Re: 7th Annual Criterion Challenge - List Thread
*= first time viewing blue= personal BluRay black= personal DVD green= streaming orange= borrowed BD/DVD August 31st 1. Blow Out (Brian De Palma, 1981 / United States) --- Spine #562 --- Sound guy Jack (John Travolta) records the assassination of a popular governor and rescues the dead man's escort (Nancy Allen). Both characters get entangled in the political conspiracy surrounding the assassination. De Palma uses myriad cinematic flourishes to explore filmmaking, paranoia, and how they effect our idea of Truth. There's a lot of wonderful commentary on the seedier sides of film and politics as well as blind patriotism. September 1st 2. The Rose (Mark Rydell, 1979 / United States)* --- Spine #757 --- Rose (Bette Midler) is a rock goddess with real talent, adoring fans, and a brutal addiction. She's both buoyed and bullied by her manager (Alan Bates) and her new man (Frederic Forrest). The film looks at the toll celebrity can take, creating a world that brings out the worst tendencies in people. Rose has constructed a world for herself that allows her to act out and feel completely justified. Considering we still have celebrities who overdose or randomly announce their future Presidential campaign at awards shows, the film's themes feel timely. 3. Kind Hearts and Coronets (Robert Hamer, 1949 / United Kingdom) --- Spine #325 (watched non-Criterion DVD) --- Driven by greed, avarice, and the desire to avenge his disinherited mother, Louis (Dennis Price) starts murdering his family members (Alec Guinness) to get the earldom. Each of the unfortunates embodies a quirk or foible of the ruling class, and the comedy keeps getting darker and darker. Much of the humor comes from the way British civility persists even in the face of absurdity and ruthlessness. Also, the incomparable Joan Greenwood plays Sibella, Louis's childhood friend and love interest, and she has the best voice. September 2nd 4. Je tu il elle (Chantal Akerman, 1975 / France, Belgium)* --- Eclipse Series #19 --- Chantal Akerman plays a woman who lives in isolation. When she finally leaves, she has romantic trysts with a truck driver and an old girlfriend. The film is broken up into large takes that often depict mundane activities (driving, eating, sex). In the early parts of the film, the character narrates her actions in a austere room. Several times she eats spoonfuls of sugar from a bag, and I got very anxious; it made me feel like I do when friends eat sour cream or butter straight. Writing about this makes me shudder. The film focuses on themes of depression, isolation, and sex. The trucker gives a long monologue about the role of sex in his life and how the years change it, and the lesbian sex scene goes on for a rather long time. September 3rd 5. Some Like It Hot (Billy Wilder, 1959 / United States) --- Laserdisc #74 (watched non-Criterion BD) --- After witnesses a mob hit, Joe (Tony Curtis) and Jerry (Jack Lemmon) pose as female musicians and join a women's band on their way to Florida. When I first saw this film, I wasn't really impressed, but every time I revisit it, I like it more and more. The dialogue is witty, and Marilyn Monroe is sexy. Who could ask for anything more? September 10th 6. Seven Samurai (Shichinin no samurai) (Akira Kurosawa, 1954 / Japan) --- Spine #2 --- When their village is threatened by bandits, a group of farmers recruit seven samurai to protect them. Lead by stoic Kambei (Takashi Shimura) and buoyed by brash Kikuchiyo (Toshiro Mifune), the group teach the villagers how to defend themselves. Kurosawa imbues his action epic with humor and pathos, and I always find myself laughing and crying. He also takes a standard good vs. evil story and complicates every part of it; most characters are morally complex and have done their share of good and bad. 7. La collectionneuse (Eric Rohmer, 1967 / France)* --- Spine #346 --- Adrien (Patrick Bauchau), a gloomy art dealer, vacations at a friend's ramshackle summer home. He hopes for seclusion and introspection, but this is hampered by Haydée (Haydée Politoff) and Daniel (Daniel Pommereulle) intruding. The three embark on a series of trysts and sexual politicking that brings out the absolute worst in the trio. This is one of those French dramas that leave me a little cold. 8. Safety Last! (Fred Newmeyer & Sam Taylor, 1923 / United States)* --- Spine #662 (watched with Carl Davis score) --- Harold Lloyd plays an eager young man who moves to the big city to make it big. Despite only being a department store clerk, he pretends to be a huge success in his letters to his girlfriend. When she visits unexpectedly, things get complicated. I'm a fan of Lloyd's brand of slapstick which often relies on sight gags. This film's famous set piece (a daring climb up the side of a building) is both thrilling and hilarious. September 11th 9. Spellbound (Alfred Hitchcock, 1945 / United States) --- Spine #136 (watched non-Criterion BD) --- When Dr. Edwardes (Gregory Peck) takes over a mental institution, he immediately falls for Dr. Constance Petersen (Ingrid Bergman), but he's harboring secrets that only her psychoanalysis can uncover. The films where Hitchcock delves blatantly into psychology are never my favorites, but they often examine mental health in a revolutionary way for the time. Even now, there are many stigmas and misconceptions surrounding mental illnesses, so it's nice to see Hitchcock grappling with these issues in 1945. September 12th 10. A Canterbury Tale (Michael Powell & Emeric Pressburger, 1944 / United Kingdom)* --- Spine #341 --- A trio of travelers are waylaid in a small English town by a mystery. As they attempt to unravel the mystery, we learn about their fears and disappointments as well as the quaint workings of the town. The film is a lovingly paced meditation on individuals in war and the joys of the world that we hurry by. I found myself entirely wrapped up in the stories and characters - especially Alison (Shelia Sim) who embodies gumption and practicality while hiding away a great sadness. 11. The Blood of the Poet (Le sang d’un poète) (Jean Cocteau, 1930 / France)* --- Spine #67 --- Jean Cocteau's experimental film follows a handsome poet (Enrique Rivero) who awakens a statue and falls through a mirror into a surreal world of motifs and tableaus. It plays like an extension of the dreams in Spellbound, albeit without the pat interpretations. I'm excited to delve into the bonus features to gain some perspective. September 15th 12. Murmur of the Heart (Le souffle au coeur) (Louis Malle, 1971 / France)* --- Spine #328 --- Laurent Chevalier (Benoit Ferreux) comes of age in 1950s Paris. He loves his mother and dislikes his father. He is both loved and harassed by his two older brothers. I enjoy a good coming-of-age story, and this one is right up there with Mon Oncle Antoine. All of the characters are complex - especially Laurent who is both precocious and dumbfounded - and I found myself drawn into their world of privilege. 13. Godzilla, King of the Monsters! (Ishirô Honda & Terry O. Morse, 1956 / United States, Japan) --- supplemental film on Godzilla (Spine #594) --- The American reworking of 1954's Gojira could be used in a course about editing. Raymond Burr plays Steve Martin, an American journalist who happens to know everyone involved in the original story, and is edited into many of the scenes and provides voiceover in others. Because of the awkwardly inserted character, he may be one of the most passive protagonists outside of classic Disney princesses. September 17th 14. Fantastic Mr. Fox (Wes Anderson, 2009 / United States) --- Spine #700 --- Mr. Fox (George Clooney) is a former chicken thief who comes out of retirement to perform one last job. Unfortunately, he goes after a trio of evil farmers and endangers his family and community. Wes Anderson and stop motion animation are a brilliant match, and this may be one of the most perfect cartoons ever made. The standout character is Fox's son, Ash (Jason Schwartzman), a frustrated athlete who is *hand gesture* different. 15. Apart from You (Kimi to wakarete) (Mikio Naruse, 1933 / Japan)* --- Eclipse Series #26: Silent Naruse (watched with score) --- Kikue (Mitsuko Yoshikawa) works as a geisha to send her son to school. Terugiku (Sumiko Mizukubo) is in love with the son but decides to earn money as a geisha to save her sister from this indignity. Naruse gets inventive with his camera and what he puts in it. There is an energy to the way he frames and shoots faces and domestic objects that is very different from Ozu's quiet, mannered compositions. September 18th 16. Orpheus (Orphée) (Jean Cocteau, 1950 / France) --- Spine #68 --- Celebrated poet Orpheus (Jean Marais) is drawn into the shadowy world of the afterlife after falling in love with a beautiful princess (Maria Casarès) and must save his wife (Marie Déa) from the clutches of Death. Cocteau is a brilliant filmmaker who packs enough character, imagery, and style into his films to justify the many books written about them. The Princess is one of the most complex characters on film - by turns terrifying and vulnerable, sinister and tragic. 17. The Emperor Jones (Dudley Murphy, 1933 / United States)* --- Spine #370 --- Brutus Jones (Paul Robeson) gets a job as a Pullman porter and ends up the tyrannical leader of a small island nation. The film deftly jumps from genre to genre (sometimes staying for just one scene), and Brutus has a full spectrum of experiences. His hubris is his fatal flaw, and he achieves such power that it's astonishing to watch his downfall. September 20th 18. Testament of Orpheus (Le Testament de Orphée) (Jean Cocteau, 1959 / France)* --- Spine #69 --- Jean Cocteau plays a poet unstuck in time, traveling from set piece to set piece in order to explore themes of art and humanity. We see the fates of characters from Orpheus as well as others in the same predicament. Cocteau sets up the poet and the filmmaker as magician (in much the same way Orson Welles does) and looks at the reasons we makes film and way it impacts us so much. September 21st 19. Badlands (Terrence Malick, 1973 / United States / DVRed from TCM)* --- Spine #651 September 28th 20. Kuroneko (Kaneto Shindo, 1968 / Japan) --- Spine #584 September 30th 21. Carnival of Souls (Herk Harvey, 1962 / United States) --- Spine #63 Extras Spoiler:

Re: 7th Annual Criterion Challenge - List Thread
So... I got distracted this month but at least got 1 in (so far)...
Safe was a nicely moody film that at times seemed too obvious and other times to subtle leaving me feeling like I "got" many of the general themes but maybe missed something in interpretation. It's at times slow (perhaps intentionally so) and although some of the satirical context seems obvious it doesn't got for cheap shots with pointed commentary and is surprisingly muted (which again makes be suspect more subtext). |
