The Seventh Annual May Make-Your-Own Challenge *Discussion Thread* May 1-31, 2016

The Seventh Annual May Make-Your-Own Challenge
May 1-31, 2016

The list thread.

May is just over a week and a half away, so it's time, once again, to take a look at your dusty, unopened box sets, your unwatched stacks of Blu-rays, DVDs, HD-DVDs, LDs, VHS or Beta tapes, your DVR, your Netflix queue, etc., etc., and decide what you think you should spend 31 days watching. Now's your chance to finally watch all the stuff that didn't fit, or that you just didn't get around to, during the other Challenges.

Since you choose your own Challenge theme, you make the rules.

There are however a few guidelines which everyone should follow.

Challenge Guidelines:

The Challenge runs from May 1 through May 31.

Sure, you can do your May MYOC in September if you want, but the list thread will only be stickied during May, so if you want anyone else to see what you're up to, please try to do it near those dates.

Please state your challenge theme and your challenge goal and rules (if any) at the top of your list(s) in the list thread so others can tell what you're doing.

Please don't duplicate an existing "Official" DVD Talk Challenge.

This guideline is mainly here so we don't subtract from participation in any of the other Challenges, and to encourage participants to focus on genres not already covered by a Challenge, but since everyone's "need to watch" list is different, and you're able to watch stuff that qualifies for one or more of the other Challenges during every other Challenge, you're free to narrow the focus of one of the broader "Official" Challenges.

For example; Say you only collect horror, then you could make your Challenge to watch just horror films, or just horror TV shows, or just zombie films, etc. Or if you have lots of unwatched Sci-Fi, then your MYOC could be just watch Sci-Fi movies, or watch Star Trek shows, or watch TOS, etc.

Here's Trevor's handy-dandy list of Challenges from his "Official" DVDTalk Challenges Compendium thread:

DVDTalk Challenge Schedule

<table border="4"> <tr><td>
Month
</td><td>Month-long Challenge</td><td>
Partial Month Challenge
</td></tr><tr bgcolor=#CCCCCC><td>January</td><td>TV</td><td>Holiday ends on the 1st; varying Academy Award</td></tr><tr bgcolor=#FFCC66><td>February</td><td>none</td><td>varying Academy Award</td></tr><tr bgcolor=#CCCCCC><td>March</td><td>Action/Adventure/Crime</td><td>varying Academy Award</td></tr><tr bgcolor=#FFCC66><td>April</td><td>Drive-In/Exploitation/B-Movie</td><td>none</td></tr> <tr bgcolor=#CCCCCC><td>May</td><td>Make-Your-Own</td><td>none</td></tr> <tr bgcolor=#FFCC66><td>June</td><td>Historical Appreciation</td><td>none</td></tr><tr bgcolor=#CCCCCC><td>July</td><td>Sci-Fi/Fantasy</td><td>none</td></tr><tr bgcolor=#FFCC66><td>August</td><td>Animation</td><td>none</td></tr><tr bgcolor=#CCCCCC><td>September</td><td>Criterion</td><td>none</td></tr><tr bgcolor=#FFCC66><td>October</td><td>Horror</td><td>none</td></tr><tr bgcolor=#CCCCCC><td>November</td><td>Comedy</td><td>Holiday starts week of Thanksgiving</td></tr><tr bgcolor=#FFCC66><td>December</td><td>Holiday</td><td>none</td></tr></table>

Since we already have Monthly "Unwatched Media Pile" Threads, please do not use that as a theme.

During past MYOCs, people weren't happy with this being used as a theme, and I tend to agree that it is a little lazy. So how about giving a little thought to the theme and coming up with something a little more creative, please?

I have several older films I haven't watched in a while that I'd like to watch again, and I have a bunch of 3D movies that I've only seen in 2D before, so this time I'm finally doing a comic book movie (& maybe TV) challenge.

I feel like watching some popcorn flicks. And there's a lot of recent Hollywood movies I haven't seen.

So I was thinking about doing an MTV Movie Awards challenge. Any movie that has won/nominated for a "Golden Popcorn" award. And any movie from someone that won a lifetime achievement award.

I've been bouncing back and forth between different ideas, but I think I'm going to do a Documentary/TV on Dish, Fire TV, and Roku Challenge. I separated Documentary, as I'm allowing those on DVD, to be able to use some of my Netflix queue.

No idea this time around. Maybe I should revisit a tv series...

I'm glad this one is happening again.

As usual I have too many ideas. I am considering the following:
  • Japanese film and TV (I've done this one and a half times before but the pile is large and keeps growing)
  • British TV and film (Never done this and the pile isn't that bad but keeps growing)
  • Shaw Brothers and other Hong Kong films (Never done before and the pile is large but growing much slower than the other two).
I'm always concerned about having enough variety to keep me going. Most of my Hong Kong films are martial arts movies and most of my British stuff is SF or mystery. I have a very wide range of Japanese material which is why I've been leaning in that direction. I know I could combine two or all of these but then I probably wouldn't feel like I made much progress in any of them. Ah decisions, decisions. Actually I enjoy this part of this challenge quite a bit!

I've been trying to come up with ideas for weeks and they were all kind of blah.

Spark of inspiration upon seeing the thread up. I'll be going to do a monster challenge. Should give me a decent mix of horror, sci-fi and fantasy while allowing me to catch up on Supernatural and maybe do a mini Buffy rewatch.

I'm still doing my Star Trek re-watch. By the time this challenge begins I should be completely finished with TNG. I should also be finished with season 3 of DS9 which means it will be DS9 and Voyager for this Challenge.

I've no idea what I'll do this year. I'd considered a serial challenge but have been catching up on them with the Drive-In challenge so will give that one a pass. I need to look over the unopened piles and see if something gels...

I'm toggling between 'Sports' themed or 'Based on books'

My MYOC this year is going to be "The Full Monty"... Films and TV done by Python members in and outside the Python canon, concentrating on the "outside" stuff mostly.

Last year I kept going on my "One Degree of Gyllenhaal" until October 1st! I had a great time doing it and pretty much watched everything available with a Gyllenhaal involved. I hit 198 titles. There are a couple more available on Roku now. I really should push it to 200...

I saw you had a long list in last year's thread when I looked through it again the other day. Did you keep it updated through October?

I've been thinking. I have a lot of action/adventure DVD's I can watch. So I want to change my challenge to narrow the focus of the Action/Adventure/Crime Challenge to make an Action/Adventure/Documentary/Sports Challenge. This gives me a lot to watch next month, and possibly start early without listing.

Yes. The change log must be astronomical! ;) I wanted to keep it going until Jake's movie Everest came out, so all summer I was sourcing more material.

Ok think I've got it Academy Award nominated films (best picture, best actor/actress/ supporting actor/actress) combined with watch *movies only* that you've never seen on Netflix

Not necessarily. Essentially you want to do something that's *not* already covered by a challenge. That can be something totally different *or* narrowing another challenge. Here are some from the past that might give you a idea:

Movie serials
icheckmovies.com List Challenge
Finally Getting Around to a Bunch of Unwatched Items in My Collection
Form Over Content Challenge
Japanese TV Challenge: live-action/anime
VINCENTENNIAL Challenge (Celebrating the life and works of Vincent Leonard Price, Jr.)
The 50s/60s TV Challenge
The Life of P.I. (Private Investigators in movies/TV)
American Movies of the 30's, 40's, and 50's Challenge
World Cinema Challenge
Star Trek Challenge (everything Star Trek or related)
KUNG FU
The Name Challenge (All television shows and films watched will contain an individual's name (first and/or last) in the title.)
The Films of Woody Allen
Alfred Hitchcock Challenge
Films and TV programs originally seen in Britain
Spy movies and TV programs
National Film Registry Challenge (watch any film that has been inducted in the National Film Registry, since its inception in 1989)
Sports/Documentary/Animal Shows Challenge
You've Never Seen ..... Challenge (Stuff you've never seen before)
Amazon Watch List (Watch stuff on your Amazon watch list)
Documentaries

And lots more. Look at past year's challenge lists for more examples and ideas.

The main thing is select something doable and have fun. :)

I've set my first 2 Netflix DVD's for the challenge in my queue. Jurassic World, since I plan to watch the 4 movies, and National Geographic: Tigers of the Snow.

I changed my mind. Now I'm thinking of doing an 80's challenge. I've got a pretty good collection of films from the 80's. Lots of them I haven't seen in 20+ years. So it'll be good to revisit them.

That's too funny. Someone actually did do their MYOC in September.

Welcome aboard. If by combining genres, you're saying something like watch Academy Award winning sports movies, or Academy Award winning Disney films, then yes, that's fine.

The important thing is to pick something you want to spend a month watching, and have a good time watching it.

Reading other peoples' MYOC ideas always makes me want to do a "Watch One Film for Each Participant's Challenge Challenge." You people keep reminding me of unwatched stuff I want to watch.

That's a creative approach.

As for me, I'm still undecided. Leaning towards a focus on some TV shows that I've never seen, despite owning the complete series.

Oh that's a really good idea!

I think I'll probably end up doing Baseball and Blockbusters again, I like the combo of being able to "count" my baseball games, and May seems like a good month to work on this list https://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/a...de+box+office/, for older and current movies.
