I agree, however, I mostly stick to giving my opinions on my viewings in the discussion thread. It takes long enough to skim through peoples lists and the discussion thread. That reading reviews in the list thread on top of following the discussion would be too time consuming for me. So I take the easy way out I guess.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 10th Annual October Horror Movie Challenge (Oct 1-31) Pt

Since this was the Tenth Horror Challenge I set out to watch 100 films and I finished with 113. I am glad to have achieved this goal but given the time requirements I doubt I will try it again. I really enjoyed watching the Friday the 13th films followed by Crystal Lake Memories for last year's challenge so this year's challenge it was A Nightmare on Elm Streets films followed by Never Sleep Again. I didn't really watch these films growing up so they were great for FTVs. The Nightmare remake was not included in the Blu-ray set and I steered clear of picking it up given the general opinion that it's shite.

Top FTVs
The Demon Lover/Demon Lover Diary
A trainwreck and documentary of said trainwreck made for a great double bill. Maybe I should had saved this one for the Demented Devil's Night Debauchery theme night.

A Nightmare on Elm Street 4:  The Dream Master
I know most prefer Dream Warriors but I really liked this one. So much fun and Lisa Wilcox was great! I look forward to seeing this film again.

Wes Craven's New Nightmare
I'm glad I did not know much about this film other than the title because it was a wonderful surprise and very well done. Great way to bring it back to the original. The boy standing atop the playground set was terrifying since I'm not a fan of heights. Thankfully the series did not end with Freddy's Dead and we got this gem of a film.

Stepfather
I wanted to watch this film for previous horror challenges but I did not see it listed as horror until this year. Awesome performance by Terry O'Quinn -- especially when he loses it in the basement.

Mr. Sardonicus
The introduction and Punishment Poll kinda takes you out of the film but I really liked this film as a morality tale. Nice comeuppance at the end.

Meh FTVs
The Brotherhood of Satan
Interesting concept but the pace... was... too... slow...

Dead & Buried
Another interesting concept but the film lost its way by the end; nice, sad piano theme though.

Ghostbusters II
Something I noticed as I watched this film for the first time -- I caught parts of it on cable but I was never compelled to watch the whole thing -- was the lack of great one-liners like the first film. "There's always room for Jello" was something a guy said in high school and now I know where he got it from.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
I understand its importance in horror but I was more creeped out than scared watching it. The meathook scene is pretty visceral for a scene that is not necessarily graphic. The Blu-ray has a lot of supplements so I will give them a watch sometime.

Suspiria
This film got interesting at the very end. And then it ended. Oh well.

Bottom FTVs
Dead Ringers
Drugs are bad, mmmkay? Jill Hennessey has been a favorite since Law & Order so seeing her and her twin sister Jacqueline was a plus. It's a shame that they didn't have more screen time.

Freddy's Dead:  The Final Nightmare
A town of weirdos with no children? Tom and Roseanne Barr? Freddy playing a video game? The look of the film reminds me of the '90s and not in a good way. Thankfully the series returned with Wes Craven's New Nightmare.

20 Million Miles to Earth
While I appreciate the Harryhausen creature effects at what point did the love interest between the colonel and Marissa begin? When he called her nurse instead of doctor? When he greeted her as, "Almost a doctor?" Women always like jerks...

Class of Nuke 'Em High
A mess, which is to be expected since it's Troma, but I had hoped for a bit more.

Witchfinder General
'70s torture porn. Ugh.

Honorable mentions
I watched the Vincent Price Collection and I enjoyed the films save for Witchfinder General. I recall seeing parts of The Pit and Pendulum as a kid because of the pendulum blade and the fascination/horror of being sawed in half by such a contraption. Hopefully the second Price collection price drops a bit and I will get that too.

Favorite rewatches
Ginger Snaps
Awesome film, it looks great on Blu-ray, and I am looking forward to digging into the extras on the disc.

From Beyond
I saw this on video during high school:  it was bonkers then and it's bonkers now. Gotta love the progression of Barbara Crampton's character from bespectacled academic to S&M leather vamp.

Captain Kronos - Vampire Hunter
My love for this film has only grown stronger over the years and I always look forward to watching it for the horror challenge. I acquired the wonderful score by Laurie Johnson on CD which included liner notes from Caroline 'Carla' Munro circa August 2007.
I can only say that working on Kronos was one of my happiest work projects. I went to work with a smile and a little mud on my face everyday. When I say mud, it was the easiest make-up I have ever had to wear in any film I have been involved with. Lovely Eddie the make-up man would gently rub fresh mud on my face, hands and feet during the five and half week shoot, a little mascara and I was away. I also remember having a very special hair conditioner applied by means of raw eggs and tomatoes in the scene where "I dance on a Sunday". The fantastic crew took delight in pelting me with the aforementioned items. It made my long hair shine beautifully. I fully recommend it, ladies! It all added to the effect and genuine look of the film.

We had an amazing director, my good friend, Brian Clemens, who took a chance on me playing his female lead, Carla the Gypsy. I loved the role! Carla was very pure of spirit who wore her heart on her sleeve, when it came to the dashingly handsome hero "Kronos", played superbly by German actor Horst Jansen. His side-kick, Grost, was played brilliantly by the extraordinary character actor John Cater, who still works non-stop on television today. As I said before, Kronos was of my favourite films I had the great privilege to be in and, since its release in 1973, has become a genre film classic so much so that it one of Quentin Tarantino's favourites. You may notice he pays homage in several of his films, especially KILL BILL -- Kronos means time traveler in Greek and if I had my time over, and good few years younger, I would ride the Garlic trail with Kronos and Grost anytime.
Twenty years later I finally read Frankenstein, a book assigned for a college lit class but did not read until now. The monster's plea for acceptance by humanity and enmity for his creator made for an intriguing story. One does wonder how an eight foot tall being can remain inconspicuous for so long.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 10th Annual October Horror Movie Challenge (Oct 1-31) Pt

Been on a work trip in the outback since Sunday (with no wifi or reception for most of it), so just skimmed the last few pages; congrats to SterlingBen on the prize!

And thanks to indiephantom for the nice words on my list Every time Surfinhank does something cool, I'm tempted to do something the next year, but I just don't have the time (or creativity). I just write little comments to remind myself when I look back on it, but nice to see other people getting some use out of it too.

I should've added a note to say there are some mild spoilers and lots of gore and nudity I got into such a habit making notes for scenes that when I went back to watch normal films again this month, I kept reaching for my notepad. Haven't had time to watch your vid yet, as I literally got off the plane an hour ago and am about to go to bed, but something to look forward to in the morning.

Hey all..

Sorry for not updating my list at all and not participating in the discussions.
I really don"t know what happened to me this year..
I mean, I was all jacked and hype with a good batch of movies to watch but seems I was to busy to watch anything or yet check this page out daily..
I did watch a few but my numbers are poor, the worse ever..going to work on my list now and probably be done pretty fast lol.

With that said...

I kept up with the tradition and manage to meet up w/ a horror person(s) for the month of October , The Soska Sisters ..
I also did alot of theater this month, 4x..wow that's the most I ever done in a month..

Went to see, what was discuss here:

Mas Negro Que La Noche: Darker than night

The Abc's of Death 2

Wrong Turn 6, free screening thanks to fangoria

&

Saw 10th Anniversary ..

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 10th Annual October Horror Movie Challenge (Oct 1-31) Pt

You know, I try to check in on participants' lists during the month and see what people are watching. It's great when people write something up about a movie, but some folks use such a small font that it's impossible to read what they've typed. I understand why it's done, but it doesn't really encourage people to stop and take a look at your list.

I will try to write something up about the movies I've seen, but some horror movies have been written to death (no pun intended). Do I really have anything new to contribute to the already exhaustive discussion of Night of the Living Dead? Then there are those movies that fail to elicit any sort of strong reaction, positive or negative. They're just these things that I saw. Finally, there are those films that I have more complex reactions upon viewing, and I find it difficult to put those impressions in words. I'm still trying to figure out exactly how I feel about House (1977). I may not have something written about everything that I saw in October, but I hope what I do have written is at least entertaining and/or insightful.

This.

I think it was indiephantom who said he saves all of his horror-viewing for October and I've started to do the same (As well) for the past few years. Therefore, I'm just eager to do nothing but pile up my movie-viewing when that time comes. Only when I've gone through an exhaustive day with 5-or-more viewings is when I take time off to check out participants' lists. I seem to only read their reviews if it's for a (Mostly obscure) movie that I liked/disliked---Just to see their take on it.

I've said it before, I barely glance at any list other than my own during October (I sometimes see the ones on the same page as mine, if it can't be helped). Then, in November, after my list is completed, or as complete as it's going to be, I'll go through and look at the others.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 10th Annual October Horror Movie Challenge (Oct 1-31) Pt

Mondo Kane, I certainly take advantage of October in terms of what I stock pile. I still do watch lots of horror throughout the year, though. But if it's September and getting closer to the challenge, I usually cut out the horror and reserve it for possible themes/subsets.

I agree with some of the comments made about lists being time consuming along with the discussion threads. I participated in a few discussions, but I think that those threads aren't that busy or engaging. It's one reason I didn't bother trying to complete subsets this year. I've usually seen most of them already and too many films are obvious picks that have been dissected enough. I like the subset choices that were sleepers or more offbeat in terms of discussion. But I agree that contributing to those threads along with your reviews is too much.

The small font are okay with me. I don't use them for text, personally. But I think the guys are just trying to take up less space in the thread. If I'm interested in the content, I'll check them out.

Mondo & DaveyJoe; it's so weird how different all our videos are It's fun seeing some of the same movies I watched and which scenes we all chose. Also Mondo, what films are at 2.34 and 4.02?

Also, I forgot to mention that one of the places I stayed at during my work trip was not far from Wolf Creek D:

Damn cool music you post. And I'm jealous how you seem to use the actual film-negatives for these clips in your vids Seriously, I've never seen Curtains and Funhouse look that clear before.

Yikes on the Wolf Creek comment!

Yeah, they're very different in style. I enjoyed seeing both of you take a completely different approach with your videos, and I was also a little surprised to see the occasional nudity in your vid.

There wasn't much overlap, but I did end up removing a shot from A Bucket of Blood after I saw it in Mondo's video. I set rules for my montage and try to follow a rigid structure, so I liked how your videos were a bit looser, I'm not sure if that makes sense. I'm glad you guys participated, maybe we'll get a few more next year!

This year it was really important to me to have a higher quality picture than last year. I'm totally OCD when it comes to editing, and it was a bit of a pain hunting down HD versions of all of the movies, I had some annoying software issues as well this year that really slowed me down. It's a great time to be a home video enthusiast as companies like Synapse, Criterion, Scream Factory, and Blue Underground are putting out great releases of catalog horror films. I ended buying a few of my favorite FTVs and even a couple of blind buys that I will set aside for next year's Challenge. I thought for the most part my video turned out looking great, but what's funny is that I was disappointed to discover that once the video was on Youtube, their compression basically eliminated the film grain that I loved seeing all month. I'm never satisfied!

I think I'm going to rewatch both of your videos tonight when I get home, I'm sad that the challenge is over.

My rules were: see a cool shot, write it down (regardless of nudity ). Some films I got to the end and hadn't written down a single time, and just had to grab something, but mostly I didn't have a difficult time finding something cool. I also was on a strict 4-5 second clip rule, but I stretched it to 6 seconds for a couple of them.

I think I'm a day late, but my list is officially complete. My table didn't come out like it was supposed to, but otherwise, you can still see my comparisons to other challenges. The number of DVDs that I watch during October continues to shrink. It's weird seeing how little I use that format now.

Sad to see that the challenge is over, but I suppose it's good to be back to reality. Now I'm having to play major catch up on my DVR. Once that happens, I'll probably have to get my DVR replaced because I continue to have equipment failures with it. Ugh.

Likewise, and I echo Julie Walker and Mondo Kane's comments, too.

My assumption is always that the lists are first-and-foremost for the individual compiling them, so for me there's also a slight element of feeling like I'm an unwanted observer peering over someone's shoulder...!
