I plan to try and stay up late tonight to start the challenge at 1 AM, and was wondering if anyone else planned the same,

While looking up Batman on Netflix, while I saw the first movie is no longer on there, I saw it's 3 sequels are still there, and all 3 are eligible for the challenge.

Guys, I really like that film: the dark themes of mortality and justice, the pairing of unlike individuals in tensely charged situations, the dynamite supporting turn by Marlene Dietrich. Wait, I'm think about Touch of Evil.
I rewatched the delightful How to Train Your Dragon 2 and was struck by the wonderful world design. Several times, I paused to examine the details such as the bad guy's industrial ships and traps and the bleakly rustic Berk. I will say that the second viewing didn't have quite the emotional impact of the first, but I did get a bit misty eyed a couple of times. The one aspect that of the film I disliked is the relationship between Hiccup and Astrid, a decidedly small part of the film. They feel like two chemistry-less characters forced into a romance because of plot reasons.

I was looking forward to watching my copy of Midway that I got for Christmas. Could have sworn it at least got a nod. No such luck. Looks like it will have to wait for the Historical Appreciation Challenge.

While I won't be awake when the full-fledged challenged begins, I'm excited to dig into my watch pile. Have fun everyone.

I recall debate over the last year or so about including the anti-Oscars (Golden Raspberries) in the eligible-to-watch pile... anyone recall if there was there a conclusion on that...?
(Clearly I'm desperate to watch Batman & Robin.... )

I always go into this a bit unprepared....feel like I'm cramming for an exam right now! Combing through a list of about 200 shorts I have access to to find things I haven't seen before.
Kicking off my personal 2015 Best Picture Screenings....starting with a theatrical screening of "Selma"....thank goodness I have the rest of them at home! I never get out to the theater much at all anymore...
Be sure and post your thoughts and running commentaries here.
These challenge discussions are just as entertaining as the challenge itself!
Have fun, everyone!

Guys, guys, guys...nice try. But I went opening night (20 June 1997) and then went back to see it a second time four days later (24 June), just to bask in how awful it was. And to cement my win here, this back-to-back Batman & Robin was right after back-to-back screenings of Con Air on 6 and 11 June.

Re: The 9th Annual Academy Award Movie Challenge (January 24 - February 22)
So how did folks do on the first day?
I did okay number wise though quality wise is a different story. The Last Command was well made for a 80+ year old silent film (Criterion did a nice job on the restoration). How Green Was My Valley wasn't quite what I was expecting and it's not going to be my favorite John Ford film but it was okay. Even though I am not a fan of Clint Eastwood films, I still watched Thunderbolt and Lightfoot and I wasn't impressed. I can't for the life of me figure out how Jeff Bridges managed a supporting actor nod for that performance. The Chronicles of Narnia really reminded me of Lord of the Rings. Throughout the entire film I kept questioning why the main characters did not seem to have any sense of self-preservation. Different era I suppose.
I'm going to end the night on a quality note by watching Aladdin

I started today's challenge with The Firm. I was a big Grisham fan when this came out (so was Hollywood around this time). Hell of a cast and a pretty good movie. Any time I can watch Hackman on screen is a treat.

I watched "How to Train Your Dragon 2" yesterday for the first time. Nominated for best Animated picture. I haven't seen the others yet, (but hope to at least catch "Boxtrolls" this month) so I can't compare them or say this is the best out of the group, but I did enjoy it. It's a rare film, especially an animated one that can make me tear up and this one did towards the end.

Agreed. Con Air is pure fun from start to finish. I probably need to give it a watch this month.

I was able to watch "Boxtrolls" this afternoon. I did enjoy it somewhat but I don't think it'll be a favorite. I was almost a bit disturbed at how much of a villain they have. I know I'd think twice before showing it to any of my nieces.
Spoiler alert
On the positive side, the visual aspect was great. I love the animation here. I just did a little info gathering about the movie and realized that they are the same company that made "Coraline" and "ParaNorman" and I can see the resemblances. Too bad this one was not as good as those two, though.

Had a blast yesterday unwittingly going for 3 Best Picture nominees/winners over a range of formats and centuries - from a theatrical showing of "Selma" (It's excellent, if you have a chance to see it!), to a Hi-Def streaming of "Whiplash" (also, excellent!), to a good old DVD screening of "The Broadway Melody"!
Have to fit in some shorts today before the SAG Awards tonight and then maybe a quick screening of the new Blu-Ray of "Purple Rose Of Cairo"...thankfully, a nice short Woody Allen classic!

I already have a favorite surprise winner so far, DeMille's Sign of the Cross!
^If only I could run into more of those Pre-Code flicks, I'd be one happy camper for this challenge!

I was depressed today, so I thought a Disney movie would cheer me up. I just finished Lilo & Stitch, and while I don't feel perfect, I feel slightly better now.
