm actually quite satisfied with the film in its current incarnation.

Lord of Illusions (1995)

Clive Barker's stars Scott Bakula as a private eye going up against a religious cult run by a powerful magician. Bakula feels like a classic character out of an old school detective movie, and Famke Janssen is effective as the seductive femme fatale. Daniel von Bargen plays Nix, and evil sorcerer who has amassed a cultish following. He's pretty menacing, but I can't help but be reminded of Seinfeld when he's on screen. Kevin J O'Connor plays the illusionist who previously defeated Nix, and is featured in the film's most startling and spectacular set piece, involving a stage illusion gone horribly wrong.

Lord of Illusions should satisfy Clive Barker fans, it features some disturbing moments and creepy characters. Barker handles magic in a convincing way, that could have been cheesy in other movies. The opening sequence where O'Connor manages to stop and bind Nix is really cool, and some of Nix's followers are queerly scary. Some of the special effects are a bit dated, but the pros outweigh the cons in this interesting horror film.

Well I'm not ashamed to admit I now covet your box set with bonus that I didn't even know existed. But if you're in for the marathon too then I'll dive into it and we'll see how we do coming out the other side.

I saw Snowtown Murders a few years ago but really enjoyed jt - it's a nasty true crime movie.... my wife is a true crime buff so I reluctantly agreed to watch it was her and ended up liking it (I rated it a 7 out of 10). It feels mean spirited at times and skirts the line between 'thriller' and horror (if there is one) but brutal enough.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 12th Annual October Horror Movie Challenge (Oct 1-31) Pt

So I've hit my usual roadblock with 4 viewings. Worked all day yesterday and crashed on the couch watching Bride of Frankenstein (no worries though, my Frankenstein Legacy Collection arrived today). Was running errands all day today, packing, and hanging with the fam as I am going out of town for work for a week starting tomorrow. I loaded up my iPod with mostly horror and hope to watch 1-2 movies during the 4 hr plane ride. The work days are long and start early so I'll see what I can fit in at night via streaming. I am basically playing this week by ear.

Agreed and about the rating I gave it (72%). My only complaint, like others have mentioned, is there are too many players/characters in the movie and jumps around a bit without much details or explaining. I do wonder if that relationship between Jamie and John was really like that. Sadly, with Jamie's name changed and his whereabouts unknown to the general public, we will never know.

Very well shot, but soul crushingly brutal and depressing. Reminded me of Ketchum's The Girl Next Door iirc. I'd probably be a happier person if I'd never seen those two films.

Going back to thread one and Stephen King discussion, I don't know how it compares to the book, but I've always been a big fan of The Dead Zone. You've got David Cronenberg directing and Christopher Walken giving a really strong performance. I also thought Martin Sheen was really good. For those who haven't seen it, I would definitely recommend it.
