All-time classic | **** Grrr, movie GOOD! Fire BAD! | *** Scary! | ** Flawed, but still worth a watch | * Meh. | Total shitshow
LIST COMPLETE
Sept.30
1. Carnival of Souls (1962)-Hulu-***Carnival of Souls has always felt like an extended Twilight Zone episode to me, but the climactic chase is still effective.
2. The Brood (1982)-DVD-**** This does for kids in snowsuits what "Blink" did for statues.
3. Cooties (2015)-Viooz-**** Tainted chicken nuggets turn elementary school students into little monsters who start eating the teachers. I was surprised by the amount of gore in this film, given that the cast are mostly children. The movie has an all-star cast of B-list TV comedy actors and has a sly, self-aware vibe.
4. Bloodsucking Bastards (2015)-Viooz-**** Workplace horror movies have been done before, but this is an entertaining light comedy about a new sales manager who has a novel method for increasing employee productivity.
Oct. 1
5. Dark Floors (2008)-TV-* This was produced and written by a Finnish heavy metal band, and it shows. The story deals with a father and his autistic daughter who find themselves trapped in with a handful of other people in a deserted hospital. Apparitions appear out of the floor at odd times, and there are time shifts when past and future events overtake each other, but it doesn't add up to much.
6. Bloodwor℞ (2012)-TV-*** I enjoyed this much more than the previous flick. Two college buddies sign up as guinea pigs for a pharmaceutical company and things go horribly wrong. The acting was good, and the writers put some thought into the consequences of the drug in question.
7. Willow Creek (2013)-TV-*** A found footage flick in which a generic hipster couple go searching for Bigfoot. Hilarity ensues. Written and directed by Bobcat Goldthwait, the movie has a very Blair Witch feel as the couple interview locals to learn more about Bigfoot lore and then end up blundering about the woods at night.
8. The Thaw (2011)-TV-*Global warming has thawed the Arctic and uncovered a frozen mammoth that died infested by prehistoric parasites that find humans to be their new taste treat. Everybody in this movie is stupid and deserves to die.
Oct. 2
9. Vacancy (2007)-TV-* Luke Wilson is easy on the eyes, but he can't act worth a damn.
10. Man-Made Monster (2007)-YouTube *: Lionel Atwill turns Lon Chaney, Jr. into an electrified killer. Very satisfying old-school B-movie.
Oct. 3
11. The Curse of Frankenstein (1957)-DVD- Peter Cushing in a rare villain role, and Christopher Lee as the Creature. Great Saturday morning fare!
12. Taste the Blood of Dracula (1969)-DVD-: **** Now that is an evocative film title. Dracula sets young people against their parents in Hammer's attempt to make Victorian horrors relevant in the swinging 60s.
13. The Wicker Man (1973)-DVD- One of the greatest horror films ever, and easily Christopher Lee's best film performance.
14. Svengoolie: The Night Monster (1942)-TV: *** A top-notch Universal horror film about a series of murders committed in an old dark house involving scientists, a swamis and a man with no legs.
Oct.4
15. Cast a Deadly Spell (1991)-YouTube ****: I absolutely love this movie, a note-perfect blend of 1940s noir and Lovecraftian Elder Gods mythology.
16. Ghostwatch (1992)-YouTube ****: Extremely creepy movie purporting to be a live seance. Excellent in every respect, and it has Lister from Red Dwarf.
17. Rosemary's Baby (1968)-Blu-Ray- A paranoia classic, very similar in parts to Val Lewton's The Seventh Victim. I'm not a huge Mia Farrow fan, but she is great as timid Rosemary Woodhouse who is a puppet of Satanic forces.
18. Fear the Walking Dead, "The Good Man"/ The Strain, "Night Train"(2015)-TV: *** The zombie apocalypse is ON!/ Bye bye Nora.
Oct.5
19. The Hunger (1983)-DVD- One of David Bowie's better roles, and the sex scene with Susan Sarandon and Catherine Deneuve is scorching.
20. Hellbent (2004)-VeeHD*** A masked killer stalks and beheads gay men on Halloween night in West Hollywood. The acting and production values are surprisingly good for a low-budget horror flick, although the plot is very by-the-numbers.
Oct.6
21. The Deaths of Ian Stone (2007)-TV-:*** One of the first set of After Dark horror films, This is an enjoyable horror flick with some cool twists.
22. The Frighteners (1996)-DVD- Peter Jackson shows his film-making chops years before LOTR. The Frighteners just hits it perfectly on all cylinders: it's scary, funny, and has Jeffery Combs as a creepy FBI agent.
23. Devil's Pass (2013)-Netflix-*** Another Blair Witch ripoff. A group of college students travel to Russia to investigate the 1959 Dyatlov Pass incident, and hilarity ensues with a bizarre end that is actually foreshadowed when you go back and look at the clues.
Oct.7
24. Sleepstalker: The Sandman's Last Rites (1995)-TV-:**** The plot is familiar--an executed murderer's spirit sets out to wreak vengeance--but this is really well done for a low-budget horror flick.
25. Diary of a Madman (1963)-YouTube*** Getting in my first Vincent Price film of the the month, in which he plays a 19th-century French magistrate who becomes possessed by an evil spirit that forces him to commit murder.
26. Tremors 5: Bloodlines (2015)-Netflix-:**** Burt Gummer is hunting graboids again, this time in South Africa.
27. The Sentinel (1977)-Blu-Ray-:*** A messy script + a first-rate cast.
Oct.8
28. Village of the Damned (1960)-DVD- This movie scared the bejeebers out of me as a kid. There is just something so creepy about glowing eyes. With commentary
Oct.9
29. Zombeavers (2014)-Netflix-:**** With a title like Zombeavers, I was expecting awful, stupid and cheesy, but I was pleasantly surprised. This movie is hysterical!
30. The Return of the Living Dead Part II (1988)-TV-:*** Basically a rehash of the first movie, but with less nudity, this movie seems more aimed at kids.
31. Day of the Dead (1985)-Blu-Ray-:Frankie: Probably my favorite of Romero's zombie films. With commentary
32. Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead (2014)-Netflix-:*** Australian horror cinema has been really strong over the past decade.
33. Fido (2007)-TV- If the zombie apocalypse had happened in the Eisenhower era
Oct.10
34. Night of the Living Dead (1968)-TV- The movie that created the modern zombie.
35. Los Inocentes (2013)-Netflix-:*** An entertaining tribute to the 80s slasher film.
Oct.11
36. Final Destination 3 (2006)-TV-: *** An adequate sequel, this time with a roller coaster as the catalyst.
37. Scream of the Wolf (1974)-YouTube** Peter Graves hunts Clint Walker who he thinks is a werewolf.
38. Deadly Blessings (1981)-YouTube* This has a very made-for-TV vibe, and is overall a terrible movie. Incubus!
39. Deadly Friend (1986)-DVD-: *** Not a great movie, but it is a hoot. That is not how you throw a basketball!
Oct.12
40. Tremors (1990)-DVD- This is how you do a horror comedy.
41. Dr. Terror's House of Horrors (1965)-Netflix-:*** Even a major star like Donald Sutherland had t start somewhere. This is an OK anthology horror film, the scariest segment is the one with Christopher Lee as the bitchy art critic.
42. Two on a Guillotine (1965)-TV-** Extremely hokey, even by 1960s standards.
43. Frankenhooker (1990)-Hulu-*** Finally got around to seeing this. Is a movie camp if it's intentionally bad?
Oct.13
44. Session 9 (2001)-TV-: *** Extremely eerie.
45. As Above, So Below (2014)-TV-:*** The visions of past sins reminds me of the climax of Event Horizon.
46. The Babadook (2014)-Netflix- You don't often find horror movies with this kind of emotional heft.
Oct.14
47. Phantoms (1998)-TV-: *** Flawed but watchable. Affleck is too young to play a sheriff and you have to wonder why Peter O'Toole is in this.
48. Nightbreed (1990)-Blu-Ray-: ***** The Cabal Cut from Shout Factory works so much better than the theatrical cut.
Oct.15
49. Torture Garden (1967)-DVD-: *** Another Amicus anthology, this time based on Robert Bloch short stories.
50. It! (1966)-YouTube ***: Roddy McDowell plays a psycho museum worker who uses a golem to kill his enemies.
51. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1920)-YouTube ***: John Barrymore is excellent here playing the dual role of good and evil.
52. The Atticus Institute (2015)-TV-:*** Creepy faux-documentary about the U.S. government investigating a possessed woman in an attempt to weaponize the forces of evil. Things do not go well.
Oct.16
53. It Follows (2015)-Viooz-:**** It Follows lives up to the hype. the soundtrack and direction give it an 80s feel, and the plot really hammers on the idea of sex leading to death.
54. His Name Was Jason: 30 Years of Friday the 13th. (2010)-TV-: *** Interesting doc on the series.
55. Shocker (1989)-TV-: ** Shocker starts out scary, but turns ridiculous when they jump into TV land.
56. A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (2014)-Netflix-:**** How did a movie this decadent and fun get past the Iranian censors? Turns out it's an American film, made in California!
Oct.17
57. The Lair of the White Worm (1988)-TV-: *** Bram Stoker + Ken Russell=campy fun, plus the current Doctor as a young man. The star is Amanda Donohoe as the slinky priestess of the white worm.
58. Starry Eyes (2014)-Netflix- What a great, creepy movie! I absolutely loved this.
59. Svengoolie: The Cat and the Canary (1939)-TV-:*** Creaky Bob Hope vehicle about a haunted house, a will, and an escaped murderer.
Oct.18
60. The Rocky Horror Show (2015)-TV-:**** A production of the original stage show to celebrate its 40th anniversary.
61. The Omen (1976)-Blu-Ray- Gregory Peck lends gravitas to a classic horror film.
62. The Church (1989)-DailyMotion ***: This movie is bonkers. Also, despite listing Goblin as the soundtrack composers, they lifted Phillip Glass's score from Koyaanisqatsi for the massacre scene at the beginning of the film.
63. The Walking Dead, "First Time Again"/"JSS"(2015)-TV: *** Alexandria is having a survival pop quiz.
Oct.19
64. Detention of the Dead (2012)-TV-:**** Zombie movies are pretty much played out, but this mashup of The Breakfast Club with the zombie apocalypse is a lot more fun than it has any right to be, with the right combination of laughs and gore.
65. Circle (2015)-Netflix-:**** Another "let's throw random strangers into a life or death horror scenario and see what happens" movie; this time it's 50 people being killed off by an alien device at 2-minute intervals, then they discover they can vote for who dies next. Not scary, but an interesting experiment in group psychology.
66. Night of the Creeps (1986)-DVD-:**** Alien slugs turn college frat guys into zombies. A very 80s movie and a heckuva lot of fun.
Oct.20
67. What We Do in the Shadows (2014)-Blu-Ray-:Frankie: A note-perfect riff on traditional vampire lore that blends comedy and horror in one of the best movies I've seen in a long time.
68. Daybreakers (2009)-Blu-Ray-:**** The Spierig brothers have been turning out terrific horror/sci-fi movies that slip quietly under the radar. Daybreakers is set ten years after a plague turned the majority of humans into vampires, and the few humans left are farmed as a blood source. The blood is running out, and unless vampire researcher Ethan Hawke can solve the problem, the vampires will devolve into bat-monsters and die. Daybreakers is an excellent piece of horror/sci-fi worldbuilding.
69. Island of Lost Souls (1933)-Blu-Ray- Gotta get a Bela movie in today.
70. Nocturna (2015)-Viooz ****: An interesting flick about Louisiana cops getting involved in a vampire conflict.
71. The Vampires Night Orgy (1974)-DVD-:* Wow, this is bad. A poorly dubbed Euro horror drive-in flick about tourists stranded in a town populated by the undead.
Oct.21
72. In the Mouth of Madness (1994)-DVD-:**** John Carpenter's tribute to H.P. Lovecraft.
73. Evil Dead 2: Dead Before Dawn (1987)-Blu-Ray- Sam Raimi somehow managed to blend the Three Stooges with gutchurning gore to make a terrific sequel to a horror classic.
74. Unearthed (2006)-TV-:* An alcoholic sheriff tries to fight an ancient alien monster. Typical AfterDark film, poorly made and not interesting. What a waste of Luke Goss.
Oct.22
75. The Final Girls (2015)-Viooz-:**** I really enjoyed the meta-references in the film, like walking over captions as physical objects. Thoroughly enjoyable film
76. Terror in the Aisles (1984)-Blu-Ray-:** A lackluster clip show with a fuzzy concept of "terror."
77. Rec 4: Apocalypse (2014)-Netflix-:*** It's not a bad movie, but we've already seen this: a number of people in a small space one by one become infected by a demonic virus, this time on a ship.
Oct. 23
78. The Houses That October Built (2014)-Netflix-* I was expecting a lot more out of this one, about a group of friends who drive an RV around Texas and Louisiana in search of the ultimate Halloween haunted house. The trailer made it look really scary, but the movie seemed confused whether its villains are supernatural or human. The acting is well done, but I am tired of found footage movies.
79. House of Wax (1953)-DVD-:**** A Vincent Price classic, with a pre-Addams Family Carolyn Jones as Price's second victim, and Charles Bronson before he changed his name.
80. THEM! (1954)-DVD-:**** For my money, the best of the giant atomic critter films of the 50s.
Oct.24
81. Little Shop of Horrors (1986)-Blu-Ray-:**** Ellen Greene owns the role of Audrey
82. Dawn of the Dead (1978)-DVD- The mack daddy of zombie movies. Accept no substitutes.
83. The Deathmaster (1971)-DVD-:*** Robert Quarry as a vampire guru clearly patterned after Charles Manson redeems this otherwise forgettable drive-in flick.
84. Return of the Fly (1959)-Blu-Ray-:*** An uninspired sequel with a hunky actor as the unfortunate heir.
85. The Alligator People (1959)-DVD-:** Terrific cast but so-so movie. If you're going to set a film in the Louisiana bayou country, they ought to try to make it look less like a backlot.
Oct.25
86. Pulse (2006)-TV-:**** One of the few American remakes of a Japanese film that works better than the original. I've seen this several times, and it never fails to disturb me every time.
87. Earth vs. the Spider (1958)-YouTube *** Teenagers at the sock hop fight a giant spider. Another Bert I. Gordon giant creature feature.
88. From Hell It Came (1957)-YouTube The soul of a wronged man inhabits a killer tree stump and kills his enemies. Just a terrible movie.
89. Dylan Dog: Dead of Night (2010)-Putlocker ***: Brandon Routh is amiable eyecandy as a New Orleans occult detective fighting a smorgasbord of supernatural baddies in New Orleans. Routh isn't much of an actor, but he's enjoyable here and the movie is a lot of fun.
90. The Simpsons, "Treehouse of Horror /XXV/ Halloween of Horror, Treehouse of Horror XXVI; Family Guy, "Peternormal Activity
91. The Walking Dead, "Thank You"/ It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown
Oct. 26
92. Die Zärtlichkeit der Wölfe (1973)-DVD-**** The English title is The Tenderness of the Wolves. An excellent, if ghastly, film about the real-life serial killer Fritz Haarmann who killed and ate a number of attractive young men in Hanover, Germany during the early 1920s.
93. Don't Look Now (1973)-Blu-Ray- Venice is its grand decay is a character of its own in this brilliantly unsettling film.
Oct. 27
94. Lord of Illusions (1995)-TV- 20 years on, Clive Barker's tale of black magic still works.
95. Late Phases (2014)-Netflix-:**** One of the top FTVs this year with a terrific cast of well-known character actors.
96. The Undying Monster (1942)-DVD-** Cracked open my Fox Horror Classics box. The movie was OK, but it just didn't reach me.
Oct. 28
97. The Sixth Sense (1999)-Blu-Ray- A touching, gentle film that still works even after the twist was revealed. Bruce Willis delivers a solid performance as a disconnected psychiatrist trying to help Haley Joe Osment face his gift.
Oct. 29
98. Dance of the Dead (2008)-TV-**** I enjoyed this zombie comedy more than I thought I would. It has a sweet romantic center.
99. Stir of Echoes (1999)-DVD-**** An outstanding ghost story and one of my Halloween standards to watch.
100. Sssssss (1973)-DVD-** A cheesy movie about a mad scientist who turns his lab assistants into snakes. Strother Martin could sell even the silliest stories.
101. Interview With the Vampire (1994)-DVD-**** Tom Cruise is excellent as the foppish Lestat, Brad Pitt less so as the titular vampire.
102. Kuroneko (1968)-Blu-Ray-**** Moody, atmospheric, surreal, Kuroneko is a brilliant film that draws on the traditions of Noh theater to achieve its effect.
Oct. 30
103. The Legacy (1978)-DVD-*** Agatha Christie meets Satan: Two young Americans encounter demonic doings at an English estate.
104. The Vault of Horror (1973)-DVD-*** One of the better Amicus anthologies.
105. Puppet Master 4: The Demon (1993)--DVD-* Toulon's puppets run amuck in a lab, and the hero is played by the guy who was the Antichrist in those awful Left Behind movies.
106. Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed (1969)--TV- A surprisingly mature entry in the Hammer series. Peter Cushing blackmails a couple into doing his dirty work, and disaster for everyone.
107. Dracula AD 1972 (1972)-[B]TV--*** A lame attempt by Hammer to bring Dracula's Victorian horror to the present-day, which of course makes this terribly dated.
108. Cat People (1942)-TV--**** Val Lewton's atmospheric masterpiece.
109. The Taking of Deborah Logan (2013)--Netflix-****Losing a parent to Alzheimers is a terrible thing to endure; losing your parent to possession by an evil spirit has to be worse.
HALLOWEEN!
110. The Halloween Tree (1993)-DVD- Ray Bradbury left us some wonderful stories, and few are as evocative of the days when Halloween was a night for childhood fun and scares.
111. Tales of Halloween (2015)--Viooz-**** Very enjoyable Halloween-themed anthology. With 10 shorts crammed into a 97-minute movie, none of the segments overstays its welcome, and there were a couple I'd like to see expanded. Not an instant classic like Trick R Treat, but tons better than the V/H/S movies.
112. The Devil's Bride (1968)--TV- A classic Hammer film that needs to get a US Blu-Ray release ASAP.

Re: The 11th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31) ***The List Threa
Title in BLACK: DVD/Blu Ray from my personal collection.
Title in RED: Online streaming (either Netflix or Youtube)
Title in PURPLE: Seen on regular TV programming.
Title in GREEN: Seen in movie theater during current theatrical run.
Title in BLUE: DVD / Blu Ray rental
* = First-time viewing
September 30 (after sunset)
1. 31 FILM SUBSET Carnival of Souls (1962) Still holds up pretty well and its dreamy atmosphere is still compelling. Repeated viewings reveal some nuances in the main character that are in accord with her supernatural state of being.
2. THEME NIGHT: Niche/Surreal Lovely Molly (2011) Writer-Director Eduardo Sanchez is still trying to make lightning strike twice after changing the horror genre with The Blair Witch Project. This time with a very subtle film that sparingly uses elements of found-footage but relies more on character and mood. Does it make sense? No, but then again, it's not supposed to. With an ending every bit as ambiguous as Blair Witch, this is one of those that you will either love or hate.
October 1
3. 31 FILM SUBSET Night of the Demon* (1980) Don't remember having seen this one but it did seem familiar upon viewing it. An entertaining film that somehow mixes the Bigfoot legend with Satanism though not very effectively. Worth the watch.
4. THEME NIGHT: They'll devour you all Piranha 3D (2010) Seen on 2D DVD. Director Alexandre Aja who wowed us with High Tension and The Hills Have Eyes now abandons all pretence and just goes for the gross-out combined with plenty of nudity to keep things interesting. Watch it for the boobs, if nothing else.
October 2
5. THEME NIGHT: Caretakers / Hotels The Innkeepers (2011) I'd been wanting to re-watch this movie ever since I saw it in theatres when it first came out. What really elevates it from most ghost films is that the characters are interesting and provide humor without being total jerks. The movie takes its time setting up the story but that helps add to the creepy atmosphere without going over the top with creaky doors and moving furniture.
6. I Bury the Living* (1958)
October 3
7. 31 FILM SUBSET The Wicker Man (1973) Comments in discussion thread.
8. THEME NIGHT: Christopher Lee Count Dracula and His Vampire Bride AKA The Satanic Rites of Dracula (1973) The stakes are raised in this Dracula movie set in modern (1973) times as the count seeks to destroy all humanity by releasing a deadly plague. Peter Cushing as Van Helsing is there to stop him. The Satanic aspect is given more screen time in this movie than in in others in the series.
9. Bitten (2014) Episodes: Descent* / Settling* Not much happens in theses 2 episodes, just a lot of talking and internal strife within the werewolf clan that is pretty damn boring.
October 4
10. THEME NIGHT: Made-for-TV Sybil (1976) Part 1 (WILDCARD 1) This may not be a horror movie per se but it is horrific as it deals with the terrors of the mind. A young woman (Sally Field in a bravura performance) lives a waking nightmare as her personality is split into many different personas. Just watch the first 15 minutes of this made for TV movie and tell me it's not creepy.
11. THEME NIGHT: Made-for-TV Sybil (1976) Part 2
12. Piranha* (1978) Incredibly, I had not seen the original Jaws rip-off that is Piranha, only it's remake. Barbara Steel is worth the price of admission alone.
13. Dark Mirror* (2007) A woman and her family move into a house, strange things happen, no one believes her, strange goings-on linked to house's mysterious past. Blah. Absolutely nothing original. Lead actress is attractive but that's about it. Skip it.
October 5
14. Empire of the Ants* (1977) Giant ants with mind control power to boot. Joan Collins' bitchiness make it worth a look.
15. Frankenstein Unbound (1990) Interesting take on the story mixing elements of science fiction in with the familiar story.
16. THEME NIGHT: Girl-On-Girl Fascination* (1979) Beautiful women in a castle + Jean Rollin directing = Nudity ensues.
October 6
17. Dark Corners* (2006) Thora Birch stars in a double role as a woman having dreams where she is someone else entirely. The whole thing of moving from one identity to another gets old after awhile and lessens the impact of the twist ending. Mildly entertaining.
18. THEME NIGHT: Winter Whisper (2007) Modest but effective chiller about a group of kidnappers who get much more than they bargained for when they abduct a mysterious child hoping for a big ransom. Future The Walking Dead alumni Sarah Wayne Callies and Michael Rooker star.
October 7
19. THEME NIGHT: Edgar Allan Poe La Mansión de la Locura (House of Madness AKA The Mansion of Madness AKA Dr. Tarr's Torture Dungeon)* (1973) Based loosely on Poe's tale The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Feather this Mexican film by cult Alucarda director Juan López Montezuma is just about as weird as it gets. Don't try to make sense of it and just enjoy the madness.
October 8
20. THEME NIGHT: Eyes Starry Eyes (2014) Low-key film about an actress willing to do anything to make it in films - even sell her soul. One of my favourites of recent years.
21. The Gathering (2003) Christina Ricci stars as an amnesiac in an English village visited by strange events including an early Christian church that holds a dar secret. More of a mystery tale than horror but nonetheless enjoyable and the theme is very original that to my knowledge has not been used before.
October 9
22. THEME NIGHT: Zombies Dead and Buried (1981) The zombie genre as we know it today is about a people with guns blowing walking (or more often running) corpses away. For my film I'll go back to the original definition of a zombie as a dead body brought back to life via voodoo. Dead and Buried is in my opinion the best zombie film since Night of the Living Dead and one of the best of the entire horror genre in the 80's. I saw it when it originally came out and have seen it several times since then but I had been waiting for the challenge to crack open my new BluRay edition of the film and it looks great and still holds up very well. The effects by the legendary Stan Winston not only still hold up but are every bit as effective as they were back then. A classic.
23. Bitten (201) Episodes: Caged* / Ready* The end of season 1 ends with a rather blah war between the warring werewolf clans where nobody changes into a werewolf. This series could really be so much more.
October 10
24. The Vatican Tapes* (2015) The title leads one to believe this is a found-footage film but the "tapes" in question are irrelevant to the movie. I loathe the found-footage sub-genre so I was glad this aspect was minimised but the movie itself, despite having an above-average cast never really goes anywhere interesting.
25. THEME NIGHT: European Wake Wood (2010) A sequel to The Wicker Man in all but name since it shares the same pagan themes and creepy vibe. and perhaps the best of the new Hammer films that have been put out by the studio.
26. Jennifer's Shadow (2004) Faye Dunaway is a reclusive old woman whose family is cursed by a mysterious illness. Gina Philips (of Jeepers Creepers fame) also stars. Filmed in Argentina which gives the movie a different look.
October 11
27. Ghost Whisperer, S3 (2007) Episodes: The underneath* / Don't try this at home* Jennifer Loves Hewitt´s cleavage is the main reason to watch this series.
28. Howling: Reborn (2011) One more in The Howling series. Does anyone care by this point? Nothing to see here, believe me.
29. 31 FILM SUBSET: The Last House on the Left* (1972) Incredibly, I had never seen the original movie, only the remake. I was puzzled by the inclusion of so much "keystone cops" comedy which kind of ruined the effect of the horror. The use and sometimes overuse of comedy was a characteristic that sometimes worked for Craven and sometimes didn't - see rebel for Cursed below as an example.
30. THEME NIGHT: Wes Craven Cursed (2005) I had high hopes for this one when it came out thinking we may finally have a worthy werewolf film to follow in the footsteps of American Werewolf and The Howling - I was wrong. Craven goes for cheap jump scares and slapstick comedy in this tame werewolf flick. The plot of "who is the werewolf?" is really not that interesting so the reveal at the end just falls flat.
October 12
31. Ghost Whisperer, S3 (2007) Episodes: Haunted hero* / No safe place*
32. THEME NIGHT: 1965 Nightmare Castle (1965) Barbara Steele as a ghost out for revenge. As in Black Sunday, here she plays a double role as the villainess and the ingenue.
33. THEME NIGHT: 1990 Prom Night III: The Last Kiss* (1990) Dear God, did I just watch this? I'm afraid I did and nothing can erase the fact. The cursed Mary Lou is back as a third-rate Freddy Kreuger-type character.
October 13
34. 31 FILM SUBSET: The Babadook (2014) See my comments in Discussion thread.
35. Ghost Whisperer, S3 (2007) Episodes: Weight of what was* / Double exposure*
36. THEME NIGHT: Basements 100 Feet* (2008) Famke Janssen as a woman under house arrest besieged by the ghost of her abusive husband. Could have been a lot better.
October 14
37. Shelter AKA 6 Souls (2013) Pretty good story about possession that at least tries something original with the tale. Julianne Moore adds a touch of class to the proceedings.
38. THEME NIGHT: Police Stations The Car (1977) I simply cannot get enough of this movie, it just never gets old. I think I've watched it for all the challenges. I've just GOT to upgrade my copy to a Blu ray.
October 15
39. THEME NIGHT: Anthologies Tales of Terror (1962) Vincent Price at his best. Great anthology adapted by Richard Matheson from a trio of Edgar Alan Poe stories.
40. THEME NIGHT: Anthologies Part 2 Hellblock 13 (1999) Three terror tales told by a death row inmate. Scream Queen Debbie Rochor introduces each tale and stars in the wraparound segment
October 16
41. THEME NIGHT: Evil Love Horns (2013) Based on the novel by Joe Hill, this tale of love and betrayal goes farther than most horror movies in giving us complex characters with real motivations.
October 17
42. THEME NIGHT: VHS Video Covers Curtains* (1983) A twist on the old "women at a remote location get killed off one by one" plot. Here the women are not teenagers but women who are auditioning for a role at a director's estate.
43. The Woman in Black (2012) Perhaps the most Hammer-like of the new batch of Hammer films. A decent ghost story that really lays the atmosphere on pretty thick.
44. Ghost Whisperer, S3 (2007) Episodes: Unhappy medium* / Bad Blood*
October 18
45. Ghost Whisperer, S3 (2007) Episodes: All ghosts lead to Grandview* / Holiday spirit* Dee Wallace guest stars in the latter episode.
46. Penny Dreadful, S2 (201) Episodes: The Nightcomers* / Evil spirits in heavenly places*
47. THEME NIGHT: Churches Dracula A.D. 1972 (1972) Say what you will but this is perhaps my favourite of all the Dracula sequels starring Christopher Lee. The mod atmosphere (which by 1972 was already passé), the sense of menace, and both Lee and Cushing in top form. All this plus Caroline Munro and the no less delectable Stephanie Beacham. Seen this one more times than I care to admit and it still holds up for me.
October 19
48. THEME NIGHT: Schools Detention* (2011) A brainless teen comedy masquerading as a slasher and at the same time with social commentary woven in? This flick gets points for just going all out where no teen comedy has gone before.
October 20
49. THEME NIGHT: Vampires Horror of Dracula (1958) The first Dracula Hammer film. Still classy after all these years.
50. Burnt Offerings* (1976) Very long but never boring thanks to its stellar cast (Karen Black, Oliver Reed and Bette Davis). A family moves into an old mansion and that has a strange influence on them. Are there ghosts or is the family going mad? Worth a look.
October 21
51. THEME NIGHT: Libraries Dracula 2000 (2000) Gerard Butler over-acts as the count and Christopher Plummer does a decent Van Helsing in this modern-day Dracula movie where he is revived and taken to New Orleans.
52. Penny Dreadful (2015) Episodes: Above the Vaulted Sky* / Glorious Horrors*
53. The Inhabitants* (2015) A total waste of time for all involved. A couple moves into an old house haunted by a ghost from the Salem witch trials. Pointless found footage scenes. The usual stuff happens.
October 22
54. THEME NIGHT: Theaters Demons*
October 23
55. THEME NIGHT: Amusement Parks Piranha DD (2012) Going even further with the T & A than the first one I enjoyed it enough to own it on Blu Ray (albeit for a cheap-o price).
October 24
56. THEME NIGHT: Anything The Dead Zone, S3 (2004) Episodes: Finding Rachel parts 1 & 2
57. The Dead Zone, S3 (2004) Episodes: Collision / The cold hard truth
58. Espectro AKA Demon Inside* (2013) First part is boring as hell and it pointlessly uses found-footage security-cam shots that add very little to the film. Second half picks up a bit and gets a bit more interesting but not enough to make up for the first half.
October 25
59. THEME NIGHT: Occult Detectives / Vs The Batman Vs Dracula (2005) I suppose that because this is a kid's cartoon the vampires Dracula creates with his bite are not the undead but more like afflicted zombies whose condition can be reversed. Pretty good action and great animation.
60. When the Lights Went Out* (2012) Rather standard haunted house flick made interesting only because of it's very well realised 1970's setting and that it claims to be a true story.
October 26
61. THEME NIGHT: Giallo Sette note in nero AKA The Psychic (1977) The beautiful Jennifer O'Neill is a woman with prescient abilities that witnesses a murder. More of a crime drama than horror it is nonetheless worth a view and director Lucio Fulci eschews blood and guts for a more subdued approach that stresses atmosphere and pace.
62. The Dead Zone, S3 (2004) Episodes: Total awareness / No questions asked
October 27
63. THEME NIGHT: Werewolves The Wolfman (2010) Still one of my favourite werewolf films.
64. The Dead Zone, S3 (2004) Episodes: Looking glass / Speak now
October 28
65. THEME NIGHT: Ghosts Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension* (2015) The only series that makes a halfway decent use of the found footage genre, this seems (I hope) to be the last entry in the series. Long scenes of utter boredom and banality are combined with those of sheer terror as we finally see what all the Paranormal Activity was leading up to. A good movie but let's hope it's the last one.
66. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) A classic that still holds up. Relentless in its horror.
October 29
67. THEME NIGHT: Rats Nosferatu (1974) Director Werner Herzog piles on the atmosphere for all its worth and Klaus Kinski as Dracula goes all out in his performance.
68. The Shining (1980) Seen with commentary by the inventor of the Steadycam.
October 30
69. THEME NIGHT: Witches Salem Witch Trials (2002) TV mini-series, Part 1
70. THEME NIGHT: Witches Salem Witch Trials (2002) TV mini-series, Part 2
71. Hemlock Grove, S3 (2015) Episodes: A place to fall* / Souls on ice*
October 31
72. Crimson Peak* (2015) Director Guillermo del Toro goes all out with the visuals and presents us with a beautiful film that pays homage to classic horror.
73. Theme Night: Halloween Tales of Halloween* (2015)
74. Haunts* (1977)
75. Chained* (2012)
76. Venture into the literary world: Revival by Stephen King (2014)

* = First-time viewing

October 20
49. THEME NIGHT: Vampires Horror of Dracula (1958) The first Dracula Hammer film. Still classy after all these years.

57. The Dead Zone, S3 (2004) Episodes: Collision / The cold hard truth

October 25

41b. iZombie Season 2, Episode 2 – "Zombie Bro" (2015)☼
42. Dark Shadows: The Vampire Curse (1967-68)☼
Checklist:
WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 30
1. V/H/S: Viral (2014)☼
- Easily the weakest of the three despite not having a segment by Ti West. "Dante the Great" was the best vignette followed by "Parallel Monsters."
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 1
"I'm So Happy I Found You" (2014) [short film]☼
- Creepy little ghost story I saw at a film festival. A pleasant surprise!
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 2
2. Amer (2009)☼
- A bizarre homage to Italian giallo films. It's as if the makers said, "We want to make the most sensual film that has ever been sensed!"
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 3
3. Tucker & Dale Vs. Evil (2010)
- One of the funniest horror comedies in recent years!
- Another homage to giallo films, but this time a parody. Incredibly funny, and it nails the aesthetic to a tee!
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 4
5. The Fly (1958)
- It'd been years since I'd seen this. Holds up wonderfully!
- Not nearly as good as the original, but a fun B-movie nonetheless.
MONDAY, OCTOBER 5
7. The Watcher in the Woods (1980)
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 6
WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 7
8. Spring (2014)☼
- A surprisingly effective love story. Oh, there's horror, to be sure, but a love story all the same.
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 8
9a. Halloween Wars: Season Five, Episode 1 – "Infestation" (2015)☼
9b. Kolchak: The Nightstalker: Episode 1 – "The Ripper" (1974)
- I haven't seen this series in its entirety yet, but this is a pretty decent start. It kind of feels like a bit of a retread of the TV movies that preceded it, but I suppose you can't blame the makers for wanting to repeat a successful formula.
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 9
10. The Brood (1979)
- One of David Cronenberg's best, possibly my favorite of his. This and The Fly (1986) are such raw expressions of personal experience turned into terrifying literal horror.
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 10
11. The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920)☼
- I'm slightly embarrassed it took me this long to get around to watching this, but I'm glad I finally did. Having seen clips and stills throughout the years, I've long loved the production design and especially how it was appropriated by early American horror films. (James Whale's Frankenstein is probably my favorite example.)
12. Maniac (2012)☼
- I must admit that I'm not a huge fan of the original—the stalk 'n' slash subgenre just really isn't my thing—but it's definitely better than this. Also, if a movie is going to employ a flash gimmick, it had better justify it and make me feel as though it couldn't have been told as well any other way. Given that the original shows that this story can be told without the first-person P.O.V.... The only thing I will say in the 2012 version's favor is that I bought the Elijah Wood's attempts at being normal more than Joe Spinell's seemingly effortless ability to act normal sometimes and then be out-of-control crazy at others.
13. The Pit and the Pendulum (1961)☼
- Watching this really made me wish Barbara Steele had been cast as Juliana in The Masque of the Red Death opposite Price. Steele is so great at playing true, malevolent evil, as evidenced in this and Black Sunday. Cinema really missed out by not having her co-star with Vincent Price in more films!
14. The Final Girls (2015)☼
- This deconstruction of slasher films manages to be very funny, rather poignant, and a bittersweet examination of the loss of a loved one. But it's far from a downer. Seriously, check this one out!
15. Insidious: Chapter 3 (2015)☼
- Unfortunately, the people working on this franchise will never recapture the magic that made the first film such a thrilling, terrifying experience, but I did find myself a little wary that The Man Who Can't Breathe might pop up in my bedroom that night.
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 11
16. The Nightmare (2015)☼
- So now I'm paranoid that I'll eventually acquire recurring sleep paralysis...
17. Starry Eyes (2014)☼
- I wasn't quite on board with some of the thematic elements of this, but I liked it overall. I would warn anyone who is squeamish about body horror to avoid.
18. Wes Craven's New Nightmare (1994)
- I think this is nearly as good as the original Nightmare on Elm Street. I'm not sure that Freddy is "darker" or "more evil" in this than he was in the first or second film, but it definitely brought him back to being a malevolent force as opposed to the Bugs Bunny-esque pranskter we saw in Freddy's Dead.
MONDAY, OCTOBER 12
19. Witchfinder General (1968)☼
- I kind of found this to be more generally unpleasant to watch more than anything. I can imagine this was most likely greeted in its day much in the same way that something like Saw or Hostel was about a decade ago.
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 13
20. Birth of the Living Dead (2013)☼
- I already knew a lot of the info in this, but it was entertaining and informative all the same!
WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 14
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 15
21. The Pyramid (2014)☼
- Almost a good movie. I really like the melding of adventure and horror, which was done rather well in As Above, So Below, but the third act kind of screws the pooch. The monster, while a fascinating and original concept, isn't very well executed, especially due to the awful CGI.
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 16
22. Crimson Peak (2015)☼
- This marks the first time I've felt that one of Guillermo Del Toro's English-language films has been as great as his Spanish-language films.
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 17
23. House of 1000 Corpses (2003)
- My favorite bit of this is the last fifteen to twenty minutes when it basically turns into a haunted house walkthrough in movie form.
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 18
24. The Fog (1980)
- I enjoy this movie more every time I see it!
25. Pet Sematary (1989)
- Not nearly as scary to me as it was when I was 10 years old. This is ripe for a remake.
26. Jeepers Creepers (2001)
- I really love this movie. It does a great job establishing the characters right up front, and the suspense sequences are incredibly well paced and shot.
MONDAY, OCTOBER 19
27. Ravenous (1999)
- This is a fun dark comedy that offers a nice twist on the cannibal subgenre. Great cast, great performances!
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 20
28a. Halloween Wars: Season Five, Episode 2 – "Hybrid Horror" (2015)☼
28b. Halloween Wars: Season Five, Episode 3 – "Grave Robber" (2015)☼
29. Dracula (1974)
- Jack Palance is a menacing Dracula, but the rest of the movie lets him down. Dan Curtis's uninspired direction and the flat, overlit cinematography make this a chore to sit through.
WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 21
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 22
30. Dead & Buried (1981)☼
- Didn't do it for me.
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 23
31. Corpse Bride (2005)
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 24
32. Dracula (1931)
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 25
33. Eyes Without a Face (1960)
- Arthouse horror film with a squirm-inducing face extraction sequence. Incredibly good!
34. Jennifer's Body (2009)
- The wife had seen this already, but I hadn't. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. I never thought I would get creeped out by Megan Fox, but she managed to to do so a couple times.
MONDAY, OCTOBER 26
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 27
35. Father's Day (2011)☼
- As far as Astron-6's stuff goes, this isn't my favorite. The Editor was a much more focused movie, as was Manborg. This was just kind of all over the place. Admittedly, it had some great gore effects and some rather humorous moments.
WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 28
36. Let's Scare Jessica to Death (1971)☼
- Not bad. There's some interesting ideas in this, and it has a spooky climax.
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 29
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 30
37. Halloween (2007)
- My second viewing. Rob Zombie's remake is pretty lame, giving Michael Myers a poor white trash origin story and amping up the brutality to the point that it's neither fun nor suspenseful.
38. Mystery Science Theater 3000 - Attack of the Giant Leeches (1992)
39. Army of Darkness (1993)
- Not my first time watching the movie ever, but my first time watching the international cut. Unfortunately, I find it just as problematic as any of the other cuts with the exception of the TV edit. Unfortunately, the TV version is in pretty bad shape, which doesn't bode well for future viewings. I guess I'm sticking with the director's cut and then switching over to the theatrical version for the ending from now on.
40. Prom Night (1980)☼
- Well, that sucked.
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 31
41a. iZombie Season 2, Episode 1 – "Grumpy Old Liv" (2015)☼
41b. iZombie Season 2, Episode 2 – "Zombie Bro" (2015)☼
42. Dark Shadows: The Vampire Curse (1967-68)☼
