I saw that one on last year's challenge. A little on the racist side.

btw, It sure is crazy to see how far decorations have become.

Your link is a bit misformatted I think.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Moon_(1934_film)

And for anyone, like me, who forgot what a Black Moon is, it's main definition is a second full moon in a month.

The film is on YouTube or streaming somewhere else free, I guess?

Maybe I'll check it out if I get tired of Criterions. I do love Fay Wray.....

To add to short films people should check out.

Here's a short horror movie I made last year in the days leading up to Halloween.

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/QtSypOBUg7w" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

And this is a friends earlier comedic short I worked on, and it's cheesy as hell, but that's kind of the point and it is what it is.

If shorts don't count for minimal theme compliance, and I could have sworn it was ruled years ago that they did, then maybe we could come up with a sort of wildcard rule for them. Say you miss a theme day. You watch something of that theme a different day, and submit to the thread a 300 word review of the item, and you get credit for completing the theme. Limit of one or two maybe. Just a thought.

Speaking of 1970s satanist movies, the version I linked earlier is dubbed in English -- now there's one in the original Spanish too. (All other foreign-language films are in their original language, as far as I know.) Also added a bunch of random commentary tracks; later I'll add particulars (or at least generalities) of who is on each commentary track.

I haven't committed myself to the challenge for a couple years; perhaps I can do well this Halloween season. Not working at the moment so I got plenty of free time on my hands

I'm drawing a blank on whether or not we made an official ruling on shorts counting for themes.

Personally I look at it like this - Since syncing the subset and theme lists together they go hand-in-hand, and what applies for one should apply for the other. You're not gonna see shorts on the subsets, so there you go.

Just my opinion.

Despite my constant failure year after year to mention it on the table, the same rule that applies for the subsets also goes for theme nights:

Attending a theatrical showing allows you to obtain a bonus entry. If you missed a day, this means you can still check off the subset list as being complete.
The same goes for attending a live event such as a horror convention, haunted house, play, ghost tour, etc. You have one.

And if anyone's up for it, we could always add one crossover day to that for good measure. It's not too late.

Yes, it's awesome that we synced subsets and theme days (thanks Travis!), but just because they're synced they don't have the same rules everywhere. I'm pretty sure some people try to follow each day's themes, but don't watch all the subset films. It's not both or none.

I just think of each "bonus section" as a thing onto itself, and if someone only has a few minutes one day to try to interact with the forum and complete a task with us, why penalize them? It's not like they'll be dozens of people using shorts every other day, but if a couple people do it a few times a month, why would it bother anyone?

This reminds me of the old "no TV" or "only if IMDB says horror" arguments. Why push people away?

We've already had people comment that they quit doing the subsets and themes if they miss a day. Maybe a more lax rule or more wildcards is in order there.

Can we get a ruling on the entries (just one entry for completing ANY checklist or one entry PER). This will decide my viewing habits sadly.

I remember before you got an entry for any of the other stuff you did. So if you did subset and themes, you got 2 more. I believe I asked this before I bothered trying to complete all 3 for the first time.

How did we get to September 30th already? I've been out with doctor follow-ups, physical therapy, family stuff, and turning 40 yesterday. I haven't even formatted my list yet. For me this October snuck up super quick.

Let me also add that this is awesome (even though I already have a large number of them)

I've been letting "The Strain" and "American Horror Story" episodes pile up on my DVR. Just another 90 minutes or so until dusk here

I will be starting the challenge off with a wild card!

I am covering a haunted house tonight for a local cable show, Spooktacular Chicago! I'll probably watch something for the challenge as well when I get home afterwards.

Happy Haunting!!!

I guess I don't see how we are penalizing people if we don't allow shorts for an *optional* part of the challenge. It's not like we're all that restrictive with people's main lists. Shorts and TV are allowed and encouraged. If they have only a few minutes in a day, they still can watch a short and participate in the main challenge. I don't see why that has to extend to the optional things as well. They are supposed to be difficult to accomplish!

Watching one Looney Tunes short (many would qualify for various themes this year) seems like a bit of a cheat and significantly dilutes the challenge aspect of it.

Also, the theme category is the only one reliant on watching on a particular day, so if people drop the daily subset for missing one day, that doesn't make any sense.

Let's be honest here. Is this more about a battle with your much talked about OCD? You don't want to do all of the optional things, but you're feeling compelled to do so and want it to be just a little bit easier to do?

Interesting - that's also the definition for a Blue Moon. (As in "once in a...")

Wikipedia gives a few definitions for Black Moon:
1. The second occurrence of a new moon in a calendar month.
2. The third new moon in a season that has four of them.
3. The absence of a full moon in a calendar month.
4. The absence of a new moon in a calendar month.

But to celebrate the beginning of the challenge, I'll check out that movie. Thanks!

I can see where you would think that last part, and am honored that people remember anything at all about me, but in this case, it's not really my reasoning. Because I'm much more likely to watch ten theme-compliant full films a day than to watch a short to check a box.

I really am thinking of the "regular people" who participate with us and maybe only have time for a few films a week, not we "power Challengers" who routinely hit 100 a month. Keeping the community-building aspects of the Challenge friendly to busy people, and not too difficult, seems in our best long term interests.

But you make great points, points I've possibly even argued myself in the past! Just trying to be verbose and make sure Chad has multiple viewpoints to consider.

My 2 cents worth is that we should keep the rules as Chad described them. There is one opening there (a theatrical movie or live event) that has been there for a while. That seems sufficient to me.

I completely agree, but we're just clarifying the unclear or missing rules. The themes and checklist for example, have never officially stated what exactly counts. Can a TV show cover the item? And if film only, does any film count, or only academy-length films?

Starting off with Hush, which I've seen, but enjoyed the first time. I don't really have a game plan to start off with...

I find this question interesting for some reason so I went back to the 2009 threads to see what was said when this was introduced, but then I realized two very important things. First, you just went back and reread the threads so the odds are that you would remember what was stated. Second, it is after dusk here in Indy and that means I can start on watching my movies. So, my interest has waned somewhat. I think I have just always assumed that we mean a movie that qualifies as one as described in the rules as a full length movie because the subset picks have always qualified that way and the movies listed as suggestions for the theme nights have always qualified that way (as far as I can remember). My mind must have filled in some blanks so it would be good to be clear.

I am now going to watch Corridors of Blood to start this baby off. I am very excited to finally get going!
