Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 12th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/
Yeah, i'm into it too. I also caught the new start of ASH/EVIL DEAD. Which reminds me, that marks the 2nd time in my marathon where I've seen Carnival of Souls playing on a tv. The first time was when one of the paranormal guys was watching it in Insidious 2. Will it continue? We shall see...

I went to 3 wrestling shows with my son this weekend, so I haven't even gotten started yet. Planning to kick things off tonight, after a post-work nap.

That's awesome. My son (who recently graduated HS) and I are big UFC fans and of course the UFC has great events planned for every weekend in October. Each UFC takes about 6 hours to watch, times 4 and we end up with an entire day's worth of missed horror watching. Right now this last weekend's event is still on the DVR and Fight Pass. Waiting for when I need a time-out.

I know Franco probably has his fervent fans here, but I have the same response to most of his movies. Yet I keep giving more of his movies a chance, fooled by fan praise and/or how psychotronic they sound. Yet for every decent one, I suffer through a pile of turds. I just don't learn ... I'll probably watch some more this month
I just have discovered the guy and there seem to be some very fervent fans and even nicer blu-ray releases of the guy's stuff out there nowadays. But I also read horrible reviews of his movies.
I thought about reading Stephen Thrower's book about him but that would probably end up costing me even more money buying shitty movies. Thrower has a marvelous talent of making crummy movies sound like the best movies ever made.

I watched Red State last night for the Religious Horror theme, and I was surprised at how much I liked it. Admittedly, I usually enjoy Kevin Smith's movies (well, actually, about half of them), but I wasn't expecting much out of this one after its less-than-stellar reviews. I guess that going into it with no expectations helped a lot. I thought that Michael Parks was really, really, Oscar-caliber good, and Melissa Leo and John Goodman were solid. I can see myself watching this again real soon.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 12th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/
This morning I watched a couple of low-budget movies: Dementia 13 and Devil's Partner. The former is an AIP film directed by Francis Ford Coppola and was quite good. A wealthy family has languished under the memory of a daughter who drowned. Now, they are stalked by an axe-wielding maniac.
introduced a friend to a couple of first season episodes of Masters of Horror. He really enjoyed them. Of course, I started him with two of my favorites, Cigarette Burns and Jenifer. He now really wants to see the rest that I have on Blu-ray. Not sure what his reaction will be to some of the others. The episodes start to get a lot spottier after that.
Anyone ever watch season 3? Think it came out under a different name.

For today's theme, I watched a very good first time view. My first Hammer film of the Challenge, The Gorgon. I have to say that I saw the identity of the Gorgon a mile away.

Foreign films can sometimes be annoying and confusing with what language track to choose. I'm watching Arrow's recent release of The Night Evelyn Came Out of the Grave and since it's Italian, and IMDb states language is Italian, that's the track I chose. But dubbing was way off. So I switched to English and the lips are synced nearly perfect. But English subtitles were still on, and the subtitles were drastically different then what was spoken in English! I know re-release and multi-country dubs makes film tracks confusing, but can the BD distributer at least state what the preferred or intended track is?

What if rocker Boni Jovi was a Vampire hunter? Well, I just watched it. Not great but an ok movie.
Now every time I see him i'm going to call him the Vampire Hunter and not the musician.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 12th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/
If you can get past the pretentious "hallucinatory" editing 'tricks' and near constant audio cues then Darling (2015), on Netflix steaming, is a really good 'out of the blue' intense film - not always making sense in a subtle way leaving you to try to fit together some of the pieces as best possible but just far out enough to be eerie and very effective. One of my favorites so far this month (I say on day 3). It fits today's Horror Estate theme.
[Rec] 2 holds up well, really enjoyed it yesterday despite seeing it several times before.

I'm still "new" to Jess Franco films but, while there are many Jess Franco duds, I think those are the sort of films you might watch expecting subpar acting/effects but be lulled into a strange meta-film where the weak production, sleazy, and bizzare (but not always effective) plots gel together - like a song with stupid lyrics but a fun rhythm. Some of his films (like Lorna the Exorcist, Female Vampire, Exorcism) I enjoy for the moodiness but know better than to recommend them. Maybe they're an acquired taste. Often there's not a lot of energy and limited plot/dialogue but a surreal leering camera giving it a dream like quality that can be redeeming if you go in expecting a 'b'-movie. I also recall enjoying A Virgin Among the Living Dead and Vampyros Lesbos much more than I thought.

I think my favorite new viewing of the month so far was last night's religious horror The Witch (2015). It's on Netflix, or maybe it was Amazon Prime, and creeped me out.

I broke open my Universal Monsters Blu Ray set and just watched Dracula. That set was definitely worth the money, and I look forward to checking out the other films in the set.

I forgot to watch Drácula last year which is included with the set. I'll make amends this year.
