Re: The 10th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31) ***The List Threa

My Second Horror Challenge
*= first time watching
Counting Method: 2 hours of Television Content = 1 item

My goal is 31 .

Potential List:
I would like to finish off some horror franchises I've seen most of and some other random picks.

Children of the Corn III: Urban Harvest
Children of the Corn: Genesis
Children of the Corn: Revelation
Dance of the Dead
Drive Thru
Evil Dead X Gave Up On
Paranormal Activity 3
Paranormal Activity 4
Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones
The Conjuring
The Purge
Wrong Turn
Zombie Strippers

September 30
.5. Sleepy Hollow - Ep. 2.1 "This is War"*
1.5. My Little Eye (2002)*
Eh, not the most dynamic film. It says something that I didn't care that most of the people got killed and was disappointed it didn't happen sooner.
Body Count - 5

October 1
2. The Strain - Ep. 1.12 "Last Rites"*
2.5. Supernatural - Ep. 9.19 "Alex Annie Alexis Ann"*
3. Sleepy Hollow - Ep. 2.2 "The Kindred"*

October 2
4. Blood Night: The Legend of Mary Hatchet (2009)*
Gave whole new meaning to PMS.
Body Count - 29
5. The Haunting in Connecticut 2: Ghosts of Georgia (2013)*
Very creepy and also some of the worst parenting on film.
Body Count - 1

October 3
6. Dance of the Dead (2008)*
Lots of fun. Music soothes the savage beast.
Body Count - 10

October 5
7. The Purge (2013)*
Odd but really intriguing. I liked it a lot more than I thought I would.
Body Count - 11

October 6
8. Wrong Turn (2003)*
Just reaffirmed one of the reasons why I'm not a nature person. Stay off Bear Mountain Road!
Body Count - 10

October 7
9. My Soul to Take (2010)*
The condor bit in class was cool. Otherwise this was just eh.
Body Count - 13

October 8
10. Vacancy (2007)*
This is why we stay on the highway and do not stay at no-name hotels.
Body Count - 4

October 9
11. Shredder (2003)*
Snowboarding is very dangerous. DJ's boyfriend from Full House can attest to this. Some bad acting and some really bad special effects. So bad it was enjoyable.
Body Count - 11
12. Children of the Corn III: Urban Harvest (1995)*
One of the better CotC movies though the special effects were dreadful. Interesting to see some of the Gatlin kids living in a big city. Plants are evil.
Body Count - 19

October 12
12.5 The Walking Dead - Ep. 5.1 "No Sanctuary"*

October 13
13. The Strain - Ep. 1.13 "The Master"*
14. Wind Chill (2007)*
This seemed very much like a made for TV movie. Not very scary and kinda depressing.
Body Count - 2

October 15
15. Children of the Corn (2009)*
Evil children and a Vietnam vet with PTSD. I definitely preferred the original.
Body Count - 8

October 16
15.5. Supernatural - "A Very Special Supernatural Special"*

October 19
16. The Walking Dead - Ep. 5.2 "Strangers"*

October 21
16.5. True Blood - Ep. 7.7 "May Be the Last Time"*

October 22
17. True Blood - Ep. 7.8 "Almost Home"*
18. Warm Bodies (2013)*
Quirky, funny and sweet. I like the alternate take on zombies.
Body Count - 9
18.5. Supernatural - Ep. 10.3 "Soul Survivor"*

October 23
19. The Vampire Diaries - Ep. 6.1 "I'll Remember"*

October 25
20. Zombie Strippers (2008)*
So odd, so funny and very entertaining. Totally unique.
Body Count - 34

October 26
20.5. The Walking Dead - Ep. 5.3 "Four Walls and a Roof"*
21. True Blood - Ep. 7.9 "Love is to Die"*

October 27
21.5. True Blood - Ep. 7.10 "Thank You"*
22. The Vampire Diaries - Ep. 6.2 "Yellow Ledbetter"*
23. Zombie Night (2013)*
An ok zombie movie. My favorite part was the zombie eating the cell phone. This will go down in history as one of my favorite movie moments. I've also learned that green houses do not make great places to hide from zombies.
Body Count - 12

October 28
23.5. Supernatural - Ep. 10.1 "Black"*
24. Supernatural - Ep. 10.2 "Reichenbach"*
25. The Conjuring (2013)*
Very creepy. I loved that this was based on a true story and am fascinated by the Warrens now. Definitely a favorite.
Body Count - 0
25.5. The Vampire Diaries - Ep. 6.3 "Welcome to Paradise"*
26. The Vampire Diaries - Ep. 6.4 "Black Hole Sun"*

October 29
27. Children of the Corn: Genesis (2011)*
PTSD again. CotC movies seem to like that lately. A stupid couple but I liked the girls shoes.
Body Count - 6
28. Annabelle (2014)*
A very creepy doll, a good story line and an all around enjoyable movie.
Body Count - 5
29. A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010)*
I missed Robert Englund as Freddie and kept thinking "Hey that's Beaver from Veronica Mars!" but for a remake of one of my all-time favs it wasn't bad. Definitely the best horror remake I've seen.
Body Count - 5

October 30
29.5 Supernatural - Ep. 10.4 "Paper Moon"*
30. The Vampire Diaries - Ep. 6.5 "The World Has Turned and Left Me Here"*

October 31 - Happy Halloween!
31. Children of the Corn: Revelation (2001)*
Another soldier with PTSD (though a minor character this time.) It's good to see that even ghosty, evil children can't resist the call of video games. If you're ever fighting a horde of evil children make sure you have your phone and a lighter. The last scene in the lobby reminded me of the Farmville 2 commercials. And with this movie I'm done with all the CotC movies.
Body Count - 6
32. Insidious (2010)*
So, so creepy! It was also really tense and nerve wracking. I've discovered I really like Patrick Wilson.
Body Count - 1
33. Scream 4 (2011)*
So much fun. I love all the twists and turns and the humor, of course. I love this series and this was a great "sequel".
Body Count - 14
34. Paranormal Activity 3 (2011)*
Creepy, though not as good as the first two. The mom was stupid and annoyed me. I love that it was set in the 80's - My era!
Body Count - 2
35. Paranormal Activity 4 (2012)*
Evil kids are always creepy. The mom was stupid in this installment too. I thought how they worked a lot of the filming in (via video chat, her setting up computers to record around the house, ect.) was really smart. I liked the connection to the first movie too.
Body Count - 4

Re: The 10th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31) ***The List Threa

Ok, and here we go. * first time viewing

Sept. 30

1.) Dawn of the Dead (2004)
2.) Found (2012)* - incredibly sick, but I loved it
3.) The Hollow (2004)

Oct. 1

4.) Stalled (2013)* - good for one time viewing
5.) The Prowler (1981)
6.) Alien (1979)

Oct. 2

7.) The Carrier (1988)*
8.) Friday the 13th (1980)
9.) Hazmat (2013)*

Oct. 3

10.) Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987)
11.) Psycho (1960)
12.) Leprechaun: Origins (2014)* - didn't care for this for whatever reason. Never should have claimed to be a part of the franchise

Oct. 4

13.) Frankenstein (1931)
14.) Club Dread (1987)
15.) Annabelle (2014) *- Best recently released horror film that I've seen in quite some time. 7.5 / 10

Oct. 5

16.) Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives (1986)
17.) Jason X (2001)
18.) Night of the Creeps (1986)

Oct. 6

19.) Horror of Party Beach (1964)
20.) Jason Goes to Hell
21.) Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan
22.) Horns (2013)* - Not the greatest work Aja has done, but not his worst either. CGI in this is not the greatest either which definitely lowers the grade on this one. As predictable as it is I liked the storyline, and loved the twist which brings a lot of the story full circle.

Re: The 10th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31) ***The List Threa

I'm in. This is my absolute favorite challenge of the year and have eagerly waited/anticipated it for the past three years. I wish I had known that August was Criterion challenge month, but this is great!

BTW, can someone make a list with which movies (mostly from the recommendations already listed) could be found either on Amazon Instant or Netflix Instant? That would be incredibly helpful.

Re: The 10th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31) ***The List Threa

i was too late for the Criterion challenge and started a few days early at 1930.
trying to watch at least one film per year from 1930.

30th
01 Sexton Blake and the Hooded Terror* 1938 George King unknown UK ***
wildcard 1 - starred Tod Slaughter, but not listed as horror
1st
02 Charlie Chan in Honolulu* 1938 H Bruce Humberstone Fox US ***
03 Son of Frankenstein* 1939 Rowland V Lee Universal US ***
04 Charlie Chan at Treasure Island* 1939 Norman Foster Fox US ***
05 The Cat and the Canary 1939 Elliott Nugent Paramount US ***
06 The Human Monster* 1939 Walter Summer Monogram UK ***
07 The Devil's Daughter* 1939 Arthur H Leonard Sack Amusements US *
2nd
08 You'll Find Out* 1940 David Butler RKO US ***
09 The Ape* 1940 William Nigh Monogram US **
TV edit.
00s The Haunted Mouse* 1941 Tex Avery WB US ***

4th
13 Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man* 1943 Roy William Neill Universal US **

00s Hair-Raising Hare 1946 Chuck Jones WB US *****
20 The Flying Serpent* 1946 Sam Newfield PRC US **
00s Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Mouse 1947 Hanna & Barbera MGM US ****
according to IMDb a WWII doc is a horror (and i won't argue that), but a parody of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde isn't - it isn't even listed as a fantasy or sci-fi. All Movie just lists this as "Animated".
00s Invisible Mouse 1947 Hanna & Barbera MGM US ***
00s The Stupidstitious Cat* 1947 Seymour Kneitel Paramount US ***
21 The Inheritance* 1947 Charles Frank Fine Arts Films UK *
00s Satan and the Virgin* 1948 unknown unknown US **
in 1958 there are 186 horrors listed, in 1948 this creepy stag? video is one of 11.
2013 has 5,218 listed.

there is no feathered serpent in this film
23 Unknown Island* 1948 Jack Bernhard Film Classics US *

25 Lights Out* 1949-1952 Herbert B Swope Jr NBC US
Passage Beyond / Dark Image / I Spy / Strange Legacy
8th
26 Lights Out* 1949-1952 Herbert B Swope Jr NBC US
Curtain Call / Jasper / The Deal / Martian Eyes
love to see a remake of Martian Eyes; Jasper wasn't that bad - every series needs a musical episode.
27 Lights Out* 1949-1952 Herbert B Swope Jr NBC US
Just What Happened / Angry Birds / And Adam Begot / Cat's Cradle
28 The Thing from Another World 1951 Christian Nyby RKO US ****
29 Tales of Tomorrow* 1951 George F Foley Jr ABC US *
Verdict from Space / Blunder / The Dark Angel / Frankenstein
Frankenstein was sub-PRC, The Dark Angel was an anti-mutant propaganda film, the other two were anti-science.
00s Trick or Treat* 1952 Jack Hannah RKO US ****
9th
30 Bela Lugosi Meets a Brooklyn Gorilla* 1952 William Beaudine Realart US *

Re: The 10th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31) ***The List Threa

OK, here goes. I've lost count of the number of these challenges that I've started and not completed, but I'll try again with this one. My aim is not to get to 100, I have zero chance of achieving that. My aim is to keep this list updated through the month, no matter how few or how many I watch!

1 October 2014

1. Dracula (1931) - 10/10. I love this movie, I've seen it so many times but I need to make it part of my October-lead-up-to-Halloween routine!
2. The Hearse (1980) - 3/10. Dull.

2 October 2014

3. The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971) - 4/10. Camp. Not as dull as The Hearse but not exactly thrilling. Quote from the wife: "this film makes no sense."

4 October 2014

4. Ghost Town (1988) 3.5/10
5. Dark Shadows episodes 416-419

5 October 2014

6. Dracula's Daughter (1936)
7. Son Of Dracula (1943)
also episodes 420-421 of Dark Shadows

6 October 2014
8. Video Nasties: Moral Panic, Censorship & Violence (2010)
9. Frankenstein (1941) 10/10 - another brilliant horror film that I am going to make part of my regular October routine.

At current rate I might make a total of 50 by the end of the month which I will be very impressed by!

Re: The 10th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31) ***The List Threa

I am back for another year of horror movie watching. I don't know how many movies I will get in, but I will try to get at least 30 this month.

From my 2012 horror challenge introduction:

I remember very vividly being frightened in the dark, cavernous Keswick Theater in the summer of 1979. For whatever reason, I accompanied my mother to a showing of Ridley Scott's Alien that day; I was a little too young for such a movie. This event kept me from being interested in the horror genre for over twenty years. With few exceptions, I skipped the genre for decades. I look upon the Horror Challenge each year as a chance to fill in some of the gaps in horror film watching.
The Keswick Theater was a throwback. Here is a picture of the place and some history. Even in the late 70s, there weren't many large theaters like this left. The only one I remember was the Sameric in downtown Philadelphia. The lobby area actually had windows into the theater area, so I guess you could walk out and still see what was on the screen. You would see mothers with kids on their shoulders out there, or perhaps a couple of people talking softly and smoking. Most of these old theaters had been closed, chopped down into Twins, or turned into something else. The Keswick was closed soon after I saw Alien in the theater. I have a pretty good memory and I remember seeing Airport '76 and the PG version of Saturday Night Fever there. I also remember years later seeing a concert there, the Cocteau Twins with Mazzy Star opening for them.

Each year as a film lover, I return to this challenge looking to deepen my appreciation for film overall and the horror genre specifically. The art and craft of film making, visual storytelling, and cinema is a passion of mine. To have looked away from this corner of movie making for so long, I feel remiss. I look forward to another year of new discoveries and finding the new in the known.

October 1st
001. Cabin in the Woods [2012] imdb blu-ray Joss Whedon's and Drew Goddard's cliche aware modern horror tale explodes to epic proportions. The movie progresses in acts, each revealing a larger and larger stage to the horror unfolding. Act one opens to some kids in the woods and in Westworld/Disneyland style underpark, there's engineers, chemists, and staff manipulating the topside events. You are immediately aware that this is more than just some mindless slasher/monster/merman killing kids at a remote upstate lakeside cabin. There is a large infrastructure behind the machinations at work here. This movie performs a classic three-act progression. Each of the acts of the film widen the scope, danger, and stage of the story. And as the first act closes and the first peel is pulled away, you feel for the kids but it doesn't feel like a horror movie. It feels more like an snarky and wry thriller with horror elements. Then the movie plunges, almost literally, down the rabbit hole. Act two ends with the characters in the bowels of underhorror, doing more damage than imaginable. It turns into a monsterfest of colossal proportions. And then, when you think it is winding down to last survivors stepping out to a new dawn. Bam! Act three has more tricks up it's sleeve. It turns into a tale of elder horrors... and ultimately, the world is on the brink.

October 3rd
002. Open Grave [2013] NEW! imdb Cable/DVR This is an interesting take on the epidemic horror not unlike the Walking Dead. There's clearly zombies and all sorts of classic horror tropes at work here, but the drama takes place with the survivors. Unlike the Walking Dead, the conflict and tension among the living overshadow the threat from the zombies. This is a nice change of pace. But the story as ultimately revealed seems ho-hum given this now well-heeled genre.
003. Eye See You [2002] NEW! imdb Cable/DVR I guess there is something to learned from even a horrible movie, because this one has some nice simple touches that drive tension. Isolation in a remote place always helps with these movies. A consistent wardrobe because everyone is the same cold weather gear, also very nice at creating tension and keeping the threads of doubt going. You also see that having too many characters makes the juggling act of tracking all these people challenging. Still, this clunker manages to keep it together and play out quickly to an ending that doesn't produce an audible groan from me, but just barely.

October 4th
004. Oculus [2013] NEW! imdb DVD The first new movie I've watched this year that I would like to revisit. I remember this movie getting decent critical reviews when it was released in theaters. This one deserves them as it takes a particular trope of these supernatural thrillers and turns it into the pivotal element/power of the malign force here. Taking this not heavily exploited supernatural trait/haunting detail and expanding it and making the most out of it really pays off because it smartly used, deftly played well throughout the script. The writers manage to wring an amazing amount of thrills and tension from it, and the editing and performances from the actors play along nicely. I can see a sequel down the line somewhere that doesn't work nearly as well.
005. Wallace and Grommit: Curse of the Were Rabbit [2005] imdb DVD I watch this one every year. Academy-award winning animated film that rewards me with new details and humor with each additional viewing.

October 7th
006. Cabin Fever: Patient Zero [2013] NEW! imdb Netflix The first movie in this series was a well-crafted cabin on the lake horror. The second and now this one are disappointments set in the same world. It is interesting to see the world created in these films revisited, even if it is in this crappy low-budget yawner. Those elements necessary to support the imaginary world of this movie's universe propped up to continue the larger story.

October 8th
007. Final Destination [2000] imdb Cable Hubris is a classic fault of mankind. One well-heeled in classic Greek tragedy. Leave it to Glen Morgan from X-Files to recast this classic theme for a modern horror classic. You can see why this movie is the basis for a franchise. The premise is simple. Cheat death once and it will still have it's day with you. It is repeatable, and the way in which this story is told with dramatic dangerous "worst case" coincidences of our modern technological age, it makes for good visual storytelling and thrilling set-pieces.

October 10th
008. Val Lewton: Man in the Shadows [2007] NEW! imdb DVD When you watch a really good movie you begin a relationship with the filmmakers. Today this is often the director or the writer. Back in the 1940s, it was the Producer who was the creator of what your were seeing oftentimes. Val Lewton created a number of exceptional mood horror films in the 1940s. Well ahead of their time, these movies contains the heart and soul of the man behind them. It is great to get this perspective on him before I embark on re-watching a number of his films and watching some for the first time.

October 17th
009. Let the Right One In [2008] imdb Cable/DVR Vampire stories are an incredibly well-worn staple of the horror genre. That there is any new life in telling stories of about bloodsuckers is amazing because the material is so well covered. This Swedish film, which spawned a US remake, is exceptional in it's handling of the material. The movie comes alive in the interactions between the characters. It vividly shows the day to day horror of the life of people here -- both the young girl vampire feeding and the terrible bullies the young boy must face. It is much more than that, too. In inhabits the day to day of life in which vampires would might exist. It shows the lives of the victims as they come to their ends, brutally or explosively. It shows the rules of vampires, the myths of them, at key moments of connection between the characters. The deft direction and strong screenplay makes everything, every terrible act and result understandable. And it is in this way that we understand how the characters ultimately fit together. It is easy to understand how the young boy, bullied and put-on, could understand the plight of the vampire. She's been put in a place where she must be this way. Much like her, he's been pushed into a corner. He did what he had to do. He knows she has to do what she has to do. It's the way they are. As viewers we see into these souls and know it as well.
010. Halloween [1978] imdb Blu-ray It seems like this movie is the first one to put together all the modern unkiller slasher cliches together in one film. Carpenter's ear;y feature is a tour-de-force of independent movie making and the horror genre at the same time. This movie cemented his career for decades and launched an entire subgenre of horror films.
011. The Mummy [1999] imdb HD DVD I am a big fan of action horror movies. They aren't actually scary. Perhaps this why I enjoy them so much. I get close to the genre and don't actually have any potential for fear. They usually feature a creature/monster and action movie tropes. Stephen Sommers performed a masterstroke with this light-hearted retelling of the classic mummy story told with summer blockbuster effects of the time. I don't think he was anywhere near as successful with any other outing.

October 18th
012. Cat People [1942] imdb DVD Val Lewton's most well-known movie, Cat People, is timeless. Oftentimes movies from 72 years ago feel wrong; the characters act with different motivations, the events unfold to different results than they would today. Cat People feels like a movie from last week in terms of how the characters behave and what they say and do. The story is not unusual. Oliver bumps into the young and beautiful Irena and is smitten. He falls and love and marries her quickly. For a time, everything is perfect. But the wonder of Irena turns to troubles and friction. The young couple pulls together they commit to making things right. It is here we first find out about Irena's history. Her mother was called a Cat Person. She is stopped by a woman and called a sister, from a fellow Cat Person. The caged panther is pacing back and forth in her. When her marriage is threatened, the panther is loosed. What makes this movie so good, is how it tells you the story in a way that isn't just about this couple, this situation. Irena is a person with a problem. That it is a primal cat is a wonderful metaphor for anything we strain against. The imagery of the panther pacing back and forth in the park cage is a beautiful cinematic portrayal of something lurking under the surface. How it plays out builds to a wonderful tension. The young husband retreating, Irena descending into and ultimately giving herself to this inner demon. It is in many ways more real than you would see in a movie today.
013. Siren [2010] NEW! imdb Cable/On Demand Sirens are mythic, dangerous, and powerful. Their power lies in their beautiful song that can't be resisted. The original sirens from the Odyssey are updated in this plodding B-horror. Three friends end up on a small uncharted isle off the Greek coast when they see a flash of light. They find a madman and a lovely woman as the only inhabitants. The movies falls to pieces quickly. The siren here fills the minds of it's victims with phantoms and false images. The song she sings is gorgeous, but not particularly haunting. That isn't so much the problem as how long this movie takes to get going. Why does it takes days for the Siren to try to trap them? Why do these seemingly incompetents manage what they do before the end? In the end, the one wrinkle they hope to add to the siren myth seems muddled and pointless.

October 19th
014. Stir of Echoes [1999] imdb Blu-ray Supernatural thrillers took a big uptick at the end of the 90s. The Sixth Sense opened about a month before this excellent thriller. This is one I revisit every few years because it is well crafted. This story is based on a novel by Richard Matheson. Matheson has a way of taking a particular premise and populating it with characters and events that elevate the concept. David Koepp keeps the movie moving, provides dramatic visuals, and tense performances. I don't think this movie has a real surprise ending in anyway. You know going into the third act what is going on. It's just matter of the fine details that provides any twist or lifts any mystery here. Still, there's wonderfully built up peak of tension that resolves in sync with the mystery and coda that both revolves things and sets up more to come.
015. The Wolf-Man [1941] imdb DVD My favorite of the Universal Studio horror classics is also one of the last ones. There's something about movies from the 1940s that resonates with me. This movie is such a perfect mix of storytelling -- hollywood, mythic, horror -- that is pulls me in deeply. I love the bit of verse about werewolves, the opening book entry, the rules of lycanthropy. Combine this with the moody sets and filmmaking of the 40s, and it really just pulls me. I find I watch this particular movie with rapt attention each time.

October 20th
016. Fright Night [1985] imdb Netflix The 1980s did one thing well, it played outlandish stuff with terrible dress totally seriously and straight-forward. Twists? Only if you call the bad guys living for the sequel. The decade made it work. There's two ways this movie would be remade today -- either a self-aware modern slick movie, or a jump-fright dark-room horror. When they remade the movie, it is interesting that they straddled these two paths and did neither particularly well. Fright Night is a horror movie I saw when it was in theaters because it isn't actually frightening. It's a tale where you know the horror is there from the beginning, like most vampire flicks. There's no mystery of it being revealed. You don't see any killing until the bad guys start dying. And even then, the most likable bad guys usually end up alive for the sequel.

October 21st
017. Paranorman [2012] imdb Blu-ray What a likable movie this is from the same studio that produced Coraline and Box Trolls. What is nice, in the end, here is that the lead character stays true to himself. Instead of becoming someone super hero, he succeeds as himself and because of who he is. Usually, a movie will have him turn into a fearless hero who's nature is pivotal component of his success. Here his nature *is* everything. Ratatouille plays out the same way. The rat doesn't turn into a human at the end and become a great chef... he succeeds as a rat against all odds. Norman doesn't succeed because he's transformed into something new. He succeeds because he stays true to who he is.

October 22nd
018. The Thing [2011] imdb Blu-ray This not so exacting remakes turns on just enough throw back design and details to make it work while still presenting a new isolation horror full of paranoia. If there is some failure here in keeping us interested, I think it has to do with the horror tropes trotting out too often in the late-second and third acts. Instead of building more tension and paranoia with suggested horror, we are shown it too much. In the end, the big finale here is overshadowed by the coda that leads us right into the credits of Carpenter's superior film. Still, I find this one enjoyable and rewatchable.

October 23rd
019. Cat People [1982] NEW! imdb Cable/On-Demand It is interesting to see an 1980s take on Lewton's Cat People. The movie is played straight. There is no subtext under the surface. There is no mistaking the intentions here, it's all out in the open in clear big block letters with snyth score backing it. In the original, the awakening of Irena is left off screen. Sexual desires or simply romantic notions spur her forward to her primal nature. Jump forward 40 years and it's S-E-X that the trigger. Perhaps the message here isn't about a broader thing, but about carnal desires. Maybe in typical 80s fashion, this is some statement on having a strong sexuality leading to be locked away, by yourself in self-imposed sexual exile or by society's limited acceptance. Gone in this story is real romance. Instead we see the story of two Cat People. One who has accepted their reality and embraces it, and another who is awakened to it and fights as it drags them down. That romance, apparently it was just desire for the primal sexual animal within mixed in the end with compassion and care. Almost a twist ending, almost.

October 24th
020. Ghostbusters 2 [1989] imdb Blu-ray I had not seen this sequel for many years. It was quite enjoyable, but it does feel like a series of set-pieces more so than the original. Not nearly as good as the first but I love the Statue of Liberty end sequence and the whole New York angst played to the max.

October 26th
021. Hellboy [2004] imdb Blu-ray I really enjoy this light hearted supernatural action horror flick. The sequel is just as good as the first movie -- a rarity. I did start watching the sequel, but did not finish it during the challenge.

October 27th
022. The Bad Seed [1956] imdb Blu-ray Is this the original killer kid movie? I've seen this one and enjoyed it so much, I've picked up the Blu-ray earlier this year. This is such a good movie. The acting by the young actress Patty McCormack is exceptional. It makes the performances by the other actors and actresses, particularly the fine Nancy Kelly, seem pale by comparison.

October 28th
023. Jaws [1975] imdb Blu-ray Spielberg's brilliant creature feature that has a shark barely seen munching on Amity denizens up and down the beach resort's coast. I saw this movie during the summer of 1979 over three years after the release. It is amazing to think that a movie like this played in 1975, 1976 and 1979 in the theaters back then. Now, you are lucky is a movie plays out the full initial engagement before being relegated to one showing on one screen on the bad side of town. Still a favorite with the stand out performance by Robert Shaw who disappears into the role of a shark-haunted gristly barnacle of a sailor. Seeing this performance by Shaw always makes me think of his performance in From Russia with Love just 12 years earlier. It's impossible to think that a mere dozen years allows for these two performances. Shaw is young a vibrant appearing in Russia, and entirely gnarled and old in Jaws.

024. The 7th Victim [1943] imdb DVD Val Lewton's taunt mystery thriller is so out of time. Instead of devil worshipers committing horrible atrocities or cultist ghoulishness, they seem terribly mannered and sophisticated. Then end up feeling like some sorta civic organization that you can't leave, or else. As if maybe the local Elks killed you when you left the organization. I need to rewatch the other Lewton movies next challenge. Seeing the documentary, Cat People again, and this movie really shows how different and unique he was in Hollywood during the 40s.

Drive-in Double Feature.
Went to the drive in on Halloween night and saw not one but two horror movies.
025. Book of Life [2014] NEW! imdb Drive-in What a nicely animated tale. It has a classic feel to it, yet still feels very apt to today. I'm not sure I completely get the traditional animation look with CGI features but it doesn't bother me until I think about the effort and craft that such a movie would take traditionally and how that would be a truly amazing feat. There is still a wonderful array of artists involved in the modeling, animation, set design, and lighting, though. But that craft of the small articulated figures, the settings, it has a magic to it when done well. This seems a little lifeless somehow.
026. Dracula Untold [2014] NEW! imdb Drive-in Interesting rehash of the Dracula origin story ends up feeling a little bit like a blend of other recent action flicks. I'm not sure there is much horror here, mostly just the classic iconic monster here. I am such a fan of fantasy movies, though, this was rewarding and fun to watch. Luke Evans was properly driven in the leading role.

List is Finished.
