Re: No More Simpsons on DVD
Would go ahead and order this if it were Blu-ray, already have all the seasons on DVD and switched to Blu-ray when it did. Haven't bought season 18 since they downgraded that back down to DVD and likely won't get that til I've actually watched all the previous ones. |
Re: No More Simpsons on DVD
Stark Raving Dad has been removed from TV syndication, online streaming, and future DVD releases.
https://slate.com/culture/2019/03/si...ad-pulled.html The Simpsons Pulled an Episode Featuring Michael Jackson. That Was a Mistake. It doesn’t get to hide from the past. March 11, 2019 One unexpected fallout from our cultural reckoning with the life and work of Michael Jackson is the erasure of a Simpsons episode. “Stark Raving Dad,” the premiere of the show’s third season, tells the story of Homer being committed to an insane asylum, where he meets a patient named Leon Kompowsky, who claims to be Michael Jackson. Homer, not knowing who Michael Jackson is, believes him. Antics ensue. The central joke is that Leon is actually voiced by Michael Jackson, a joke extended further by his use of a pseudonym in the end credits. Following the renewed allegations of child sexual abuse against Jackson, executive producer James L. Brooks announced last week that The Simpsons will no longer include the episode in syndication packages, streaming, or even future DVD releases of the show. It’s gone. But don’t call it a book burning, he cautions. “This is our book,” he told the Wall Street Journal, “and we’re allowed to take out a chapter.” Spoiler:

Re: No More Simpsons on DVD
Michael Jackson has been dead for ten years.
It's not like he's going to benefit from being featured in that episode of The Simpsons in any way now. Wonder what they're going to do when it comes out, posthumously, that one of Hollywood's golden age stars was a violent rapist. Are all of his movies going to be pulled out of circulation? The simple fact of the matter is that a lot of writers, actors, directors, musicians, and artists are (and were assholes). Thoroughly repellent human beings. H.P. Lovecraft was a virulent racist. John Lennon was a homophobe who beat up women. Ezra Pound was a Nazi sympathizer. Salvador Dali abused women and was a fascist. I don't think the world is well-served by throwing their works down the memory hole. |
Re: No More Simpsons on DVD
MIchael Jackson didn't even take a credit for being in the episode. That's what sucks so much. I've got the dvd and bought the episode off of Vudu before it was gone.

Re: No More Simpsons on DVD
Can you still watch the episode on Vudu if you "bought" it prior?

Re: No More Simpsons on DVD
That's baloney. Even if MJ was guilty (and as much as I lean towards always believing victims, there's enough reasonable doubt here that it's not crystal clear), the episode itself is still bigger than one celebrity voice (who isn't even credited).
It should be included but with one of the warnings in front of like the old racist cartoons. |
Re: No More Simpsons on DVD
I'm hoarding two DVD sets with the banned Michael Jackson episodes. I don't think it's ever coming back, so I expect them to go up in value.

Re: No More Simpsons on DVD
What would the warning say?
The following episode of The Simpsons features a voice actor who probably buggered several kids. His behavior does not reflect the views or values of the Walt Disney Corporation or any of its subsidiaries. Viewer discretion is advised. |
Re: No More Simpsons on DVD
It’s more that Jackson used that appearance as a “recruitment tool” to win over little kids when the show was the most popular on TV and the show runners probably feel terrible about that.

Re: No More Simpsons on DVD
I just got Season 18 ordered on dvd, and I'll purchase season 19 next week. I'll then have all the seasons 1-20 that have been released on physical media.
