Crimson Peak had a strong cast, beautiful set and cinematography, but was just sort of empty and stale story-wise. But I'll definitely watch it again someday.

I'm a huge fan of Crimson Peak and hope to watch my new, shiny BD this evening! I can see why the story doesn't grab some people or is too familiar, but I found it very effective. It reminds me of the ghost stories of Edith Wharton and Henry James: Gothic yet very literary. It captures the feeling of those stories in much the same way The Innocents does, only with the ghosts made more explicit and contemporary.

I think if they did the same story, but in an ordinary looking mansion, the film wouldn't be that appealing. It's the awesome house that makes the movie worth watching.

That's why I keep rewatching that awful remake of The Haunting (2005). The sets are amazing, but the movie sucked.

Maybe The Mist or Cujo or Misery get close? Thought?

I always wanted to love Salem's Lot, some great moments in there, but something's missing. Watched the Rob Lowe remake just now. Not awful, but also not as good as I think it should have been.
Exempting Stand By Me, The Shawshank Redemption, and The Green Mile due to their non-horror status, as far as I'm concerned, we're left with Carrie (the first version, natch), all by itself. I'm not a fan of Kubrick, and I think that The Shining is a bloated mess. The Mist has its moments, but it's not a great film overall. Misery comes close, as the performances are great, but the plot isn't very memorable. I am loathe to admit that I've never seen Cujo and The Dead Zone--I really need to remedy that soon.

So, yeah. Just De Palma's Carrie, as far as I'm concerned (at least for the moment).

Thanks, guys! We always have a blast when we go to shows. Plus, his best friend tags along. We live in Rhode Island, and have driven as far south as Delaware and as far north as Maine for shows this year. My son and I have been to 89 shows this year, lol. Our weekends are usually pretty stacked.

About to kick off my challenge with The Blair Witch Project. My son wants to see it, and I want to see Blair Witch tomorrow so it works out perfectly.

Exactly my impression. Also sounds beautifully immersive with DTS:X and 7.1.4 speaker set-up.

House of Last Things (2013), on Netflix Streaming, is one quirky persistently strange haunted house movie that's equal parts subtle horror and dry comedy - which works surprisingly well. It was a refreshing change from some of the gorey gloomy terror flicks Inusually frequent and seemed like a really smart movie making scares out of things like yellow balloons or golf balls.

Funny, i am watching that arrow release as well. I have it on the italian track with english subtitles. Seems fine to me. The transfer is pristine too BTW

I can't really watch any subtitled films this month, as lately my sugar has been out of whack, and that makes it hard for me to read words on the TV, so if I watch any foreign films, they have to be dubbed.

On another note, YouTube seems to be a treasure trove of old horror movies. I'm watching one of my favorite movies from the 50s right now on one of the horror movie subscription channels I found, The Giant Gila Monster.

It is beautiful. And that is weird. I checked back and forth throughout and the English seemed to match the lips perfectly. Maybe it was a mix of both and we picked up or looked at different spots (well obviously we looked at different scenes, unless yours were the eyes I caught peeking through my blinds).

EDIT TO ADD: Just to be clear, I know that Italian is the original soundtrack, whether all actors spoke Italian I do not know. Arrow does state that Italian is original on the back of the box. Just made me think of the confusions I've had in the past.

Dang. Totally forgot about Carrie. Yeah, it is up there with Cujo as far as the best horror adaptation though I would have preferred the book ending to the movie ending.

Spoiler:
Carrier destroys the town. It's may sound a little over the top but it is badass in the book.

Having a lot of fun with these flicks from the 80s I haven't seen yet. Might dwell here for awhile longer. Tonight it's:

Splatter University
Just Before Dawn
Intruder
and The Lamp (aka: Outing) <---is there a sub-cata'GORY for possible killer genie?

I'd like to coin a new term "Franco'd"...
Ha! Yeah, I saw your 1.5 star rating when I logged it in to Letterboxd. Franco'd is definitely a good term for it especially for some of these deeper cut Code Red type stuff. I have already started the process of getting rid of it, so we'll see how that goes.

Edit: Oops! Sorry, didn't notice part 2 had started.

A few thoughts and observations on Colin Clive, Karloff and James Whale's Frankenstein:

HENRY Frankenstein has a friend called VICTOR.
FRITZ is the mildly-hunchbacked assistant.
Henry rejects the brain of a hanged criminal because it is useless, as the neck snapped. So, he goes after a completely-spineless brain-in-a-jar... Hmm...
Anybody who says "Crazy am I..? We'll see..." with a crazed look on their face may well indeed be crazy.

Next up was the first Final Destination. This movie has one of the most harrowing Airplane explosions ever and is not to be missed for that alone. The rest of the movie has some interesting kills in a Looney Tunes sort of way (can't remember the term for puzzles and traps like that. Someone here rescue me as it is driving me nuts.)
I agree on the airplane segment. Pretty intense. I finally watched World War Z Saturday night for the first time and felt that airplane scene was pretty intense. Actually the whole movie was a real rollercoaster ride.

Ill take gregory peck, patrick troughton, david warner, lee remick, billy whitelaw hands down over liev schrieber, pete postelwaite, david thewlis, julia stiles, mia farrow Any day. No contest with the original
I opened it as well. It seems the remake was first in the package, and that's what I loaded into the machine. I had never seen the remake and was expecting the original film. Once I saw the credits I knew I had grabbed the wrong one and just watched it. The remake looks very slick with more jump scares thrown in. I like Gambon, but no one does Bugenhagen like Leo McKern!

Now I'm deciding whether to marathon all the Exorcist films, or the first season of Ash vs the Evil Dead.
I was looking for something on the short side and was going to go with the Grotto, but the reviews were not very kind. Ended up going with something else.

The film Constantine always makes my list for the challenge, and it's good to see the series out.

I don't think it was answered, and I don't want you to be driven any more crazy. The term I think you're looking for is a Rube Goldberg machine.
