Sixth Annual Drive-in/Exploitation/B-movie Challenge April 1-30 2015

Re: Sixth Annual Drive-in/Exploitation/B-movie Challenge April 1-30 2015
I just spent the last week in NYC. The Times Square-42nd Street area is cleaner and safer than it was 30 years ago, but there was a certain grimy fun in the old days.
I started the challenge a bit late with my new Shout Factory Blu of Blacula and Scream, Blacula, Scream. William Marshall lends such tragic gravitas to the role, as if he were in a much better film.

I miss the days when I could walk two blocks from my office and see two movies on a weeknight. Nowadays, my office is further south and the theaters in Manhattan are half-a-mile to a mile away and then you have to take an escalator or elevator and walk down a long corridor to find your theater. Gone are the days when I could just walk into a single screen and find myself in front of the screen just a few yards from the street.
The Criterion in 1990--and, yes, I did see TOTAL RECALL there:
And how that block looks today:

I'm more than a bit jealous of anyone that got to experience THAT 42nd Street. I'm 28 so I'm obviously too young to have experienced it but I love the vibe and the visuals that photos and videos give off from that period. The last bit of that type of thing in Baltimore died a couple years back when our last porn theater The Apex closed and is now some sort of youth ministry building. I was in the middle of planning a trip to the theater and try to get an interview together with the owner if possible but then a few weeks later they had announced it closed pretty much out of nowhere.

Can someone recommend me a good Bruceploitation flick? Preferably one that is on streaming in semi-decent quality?

Now having watched Samurai Princess (2009), I've already watched 2 films during the challenge where a character staples their stomach back together

Don't expect any amazing fights but we had fun laughing at it the first time we watched it. It's public domain so you can find streams of it everywhere.

Just for the record, Roger Corman's birthday is this Sunday, April 5.
And Jackie Chan's birthday is next Tues., April 7.

If I run into it anymore times during the challenge, I'll be sure to point it out!
Finished watching Korean film, The Butcher (2009). The film made me extremely nauseous and I had to take a break. It wasn't the subject matter that got to me but the film style. The entire thing is shot either with handheld or head-mounted cameras, shot entirely POV

This is amazing. One of my fave films from 2014 was Cold in July which has a scene set at a drive-in theatre. They used the classic "Let's All Go to the Lobby" promo which didn't really fit. It should have been some of these with the classic countdown to showtime. Love these.

Would The Guest or Dredd count as a Wildcard for this challenge?

Watching Deathstalker and Deathstalker II, but seeing Lana Clarkson just reminds me of all that Phil Spector unpleasantness.

Is the WILD CARD a freebee for anything or is it used for a film that is kinda on the fence close but not quite trash?

I'm wondering about watching Jesus Christ Superstar for the challenge since it's on the Medved brothers' 1980 list of bad movies, The Golden Turkey Awards.

I'd say Jesus Christ Superstar is ok.
I love that film. Got to see Carl Anderson and Ted Neely live.

I found another Roku channel that has a good selection of eligible movies, Nowhere TV. There is an entire section on there for movies on archive.org. I jus finished an Italian sci fi film called Assignment: Outer Space.

Thank you! I might just watch The Guest then.
I'm aware that they are part of the comics, but the look of The Rippers in Tank Girl (1995) really kill the vibe on that film for me. I realize that Stan Winston did all the FX on that film. Outside how goofy The Rippers look, I really love most of that film.
Also Hard Ticket To Hawaii (1987) will never get old. Everyone needs to shell out $5 (or less) for the Andy Sidaris Collection on DVD.

Yep HTTH was a lot of fun definitely worth watching. There is a rip of it on YouTube if anyone is interested. The theme song will be in my head for weeks.

I go to add the Hard Ticket To Hawaii to my amazon wish list and of course it is in this set:
Is it just me or does this particular set come up a lot on DVDTalk.

You forgot to put "style" in quotes. This movie is practically unwatchable; and until last October, it was the worst movie I had ever seen.

That HTTH disc in that set looks good. The only other release on DVD of that film in the States, I believe came out in 2001. Not sure what the quality was on that release.

Andy Sidaris has been killing it in this challenge for me. Savage Beach (1989) has a 45-second onslaught of awkward sexual innuendos that needs to be seen.
I also love how much Al Leong has been showing up on my list so far.

Since I was wide awake by 6 AM, I decided to start challenge viewing early today. I looked on the Iron Fist Roku Channel, and decided on Hands of Death, a good movie about a couple of Drug Agents, who take out a major opium ring on their own, with deadly results.
