Interesting films tonight.

Tested the waters of some Mexican horror with The Brainiac (aka "The Terror of the Baron"). I wouldn't say it's "the most bizarre horror film ever made" as the DVD implied, but pretty out there. The inflating/deflating Halloween mask and dollar store effects were a hoot. I'm definitely looking forward to diving into more of my unopened CasaNega titles.

Then it was into nunsploitation territory with The Other Hell. The pacing was a little grinding on the nerves, although actually somewhat fast-paced considering it was a Bruno Mattei flick, and surprisingly little nudity (a visibly breathing topless corpse). The man is apparently capable of showing a little restraint, although not so much with the animal killing. As usual, there were recycled ideas, and even a recycled Goblin score from The Beyond. Overall it wasn't as bad as expected.

Question about the subset list. Both Barbara Crampton and Carolyn Purdy-Gordon are in Re-Animator. Are we allowed one movie per person or can we claim one film for as many names on the list that they are in?

The American remake. I have not yet seen the Mexican original.

I might check that one out. I've seen the original. It was pretty good, sort of a slow burn, like you said. I'm curious about the remake.

One of the funnest things for me with challenges before was picking out a big name movie my wife had never seen and showing it to her for the first time. Stuff like Jaws or the Texas Chainsaw movies. Now that she's passed, I wasn't sure how to make that first movie something special still. But luckily my son only recently has gotten old enough to actually pay attention to films and care about seeing them so now I can plan around for him. I got to show him Monster Squad for the first time and it was really nice to share that with him. And I always forget how damn well made that movie is.

I'm also finding this to be one of the first years where a full time job and other responsibilities are really cramping the output. By now, I would be 8-14 movies deep already in past years instead of the current three.

That's what I meant, thanks! I got to start asking for recommendations for movies off the checklist too. Watching Mutants for Michael Ironside and it's just a waste of time and energy. Production quality is like a Showtime or Cinemax soft core porno. Trying to find movies off of Netflix for some of these people does get some awful results. Or some of these suggestions of names are just outright awful. Not sure which one.

I enjoyed the 2010 original. I might check out the remake just for Michael Parks.

Re-watched The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986) for the millionth time. I love the first hour of the film but that last 30+ minutes drags so much ass.

My work schedule is packed through Saturday. So it'll be tough to get some viewings in at the moment. But I will try to watch at least one movie before then,fingers crossed.

I thought I'd share a short werewolf comedy I helped a friend make this past summer, since it's October and all. It was a lot of fun to make. I'm currently working on editing my latest film as well and hope to have it complete this month.

This morning I had surgery to have a chalazion removed from my eyelid and ended up sleeping most of the day. One of my friends can over after she got out of church and we watched The Exorcist. I'm glad I didn't watch it before going for surgery since the film derives quite a bit of suspense from the increasingly invasive medical procedures. I'm also glad that a friend watched it with me - though she loses friend points for immediately leaving me alone in my dark apartment.

Afterward, I rewatched The Invisible Man. While it's not my favorite Universal monster film, I enjoy it, and the effects leave me in awe. Claude Rains is excellent as the titular character; Gloria Stuart is glamorous as the romantic interest; Una O'Connor is hysterical, hilarious, and oh-so-annoying.

Came close to accidentally using my wildcard tonight with Noriko's Dinner Table. Though it's related to Suicide Club and is labeled with "Horror" keywords at imdb, I really didn't spot much horror here. But I'll go with what imdb says.

Yeah, that made the list in my "Most Disappointing" awards in a past challenge. Mostly due to that tagline. At least there were other CasaNegra titles I saw that didn't disappoint (i.e, La maldición de la Llorona aka "Curse of the Crying Woman") I wish that line could've dished out some more movies.

I'm a sucker for those movies that have more than one animal-species on the attack. The only others I know of are Beast with a Million Eyes and Frogs. Anyone know of any others?

I call shenanigans! The movie The Meateater 1979 is on the list for Kitchen horror and it is decidedly not kitchen related. Or good for that matter. (yet somehow I own it...)

I forgot how much I liked Slaughter High (1986). I can even forgive that part of the final act that looks like a bad 80s music video.

The Carrier seems interesting, but in the first couple of minutes of the film the narrator clearly refers to the story as taking place in the Fall. Today's theme is Summer-related horror, and since I'm probably only going to be able to get one title in today, I think I'm going with an alternate pick. Anyone else notice this?

I imagine the only limit might be that if you watch films by both people on a checklist line it only counts as one check. Right?
Uh oh. I'm relying on the subset films to satisfy the theme night 'requirement'. I'll have to plan my evening's viewing to make sure it's covered.

I watched Bloody Pit Of Horror (1965) last night and while it is a terrible movie, there is a spider/spider web scene that is so hilarious it makes watching the movie worth it.

For those of you who don't wish to suffer thru the entire movie, here is the clip. From the beginning of this video and lasts about 6 and a half minutes.

Today was a mixed bag. Nothing great so far, but some decent flicks today.

The OK: Don't Deliver Us From Evil was a strangely entertaining film, though a bit montage like (as opposed to Heavenly Creatures - based on the same 'story' - which feels more like a complete film). The House on Sorority Row was watchable but I'm not really sure why - the twists at the end made no sense and there was no real conclusion, the kills were pretty pathetic as well. Sleepless started off slow because I couldn't work out what the hell was going on, but as the story revealed itself and the kills started getting cooler, I started enjoying it more.

The bad: Don't Go Into the Woods had no plot whatsoever. People just wandered into the woods and a crazy man killed them. Why? Don't know. Who was he? Don't know. Who were the people getting killed? Don't know. Didn't care either. Spiders was horribly cliche and so 90s it hurt. Every line was a cliche, the whole thing was just a generic and ridiculously stupid sci-fi horror thingy. But it was so bad that it sort of funny.

I'm going to have to look at what I watched--I think my version has both. I know I watched two different endings but maybe that was just a bonus scene or something.

I watched Final Exam last night....it is totally unremarkable (and really not very good) in every single way except one: it is SO 80s. Hell, I had to check the case for the date, and it says 1981, so it's early, but MAN....there's bad clothes and typewriters and turntables and geeks and jocks and commodore 64s (I think it was a 64, it was something like that) just ALL over the place. Oh AND it's Southern fried, with some real good ol'boy characters. AND some genuinely funny lines.

I read the above again and feel compelled to say again, it's NOT good--but if you need some 80s cheese, good pick.

I was considering picking up The Haunted History of Halloween History Channel special on Amazon to watch this month, but found out I didn't need to. For this whole month it is one of the unlocked shows on the History Channel App on Roku, which is good for me, as Dish isn't one of the authorized providers. So I started today with an annual tradition, just one I normally wait to air on TV.
