What about adding Animation as a genre? Lots of great toon shows made for TV (Flintstones, Rocky & Bullwinkle et al).

Animation is a medium, rather than a genre, so you can watch any animated shows and count them under whichever genres are appropriate. The Flintstones, for instance, would count as a DomCom. Rocky & Bullwinkle could count for Satire, or for Variety Show.

Yep, makes perfect sense to me!

1 more suggestion:
A "1st Broadcast" option where you watch an episode of a TV series or special that was first shown on that day. 31 days in January, beaucoup amounts of shows.

I just mentioned this challenge in the TV Talk subforum as a way of advertising it, and possibly getting more participants who wouldn't have known about the challenge otherwise.

I've considered all of those - I have 1 (<s>or is it 2?</s> just checked - it's 1) season of Enterprise left to view (It's much better than some would have you believe) and I finally caved and purchased S1 & S2 of TNG a few months back, I've watched a half dozen or so Naked City episodes just to see if I liked it (I do) since it was a blind buy (I was too young to watch it during the original run), plus I have 1 volume of The Untouchables I picked up from BL a couple (or more) years ago sitting here unopened. My problem is every time I go to pick a series I'll think "Oooo... I should save that one for the (fill in the blank for the appropriate theme) challenge" and not watch. Then the appropriate challenge arrives and I watch everything *but* what I held back on with this challenge! There's just not enough time in the day, much less a month, to watch everything I'd like to work in!

Re: TV on DVD* Challenge: The Fifth Season Discussion Thread

The majority of my DVDs are TV sets, so I have a lot to watch. I'm considering working on my BBC nature documentaries, my Dogfights series set, and perhaps some Ancient Aliens, as I have seasons 1-4 of that series. I also have an Ozzie and Harriet dvd set, and Leave it to Beaver, season 4 through Amazon video, plus many cartoons, and action/sci fi series.

I'm certainly in as I'm in the middle of my David Simon viewings: I finished re-watching Homicide: Life on the Street (best show ever) before Thanksgiving and just started re-watching The Wire. I should be ready to start my first viewing of Treme for this challenge. I think Amazon released S2 of Alpha House so that's on the table too.

Excited for this challenge!! I have tons of tv shows I have been waiting to watch for this challenge. To name a few: Fargo Season 1, Firefly Complete Series, Friday Night Lights Seasons 2-5, Hannibal Season 2, Modern Family Season 5, Revolution Season 1, Shameless Season 2-3 (maybe 4 if I buy it), Sons of Anarchy Season 2-6, Spartacus Seasons 2-4, Veronica Mars Season 1-3, The Walking Dead Seasons 3-4!

Not to mention I need to finish Friday Night Lights Season 1, Sleepy Hollow Season 1 and The Walking Dead Season 2! And in case that wasn't enough I have American Horror Story: Freak Show and The Walking Dead Season 5 on DVR! That's not including Netflix or Amazon Prime! UGH so many shows so little time!!

I have the same problem. I always pick specific series as goals for the month of January and then I just get lost in random choices off the shelf, which leads me in different directions, or YouTube discoveries and the like.

I got through S1-3 of Supernatural in October and have been itching to get back to that, so that will probably be the main thing I watch. Along with the non comedy shows that I've been ignoring on my tivo the past few months.

Incidentally, for those who stream: Sony is offering Justified Season Five free right now, in HD. UltraViolet-compliant. I learned about it just now from a Fat Wallet tweet.

In anticipation of the challenge, I've started rewatching some of my BBC Nature documentaries, as I love them, and have no problem watching them again for the challenge.

I'm not seeing a way to watch it/redeem it/buy it/anything. I created a Sony account and linked it to my UV account. Guess I'll just wait and get the DVDs from Netflix. Thanks anyway.

EDIT: I tried Firefox, IE, and Chrome and never got the "buy" or whatever buttons to show for Justified (any season). Guess I missed out on it.

I just bought an Amazon Fire Phone through Amazon and AT&T and it comes with a free year of Prime, so that will help a lot.

I'm excited for this challenge, but I don't have any plans yet. I do have a couple rewatches in progress. This might be the right time to get back to One Tree Hill or True Blood.

I've got so many television box sets in my unwatched pile. However, I've been trying to get rid of some stuff - mostly fat-cutting.

I just want to say that I can't wait for this Challenge to begin. I've been watching a lot of tv lately, and it will be even better when I can watch it as part of a challenge. This is one of my favorite challenges, and my 2nd challenge I ever joined.

Proposed additions to the Tropes section of the checklist:

--- Watch a Sick Episode - Show
--- Watch an episode featuring an Actor Allusion - Show
--- Watch an episode featuring an Evil Twin or Evil Counterpart - Show
--- Watch an episode filmed in front of a live studio audience - Show
--- Watch an episode in which someone Came Back Wrong - Show

Thoughts?

While I don't plan to do the checklist, so this is an opinion of an outsider so to speak, those tropes look like good additions.

I've already started... I just can't get into a Holiday Movie/Program watching mode so I've been catching up on some TVonDVD. Last night I started S6 of Deep Space Nine.

Re: TV on DVD* Challenge: The Fifth Season Discussion Thread

I'm skipping the Holiday Challenge this year; so far, I'm pretty much skipping the whole season, really. A few days ago, I started making my way through Superman: The Animated Series on DVD. I just finished Volume Two this morning, and expect to have Volume Three finished as early as tomorrow. I wasn't a regular watcher when it was on originally, though I caught probably half of it at the time.

I have to confess to being disappointed overall so far. The storytelling just isn't nearly as sophisticated as it was on Batman: The Animated Series. Character is a distant second to action, which consists of a whole lot of throwing into/through buildings, electrocutions, and missiles being diverted into the harbor. There are a few gems on the Volume Two set, but I didn't really love anything on Volume One. I'll have more detailed thoughts once I finish Volume Three. I'll go ahead and post this, though; this is a screen cap from the pop-up trivia track for the episode "A Little Piece of Home":

Things are very stressful for me this year, and as a result, I've not really been able to get into much of a holiday watching mood this year either.
