Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 12th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/

This morning I watched a couple of low-budget movies: Dementia 13 and Devil's Partner. The former is an AIP film directed by Francis Ford Coppola and was quite good. A wealthy family has languished under the memory of a daughter who drowned. Now, they are stalked by an axe-wielding maniac. The latter is about an old man who sells his soul and comes back as a young man with demonic powers. I enjoyed it, but it's only worth a watch for people who like low budget film or are fans of Edgar Buchanan of Petticoat Junction and Green Acres who plays the town's baffled doctor.

Hi all, hope your first challenge weekend is going well. Though I haven't been going much with the theme nights over the last few years and checklist I am trying, this year, to try to cull ideas from other people's lists of old for at least one week of the challenge, perhaps, if I ever get off this current 1980s kick of this weekend. I can't believe there's still so much horror from that decade I've not seen!

A lot of shakey-cam elsewhere, however.

Both of these are films I thought I watched, but can't remember much about them. I try to rate everything I watch on IMDb, mostly just to have an online database of everything I've ever watched, but I'm lax on doing that and haven't rated those two.

I could search my eleven OHMC list posts, but that's a pain. Maybe a spreadsheet of all my watches here would be a good idea. Or learn to use my dvdprofiler, that has a viewing/rating section I imagine.

The first one features a fanatical cult, so it should definitely count. The second one should be avoided at all costs. It is terrible, and used a pop tart for a jump scare.

I have Lord of Illusions, Deliver us from Evil, and Takes from the Cryptemon Knight set aside for tonight. I think all of those fit the theme.

I'm not impressed by The Exorcist. I mean, it's a good movie. But I've never found it scary. Even back in the 70's. I re-visit it every 10 years or so, hoping to change my mind. Watched the Director's Cut for the first time today, and it still does nothing for me.

The Exorcist III is interesting. No one can chew scenery like George C Scott. And this movie has probably the greatest jump scare of all time. I think the original is a better movie. But I enjoy watching this one much more.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 12th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/

I just hit 10 with The Last Exorcism, so I'm on pace to be ahead of last year, for the start at least. This was my second time seeing it and I really enjoy it. I think the ending is like the cherry on top, no matter what others may gripe about it.

Spoiler just in case:
Spoiler:
The only thing better than an exorcism is a religious cult and ritual sacrifice. Bonus!

I was pleasantly surprised with The Brotherhood of Satan. Very surprised in fact. However it kept reminding me of Bad Day at Black Rock. I guess all the sitting around indoors in an old town.

Also got in The Other Hell for the first time. Not bad, but far from great. Incidentaly I learned that bloody nuns turn me on. I never got into the whole nuns naked in a convent thing; for some reason the blood does the trick. Preferably while in nun-wear. Wife is fine with it, so that's all that matters.

(No-one here knows my true identity do they?? )

William Friedkin has always said it isn't a horror movie (to my knowledge). He considers it a drama. So technically you're right on. Like you said, it's a good movie; just leave it at that.

All of the Alyxstarr subset links are now up.

Also, the optional lists will continue to be one entry for each. That's the general consensus when brought up a few days ago.

Okay, back to the business at hand.

Had a better 2.5 days than I did last year, but looking at what I did on October 3rd from last year (7 films), I don't see myself keeping pace until much later on.

If you're struggling to use up some of your Amazon slow shipping credits, they are having some decent Halloween sales on movies and TV right now.

I was able to get two films that are sort of hard to find on disc, The Guardian and Tales from the Hood for $7.99 each in HD.

I don't normally care that much for programs on SyFy, but when the 31 Days Of Halloween starts, I think the channel is actually pretty good. I just finished Jeepers Creepers 2, and now I'm watching Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning.

It involves some possession-y stuff and Catholicism, so I'd count it.

The first time I saw that one was on my old BW TV when it first came on HBO (waaaaayyyy back in the 70s when I was in college). It surprised me by being somewhat frightening (more thematically than what's presented on screen). Fast forward a couple of decades to when I saw it again - this time in color. It wasn't nearly as frightening and I chalk it up to the color presentation more than knowing what happens. Because of that I no longer watch this one in color but in BW. It just plays better that way... at least for me, but it's still not that scary.

My dad reminded me that TCM was airing Frankenstein tonight, so I turned off SyFy in favor of watching a classic. .

You guys are crazy, The Exorcist is scarier than any film mentioned in this thread so far. It's so scary that I'm not watching it this year, as my girls are out of the house and I can't watch it alone.

City of the Living Dead (1980)

Lucio Fulci's nightmarish horror opens with a priest hanging himself, an act so unholy that it opens a gate to hell, threatening apocalypse for small town Dunwich and the rest of the world. This is one of Fulci's best films, and it features all of his strengths and flaws. If you're familiar with Fulci, you know what to expect. Great atmosphere, music, gore, and photography, and a narrative that doesn't make a lot of sense when you start to connect the dots. Starring Christopher George and Catriona MacColl, this is a classic zombie film that will satisfy most fans.

Fulci is a guilty pleasure of mine. His films don't make a lot of sense, but they are so damn atmospheric, featuring awesome music and unsettling gore, I can't help but love them. An argument can be made that the jumping and distorted narratives of his films are like a living nightmare, and I'd have to agree. City of the Living Dead features a plucky cast of characters trying to stop the apocalypse in a foggy small town that is being terrorized by corpses rising from the dead. Every scene feels like an imminent storm is about to arrive, high winds and dust fly through the air. A plague of worms bursts through the windows and disappears as quickly as it arrives. This is an essential viewing for fans of zombie/apocalypse films.

Zombie Fight Club (2015)

A party in a Chinese high-rise apartment with aspiring rappers and hot girls turns south when a bad batch of drugs turns the fun-lovers into bloodthirsty zombies. This was my first 1st-time-viewing of the Challenge, and I was pretty disappointed. I admire the ambition of the filmmakers, but the budget was lacking and the execution left much to be desired. I bought this movie because of its great title and cover art on its Scream Factory release, but the zombie fight club didn't happen until an hour into the film, and there was only one scene pertaining to that concept. The first two acts of the film are fairly standard zombie stuff that we've all seen before, but done better in other films.

This movie wanted to be Dawn of the Dead meets the Raid in its first half, with a swat team descending on a high rise apartment that's being overwhelmed by zombies. Unfortunately the action is underwhelming and is highly revolved around poor special effects. Every single instance of violence feature CGI blood splatter, so it's hard to really be invested in the action or horror. There is absolutely no character development in the first act, so the ultimate carnage has little impact. It's a shame because there are some really cool shots in this movie, and it is pretty funny, and the final act is compelling, but by the time you get to it, you just don't care anymore.

The Living Dead at Manchester Morgue (1978)

This was a refreshing turn after Zombie Fight Club. A classic zombie horror with old school photography and a slower pace. A chance encounter of a vehicular accident leads to a zombie nightmare in the British countryside. There is a lot of tension between the two leads who just can't stand each other. The local cops are appropriately incompetent as they chase after them, ignorant to the fact that the ever growing body count is caused by zombies created by the pesticides from local farmers.

This was a fun film, and I have to admit to being smitten with the lead actress Cristina Galbo: let's take a moment:

Anyway, this was apparently an Italian production but the dubbing was surprisingly convincing, to the point that I had to look it up and double check. The pacing is nice, and the gore is convincing, there are some suspenseful moments and the main zombie is appropriately scary. I'd really like to revisit this one in the future.

I wish. I only get the option for free "Pantry" shipping. I haven't seen the digital media option in a while.

Forgive me if you were in on this discussion, but in another thread it was mentioned that some people have luck getting the digital credit back if they accept the pantry credit when it's offered. And don't sell that pantry credit short. Combine it with the stuff that is free shipping anyway, and get snacks for free or nearly free.

Ok, has anybody seen The Mutilator (aka Fall Break) from 1984. It has one of the sickest kills I've seen and I've seen many a horror flick.

But...

Spoiler:
The fish hook through the vagina pulled up through the stomach and then decapitation

is one of the more gruesome. Not expecting that in this film...How'd that get through the crazy ratings people who cut something similar from A Friday flick...

Nice! Thanks for the info. And no, wasn't in that discussion, so I appreciate the insight.

Yep. Most years when I watch it for the Challenge I make sure to get it in while the sun is up.
