I pretty much stopped looking at the displays several years back when I realized they never contained anything "new."
Point taken about sluggish physical media sales. It seemed like there was also a decrease in the quantity of costumes and decorations, though. I guess that seeing the diminished Halloween stock at retailers made me think that people are growing less enthusiastic about the holiday. On the other hand, maybe the abundance of pop-up Halloween stores could explain that. I hope that Halloween still runs a hot second to Christmas in most folks' hearts.

Halloween has always been my favorite holiday, with Christmas being second. I usually get my decorations at Spirit, or Party City. Sometimes I can pick up something small at the other stores however.

E.T. has one of the few big onscreen Trick or Treating depictions. Oz is more dubious, but certainly a) features a witch and b) is more scary to many people than a dozen famous horror films. (Particularly those from the 30s.)

I was very underwhelmed when I watched it the first time - nowhere near as good as Repo!

Going into it the second time with slightly lowered expectations, I loved it. I tend to think it suffers more from comparisons (and being short) than from actual failings..

I think there are now two different versions with different casts/songs... not sure, though.

Mondo Kane. mightysparks. DaveyJoe.

Is that everyone that's done a compilation/montage video last year? If not, please let me know and I'll add your video to the first post.

The videos from those three have already been added. They're a nice touch, and nothing went wonky.

Seems like a lot of people will watch The Witch so why not just set up a day with some people to watch and discuss?

On that note, anyone going to see Eli Roth's Clown?

R.I.P. Hastings. I'm gonna miss the hell out of that place.

I've heard Halloween day is the last day although I'm sure it varies by location.

Anyone willing to pick me up some horror films? Willing to pay via PayPal and a little extra. There is none in California sadly.

Chad, prize rules clarification please. Does completing the theme, checklist, and subset give someone three extra entries in the pool, or just one? Please tell me it's just one, as I want to relax this year and try to ignore the checklist.

I've been planning the checklist all week at work. Have a huge Excel spreadsheet done with most everything planned out and I should be able to complete it for the first time this year.

I think each of those challenges have their own prize drawing.

I love how much my friends have embraced this challenge over the last few years. At this point, everyone is ready for it. I am expecting at least four or five people to come over tomorrow night.

I woke up this morning thinking it was Friday only to have my hopes dashed once I realized. I can't wait!

I remember doing this a few times except I'd end up watching the same stuff over and over, minus the changing actor/director type stuff. I'd work my way down from movies that gave me the most checks on down. Waxwork always ended up being my first title because it gave me the most checks.

I also remember the last few checks were a pain and I'd always end up watching Mad Love for 1930s and maybe one other check.

I wasn't planning on doing the checklist but I'm looking at it now. Maybe for next year we could update the writers so we have a range of writers that do work in different decades? All but one of them are writers for 2010s and 2000s, with a couple of those going back to 1990s. There's only one guy that wrote movies in the 1950s and 1960s.

I'm just thinking someone that wrote in the early '90s, another for mid, another for late, then one or a couple more to take care of the 2000s and 2010s. Maybe do the same with producers and directors.

Obviously it's too late for this year and I only have myself to blame.

I just finished my last warm up title before the beginning of the Challenge. I watched Crystal Lake Memories, and after a 7 hour documentary, I'm horrored out for the day. And tomorrow I don't plan to watch anything till the Challenge starts.

I realize that everybody has a different way (and reason) to do the challenge checklist but I find that Roku really helps you to have a variety every year. It costs as low as $30 to buy the cheapest version and a few of the free channels have over 1000 movies each. Add in the obscure channels that have obscure movies and you can easily fill in the majority of the checks using one movie per check with new movies every year. It's the best purchase I ever made when it comes to movies.

While I'm not doing the checklist, I have a Roku 3, and agree completely. A lot of my watches come from the various Roku channels. And if someone has a Roku, and a participating provider, the History Channel on Roku, also has the complete series of Haunted History.

Well, there wasn't much left once I got done with them. Off the top of the my head I remember there being a copy of Knock Knock, The Guardian (SF), Jack's Back (SF), Last Shift and that's all I can remember. Unfortunately most were down to the last copy and there's no guarantee they'll still be there. And once things hit the 70% / 90% price point soon the chances are even less.

Anyway, I'll probably make a quick stop there tomorrow or Saturday. Is there anything in particular you're looking for?

Honestly, I haven't thought that far ahead. I know there was an earlier suggestion(s) to change it. I also know there's less participating in the checklist than before, so can't say if that's incentive to change it or keep it the same.

I'll need some additional feedback. One entry for completing any (regardless of how many) of the optional lists -or- a separate entry for each optional list completed?

I'll need some additional feedback. One entry for completing any (regardless of how many) of the optional lists -or- a separate entry for each optional list completed?
My opinion is invalid, as I only plan to work on theme nights, but I say leave it up to the majority.

Doh. Just realized the DVD Talk headline at the top says "11th Annual".

Also just realized I hit 10,000 posts, and it only took me 17 years. Damn you, multi-quoting!

I have always liked the incentive of one entry per optional item (checklist, daily subset, 100, themes) completed, but I'm open to other ideas.

To be honest, if we changed it up too much, I probably won't do all of the optional things like I normally do. I don't do the challenge for the prizes, but I do see the prospect of winning a prize incentive enough to complete all of the optional tasks. Part of me would be happy to not feel like I need to complete all of them, but another part of me would probably miss it.
