I buy a lot of dvds which are known to possess a lot of basketcase drm schemes (in addition to dvd's generic css encryption), which were designed to crash then-current ripping/burning programs (which will remain unnamed) over the past decade or so. (I read a lot of the archives of message boards which discusses this topic).

These days, such basketcase dvds are now $5 (or less) dump bin fodder. For example, such as many Paramount titles released from late-2009 to mid-2014, Disney/Buena Vista titles released over 2006-2010, and many Lionsgate/Summit titles since 2007. (Many of these were also dvd copies in bluray/dvd/digital combo packs).

I spend too much time reading the contents of the *.ifo files of these basketcase discs, largely to figure out how the additional drm schemes function.

Hmm, already a few serious contenders here- I respect that. Here's some of mine:

Waterworld DTS edition- not just because DTS titles were few and far between then, and my Pioneer DVL-909 player needed a modification just to be able to output the DTS signal, but also because I enabled region-selecting on that player and heard that this disc had Japanese subtitles available only when set to region 2!

Aquaria- Static views of fishtanks, bought because it was one of the very first DVD-18 discs (dual-layer on both sides) and I wanted to see what one looked like.

Dead Man Walking- bought this only because it was still sealed in the old-style PolyGram case. Don't even like the movie, but decided I needed to have most of the early DVD releases.

The Legend of Bagger Vance- was on clearance for $1.88 or something like that at Target- I played this movie theatrically and thought it was a bore, I'll likely NEVER watch it. I was just amazed at it being on sale for so cheap. No, I don't buy crap just because of the price anymore.

Despite upgrading them to Blu-ray Disc, I keep my original Casino Royale 2-disc DVD because I bought the Walmart exclusive edition that included two decks of cards and a Casino Royale poker chip, and The Adventures of Indiana Jones DVD box set partly for its Bonus Materials disc but mostly because I just love its package design. But at least those were additions that I would stand by having made in the first place, so I dunno if that's the same vain as the original question.

It did occur to me just now, though, while scanning my shelves that I have a promotional DVD advertising the Wii Fit stashed in with my handful of remaining Wii games. I think I picked up that DVD back when my wife and I first got our Wii, because I was curious. To this day, I've never watched that DVD, nor do I have a Wii Fit. So if Nintendo's objective was to get me to acquire and hold on to a promotional DVD, then champagne all around, 'cause mission: accomplished! If the purpose was to get me to watch the DVD and then buy a Wii Fit, though, I'm afraid the bubbly remains on ice.

I cut my teeth on deciphering the basketcase drm schemes on the notorious 2007 fullscreen Casino Royale dvd, and Pirates of the Caribbean 3 (At World's End). I found both titles in a local thrift shop for $1.

There was enough unofficial documentation online describing the interpreter programming language used in the *.ifo files, that I can follow *.ifo files relatively easily nowadays. It's basically a subset of most other programming languages.

The more recent basketcase drm schemes used on Lionsgate and Paramount's dvd discs, are largely variations/extensions of the tricks used on Casino Royale and PotC3.

I blind bought Wild Things 2 because I was infatuated with Susan Ward and she looked really hot on the cover. Ended up being a pretty lame 1-time only watch movie. The sex scenes in the movie weren't even that good. I think I ended up selling it to FYE for like $5.

Taught me a valuable lesson about blind buying B titles, especially straight to video.

I bought some DVDs from a dealer in Hong Kong, and needed to add a $3 purchase to get a break in shipping. I got a Japanese porn DVD that turned out not to be all-region. Several years later I was able to watch it, and it was bad. So bad. They shot it on the roof of their apartment building.

Wow- never seen a porn DVD that was region coded. Can you even set region codes with consumer-level DVD authoring software? Of course many people bought porn DVDs in the first year or so of the format because they were the only ones that used the multi-angle function, even though Vivid's titles actually just had 4 different edits of scenes that you could switch between, they weren't really shot with 4 cameras simultaneously.

Another one I thought of- the "Special Edition" of "Tomorrow Never Dies", which was the second-ever double dip (Animal House was the first.) I got it mainly because one of the subtitle tracks used the 007 "gun logo" as an indicator that you could switch to the 2nd angle to see storyboards of the current scene- I thought subtitles were just text, but this showed that they were capable of doing graphics as well. I wanted to see what it looked like, so I bought the disc. (Don't know why they didn't use subtitle graphics for the storyboards themselves, as Anchor Bay's first special edition of Army of Darkness did.)

Today I picked up some superfluous dvd titles, for similar reasons mentioned in this thread.

I was at a thrift shop today, and came across the widescreen 2007 version of the Casino Royale dvd, and season 6 of Scrubs. I ended up purchasing both titles for less than $5 in total.

The 2007 fullscreen version of the Casino Royale dvd was the one which was notorious for having tons of basketcase drm, and other oddities such as not being able to play on various Sony manufactured dvd players. (Ironically, the 2007 Casino Royale dvd was released by Sony). Today I was curious to see whether the widescreen 2007 version of Casino Royale had tons of baseketcase drm. From an initial scan of the disc, the widescreen version didn't have any obvious basketcase drm. (More research to be done).


For the case of Scrubs season 6, it was released during 2007. I was curious to know whether it had any major basketcase drm schemes that Disney/Buena Vista used during 2006 and 2008-2010. It turned out, Scrubs season 6 didn't have any obvious major basketcase drm schemes, from an initial scan and inspection of the *.ifo files.

From my studies of basketcase drm, it turns out Disney didn't use any major basketcase drm schemes in most of their 2007 new releases. The earliest Disney dvd discs which I first came across basketcase drm schemes, were various 2006 releases (such as Grey's Anatomy season 2, Desperate Housewives season 2, etc ...) and many releases over 2008 to 2010. After 2010, Disney dropped a lot of the really egregious baseketcase drm schemes, such as: deliberate bad sectors, "interleaved vts" file structure deformities, etc ...

Also ironically, the copy of Scrubs season 6 I purchased today, turned out to have an extra copy of the third disc. One copy looked fine other than some minor scratches and fingerprints, while the other copy looked like it was heavily scratched (ie. as if it was slid across the floor several times).

I check both copies of disc 3 on the computer, and it turned out both copies could be fully read without any read problems, in spite of one copy being badly scratched. To make sure I wasn't fooling myself, I calculated hashes (ie. md5., sha1, etc ...) of the undecrypted isos extracted from both discs, and they also checked out.

Not really. Since I frequent so many pawn/thrift shops I buy a lot if DVDs for cover art/different edition/snapper case since they are so cheap. Some of those early snappers have some great artwork, esp. the sci-fi ones. I don't understand why snappers are so hated. There are collectors for slip covers and steel books, and essentially a snap case is a cross between the two.

I never liked the snapper case. I was always afraid they were more prone to damage and wear being made of cardboard stock. They were also impossible to easily replace if the hub went bad or arrived broken.

Actually they were not hard at all to fix if the hub went bad. The cardboard just snaps in the solid plastic piece and you could (not sure if you still can) buy those fairly cheap. Plus remember back in the day when sites sold those 'hub stickers' that you could stick on anything? :lol: Seems like there was even one place that included them in orders (similar to 800.com including the popcorn).

I didn't care for them either, though.

I'd certainly rather have a snapper case than a hole-filled Eco-Case!

The "basketcase" copy-protection schemes haven't intrigued me as much as they apparently have morriscroy, but I've noticed most of them have the bad sectors right before the movie. If it's a disc with several TV episodes, they'll put those bad sectors before every episode which of course means more of those to get through. Since there's certain things we're not supposed to talk about here, I'll just say that I've pretty much got that problem licked for my purposes.

The plastic breaking was never my concern with the snapper cases, it was the cardboard wearing out. Since I buy a lot of used, the cardboard part is particularly susceptible to wear and tear. For a regular keep case, as long as the cover art insert is in good condition, I can put it in another keep case.

And I have bought DVDs for the cases before, I've bought multiple copies of Glee because of the multi-disc cases. I end up donating the discs to thrift stores after I've used the case for another set of movies.
