Re: 6th Annual Criterion Challenge - List Thread
1. A Hard Day's Night (1964) 4/5: A Hard Day's Night has been so much a part of popular culture, that I honestly can't remember if I've seen the whole thing or not. I found myself thinking about the unparalleled infatuation with The Beatles: Madonna, Michael Jackson, Lady Gaga, Beliebers (am I spelling that right?) all have rabid fans, but it's never completing gripped entire nations the way that that The Beatles have and, in some ways, still do. I was surprised at the solid cinematography, timeless humor, and, of course, the always-addicting music. It's great to get a Criterion release of such an important film.
2. The Phantom Carriage (1921) 3.5/5 Checklist: Spoiler:

6th Annual Criterion Challenge http://www.myfilmviews.com/wp-conten...12/weekend.jpg "It's - you, like, become this blank canvas, and it gives you an opportunity to project onto that canvas who you want to be. And that's what's interesting, because everybody does it." ~ Glen, Weekend *= first time viewing blue= personal BluRay black= personal DVD green= streaming orange= borrowed BD/DVD September 1st 1. The Cranes Are Flying (Letyat zhuravli) (Mikhail Kalatozov, 1957 / Soviet Union)* --- Spine #146 --- Veronica and Boris are young and in love when WWII breaks out, forcibly separating them. The film has beautiful cinematography that highlights the brutality of wartime life. 2. Night and the City (Jules Dassin, 1950 / United States)* --- Spine #274 --- Harry Fabian, a two-bit conman, thinks he has found a way to make it big by manipulating an aging boxer. Unfortunately, the mechanisms of underground London grind him up. September 2nd 3. Le million (René Clair, 1931 / France)* --- Spine #72 --- Penniless Michel finds out he has won the lottery only to find that his jacket and the ticket have been given to a thief. The visuals and choreography are stunning as people at cross purposes chase after the elusive jacket. September 3rd 4. The Spirit of the Beehive (El espíritu de la colmena) (Victor Erice, 1973 / Spain)* --- Spine #351 --- Six-year-old Ana lives in a dusty Spanish town and becomes obsessed with Frankenstein after seeing it at the local cinema. The film is so quiet and mesmerizing, perfectly capturing the inner life of a withdrawn child. September 4th 5. Ace in the Hole (Billy Wilder, 1951 / United States) --- Spine #396 --- Chuck Tatum is a reporter on the hunt for nationwide story and finds it by manipulating the rescue mission of a tomb robber. The film shows journalism at its absolute worst and sets up a world hungry for disaster. 6. Street of Shame (Akasen chitai) (Kenji Mizoguchi, 1956 / Japan)* --- Eclipse Series #13 --- A group of women who work in a brothel try to fulfill their dreams and live their lives. The management is worried about antiprostitution laws and push the women. It's haunting. September 5th 7. The Man in Grey (Leslie Arliss, 1943 / United Kingdom)* --- Eclipse Series #36 --- Clarissa and Hesther are school friends, one born to privilege and the other not. Clarissa goes on to marry the arrogant, violent Lord Rohan, and when Hesther reenters, she manipulates the loveless marriage for her own gain. God, I love a good melodrama! 8. Commentary: Night and the City (Jules Dassin, 1950 / United States) --- Film scholar Glenn Erickson discusses the history of the film's production as well as some of Dassin's artistic choices and the differences in the American and British versions. Very informative commentary. September 6th 9. Rome Open City (Roma città aperta) (Roberto Rossellini, 1945 / Italy)* --- Spine #497 --- When Criterion labeled this as a "tearjerker", they weren't kidding. Rossellini explores the lives of Italians struggling against Nazi occupiers in WWII, and those lives are grim and unpredictable. September 9th 10. Hoop Dreams (Steve James, 1994 / United States)* --- Spine #289 --- Two inner-city boys dream of playing in the NBA, and the documentary follows their journeys through a demoralizing and chaotic system. It runs the gambit of emotions and shows some troubling truths about our world. September 13th 11. Madonna of the Seven Moons (Arthur Crabtree, 1945 / United Kingdom)* --- Eclipse Series #36 --- Fun melodrama with some ponderous themes and lots of British people pretending to be Italian simply by saying they are Italian and having Italian names. September 14th 12. Pandora's Box (Die Büchse der Pandora) (Georg Wilhelm Pabst, 1929 / Germany)* --- Spine #358 --- Lulu is a showgirl who exudes carefree sexuality and is repeated exploited by the men around her. Enjoyable film about a tragic woman. September 15th 13. Pina (Wim Wenders, 2011 / Germany)* --- Spine #644 --- Documentary homage to modern dancer Pina Bausch. The dance sequences are absolutely mesmerizing with their inventiveness and energy. I want to seek out more examples of Pina's dances. 14. The Wicked Lady (Leslie Arliss, 1945 / United Kingdom)* --- Eclipse Series #36 --- Margaret Lockwood stars as Barbara, a woman hellbent on getting what she wants. After stealing her friend's husband, she gets bored and pairs up with a notorious highwayman. You better believe I enjoyed the hell out of this film! September 16th 15. Body and Soul (Oscar Micheaux, 1925 / United States)* --- Spine #371 --- Paul Robeson takes on two roles: a convict masquerading as a minister and a lovesick inventor. The performances along with the various editing techniques really elevated the film. September 17th 16. King of the Hill (Steven Soderbergh, 1993 / United States)* --- Spine #698 --- Depression-era coming-of-age story featuring a wealth of good actors (including Elizabeth McGovern doing her Ragtime shtick). Soderbergh is such a versatile directors, and I am always intrigued by his films. 17. Godzilla (Gojira) (Ishiro Honda, 1954 / Japan) --- Spine #594 --- Atomic testing awakens a giant monster that destroys a lot of stuff. I'm a huge fan of this film and am so glad it's part of the Collection. September 18th 18. Tiny Furniture (Lena Dunham, 2010 / United States)* --- 597 --- Aura has just graduated and moves back in with her mom while she tries to figure things out. Despite disliking most of the characters (especially the two men), I found a lot about this indie flick quite charming. September 19th 19. The Big Chill (Lawrence Kasdan, 1983 / United States)* --- Spine #720 --- A group of old friends reunites after one commits suicide. For me, the film is the perfect mix of bittersweet pathos and quirky comedy. Glad I finally caught up with it. September 20th 20. Borderline (Kenneth Macpherson, 1930 / United States)* --- supplemental film --- Experimental film about interracial relationships and lots of melodrama. It was interesting, but I'm not sure if I really understand what was going on. 21. Casablanca (Michael Curtiz, 1942 / United States) --- Laserdisc #73 --- Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman love and loose in Casablanca. Pure cinematic bliss! This is one of my favorite films. September 24th 22. Topsy-Turvy (Mike Leigh, 1999 / United Kingdom) --- Spine #558 --- Exquisite look at the conception and staging of Gilbert and Sullivan's The Mikado. The film explores the creative process as well as the human tendency to simplify the lives of others. September 25th 23. The Lady Vanishes (Alfred Hitchcock, 1938 / United Kingdom) --- Spine #3 --- Iris is traveling across Europe by train and befriends the charmingly British Miss Froy who promptly disappears on the train. Iris teams up with Gilbert to untangle the mystery. The film is infectiously fun and thrilling! 24. Mouchette (Robert Bresson, 1967 / France)* --- Spine #363 --- Mouchette cares for her ailing mother and cares for her baby brother and is consistently abused by her father. Bresson unblinkingly presents a bleak, troubled life, and I was very effected. September 26th 25. And Everything Is Going Fine (Steven Soderbergh, 2010 / United States)* --- Spine #617 --- Intriguing documentary on thespian and monologist Spaulding Gray. I decided to check this out after watching King of the Hill. It's good but very sad. 26. Weekend (Andrew Haigh, 2011 / United Kingdom) --- Spine #622 --- Beautiful romance about two guys whose one night stand turns into a very revealing weekend. It's one of my favorite films, and I'm so glad it's part of the Criterion Collection. September 27th 27. The Passion of Joan of Arc (Carl Th. Dreyer, 1928 / France)* --- Spine #62 28. Summer with Monika (Ingmar Bergman, 1953 / Sweden)* --- Spine #614 Extras Spoiler:

Re: 6th Annual Criterion Challenge - List Thread
2014 Criterion Challenge http://i1111.photobucket.com/albums/...lThatJazz2.jpg http://www.icheckmovies.com/signatur...collection.png First Time View Aug. 31 1. A Hard Day's Night (1964)-#711 Blu-Ray--One of the finest musicals from the 1960s, AHDN captures a moment when an English pop group became the image of a generation. ---In Their Own Voices ---“You Can’t Do That”: The Making of “A Hard Day’s Night" Sep. 1 2. All that Jazz (1979)-#724 Blu-Ray--Life as show biz, show biz as a substitute for life, Bob Fosse's cinematic self-flagellation is a magical experience. 3. Gate of Hell (1953)-#653 Blu-Ray--The color photography here is justifiably famous, accentuating the lush settings and the elaborate Heian-era costumes. Sep. 2 4. King of Hearts (1967)-LD#115 DVD--A sweetly charming antiwar fable explores the madness of war as unwitting UK soldier Alan Bates tries to locate a demolitions cache in a small French town occupied by the escaped residents of the local asylum during WWI. 5. The Silence of the Lambs (1991)-#13 Netflix--Anthony Hopkins's performance as the creepily evil cannibal Hannibal Lecter still holds up as an iconic movie monster. Sep. 3 6. Salesman (1969)-#122 DVD--In its own understated manner, Salesman is a brutal film, revealing the working lives of four men on the bottom rung of the economic ladder, selling Bibles door to door. They eat their meals in cheap diners and sleep far from home in motels, trying to close the deal and make that sale. Attention must be paid. Sep. 4 7. North by Northwest (1959)-LD#45 Blu-Ray--Cary Grant. James Mason. Eva Marie Saint. Martin Landau. Pure cinema heaven. Sep. 6 8. Thief (1981)-#691 Blu-Ray--Terrific caper film from Michael Mann, with one of my favorite character actors, the late, great, Robert Prosky Sep. 8 9. Nashville (1975)-#683 Blu-Ray--A sprawling take on the American Nightmare in the 1970s. Sep. 9 10. Pulp Fiction (1994)-#LD271 Netflix--I saw this in Seoul when it was first released, and all the drug references had been cut, so I had no idea why Mia was writhing on the bathroom floor. Sep. 10 11. The Wizard of Oz (1939)-#LD59 Blu-Ray--I remember when The Wizard of Oz was an annual event on TV that families would watch together. Somehow having it available on a snazzy Blu-Ray makes it feel less special. Sep. 11 12. Foreign Correspondent (1940)-#696 Blu-Ray--Not as awesome as The 30 Steps, but still solid Hitchcock. The effects in the plane crash sequence are still stunning today. Sep. 12 13. The Freshman(1925)-#703 Hulu--I don't generally get a chuckle out of silent-era comedies--I admire Chaplin and enjoy his work, but he doesn't make me laugh--Harold Lloyd , on the other hand, never fails. His movies are still hilarious nearly a century later. 14. Trouble in Paradise (1932)-#170 TV--i love Lubitsch comedies--this could use a Blu upgrade. Sep. 16 15. Ghostbusters (1984)-#LD118 Blu-Ray--Ghostbusters doesn't aim for profundity or existential significance. It wants to make the audience laugh and still succeeds 30 years later. 16. Eating Raoul (1982)-#625 Blu-Ray--A very funny subversive comedy, Eating Raoul's satiric take on Baby Boomer mores has lost its relevance, but its humor still works for me. ---The Secret Cinema Sep. 17 17. Judex (1963)-#710 Hulu--A very stylish crime thriller/ tribute to silent film from Georges Franju. The Maurice Jarre soundtrack is terrific. Sep. 22 18. Goldfinger (1964)-#LD132 Blu-Ray--The Bond 50 edition of Goldfinger looks extremely spiffy. I downloaded the original Criterion laserdisc commentary from 007 Dossier, and then watched the film synced with the commentary on my phone. I can't figure out why the commentaries were withdrawn from the market because nothing offensive is said, apart from an instance where Connery is described as being the kind of guy who who can walk into a room and f--- anyone. 19. The Music Room(1958)-#573 Hulu--Ray's story about a landowner living his last days in a decayed mansion has a very Chekhovian feel. Sep. 23 20. Time Bandits (1981)-#37 Blu-Ray--Sir Ralph Richardson's Supreme Being could pass as an as yet unknown regeneration of The Doctor. Still immensely enjoyable 30+ years after I first saw it in the theater. 21. Contempt (1963)-#171 TV--For me, Godard is very much hit or miss, but this is easily one of his more engaging films, and could not have been more aptly named. Sep. 24 22. The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004)-#300 TV--Probably Wes Anderson's weakest film, but weak Anderson is still better than 90% of films made today. Sep. 25 23. Mona Lisa (1986)-#107 Blu-Ray--Another tragic crime story from Neil Jordan. Bob Hoskins knocks it out of the park as a sad sack ex-con who falls in love with a top-shelf hooker and gets drawn into her search for a younger girl who has been sold into S/M slavery. 24. La Dolce Vita (1960)-#733 DVD--IMO, this is easily Fellini's most incisive and expansive film with the possible exception of Amarcord. 25. Vampyr(1932)-#437 Hulu--A masterpiece of horror, even though, like The Beyond, the narrative doesn't make much sense. Sep. 26 26. Dr. Strangelove, or How I Stopped Worrying and Learned to Love the Bomb (1964)-LD#143 TV--A masterpiece of black comedy with standout performances from Peter Sellers. Interesting how in 50 years our fears switched from a nuclear war with the Soviets to bands of desert barbarians cutting people's heads off. Sep. 27 27. Young Mr. Lincoln (1939)-#320 YouTube--Entertaining, and almost entirely imaginary, biopic about Abe Lincoln as a young lawyer who solves a case like a prarire Colombo. Sep. 28 28. It Happened One Night (1934)-#736 TV--A terrific screwball comedy which made Gable into a major box office star. Sep. 30 29. Peeping Tom (1960)-#58 DVD-It's a pity Criterion lost the rights to this shocker before they had a chance to clean it up for Blu-Ray. Released the same year as Psycho, Peeping Tom's depiction of a sexually repressed serial killer who uses his camera as a murder weapon disturbed theater audiences and ruined Michael Powell's career. If only it had been released a few years later when the 60s were swinging, Peeping Tom would have received the praise it deserved. 30. The Uninvited (1944)-#677 Blu-Ray--More atmospheric than scary, this is a terrific ghost story. Spoiler:
