TCM Features 7 Films by Schlock Meister Bert I. Gordon Thursday

Director Bert I. Gordon specialized in the kind of "low-budget wonders" that played drive-ins and "Kiddy Matinees," and TCM will be airing a 7-film salute to him all night Thursday. Among the films featured are THE MAGIC SWORD, VILLAGE of the GIANTS, TORMENTED and PICTURE MOMMY DEAD. Here's the full Thursday night sked on TCM.

8:00 PM
Tormented (1960)
9:30 PM
Cyclops (1957)
10:45 PM
Attack of the Puppet People (1958)
12:15 AM
Magic Sword, The (1962)
1:45 AM
Boy and the Pirates, The (1960)
3:15 AM
Picture Mommy Dead (1966)
4:45 AM
Village of the Giants (1965)
If you asked me to recommend one film from that batch, it would be THE MAGIC SWORD, which I loved as a kid and when I saw it again as a grown-up, I was still really impressed with it. It has a lot of imagination for such a low-budget film.

Bert I. Gordon is the cover story in this month's Rue Morgue magazine.

Shouldn't it be a given that the film has to qualify for the challenge to even get the check? Like how I can't watch a romance film during the horror challenge, even if it stars someone from the checklist?

For the most part. However we do have some categories that allow in otherwise non-eligible films, such as Box Office Bombs.

^ Cutthroat Island, and Battlefield Earth are two of those I think. Huge budgets, but dismal flops.

Yes, I see the problem. Since I'm more in favor of people exploring pure drive-in cinema rather than newer stuff, I'm back in favor of the old pre-1990 rule. There are just too many films from the golden era that would be more interesting. I'm thinking of sticking with pre-1990 for this entire challenge now.

There's been plenty of b-movies and just plain tripe made in the last 20 plus years, too.

Yeah, but a lot of that stuff has migrated to DTV, e.g. all the Van Damme, Seagal and Wesley Snipes action movies that no one but diehard fans have heard of in the last 15 years or so. Every so often there's a real gem there, like Seagal's BELLY OF THE BEAST (2003) directed by HK action master Ching Siu Tung. Or something like D.O.A. DEAD OR ALIVE (2006) with Jaime Pressly and directed by Corey Yuen that would have been a perfect drive-in movie in the '70s but didn't get made till 30 years later.

This

Films like Dear God No! (2011), Time To Kill (2014) and All Hell Breaks Loose (2014) are all examples of 'throwback'/Grindhouse-style films that were made recently. I'll be watching at least 2 of those for the challenge.

I just bought a box set at FYE called "Taboo Tales" (Mill Creek, $4.97), that offers 12 exploitation films from the 1930s through the '50s, including REEFER MADNESS, COCAINE FIENDS, CHAINED FOR LIFE, THE MARIJUANA MENACE, SEX MADNESS, TEST TUBE BABIES, SHE SHOULD'A SAID NO, and THE TERROR OF TINY TOWN.

^That looks like a pretty good set.

She Shoulda Said No-From what I remembered, this felt very much like it was made by one of the big studios.

Cocaine Fiends-"I've got to have dope! I'm a hop-head!"

Test Tube Babies-This probably has the best catfight that I've seen from the roadshow era.

I've got tons of Mill Creek sets to watch from, but I was wondering about shorts too. I remember it being said that the Three Stooges fell squarely in Columbia's B Unit, but I want to know if their shorts are eligible, or just their movies.

Speaking of Mill Creek sets, I can't wait to dig into the Andy Sedaris set they put out for this challenge

When will the list thread be created for this challenge?

Just to be clear, guys...I was only talking about the 3D films and responding to that rule change. Hell, I'll be watching plenty of "newer" exploitation.

I've had this on blu-ray forever and not watched it yet. Could happen for this challenge.

List thread should be about 7 days before the challenge.

I have something similar from Costco that was put out by Alpha Video

This has pictures but they're gigantic, so look here instead.

What is everyone looking forward to watching? Any thoughts of what you'll watch the first day?

I really want to dig into some Reiko Ike & Meiko Kaji films. I don't think I've viewed any for these challenges previously.

I'm not really sure of what I'll start with. Debating between Peplum, Kaiju, or Horror. I have a lot of all those, and there are also horror documentaries.

A couple of 50's/60's sci-fi/horror movies should get me in the mood right away.

I've gone through the checklist and I've already got my mind made up on what to watch for nearly all of them. I've reached a couple dead ends though. I've loved both Eichsploitation picks I've seen in past challenges (Footmen & Burning Hell) is there any more recommendations like those?
The other spot I'm worried about is the Mexican Wrestling check. I've already rented the two "Available" Santo movies from Netflix (Everything else is on "Save" as usual) Youtube's got some, but I've yet to find one that's english-subtitled or dubbed. Any help?

I have some Mill Creek 50 movie sets I keep putting off (2 Mystery/Crime, 2 Comedy) and may start with those, although a couple of 50s SF/Horror films *do* sound good... I've not really looked through the unopened pile to see what might be hiding there...

Can the Distributors/Studios list in the OP be sorted alphabetically like all the others.

I think I'm going to start off with Something Weird films first and then jump around to Blue Underground, martial arts, grindhouse box sets, etc., as I get bored with each.
