Crimson Peak had a strong cast, beautiful set and cinematography, but was just sort of empty and stale story-wise. But I'll definitely watch it again someday.

I'm a huge fan of Crimson Peak and hope to watch my new, shiny BD this evening! I can see why the story doesn't grab some people or is too familiar, but I found it very effective. It reminds me of the ghost stories of Edith Wharton and Henry James: Gothic yet very literary. It captures the feeling of those stories in much the same way The Innocents does, only with the ghosts made more explicit and contemporary.

That's why I keep rewatching that awful remake of The Haunting (2005). The sets are amazing, but the movie sucked.

Has their ever been a Stephen King story, outside of Kubrick's The Shining, turned into a great film? Don't get me wrong, I enjoy most of the films based on his work, but they always seem to at least slightly miss that 5/5 level. Plenty of 4s, and few below a 3, but I don't think I'd call any great. Maybe The Mist or Cujo or Misery get close? Thought?
I always wanted to love Salem's Lot, some great moments in there, but something's missing. Watched the Rob Lowe remake just now. Not awful, but also not as good as I think it should have been.

So, yeah. Just De Palma's Carrie, as far as I'm concerned (at least for the moment).

That's awesome. My son (who recently graduated HS) and I are big UFC fans and of course the UFC has great events planned for every weekend in October. Each UFC takes about 6 hours to watch, times 4 and we end up with an entire day's worth of missed horror watching. Right now this last weekend's event is still on the DVR and Fight Pass. Waiting for when I need a time-out.
About to kick off my challenge with The Blair Witch Project. My son wants to see it, and I want to see Blair Witch tomorrow so it works out perfectly.

House of Last Things (2013), on Netflix Streaming, is one quirky persistently strange haunted house movie that's equal parts subtle horror and dry comedy - which works surprisingly well. It was a refreshing change from some of the gorey gloomy terror flicks Inusually frequent and seemed like a really smart movie making scares out of things like yellow balloons or golf balls.

Foreign films can sometimes be annoying and confusing with what language track to choose. I'm watching Arrow's recent release of The Night Evelyn Came Out of the Grave and since it's Italian, and IMDb states language is Italian, that's the track I chose. But dubbing was way off.

I can't really watch any subtitled films this month, as lately my sugar has been out of whack, and that makes it hard for me to read words on the TV, so if I watch any foreign films, they have to be dubbed.
On another note, YouTube seems to be a treasure trove of old horror movies. I'm watching one of my favorite movies from the 50s right now on one of the horror movie subscription channels I found, The Giant Gila Monster.

EDIT TO ADD: Just to be clear, I know that Italian is the original soundtrack, whether all actors spoke Italian I do not know. Arrow does state that Italian is original on the back of the box. Just made me think of the confusions I've had in the past.

Exempting Stand By Me, The Shawshank Redemption, and The Green Mile due to their non-horror status, as far as I'm concerned, we're left with Carrie (the first version, natch), all by itself. I'm not a fan of Kubrick, and I think that The Shining is a bloated mess. The Mist has its moments, but it's not a great film overall. Misery comes close, as the performances are great, but the plot isn't very memorable. I am loathe to admit that I've never seen Cujo and The Dead Zone--I really need to remedy that soon.
So, yeah. Just De Palma's Carrie, as far as I'm concerned (at least for the moment).

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 12th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/
Having a lot of fun with these flicks from the 80s I haven't seen yet. Might dwell here for awhile longer. Tonight it's:
Splatter University
Just Before Dawn
Intruder
and The Lamp (aka: Outing) <---is there a sub-cata'GORY for possible killer genie?

A few thoughts and observations on Colin Clive, Karloff and James Whale's Frankenstein:
HENRY Frankenstein has a friend called VICTOR.
FRITZ is the mildly-hunchbacked assistant.
Henry rejects the brain of a hanged criminal because it is useless, as the neck snapped. So, he goes after a completely-spineless brain-in-a-jar... Hmm...
Anybody who says "Crazy am I..? We'll see..." with a crazed look on their face may well indeed be crazy.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 12th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/
Started my first movie after midnight last night. It was a turkey: The Jekyll & Hyde Portfolio. It was bad good. Just bad. I streamed it off ExploitationTV and luckily didn't spring any big money for the OOP BD from Vinegar Syndrome.
Next up was The Exorcist III today after spending all morning doing a yard sale (needed some extra money for the wife and my costumes this year). I will discuss that in the review thread but dang, weird flick.
Next up was the first Final Destination. This movie has one of the most harrowing Airplane explosions ever and is not to be missed for that alone. The rest of the movie has some interesting kills in a Looney Tunes sort of way (can't remember the term for puzzles and traps like that. Someone here rescue me as it is driving me nuts.)

Yeah... but there's no longer a reason to do separate threads due to length. Chad just does this out of tradition. I'd like to see that tradition die...

I broke open my 4 film box set of the Omen films. I started with the 2006 remake since i had never seen it and wanted to give it every advantage. I then watched the original. The 2006 remake is a shot for shot copy of the original, so only difference is the acting in which to judge the film.
Ill take gregory peck, patrick troughton, david warner, lee remick, billy whitelaw hands down over liev schrieber, pete postelwaite, david thewlis, julia stiles, mia farrow Any day. No contest with the original

For today's theme I started with The Grotto, a fairly recent indy set in Italy. Fairly generic, but not horrible.
Then I checked out the (free on Amazon) first episodes of The Exorcist and Constantine, and unfortunately for my future wallet, enjoyed both.
Now I'm deciding whether to marathon all the Exorcist films, or the first season of Ash vs the Evil Dead.

The film Constantine always makes my list for the challenge, and it's good to see the series out.
