We have traditionally allowed Seven and Silence of the Lambs, though. I guess it has more to do with the gore aspects of it and popular opinion. Out of those three titles, I think Rear Window is the farthest from being horror.
Yeah, I see it more as a crime, but there's a lot that would classify it as horror. Just an idea, but not sure if there is a suspense/crime type of challenge. Would be fun to do it in like May or something to give us a little taste of Halloween and watch movies like Seven and Silence of the Lambs and the sort.

Tried it last 2 years (watching a film series) and it was hard at times. Some of the films are just so awful that I just did it just to say I finally saw the entire series.

Not sure if Video on Demand counts, but I heard the new V/H/S movie will hit maybe a week before Halloween. Is ABCs of Death really horror, or more like just a bunch of trash throwing together to celebrate death?

I highly recommend just watching the original instead. It was actually one of my subset suggestions, Blacker than the Night. I'd rank it right along with the classics of the haunting sub-genre.

I caught the one with the lovely Marguerite Moreau on Showtime a few months back. I mainly watched for her, but it was better than I expected. Really slow-going, though.

I think the idea is to actually go see something at the theater, which is quite a different experience, sitting in the dark, watching something horrifying on the big screen with a bunch of strangers.

Seven and The Silence of the Lambs might not be exactly horror films, but I'd say they are at least horror-adjacent. If the Saw films count as horror, then one can say that the serial killer category is somewhat elastic.

Speaking of iffy titles, I'm thinking of watching the 1953 version of Houdini with Tony Curtis as a wild card for two reasons: Houdini's crusade to debunk mediums and spiritualists and his mysterious death on Halloween in 1926.

There are also some good deals on some OOP MGM Midnite Movies that just popped up on Amazon, like Who Slew Auntie Roo/ What's the Matter with Helen? for $4.15. Get 'em while you can!

We do have an Action/Adventure/Crime/Mystery Challenge in March. May has the Make-Your-Own Challenge where you can pretty much watch whatever you want (so you could watch 31 days of serial killer movies, or cannibal movies, or movies about female FBI agents, or Anthony Hopkins movies, or movies based on books...). The link for last May's discussion thread is still in my sig.

It's horror. The shorts are all quite short (under 5 minutes) so there's not a ton of time to build stories but some of the shorts in the first were entertaining. It isn't like Faces of Death or any of that crap.

I'm not trying to be argumentative but the Saw films are pretty straight forward horror films. I don't have a problem if someone counts Silence of the Lambs or to a bit of a lesser extent, Seven, but the Saw films shouldn't be a gauge of what should and shouldn't be allowed.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 10th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/

Serial killer movies are a good example of how horror isn't always about the content but the execution. For example, there are vampire movies that are more comedies than horror (like First Bite, Vampire's Kiss, etc). In my opinion it's a matter of the film forcing the viewer into some terrifying or horrific situation through clever subtle imagery (ghosts, supernatural) or seeing actual harm (torture porn, gore, etc). The Saw films excel at flaunting over the top grisly torment so I agree there clearly horror. However, Silence of the Lambs is more focused on police tactics to solve a crime (so more a thriller, more person centered). Silence of the Lambs could bleed into horror and I'd not argue against that but to me the design of the movie focusing on scary imagery or gore is a hallmark of horror films.

Would pre challenge equipment failures count for stats? My laptop is currently on the fritz and I'm accessing the net through my iPod.

I'm all set to do this challenge for the first time this year. Just for myself to see how many I can watch. I'll keep a log of what and when.

Traded in some old crappy dvds and picked up a couple new things for the challenge. The pile of stuff I had saved for the challenge is much bigger than I originally thought.

I get that. But a lot of those films probably won't have too many people in theaters. I'll be shocked if something like ABCs of Death 2 actually has more than 200 theaters or so. Bummer that See No Evil 2 is only getting a On Demand/straight to disc release.

Nice, I will have to check back in March. Would love to watch a bunch of mystery films and discuss them with people. I know this has the biggest turnout, but how is the turnout in March?

To each their own. But ABCs of Death got pretty awful reviews and the Facebook page got bombed with a lot of hate. I hated it a LOT. I was expecting more horror and it seemed more like either stereotypes or a bunch of Japs getting their fetishes on film (no offense). Maybe have been 3 good shorts.

Just mentioned this on the Facebook page, but the 31 Film Subset list is done! And that includes the accompanying 33 discussion threads. There's also bound to be a few instances of me excluding a streaming link or some other mistake, so let me know if I screwed anything up. And speaking of that, The Uninvited (2009) is no longer streaming on Netflix.

Don't get me wrong, I wasn't a fan of the film. A few of the shorts were entertaining but overall it wasn't good. I'm hoping for the best for part 2 but we'll have to wait and see how that turns out.

I know the Soskas' are pushing their short, but after getting ripped off (at least I felt) on Video on Demand, I won't be spending money on Part 2. VHS, though, I'm psyched for and I'll give the Soskas' See No Evil 2 a watch because I enjoy Kane and the people in the film.

There's a copy of Club Dread on StageVu, if you want to add that to the discussion thread.

So, basically, we're individually trying to watch 100 horror movies by the end of October. You can watch as many movies a day as you want so long as they fit the day's themes. If actively participating, you must post your list in the list thread, rather than this one.

Did I get that right?

Kiniest, that's about right, except you are not beholden to the themes. All of the extra stuff (theme nights, subset films, checklist) are totally optional. I usually don't participate in the theme nights unless I really want to see the selected film. Happy viewing!

Oh, that sounds pretty nice. But in being unacquainted to the horror genre, I think I'll play it safe and go along with the theme nights. Also, because I'm attending a film festival this month, I think I'll stick to one movie a day.

Thanks for the response, I look forward to participating.

New blood to the challenge is always welcomed and a lot of fun! I hope you have fun and don't forget to discuss whatever you end up watching which almost as fun as watching the movies themselves!
