This was originally designed as a TV pilot but was then released to theaters instead. A year later, Warner would begin production of a similarly themed TV series, “The F.B.I.,” in which one cast member, William Reynolds, carried over from this film. As a child, I saw this film on the bottom half of a double bill with THE INCREDIBLE MR. LIMPET, 50 years ago this week.

I have the uncut, restored DVD, but I watched the 90-minute pan-and-scan VHS TV edit because it was handier and I wanted to hear the Morricone score again. I actually like the shorter version better.

Reworking of “Phantom of the Opera” shot on the MGM backlot as it was being demolished to make room for real estate development. The “Phantom” is a former Shakespearean actor. How appropriate to see this on Shakespeare’s birthday.

CHALLENGE #2 LIST
CHALLENGE #3 LIST
CHALLENGE #4 LIST
(Work in progress) Every movie watched:
Spoiler:
SAFE LISTS
Spoiler:
CHECKLIST (Completed)
Spoiler:
1TV=First Time Viewing
1st:
Trailers: Attack of the Crab Monsters, Damaged Goods, Future-Kill
Extras: Something Weird Retrocuties #14, Hunting Hundra
(1TV)1. Avenging Eagle (1978)-Sadly, got off to a lackluster & complicated start with this one. Then again, there aren't a lot of Shaw Bros films I like that feature Alexander Fu Sheng. (DVR)
(1TV)2. The Burning Hell (1974)-I'm now 2 for 2 with these Eschploitation films! I seemed to enjoy this one way more than "Footmen will Tire". Extremely comical! (Stream)
(1TV)3. Bottoms Up (1974)-I thought this would've been really annoying after the first 5 minutes, but the zany pace was well sustained. The ad-libbed dubbing also kept things lively. (Stream)
(1TV)4. Hundra (1983)-It felt like a standard barbarian flick in the early going, but it took a (Surprisingly) reserved and un-eventful turn in it's entire 2nd act. It certainly suffered because of that. (DVD)
---------------------------------
2nd:
Trailers: The Naked Zoo, Boots and The Preacher, Def-Con 4
Extras:Sodoma (1970)
(1TV)5. Chappaqua (1966)-I've long had some interest in seeing this thanks to it's appearance on 42nd Street Forever:Vol-1. And I always assumed this was like the East Coast version of The Trip. I'd say that's an accurate assumption. (Stream)
(1TV)6. Roger Corman: Hollywood's Wild Angel (1978)-As expected, this isn't as comprehensive as Corman's World, but at least this documentary includes interviews with Paul Bartel and George Armitage. BTW, Johnathan Demme looks like a slender Kevin Smith here! (Stream)
(1TV)7. Omega Doom (1996)-Robotic Rutger Hauer's caught up in the middle of a cyborg-war. More talking than fighting occurs. At least this movie re-introduced me to Shannon Whirry. Hopefully, I'll get to run into 1 more movie of hers before this challenge ends. (DVD)
(1TV)8. This Naked Age (1933)-My "Nudie Cutie" entry---Even though this was more of a nudist colony film. A very jumbled piece (And too much man-@$$ for my tastes) Thankfully, it's short-running time quickly bailed me out. (Stream)
(1TV)9. I Was a Teenage Frankenstein (1957)-A little slower than I always expected, but I'm still glad to have finally seen this one. Loved the color shot of the makeup at the end. (Stream)
---------------------------------
3rd:
Trailers: Cry Baby Killer, House on Skull Mountain
Extras: Moviocrity #302
(1TV)10. Blind Fury (1989)-Rutger Hauer goes Zatoichi on us! I admit to having quite a load of fun with this one. Biggest surprise-viewing so far! (DVD)
(1TV)11. Yeti: A Love Story (2006)-This felt more like a series of sketches than an actual "Movie". I doubt I'll run into a better name than "Sex Piss" for the rest of this challenge. (Stream)
(1TV)12. Deadly Honeymoon (2010)-My "Lifetime movie" pick. Only reason why I chose this one was because Summer Glau was the star....Too bad she wasn't enough to save things. My Lifetime pick from last year was much better. (VOD)
(1TV)13. Indecent Desires (1968)-Slow, but one of the more interesting flicks I've seen from Doris Wishman. (Stream)
(1TV)14. Magnum Cop (1978)-I admit to battling some exhaustion while watching this one. That's because this felt more like a noir than all-out action. I must say though, Joan Collins looked pretty dang hot near the very end though! (Stream)
---------------------------------
4th:
Extras: Emmanuelle Revealed, Laure - A Love Story
(1TV)15. Last Woman on Earth (1960)-The oddest color-tinting I think I've ever seen in a movie! Quite intriguing in the early going, but the 2nd half slowly began to get flat. (Stream)
(1TV)16. Laur (1976)-Mostly bland Emmanuelle spin-off. Had D'amato (Or even Franco) directed this, things might have been more memorable. I did like the DVD extras/interviews though. (DVD)
Spoiler:
^Freddie Mercury?
---------------------------------
5th:
Trailers: Forbidden World, The Gore Gore Girls
(1TV)17. Laser Mission (1989)-Yeesh. This was like an Andy Sidaris movie without all the T&A. So strange to see Brandon Lee go from this to The Crow. (DVD)
18. Just for the Hell of It (1968)-Even though I had seen this movie before, I couldn't remember what happens in the end. Maybe I had convinced myself not to be reminded what happened! (DVD)
(1TV)19. The Jesus Trip (1971)-Kind of a good concept, It's just that everything is filmed sooo slooowly. The actors looked like sleepwalkers most of the time. (Stream)
---------------------------------
6th:
Trailers: Vixen, This Stuff'll Kill Ya
(1TV)20. Hot Rod Rumble (1957)-Even though no rumble never occurs in this movie, I still thought this was a pretty good flick about a framed gang member. (Stream)
(1TV)21. Alvin Purple (1973)-Despite experiencing audio difficulties for about 15/20 minutes, this still ended up being pretty entertaining. (Stream)
(1TV)22. Blast-Off Girls (1967)-So-so H.G. Lewis take on an Elvis/Beatles movie. Needed a lot more "Blast-Off Girls" in it though. (DVD)
---------------------------------
7th:
Trailers: Sorority House Massacre, Dr Evil + Dr Psycho Meet Bloody Mary
Extras: Something Weird Retrocuties #32
(1TV)23. Dragon Missle (1976)-Lo Lieh is on the warpath of obtaining a special medicine---And using his head-copping boomerangs on anyone who gets in his way. All those decapitation moments never got old. Plus, it sure was odd seeing Tony Liu in a Shaw Bros flick. (DVR)
(1TV)24. Cutthroat Island (1995)-My "Financial Bomb" pick. Even though this was a big departure from the stuff that I've been watching, at least this movie had a big enough budget to blow enough shit up & keep me satisfied. (VOD)
(1TV)25. Eat My Dust (1976)-Terrible 2nd half, but an okay first half. Loved the POV shots that occur all throughout the movie. (Stream)
---------------------------------
8th:
Trailers: Cold-Blooded Beast, Runaway Girl
(1TV)26. Tougher Than Leather (1988)-I've never, ever, heard one positive thing about this one, but (Good Gravy Marie!) I actually didn't think it was that bad! I'm guessing that most of the other viewers just took this movie way too seriously. (Stream)
(1TV)27. The Devil's 8 (1969)-While this isn't going to never win any awards for craftsmanship, I ended up having a good enough time with this Dirty Dozen-esque take on Moonshiners. (Stream)
(1TV)28. A Virgin in Hollywood (1953)-Not so much a venture into "Hollywood", but more of a fit for the burlesque world. Another one that I didn't seem to mind much. (DVD)
(1TV)29. Bowery at Midnight (1942)-Eh, this seemed to get a little bit better as it gradually went on. However, I would've much perferred it if it were another "Lugosi meets Bowery Boys" movie (Which is what I originally thought it was) (Stream)
(1TV)30. El Puro (1969)-Quite a low-key spaghetti western (Not a whole lot of characters, plenty of dead silence, minimal action) but I still ended up being involved with this. I think this is also the most screentime I've ever seen Mario Brega recieve. (Stream)
---------------------------------
9th:
Trailers: Female Jungle
Extras: Peeping Tom in the Dressing Room
(1TV)31. Reckless Decision (1933)-My "Roadshow" pick. It has it's moments, but the "Reckless Decision" at hand (Involving pre-marital relationships) just isn't as thrilling to watch as drug use or white slavery. (Stream)
(1TV)32. Our Man in Jamaica (1965)-My "Eurospy" pick. Nothing much to say here other than it was kinda nice to see the entire film set in Jamaica (Most spy films, regardless of how cheap they are, can't stay in one location) (Stream)
(1TV)33. Hollywood After Dark (1968)-This is the 2nd "Behind-The-Scenes of Hollywood" movie I've seen that deals with nothing on the subject. Well, to be fair, the original title of this movie appears to be Walk the Angry Beach. That seemed to be a much better fit. (DVD)
(1TV)34. Miami Connection (1987)-Ninjas on motorcycles. And with that image alone, this film single-handedly wins the internets!(Stream)
---------------------------------
10th:
Trailers: Starlet
Extras: Unsung (Pam Grier)
(1TV)35. The Rotten Apple (1963)-The 2nd half of my Rue McClanahan double-feature. While this one was much better made than Hollywood/Dark, it just came off as uneventful and annoying to me (I don't think I've ever heard so much damn yelling in one movie before) (DVD)
(1TV)36. Battlefield Earth (2000)-My "Critical Bomb" pick. Dull and lame as expected. (VOD)
(1TV)37. Hell Bound (1957)-My "Gangster-Noir" pick. Even though this was a lot different that what I'm used to seeing from noirs, it was still difficult for me to get into this. But what do you expect when something like Miami Connection is still lingering in the mind? (Stream)
(1TV)38. Hidden Assassin (1995)-Possibly the worst acting I've ever seen from Dolph Lundgren. (VOD)
---------------------------------
11th:
Trailers: Lady Frankenstein
(1TV)39. Moon over Harlem (1939)-Whoa. I wonder if this film holds the record for the first interracial kiss on film! (Stream)
(1TV)40. Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd (2003) My Bad Sequel to a "Well regarded film" pick. I actually thought the leads played their parts well. Too bad the plot was gawdawful. (DVR)
(1TV)41. The Miracle Fighters (1982)-Even though this was too zany for me to really enjoy, this still ended up making up for the last 6 movies I watched. (DVD)
---------------------------------
12th:
Trailers: The Stepmother, Trouble Man
Extras: Something Weird Retrocuties #46
(1TV)42. Date Bait (1960)-Sometimes dark. Sometimes hokey. Overall, a good watch! (Stream)
(1TV)43. Queen Pin (2010)-My "Hood" pick. The longest 96 minutes I've had to endure yet. (Stream)
44. The Cosmic Monster (1958)-Well, according to my icheckmovies stats, I had actually seen this movie before. But as I was watching it today, I couldn't recall one thing about it. Perhaps because it was so boring that I didn't want to remember any of it. (DVR)
---------------------------------
13th:
Trailers: The Blood-Spattered Bride
Extras: Sheree's Harem Dance
(1TV)45. Santo y el aguila real (1973)-Not that much action in this installment (Santo's more like a detective in this one) but there sure is quite a bit of animal cruelty: A cockfight, poisoned cat, 1 (Real) killed rabbit and 1 (Real) horse taking a vicious fall off a cliff. (DVD)
(1TV)46. The Chicken Chronicles (1977)-The trailer for this made an appearance in 42nd Street Forever-Volume 4, so I included it here. Even though this isn't a carbon copy of other teen movies made around that era, it still isn't entirely memorable once it ends. (DVR)
(1TV)47. Sholay (1975)-My "Bollywood" pick. I might've liked this more if it were about 50 minutes shorter (LOL'd at the complete shot-for-shot "Nod" for Once upon a time in the west) And since the musical scenes weren't subtitled, I fast-forwarded through them. Hope I don't get penalized for that. (DVD)
(1TV)48. Chained (2012)-Pretty dang depressing stuff here. I need to pop in some sexploitation to get in a better mood! (VOD)
---------------------------------
14th:
Trailers: Not of This Earth, The 10th Victim
(1TV)49. Honey Britches (1971)-I saw this under the title of "Demented Death Farm" (Or something like that) Looks like Fred Olen Ray added John Carradine as a narrator and got the film re-released by that title. As far as the original film goes, it's a bore. Containing the longest filler I've encountered yet (People aimlessly walking & running around in a forest---Just to pad out the running time) (Stream)
(1TV)50. Timebomb (1991)-Kinda like a male version of Long Kiss Goodnight, but with a wee bit of sci-fi. It was made more interesting by the cast: Michael Biehn, Patsy Kensit (Adorable as always), Richard Jordan (Looking like an older twin of Biehn) and Billy Blanks (Safe-list check!) (DVR)
51. Southern Comforts (1971)-One that I felt like re-visiting. Slightly better the 2nd time around. (DVD)
---------------------------------
15th:
Trailers: My Dear Killer
Extras: Something Weird Retrocuties #37
(1TV)52. Rebellious Daughters (1938)-Starts out okay, but doesn't dive deep enough into exploitation-territory down the stretch.(Stream)
(1TV)53. Shaolin Mantis (1978)-A very slow start (It almost feels like it's gonna turn into My Young Auntie) Thankfully, that element comes to an end and we get nothing but asskicking from there on out. (DVR)
(1TV)54. Radioactive Dreams (1985)-Never knew Michael Dudikoff could be so annoying. Even though I can't say that I enjoyed this, I do give it credit for being one of the more original things I've seen for this challenge. (Stream)
(1TV)55. Drive-Thru (2007)-Alright, I admit that the main reason why I watched this was because of Sita Young (Too bad she was in the movie for just about a minute) Didn't really care for this, but it still could've been a lot worse. (DVD)
---------------------------------
16th:
Trailers: Beneath The Bermuda Triangle, Queen Kong
(1TV)56. The Weird World of LSD (1967)-Zzzzzz. Just a bunch of random scenes scooped together. One of the scenes was taken from another feature (It contains the famous "Flapping-like-a-bird-on-the-couch" sequence) and I guess that film (In it's original form) doesn't exist anymore. Too bad, because I'm sure I would've been much more satisfied had I been able to see that instead. (Stream)
(1TV)57. Robot Jox (1989)-One of those movies that I always had some interest in seeing, but just never got around to it....Untill now! Pretty much what I expected (A surprisingly good thing!) (DVR)
(1TV)58. Nightmare in Badham County (1976)-I always thought that this was a rape-revenge film, but it's a ultimately a WiP (Women-in-prison) Wasn't expecting that grim ending at all! (Stream)
(1TV)59. Zapped! (1982)-Another one that always eluded me throughout the years. I expected much more raunchiness, to tell you the truth. (Stream)
(1TV)60. Quiet Days in Clichy (1970)-Wasn't expecting a certain hardcore shot to appear! As for the rest of the movie, the last half of it fell completely flat, but I didn't mind what preceded it. (DVD)
---------------------------------
17th:
Trailers: Barbarian Queen, Scum of the Earth
Extras: Bruce Lee: A Warrior's Journey (Original GAME OF DEATH footage)
(1TV)61. Turist Ömer Uzay Yolunda (aka Turkish Star Trek)(1973)-Ok, so I guess there was a popular Turkish franchise called "Omar The Tourist" and this was his crossover with "Star Trek". This quickly overstayed it's welcome, but I admit there was some great use of Pink Floyd's "Echoes" near the end! (Stream)
(1TV)62. No Retreat, No Surrender 2 (1987)-I was expecting more of a traditional martial arts film rather than a Missing in Action knockoff. Some flashy, energetic stunts here and there (Motorcycle jumping sequence was a nice highlight) (Stream)
63. Game of Death (1978)-Felt like going for the optional Bruce pick. It's been a long time since I've watched this in it's entirety without Bey Logan's commentary. As bad as this film is, I noticed that it becomes watchable once we get to the Sammo/Bob Wall fight. (Stream)
(1TV)64. Massacre in Dinosaur Valley (1985)-I went in thinking this was "Cannibal Ferox 2" when, halfway through the movie, I suddenly recognized the movie from the "Massacre in Dinosaur Valley" trailer! Don't you just love it when you get revelations like that in movie-marathons? Anyway, I had a good enough time with this bad boy. (Stream)
---------------------------------
18th:
(1TV)65. KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park (1978)-My "TV movie" pick. Another that I tried to catch much earlier but never could. And as bad as this was, I was actually expecting it to be much worse. Can't say that I'm no hurry to revisit it though. (Stream)
(1TV)66. The Road Killers (1994)-It's got a nice start, but things slow down drastically in the middle. The ending almost saves it. (DVR)
(1TV)67. Elvis: That's the Way It Is (1970) My *Optional* Elvis pick. His best concert film I've seen yet. (DVR)
(1TV)68. Hannie Caulder (1971)-My Rape/Revenge pick. Despite liking the film enough, it just still came up a little short in achieving greatness. (DVD)
---------------------------------
19th:
Trailers: Inga, The Seduction of Inga, Veil of Blood, Laura's Toys
Extras: (Something Weird) Exploitica #11
(1TV)69. The Secret of Magic Island (1957)-I included this because of it's trailer appearance on 42nd Street Forever-Vol. 5 (I think this also counts as my first ever G-rated film for these challenges) The Daredevil-frogs was the bigget highlight to me. (Stream)
(1TV)70. Eliminators (1986)-Yet another movie that I had wanted to see since I was a kid (Even back then, I'm sure I would've been very disappointed with this) Possibly contains the lamest group of villains I've seen for this challenge. (Stream)
(1TV)71. One Down, Two to go (1982)-I remember reading a review for this saying that the audience spends it's time in a coma as much as Jim Kelly's character does. I'd say that's true to some extent. (Stream)
(1TV)72. Stateline Motel (1973)-Kind of a slow potboiler, but I still thought it made up for the last two stinkers that I had to sit through...Which was probably helped out thanks to the appearances of a few Bond Girls (Ursula & Bach) (Stream)
(1TV)73. Swedish Wildcats (1974)-Even though some big melodrama largely overtakes the last half of this movie, this film had already won me over by that point. Then again, when it comes to erotic cinema, Sarno's the guy that hardly ever lets me down....Unlike others *cough*metzger*cough*. BTW, Even though Christina Lindberg has a bit part in this, it's clear how much of a scene-stealer she managed to be. (DVD)
(1TV)74. Hell Behind the Bars (1984)-"Hell Behind Bars"? They way everyone kept on having sex, it should've been "Heaven Behind Bars"! This was just the type of sleaze that I signed up for! (Stream)
---------------------------------
20th:
Trailers: Abigail Leslie is back in town
Extras: Forbidden Daughters (1927), Interview w/ Joe and Peggy Sarno
(1TV)75. Tentacles (1977)-This Eco-terror flick seemed to stray away from most of it's other knockoffs thanks to it's good cast, unique score, and great surround sound (For it's time) (Stream)
(1TV)76. Ninja in the Deadly Trap (1981)-Kind of a little mix between 5 Deadly Venoms and Five Element Ninja. Not as cool as it sounds, but at least the fight scenes start to heat up towards the end. (Stream)
77. The Curse of Her Flesh (1968)-Even though this is my least favorite of the "Flesh" trilogy, I felt like giving it another look for the Roughie check. The climactic action battle that takes place in the back of a truck still cracks me up (You can even spot an accidental cameo by Roberta Findlay in there) (DVD)
(1TV)78. Arena (1989)-I just couldn't really get into this one. Only worth watching for the non-CG alien makeup. (Stream)
(1TV)79. The Nuns of Saint Archangel (1973)-So slooow and serious. Yet I was somehow into it (Unlike the above) (Stream)
(1TV)80. Sex Wish (1976)-Man! Why can't today's pornos be like this?

---------------------------------
21st:
Trailers: Stripped to Kill, Brain of Blood
Extras: Something Weird Retrocuties #49
(1TV)81. Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo (1984)-At long last, I finally got to see this thing in it's entirety (Though I must say it wasn't quite worth the wait) and I'm almost certain that this movie beats out Rocky IV for most musical montages. (DVR)
(1TV)82. The Case of the Bloody Iris (1972)-Such a good feeling to have finally ran into Edwige Fenech for this challenge. I've gotta say that one of my main problems with giallos are the dull exposition scenes (Mostly involving an inspector) but everything had moved very nicely in this movie. (Stream)
(1TV)83. Pajama Party (1964)-I didn't think it could ever be possible, but these AIP beach movies are starting to become bearable to me. This also might have been the hottest I've ever seen Annette look (RIP) (DVR)
(1TV)84. Bugged (1997)-This seemed to have always been well-liked as far as I can remember. I agree that some of the gags/FX got some charm, but overall I thought this was a little too talky for the most part. (Stream)
(1TV)85. The Red Nights of the Gestapo (1977)-Lots of characters, lots of political intrigue and a long-running time. Which means that this wasn't your typical trashy nazisploitation fluff. However, the last 20 minutes began to finally resemble what I expect to see in this genre. (Stream)
(1TV)86. Darker Than Amber (1970)-Even though it looks like I watched a TV-version, I couldn't make out anything that had been badly cut. As for the rest of what I saw, I dug it. The memorable brawl at the end (Though much shorter than I expected) was still a kick-ass moment. (Stream)
(1TV)87. Bloodeaters (1980)-Really not that bad at all. Some momentum was lost during the middle when we get introduced to new characters, but this came real close to being a pretty fun horror flick. (Stream)
---------------------------------
22nd:
(1TV)88. Disciples of the 36th Chamber (1985)-Reminiscent of Shaolin Mantis (Another Liu Chia-Liang film) which ended up taking a while to get going again. It was nice to see Gordon Liu as San Te one last time. (DVR)
(1TV)89. Death Dimension (1978)-Sub-standard Al Adamson action film that has Jim Kelly in a showdown with Oddjob (Not as epic as it sounds) I think this movie also holds the record for the most henchmen I've seen this month. (Stream)
90. Gammera the Invincible (1966)-As with Cosmic Monster, this was another movie that I was sure that I haven't seen before, but all my viewing-stats proved me wrong again. Regardless, this movie seemed better to me on a 2nd viewing. (DVD)
(1TV)91. Up the Creek (1984)-Not quite the raunchy sports movie I had hoped for. (Stream)
(1TV)92. Shocking Asia (1976)-I thought this would have been an edited version, but it appeared to be the real deal to me...Yet, I can't fully guarantee that because I, uh, did some house-cleaning during the sex-change segment. (Stream)
(1TV)93. Mystics in Bali (1981)-Aside from the hilarious special FX, this ended up being overhyped to me. At least I was able to find out where that crazy laugh from Mondo Macabro's trailer-reel comes from. (DVD)
(1TV)94. The Love Garden (1971)-Wow. I think that just might have been the most romantic, sensual, touching, grainy, 16mm, soft-nearly-hard/core film I've ever seen! (DVD)
---------------------------------
23rd:
95. The Klansman (1974)-Somewhat of a sentimental pick here because this was filmed locally (Northern California, not Alabama) The movie's always seemed a bit jumbled to me which could be due to have only seen the TV-version (I've yet to see the original Theatrical cut. Hopefully that'll submerge one of these days) (DVD)
(1TV)96. The Dragon Dies Hard (1976)-Damn, this felt like the longest movie I've watched so far. The main highlights were a fight on top of a moving bus (Pretty extravagant for a Bruce Li film) and a 5-minute "Seizure of death" involving the "Real" Bruce Lee. (Stream)
(1TV)97. Gamera vs Gaos (1967-Maybe it's just me, but of the few Gamera films I've seen, they seem to have better production value than Godzilla flicks from that era. (DVD)
(1TV)98. Death Wish 4: The Crackdown (1987)-After only seeing the beginning of this some 20+years ago, I finally made my way to the end of this. Though I respect how their were new ideas to make Kersey a hired gun, I still perferred the loner-vigilante Kersey in the earlier films.(Stream)
(1TV)99. Caged Fury (1983)-Despite having problems telling a lot of the actresses apart, I found this to be a surprisingly engaging film. Mostly because I don't think I've ever seen Cirio Santiago get this dark before! (DVD)
(1TV)100. Tender and perverse Emanuelle (1973)-An Emanuelle movie that has her getting killed in the beginning? See if it's true! As dreary as this movie tends to be, it still managed to be one of the most shortest that I've encountered this challenge. Thank god for that! (Stream)
---------------------------------
24th:
(1TV)101. Future War (1997)-My MST3K pick. I'm sure I would've found this movie to be just as hilarious without the MST3K guys! (Stream)
(1TV)102. The Velvet Vampire (1971)-So lovably silly. Expect this one to appear in my favorites list at the end of the challenge!(Stream)
(1TV)103. Knights of the City (1986)-Hmmm....Not sure if I liked this or hated this (Last time this happened was when I saw Devil's Express) This reminded me a lot of The Last Dragon---But without all the kung fu. (Stream)
(1TV)104. Ninja in the Dragon's Den (1981)-For an HK film about ninjas, this seemed to actually have a pretty good premise. I just wasn't expecting it to be filled with so much humor. I'm sure I would've enjoyed the movie more if it was subtitle and proper OAR (The pan/scan version I saw was headache-inducing) (Stream)
105. Orgasmo Nero (1980)-Now I know why this is labeled in the "Shocksploitation" category. It's because of Susan Scott's horrific boob-job! (DVD)
---------------------------------
25th:
(1TV)106. Crimson, The Color of Blood (1973)-Even though this movie had a bit more action than I expected (During the conclusion) it was still hard for me to get into this (Every lengthy challenge I do, there's always bound to be a victim like this) I did like the film score though.(Stream)
(1TV)107. Loose Screws (1985)-Thankfully, this will be the last 80's T&A comedy I'll watch for a good long while.(Stream)
(1TV)108. The Martial Club (1981)-Not only was it nice to finally watch a kung fu movie in cantonese with subtitles, but it was nice to see Kara Hui reunite with Gordon Liu (I never knew he got to play Huan Fei-Hung before!) End fight set in close quarters was the best I've seen all month. (DVD)
(1TV)109. Death Warmed Up (1984)-Never knew this was Ozploitation....And I never knew how crazy this was supposed to be! Might've actually liked it more if the stream wasn't so sub-par.(Stream)
(1TV)110. Two Roses and a Golden Rod (1969)-Well, the only good thing that I can say about this movie is that it's more watchable than Linda and Abilene (Another 60's softcore oddity that's on Netflix-streaming) (Stream)
---------------------------------
25th:
111. Foxy Brown (1974)-Watched w/ Jack Hill's commentary. Never knew that the Queen Pin in this had played the warden in Big Doll House! (DVD)
(1TV)112. Stripped to Kill (1987)-This started to drag as it went along. But on the plus side, I noticed that the heroine started to look hotter and hotter. (Stream)
(1TV)113. Space Is the Place (1974)-As with my viewing of Radioactive Dreams, another that I didn't exactly fully enjoy, but I appreciated it's originiality. (Stream)
---------------------------------
26th:
(1TV)114. The New One-Armed Swordsman (1971)-As I mentioned with Martial Club, I was now ready for some Cheng Cheh carnage and wasn't let down with this! I've yet to see "Return/1-Armed Swordsman", but I liked this movie WAY more than the original movie with Jimmy Wang Yu. (DVR)
(1TV)115. The Hanging Woman (1973)-Though this began to feel a little bit too long down the stretch, the film's concept, makeup, boobage, and constant mention of "Mr. Jackoff" made this a good viewing. (Stream)
(1TV)116. Bulletproof (1988)-The only good thing about this one was it's cast: Gary Busey, Henry Silva, William Smith, L.Q. Jones, Juan Fernández, Luke Askew, R.G. Armstrong, Thalmus Rasulala and Danny Trejo. (DVD)
(1TV)117. Death Game (1977)-This had potential to be a stand-out home-invasion flick, but things began to get repetitive (That damn theme song got in the way more often than I thought it would too) I do wish I could've seen this with better picture quality though----Mostly for Colleen Camp. (Stream)
---------------------------------
27th:
(1TV)118. Treasure of the Four Crowns (1983)-I tried watching this in anaglyph 3-D, but called it quits after a half hour (I can just never get it to work properly) Anyway, the movie was dumb as hell, but I didn't hate it. Morricone's score was the thing I liked most.(Stream)
(1TV)119. The Swinging Barmaids (1975)-Thought this would be a 70's T&A comedy. It turned out to be a dark thriller(!) At least William Smith provides a highly satisfying closing scene! (Stream)
(1TV)120. Dragon Lord (1982)-I thought I had seen this before. Come to find out, I had only seen bits & pieces of it. Ending-fight definetly saves this one from mediocrity. (DVD)
---------------------------------
29th:
(1TV)121. Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II (1987)-The movie really came alive once the full possession takes place....Locker room scene was a big highlight

(1TV)122. The Dungeonmaster (1984)-Even though there were over 5 directors working on this thing, that still wasn't enough to keep me interested into what was going on. (Stream)
(1TV)123. Evil Face (1974)-Kinda of an Italian gothic ripoff of Eyes without a Face with Klaus Kinski. It's got a few good moments. I'm guessing a certain tombstone in the movie marked "Ivan Rassimov" was a in-joke. (DVD)
---------------------------------
30th:
(1TV)124. Reform School Girls (1986)-Predictable, but oh so fun. Something tells me I should've saved this one to be the very last film of the challenge. (Stream)
(1TV)125. The Suckers (1972)-A softcore version of The Most Dangerous Game complete with heavy print damage. I'd say I ended this challenge on a high note! (DVD)
---------------------------------
Finalized.
8 out of 125 movies were repeat viewings.

March 31
01. Ursus in the Land of Fire (1963)* (Mill Creek Warriors 50 Movie Pack)
Ursus of the shepherd people fights an usurper in order to free his friends and to return the rightful princess to the throne. Ed Fury is beefy and likeable as Ursus but the princess is more useless than usual, often loosing some clothing (although never enough) to allow the bad guys to follow. There are some really cool sets with a giant face motif. The action is just OK and the plot is pretty typical as is the English dub. The picture has OK color but is seriously cropped on both side with a background hum in the soundtrack but is is watchable. 5/10
April 01
02. Valley of the Lions (1961)* aka Ursus in the Valley of the Lions (Mill Creek Warriors 50 Movie Pack)
A kingdom is invaded and the king and queen are killed but their baby son, Ursus, is found and raised by a pride of lions. More Ed Fury goodness but kind of restrained. There's just not that much action and when it finally happens it's over all too quickly and it's just not that well done even by peplum standards. The finale where Ursus takes on four elephants which are dragging his followers into a blazing fire is kind of cool and there is some quicksand earlier in the movie (always a favorite plot device) but the sets are nothing special. The picture doesn't seem as badly cropped as Land of Fire but it's black and white while it seems to have been made in color. 4/10
April 02
03. Goliath and the Barbarians (1959)*
In the sixth century AD, barbarians sweep down Italy and after Verona is sack, the son of a slain nobleman leads a band of resistance fighters. Steve Reeves is very good and I especially liked the scenes where he donned a cat/lion mask and single-handedly trashes large groups of barbarians. 6/10
04. Goliath and the Vampires (1961)*
Raiders attack a village and abduct all the young women, taking them to a nearby island. Goliath follows in order to get his sweetie back. This started life as a Maciste film with Gordon Scott playing the hero. Both Arabian Nights and sword and sorcery vibes here, with the vampire more like an evil wizard. There are underground kingdoms, giant insect monsters, zombie like soldiers, and magical powers like astral projection. I had a lot of fun with this one. 6/10
April 03
05. Black Cobra (1987)* (TGG Urban Action 15 Movie Pack)
A cop who won't play by the rules is assigned to protect a woman who witnessed a murder. Fred Williamson stars in a made in Italy picture. Boy, this one hurt a bit. Some of the worst dubbing I've ever heard, very bad acting, very predictable and at times very stupid plot, poor pacing and lame action sequences. They even rip off the "Do you feel lucky" speech. Williamson who I usually like looked lost and he was probably the best one in the cast. On the other hand some things were just so bad I got a few really good laughs and even more WTF moments. Lots of synth in the score too. And there are TWO more of these pigs coming up. Yowsuh. 3/10
April 04
06. Black Cobra 2 (1990)* (TGG Urban Action 15 Movie Pack)
Malone, now located in Chicago, is sent to Manila to learn Interpol techniques. Better than the first but not by much. The pacing is still off and the action is generally poorly done. Fred Williamson does some martial arts in this one but the fights seem more like run-throughs than finish products. He does seem much more involved in this picture though. The epic climax is even more underwhelming than the one in the first movie. And finally the sound track often has way too much cowbell for my taste. 4/10
April 05
SWV Sharpshooter Triple Feature
07. The Zodiac Killer (1971)*
A serial killer terrorizes San Francisco and taunts the police. Supposedly based on real life events but I wouldn't know. Parts of the movie are told from the killer's point of view. Starts out OK with some nice WTF moments. There are two main suspects, Grover the pissed off truck driver and Jerry, the vegetarian mail carrier. Once that is resolved, about half way through the movie, any semblance of plot disappears and we just get one murder after another, each one getting more and more tedious. 4/10
08. The Sex Killer (1967)*
Tony, a stock boy in a mannequin factory, buys a pair of amazing binoculars (they have built in zoom and they can change the point of view) to check out the rooftop, topless sunbathers. The leads him to getting a high priced hooker but he can't come up with the $20 she wants so he takes a more violent route to satisfaction. Lots of dressing and undressing and lots of scenes of typical days in the mannequin plant (mostly guys dusting stuff). Also lots of kind of interesting New York City street scenes. Short with enough jaw dropping moments to get a 5/10.
09. Zero In and Scream (1971)*
In the Hollywood Hills area a sniper is killing off the male half of couples while they are having sex. Most explicit of the three movies, full of full frontal female nudity and very long softcore sex scenes punctuated by an occasional rifle shot. No real plot and an abrupt finish. My advice- make love indoors, close the curtains and avoid this boring turkey.2/10
April 06
10. Blindman (1971)* R2 DVD
A blind man tries to track down 50 women that were taken from him that he has a contract to deliver to 50 miners for wives. Classic plot and pretty good movie. I liked Tony Anthony (the Blindman) and his sly sense of humor and Ringo Starr fit right in as one of the baddies but I kept thinking, even with a seeing eye horse, how the heck did he make it all the way to Mexico? Although a crack shot, and good with dynamite, our hero does get fooled a few times. 6/10
April 07
11. Mars Needs Women (1967)
Five Martians land on Earth and search for women they can take back to Mars to help with a genetic imbalance. They come up with an exotic dancer, a flight attendant, a college homecoming queen, an art student, and a biologist specializing in genetics. Not as silly than you might think from the title but kind of boring. Cheap sets and costumes but the too obvious flying saucer model was well done. Yvonne Craig helps too. Not awful but unexciting and plodding. 4/10
April 08
12. Angel (1984)* (Image Triple Feature: The Angel Collection)
The tag line High school honor student by day, Hollywood hooker by night just about sums it up. Except for the part about the serial killer who likes to carve up prostitutes. I was expecting something sleazier but considering some of the films I've been watching lately I may have lost some judgement in this area. The street life seemed kind of wholesome, full of quirky but goodhearted characters who are all interesting and well acted. This is a competently made movie with a few bare breasts, some gore. some decent action, egg sucking, and implied necrophilia. Maybe a bit higher on the sleaze scale than I first thought. 6/10

13. Black Cobra 3: The Manila Connection (1990)* (TGG Urban Action 15 Movie Pack)
Malone is called back to the Philippines to help an Interpol agent track down a stolen CIA arms shipment. More and better action scenes than in the first two but the acting is not as good as in number 2. Fred Williamson is Fred Williamson but the other actors, even his partner, are poor. The final battle is actually kind of exciting. I enjoyed this one more than the other two so it gets a 5/10.
April 10
14. The Tattoo Connection AKA Black Belt Jones 2 (1978)* (TGG Urban Action 15 Movie Pack)
Jim Kelly is sent to Hong Kong to recover a stolen diamond worth three million dollars. Lots of action follows. Old school kung fu movie in a modern setting. Drags a little in the middle and the picture is cropped some on the sides but it's not much of an issue. Entertaining if you are a fan of these or if you just like to see Jim Kelly in action. I am and I do. 5/10
April 11
15. Hercules the Avenger (1965)* (Retromedia Hercules Collection)
While Hercules (Reg Park) tries to free his son's spirit from the realm of the Earth goddess, her son roams the human world pretending to be Hercules. Very fantasy orientated with some great sets and some wonderfully cheesy monsters but also some slower sections. Mostly footage from two earlier Hercules films, Hercules and the Captive Women and Hercules in the Haunted World, the second directed by Bava. I didn't know this while watching but it does explain some gaps in the plot. Still it was well done and a lot of fun. 7/10
April 12
16. Ulysses Against the Son of Hercules (1962)* (Mill Creek Warriors 50 Movie Pack)
A son of Hercules is charged by Jupiter to capture Ulysses so he can be punished for blinding The Cyclops, the son of Neptune. Very good. Our heroes visit two bizarre kingdoms, one of bird people with a particularly hot queen and the other of cave dwelling beast men ruled by a psychotic king. There are well staged battles and some cool sets but we really needed to see more of the bird queen. This was originally a Hercules movie but the US release was part of a syndicated TV package so we get to hear the peppy Sons of Hercules theme song. 6/10
SWV The K. Gordon Murray Collection
17. The Doctor of Doom (1963)*
Women wrestlers Gloria Venus and Golden Rubi help police track down a doctor who abducts women and removes their brain. A lab set, hooded villains, a man-ape, lady wrestling matches and training are just some of the cheesy highlight in the very entertaining film. The insane dubbing is just icing on the cake. The plot has a distinct three part structure almost as if the film was a compilation of TV shows or a serial. 7/10
18. The Wrestling Women vs. The Aztec Mummy (1964)*
Almost the same cast and crew but now Gloria is named Loretta. The Black Dragon Gang, lead by a Japanese Fu-Manchu clone is killing scientist while trying to get the Aztec Codex which has a clue to the location of a huge treasure. Highlights here include some effective scenes with the well designed mummy, a wrestling women vs. judo sisters match, and a hidden lair. You just can't get this kind of stuff anywhere else. Not as many laughs but still entertaining. 5/10.
19. Glen or Glenda (1953) (Image The Ed Wood Box Set)
An examination of men who like to wear women's clothes. A police inspector interviews a psychiatrist after the suicide of a transvestite. A strange film, not always good (stilted, sometimes pretentious or incomprehensible dialog and flat acting) but it's always interesting and sometimes compelling. 6/10
April 13
20. Dark Alibi (1946)* (TCM Spotlight Charlie Chan Collection)
Charlie tries to prove that a man on death row is innocent, even thought the prisoners fingerprints were found at the scene of the crime. A lesser Chan film from the Monogram era. Although I've come to appreciate Matan Moreland's talent and humor, there is far too much time spent on humor and Number 3 son is an idiot. The mystery itself was only fair. 4/10
21. Jail Bait (1954) (Big Box of Wood)
The son of a prominent doctor gets involved with a petty hood and eventually murder. OK crime drama doesn't have great acting but the dialog is less convoluted than in Glen or Glenda and the plastic surgery gimmick is a nice touch. The guitar/piano soundtrack is striking at times. Steve Reeves' first major film role. The Image DVD is taken from a much nicer print. 5/10
22. BattleTruck aka Warlords of the Twenty-First Century (1982)*
After the oil wars, a loner on a motorcycle takes on a despotic warlord and his armor plated semi. Some good moments but very very predictable. 5/10
23. Weasels Rip My Flesh (1979)*
A space probe returns from Venus but crashes and causes a weasel to mutate into a horrible killing machine. An amateur film shot on Super 8 for around $400 (according to imdb) and yet I had to admire the cleverness that could turn common kitchen items into a space probe taking samples and acting which was bad but not the worst I've seen. I was never bored and there were some nice variations on the standard 50's SF film this seemed to be based on. No one would say this is a good movie but I kind of liked it. 3/10
24. Motor Psycho (1965)* (The Russ Meyer Collection R2)
A veterinarian, alone and unarmed, goes after three punks on motorcycles who raped his wife. OK story, there were some tense moments but you keep wondering "Just how stupid is this guy?". Some lovely women in the Russ Meyer mold, the actress Haji is especially good as a fiery cajun woman. 5/10
April 14
25. King Dinosaur (1955)
A new planet, Nova, enters the solar system and the U.S. rushes a manned spaceship into production and sends four of the dumbest scientists you can imagine to investigate. This one is a bit of a turkey, full of nonsense. The two female scientists are particularly bad actresses and the guys are marginal. Directed by Bert I. Gordon so its full of stock footage and lots of lizard on lizard battle action. Even though it runs just over an hour, it still manages to drag a bit at times. 4/10
26. Serpent Island (1954)*
Three people search for gold in the Caribbean and run into a voodoo ceremony -- oooh scary! Lots and lots of stock footage, of San Pedro California, of sailing, of islands, of a voodoo ceremony. At least is was in color. Surprisingly all three leads had long acting careers even though the snakes managed to out act them all in this movie. Bert I. Gordon produced, did the cinematography, and was in charge of the editing. Whew. 3/10
April 15
27. Avenging Angel (1985)* (Image Triple Feature: The Angel Collection)
Track star by day, law student by night. When a dear friend is murdered Molly takes a break from classes and Angel hits the streets to track down the killer. Sequel to Angel takes a turn to comedy as the wacky warmhearted denizens of Hollywood Boulevard take on the mob. Not nearly as entertaining as the first and even less sleazy. Still, the new actress playing Angel looks damned good as a hooker. 4/10
April 16
28. Shake, Rattle & Rock! (1956)* Streaming AMCTV
A bunch of old farts get up in arms about rock and roll and try to get a teen dance show taken off the air. Some great early rock and roll performances (Fats Domino, Big Joe Turner, Tommy Charles) interspaced with scenes full of lame humor. The cast is full of familiar faces: Touch (Mike) Connors plays the host of the show and Raymond Hatton and Percy Helton (you'd recognize him) add some tolerable humor. Sterling Holloway drives me up a wall with his faux-jive speak, although he is funny at times. The lovely Lisa Gaye, who I was not previously familiar with, adds a lot of eye appeal. 5/10
April 17
29. Rock All Night (1957)* Streaming AMCTV
Two thugs, fleeing after a botched robbery, end up in a dumpy bar and take everyone there hostage. I thought this was going to be another Shake, Rattle & Rock but it turned out to be a tense little drama, well written and well acted. It had a feel that reminded me of a Twilight Zone episode (a small group of people in a confined space dealing with a situation) and had stand out performances by Dick Miller as a pugnacious trouble maker and Russell Johnson as one of the thugs. Two great songs by The Platters that open the film are a nice bonus. Produced and directed by Roger Corman. 7/10
30. Mondo Topless (1966)* (The Russ Meyer Collection R2)
"Documentary" about the topless dancing craze that started in San Francisco and spread throughout the world. Even worse than the title suggests. A nudie cutie with lots of bouncing boobs gets boring pretty fast. Oh, to be twelve again! There is some humor from the suggestive narration and excerpts from supposed interviews with the dancers but the best thing is that it's mercifully short. Lots of shots of portable radios and tape recorders too. This apparently made quite a bit of money. 2/10
April 18
31. Night of the Ghouls (1959)* (Image The Ed Wood Box Set)
Police are sent to investigate reports of ghosts around an old house formerly occupied by a mad scientist. Kind of a sequel to Bride of the Atom has Kenne Duncan as the main baddie. I got familiar with Duncan through his many rolls in serials, often as the main henchman, and have always liked his performances. This is classic Ed Wood and lots of fun in a bad movie kind of way. 5/10
April 20
32. Fly Me (1973)* (Roger Corman's Cult Classics Lethal Ladies 2 Collection)
Three female flight attendants get involved with drug smuggling and white slavery. Pretty bad but pure exploitation. Stupid, annoying humor, a lame, confusing plot, poorly done kung fu, and some dumb dialog is held together by seriously sub-par acting. But there are quite a few shots of naked women, one OK gunfight, and a few unintentional laughs. It lost at least a point for the humor. 4/10
33. The Babysitter (1969)* (BCI Drive-In Cult Classics Vol. 3)
A middle-aged assistant DA gets involved with his teenage babysitter and the affair is used to blackmail him by the girlfriend of an accused murderer he is prosecuting. The acting leaves a lot to be desired and the story is interesting if tacky. The resolution took me by surprise but wasn't totally convincing. 5/10
April 21
34. Teenagers From Outer Space (1959) (Image Teen Terror Collection)
Space travelers land on Earth and decide it would be the perfect place for a gargon ranch. One of them objects and flees; another is sent after him while the others return to space to get the livestock. For me, this is a perfect bad movie. The story isn't bad but the execution is awful at all levels. However the movie takes itself seriously all the way through. I think its often hilarious but never campy. The voices seemed odd to me and I later found out that they were recorded before the filming and while the shooting was going on the actors had to lip sync to the dialog. Several of the actors made few or no other movies but Harvey B. Dunn who played Gramps (a gem of a bad performance) had a solid career, including parts in a couple of Ed Wood films. Realistically this should be a 3/10 or so but I had such a great time watching it I have to give it a 7/10.
April 22
35. Teenage Tramp (1973)*
Wayward sister Kim returns home to get some cash from uptight, big sister Hilary to help her draft dodging boyfriend but Kim's ex, drug dealing Maury, soon arrives with his band of hippie followers. A sordid look at the dark side of the counterculture. Very few likeable characters but it held my interest. Pretty good but abrupt finale. 5/10
April 23
36. Teenage Hitchhikers (1975)*
Two girls, on the road looking for freedom and liberation, use their bodies to get whatever they can that will get them further in their quest. Along the way, they run into many quirky but strangely uninteresting characters. Lots of nudity including a very, very long orgy. A kind of lighthearted look at the 70's. The humor usually didn't work at all for me although once in a while a gag was so old and so stupid I had to chuckle. Not much of a plot and consistently bad acting. Pure exploitation but the film would have been more fun if any of the characters had been even a little appealing. 4/10
April 24
37. Teenage Graffiti (1977)*
A farmer's two sons turn against their younger step-brother because they think their father is being too generous with him plus he's been hanging out with some of the rich folks in town. Pretty good though some of the acting isn't great. It seems like some of the locals may have been used in small parts and the lead actress sometimes mumbles her lines so you can't always understand what she is saying. 6/10
38. Teenage Mother (1967)*
A high school student claims to be pregnant to get her boyfriend to marry her so her father tries to get the new high school sex ed teacher (from Sweden!) fired since he sees her as the reason for his daughter's condition. Awesome insanity! From Fred Willard as the baseball coach to Duke, the local pot and porn pusher, it all rocks. At one point we're suddenly up close to an actual human birth - aided by some doctor's newly developed Universal Forceps with the amazing ball-joint feature. Totally above average trash. 7/10
April 25
39. Teenage Zombie (1959)*
Four teens find themselves trapped on a remote island inhabited by a sinister woman and her hulking servant Ivan. Low budget cheese from start to finish, it looks like most of the interiors were shot in somebody's house. The lab set is nicely cluttered and there's also a gorilla wandering around. I love it! No great shakes but some laughs and it's easy to watch. 5/10
40. The Violent Years (1956)* (Big Box of Wood)
Four high school girls go around sticking up gas stations but get in over their heads when they get involved with a foreign conspiracy. Written but not directed by Ed Wood and has all the flair of one of his films. Preachy at times concerning the causes of juvenile delinquency with some dull acting and some nice jaw dropping plot twists. 5/10
A Something Weird Video Double Feature
41. Lost, Lonely, and Vicious (1958)*
A moody young actor tries to figure things out after he becomes a hit in his first starring role. Kind of a psychological drama with a nice cast of tacky supporting characters. Really a pretty good movie. 6/10
42. Jacktown (1962)*
Frankie gets caught making out with an underage carhop and gets sent to Jacktown where most of the 6,000 inmates don't take kindly to perverts. Not quite the prison picture I expected although there are some of the trappings. Interesting and well paced. 5/10
Also three shorts: Crisis in Morality; Hell is a Place Called Hollywood; Little Miss Delinquent
43. Cannonball (1976)*
An underground cross country car race takes a turn for the deadly when gamblers and vengeance seekers get involved. Lots of car stunts. Fun stuff. 5/10
April 26
44. The Weapon (2000)* (Brentwood Galaxy of Terror 4 Movie Set)
Set on a devastated planet that only has one city and one source of water. The chance to destroy the ancient weapon that caused the ruin arises but could the weapon be used to save the people? Low budget, poor acting, but with some very imaginative touches to the costumes, sets, and locations. The story is sometimes confusing though. 5/10
45. The Dinosaur Chronicles (2004)* (Brentwood Galaxy of Terror 4 Movie Set)
Two stories involving dinosaurs. The first, much longer one, is a lost world adventure. The second only peripherally involving dinos, is a post-apocalypse adventure. There is some brief, pretty good stop motion effects that don't match the rest of the movie at all. The rest of the creatures are static model or perhaps even hand puppets, nicely made but not at all convincing. Still this was strangely entertaining. 4/10
46. So Darling, So Deadly (1966)* (Sinister Cinema)
Joe Walker and Captain Tom Rowlands are called to Singapore to protect a scientist, who has developed a super laser, from the mysterious Golden Dragon organization. Lots of action but it gets repetitious after a while. 5/10
47. Common Law Cabin (1967)* (The Russ Meyer Collection R2)
A grizzled old man, his shapely daughter, and even shapelier "housekeeper" run a broken down dude ranch in the middle of nowhere. Trouble comes from a bickering couple and a cold stranger who claims to want to buy the ranch. A bit lighthearted compared to earlier films but still sleazy with a moral. 5/10
48. Karate: The Hand of Death (1961)* (Something Weird Video)
An American karate expert returns to Tokyo seeking his old girlfriend and gets involved with a search for Nazi treasure. More intrigue than martial arts although there are scenes of real karate training. The staged fights are not that good and the acting is substandard. The story is interesting but not always clear. 4/10
49. Curse of the Blue Lights (1990)*
Three ghouls want to raise a powerful ancient being. A group of teenagers tries to stop them. Good creature makeup and sets. The acting is generally OK. A bit of gore and goo is pretty well done. A few minor twists to the standard teens vs. monsters plot. 6/10
April 27
50. 42nd Street Forever Volume 4*
51. Dangerous Money (1946)* (TCM Spotlight Charlie Chan Collection)
Charlie investigates the murder of a US Treasury agent on board an ocean liner bound for Samoa. Has the usual problems of the late Chans but not as bad as Dark Alibi. Less time seems spent on silly humor and the mystery is more interesting although the solution is a little vague. 5/10
52. Colt 38 Special Squad (1976)*
A master criminal known as The Black Angel blackmails an entire city using remotely detonated bombs. He is opposed by a special police unit. Good stuff. Well done action and some nice cat and mouse moments. Good acting. 7/10
53. Truck Turner (1974)*
Truck Turner hunts down bail jumpers for a living but finds himself being hunted after he kills a pimp and someone wants revenge. Fun with a nice funky soundtrack. 6/10
54. The Sinister Urge (1960)* (Big Box of Wood)
Police try to find a serial rapist/murderer and break up a porno racket. Typical Ed Wood goodness. 5/10
55. The Beast of Yucca Flats (1961)
The Desert Patrol searches for a vicious killer while trying to pick off innocent civilians from the air. Awful, almost a non-movie. More narration than dialog and what dialog there is almost seems to be the narrator doing voices. What happens often makes no sense. There were a few laughs because laughing is always better than crying. 2/10
April 28
56. Teen-age Monster (1958)* (Image Teen Terror Collection)
A young boy is disfigured by a meteorite that crashed into the mine he was working in. Years later, he has become a hairy, inarticulate brute who often strangles people. Only his mother can control him and she tries to keep him hidden from the world. Set in the late 1800's. The acting isn't bad but there really aren't any scary or even suspenseful moments. The monster looks OK but we see him too often. Probably a good movie to make out to. 5/10
57. Weekend With the Babysitter (1970)* (BCI Drive-In Cult Classics Vol. 3)
Sort of a sequel to The Babysitter. The same babysitter is played by a different actress and the same actor plays a different old guy. There is the same basic plot but with lots of elaboration. A movie director spends the weekend with the babysitter while, unknown to him, his wife is being held captive by drug runners. The actress playing Candy is much blander than the original and the old guy movie director is even lamer than the old guy prosecutor. Candy's buddies are more annoying and ridiculous. There's a whole bunch of little things like this that make me like this less than the original. 4/10
April 29
58. Angel III: The Final Chapter (1988)* (Image Triple Feature: The Angel Collection)
Freelance photographer by day, porn film extra by night. After her long lost mother is blown up, Molly takes to the streets as Angel to find the sister she never knew she had. And it goes down hill from there. The streets are sleazier here so Angel quickly abandons them for porn films and a high class hooker outfit. Acting is OK but the film is pretty much action free until the end. This was a bit of a chore to get through. 4/10
April 30
59. Teenage Doll (1957)* (Image Teen Terror Collection)
The members of a female gang, The Black Widows, hunt for a "good" girl who killed one of their members. Not an elaborate plot but the movie is full of psychotic characters head shaking moments. The looks at the home lives of some of the girls are priceless as is the final rumble in a auto junkyard. Lead June Kenney (the good girl) is a real doll. Directed by Roger Corman. 6/10
60. Delinquent Girl Boss: Blossoming Night Dreams (1970)*
Several girls who were released from the same reform school work in the same bar and are trying to go straight. Trouble comes from a local yakuza boss who wants to buy the building the bar is in. Good movie, not too extreme with a little brief nudity but more underwear scenes, panty shots and the like, not to mention quite a few girl vs. girl fights. Lead Reiko Ooshida is very appealing with an energetic performance swinging between the joy of living and reform school toughness with some butt kicking in between. Good sound track includes a couple of songs. 6/10

April 09

Re: Fifth Annual Drive-in/Exploitation/B-Movie LIST THREAD April 1-30 2014
Goal: 60 Movies Legend: * = FTV Wife's Thoughts In Blue | ![]() [/size] |
- March 31st - | |
![]() | 1.) The Supergrass (1985) (VHS) My Thoughts: One of the last VHS tapes I ever bought. I remember originally not really being that interested as I was looking for something more US drug counter culture at the time and I think I never even finished watching it. Figured I would give it one more go here since I am culling the VHS collection and it seemed to be somewhat fitting for the challenge. The film was a bit of a wash, interesting for sure but oddly incongruous at the same time. This British drug comedy appropriately co-starred the chick from Absolutely Fabulous, and she got naked. Maybe why this VHS only title still sells for such a premium. Have I just talked myself out of selling this? Damn it. (3 out of 5) |
- April 1st - | |
![]() | 2.) The Annihilators (1985) (VHS) My Thoughts: A group of Vietnam vets have to teach a community to fight back against several out of control gangs. This is probably the least violent most comedic 80's vigilante movie I have seen. A lot of slightly recognizable 80's faces, horrible acting and cheesiness all around. Doesn't quite satisfy that vigilante craving but as far as bad 80's movies go it is a shoe in. Also one could conceivable watch CHUD II as a follow up to this piece, if one was feeling especially masochistic. (3 out of 5) |
![]() | 3.) Allan Quatermain and the Lost City of Gold (1986) (VHS) My Thoughts: This shitty Indiana Jones clone is apparently a sequel to a movie that I have no desire to see now. It does star a young Sharon Stone and James Earl Jones. The former doing a passable impersonation of Kate Capshaw in Temple Of Doom and the latter playing an almost embarrassing bad tribal chief. Passable as background noise but not as a feature presentaion but I will give it an extra 1/2 point for having Cassandra Peterson in it. (2.5 out of 5) |
![]() | 4.) The Pick Up (1975) (DVD)* My Thoughts: A couple of girls hitchhike a ride with a man taking a motorhome cross country. One seems to be having delusional episodes while the other reminisces she's about her sexual history. The "plot" is fairly incoherent but the movie has enough sex scenes to make up for it. I kept expecting this to turn into a horror movie at any minute but no, it just continued to be weird. (3 out of 5) |
![]() | 5.) The Teacher (1974) (DVD)* My Thoughts: A sexy older lady and a teenage boy, add to that an obsessed mentally deranged admirer and you actually have a pretty good movie. Queue the "where were those teachers when I was in high school" comments. Great nudity, sufficiently creepy psycho and lots and lots of van paneling talk, how that was in style I will never know. A high point so far for this Mill Creek 32 film set. (4 out of 5) |
- April 2nd - | |
![]() | 6.) East End Hustle (1976) (DVD)* My Thoughts: For a movie about pissed off hookers out for revenge this movie way under delivered. That and the Mr. Skin recommendation on the front of the box really set the bar to a level that this little Canuk film couldn't reach. The print was overly dark, poorly acted and worst of all boring. But hey what do you really expect for $2.83? (2 out of 5) |
![]() | 7.) Best Friends (1975) (DVD)* My Thoughts: So, Apollo from BSG does not know how to pick friends. Another cross country motor home movie, this time with two couples heading to California to get married. Then the funny looking one kind of goes crazy and does everything he can to fuck things up. The movie was super weird and uncomfortable, I guess that was the point but I just don't see the audience draw here. Also problems involving Vietnam vets seems to be quick becoming a theme for this challenge. (2.5 out of 5) |
- April 3rd - | |
![]() | 8.) Trinity Goes East (1998) (DVD)* My Thoughts: Set in the present day China with different actors playing the leads. Initially I was a little apprehensive but in the end I am a sucker for films about white people in Asia films. It was a little, ok very, stupid but it was entertaining. Lots of weird dubbing, dragon balls, fat guy karate & some way over the top ridiculousness with a little potbelly pig sidekick. (3.5 out of 5) |
![]() | 9.) Trinity & Bambino (1995) (DVD)* My Thoughts: They should have called this Trinity: The Next Generation. The primes behind this one is that Trinity and Bambino both had children with different prostitutes and they seek each other out, become fast friends and save a small Mexican village. The duo is a little less swarthy in this one and the story is a little more standard. I liked it, just not as much as any of the other Trinity films in this set. (3 out of 5) |
- April 4th - | |
![]() | 10.) The Sister In Law (1974) (DVD)* My Thoughts: Hey! It's Lydecker from Dark Angel as a young hippie! It is so weird to see him like this. Anyway, a man (young Lydecker) returns home after drift across the country. Just in time it would seem to have sex with his brother's as-strained wife, his mistress and then get involved with a very oddly spectacled mob. Acceptable with some good nudity but nothing spectacular here. (3 out of 5) |
![]() | 11.) The Stepmother (1972) (DVD)* My Thoughts: What other generic description of a person movie will they do next!? This one played a little too soap opera-y for my tastes. I started to get exploitive towards the end but not enough to really save it. Lot of older women forcing themselves on younger men this challenge, this time with a lot more resistance. (2.5 out of 5) |
- April 5th - | |
![]() | 12.) Miami Connection (1987) (Blu-Ray)* My Thoughts: One of the most 80's tactic movies I have ever seen. This should be watched as an action bedfellow to Breakin 2! There are some surprisingly good 80's songs about Ninjas and friendship. Biker gangs, ninja biker gangs, training montages, cocaine, this movie has everything. Now before you rush out to order the best 80's movie ever, I should say that is is a great bad 80's movie. Bad acting, bad script, laudable fight scenes, just all around bad. That being said there was something so endearing about this movie, it just felt right. And I can't believe there is a commentary on this, I will have to try to squeeze it into this challenge somewhere between the clearance Troma titles and the Mill Creek Crown International sets. (4 out of 5) |
- April 6th - | |
![]() | 13.) Auditions (1978) (DVD)** My Thoughts: I couldn't help but wonder how many of these were staged. Most did not seem so but there were a few that felt like ringers in here. It was a truly bizarre movie/documentary, lots of TnA and does have that candid camera aspect going for it. But those are really the only things going for it, if not for boob this wouldn't be with the disc it was pressed on. (2.5 out of 5) My Wife's Thoughts: I expected little high but I forgot thats a Full Moon Movie I could not expected too much it is a little interesting the setting but it was same thing over and over people just naked, not super great. But it's great idea make some nudity movie without paying too much actor and actress. (2 out of 5) |
- April 7th - | |
![]() | 14.) Eye Of The Tiger (1986) (DVD)* My Thoughts: I can't believe they got the song and they defiantly put it to use. Gary Busey plays a regular, non-insane, man who falls afoul of a drug dealing biker syndicate. When the crooked law enforcement refuses to do anything about it he and his black best friend must take matters into their own hands. And did I mention they had a Mexican attack truck, yeah it was that kind of movie. Over the top cheesy 80's awesomeness. (4.5 out of 5) |
![]() | 15.) Exterminator 2 (1984) (DVD)* My Thoughts: A Vietnam vet and his black best friend must take matters into their own hands using their garbage attack truck. A lot of parallels in this and Eye Of The Tiger. This movie is actually the reason I bought this Scream Factory 4-Pack seeing as how the first one was one of my top challenge titles last year. The lead is played by the same weird looking guy from the first movie, think Dwaine from Basket Case. This time he is fighting what is essentially the foot clan from the first Ninja Turtles movie trading the Japanese element with the guy from Solo all glittered up and in shoulder pads. It lacked the gritty rawness of it's predacessor and just felt a bit off in comparison. I did like the weapons building montage, people in the 80's really knew how to mod stuff. (3.5 out of 5) |
- April 8th - | |
![]() | 16.) Idiocracy (2006) (TV) My Thoughts: I didn't really care for this movie the first time I saw it but it has grown on me, probably due to Comedy Central playing it so much. For a over the top dumb comedy it does have a hauntingly intreating premise. In fact me and my wife could easily be mistaken for the childless smarter couple in the opening. Perhaps I should go knock her up, for the good of mankind. (3 out of 5) |
![]() | 17.) Malibu High (1979) (DVD)* My Thoughts: A nearly flunked high school girl finds the solution to all of her problems is in her pants. It was a decent decent into crime movie that I am sure the kids who actually go to Malibu High still love today. Although I wish they had chosen a more attractive girl considering how often she would be naked. It reminded me of the 'virgins' in Breeders. (3 out of 5) |
![]() | 18.) Cindy And Donna (1970) (DVD)* My Thoughts: So there were some sisters and a bunch of sex, I got to say it really didn't hold my attention. The scenery was way better than Malibu High but man does not live by boob alone. (2.5 out of 5) |
![]() | 19.) Logan's Run (1976) (Blu-Ray) My Thoughts: I was introduced to this one a little later in life, I was maybe 23 the first time I watched this movie and I fell in love with it. Now as I am approaching 30 it is becoming more and more relevant to me (maybe due in no small part to the movie Free Enterprise). I loved the scope of this movie and the idea of self sustaining human enclosures is so intreating. And while I usually bemaon most CG effects there were a few meandering miniature shots that could have used a bit of help. It would be interesting to see if the buildings used for the interiors for this feature are still around. Is it dated and corny, sure. But it is still mandatory genre material. (4.5 out of 5) |
- April 9th - | |
![]() | 20.) One Dollar Too Many (1968) (DVD)* My Thoughts: Think It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World but set in the old west. Add to that John Saxon, an Italian guy who looks like a young Marlon Brando and a bunch of banditos and you come out with a movie that really delivers. Oddly enough western comedies really strike a chord with me which is strange considering I despised the western genre until discovering Leone. Hopefully this will be one of many high points in this set. (4 out of 5) |
- April 9th - | |
![]() | 21.) Rouge Justice (1970) (DVD)* My Thoughts: Also known as The Beast which is a much more appropriate name for this film as Klaus Kinski plays the rape-iest guy in the west. I just wish they had got him to ADR his own voice as that would have really pushed it over the top, as it is having an American voice stand in does a great deal to normalize him. One of the weirdest westerns I have ever seen for sure and yet another reason to never trust Kinski. (3 out of 5) |
- April 10th - | |
![]() | 22.) The Creeping Terror (1964) (DVD)* My Thoughts: I have friends tell me things like Battlefield Earth is the worst movie they have ever seen and I just laugh at them and think of some of the crap I own; like The Creeping Terror. Seriously this one has got to make my top 50 worst movies of all time. It is so bad that at some point they decided to dump half the audio and just narrate the majority of the film. The monster sucks, not the worst I have seen but pretty bad. I wish I had watched the MST3K version... in fact I think I will for a little juxtaposition to this trash. (1.5 out of 5) |
- April 11th - | |
![]() | 23.) Land Of The Minotaur (1976) (DVD)* My Thoughts: Cushing, Pleasence, cult; damn I should have saved this one for the October Horror Movie Challenge! Was my thought about 5 minute in but it quickly became a pretty vanilla affair. For a film that is basically a rip-off of The Wicker Man with a little more star power I was underwhelmed. (3 out of 5) |
- April 12th - | |
![]() | 24.) A Very Harold And Kumar 3D Christmas (2011) (DVD)* My Thoughts: I was never a big fan of Harold and Kumar but I am a big fan of 3D Blu-Rays. So I did preemptively get loaded since it was probably the only way I was going to enjoy this movie. I had an ok time but it very well could have been the alcohol. It was a stupid movie with some at times good 3D. No lols but a few smiles. (3 out of 5) |
![]() | 25.) Quick Draw Okatsu (1969) (DVD)** My Thoughts: A mostly paint by numbers revenge flick. A little more over the top than most Japanese offerings at the time but it does not live up to the original. There was something about the original being in black and white that made it grittier in a way that really complemented the revenge. It was still decent just didn't compare well. This was the first time I can remember seeing an old school Japanese bounty hunter and he was kind of awesome, kind of wish it had been a whole movie about him. (3.5 out of 5) My Wife's Thoughts:Great movie but too much killing and blood and choto gross. And I did... middle of the movie... I'm some scenes I did not expected that happen. But it's pretty good. I want to learn kendo. (4 out of 5) |
- April 13th - | |
![]() | 26.) The Hearse (1980) (DVD)* My Thoughts: An above average Crown International picture! A slow burn haunted house movie movie with a lot of what seems almost out of place carsploitation. A woman decides to get away from her troubles in a house she just happened to recently inherit out in the country. The house turns outs out to have some real bad mojo and she quickly becomes the towns social piranha. Lots of misdirection or meandering depending on what kind of mood you are in and an out of nowhere awesome bit part by a young Dennis Quaid. It was a bit all over the place but I enjoyed it. (3.5 out of 5) |
![]() | 27.) Django Kill... If You Live Shoot! (1967) (Blu-Ray)* My Thoughts: This was a weird movie. Sort of like a Jodorowsky western with a bit more cohesion. It has the staples of a typical revenge western; bags of gold dust, betrayal, bandits. And then everyone arrives in this fucked up old west town and things go all squirrely. Also Django is dressed like Han Solo, yeah... at least it wasn't boring. (3.5 out of 5) |
- April 14th - | |
![]() | 28.) The Babysitter (1969) (DVD)* My Thoughts: 1969 and still black and white? I actually really liked this movie. It is a genre that has been parodied a lot but there is something very alluringly smutty about it. An older man, a younger woman add a blackmailer to the mix and you have some good watchin'. And I especially liked the no consequences ending, what guy wouldn't? (4 out of 5) |
- April 15th - | |
![]() | 29.) Weekend With The Babysitter (1970) (DVD)* My Thoughts: Hey they made a sequel! Kind of. Same older guy but this time he is a movie producer hanging out with the kids to get dialogue for his new movie. Totally not to nail the babysitter, ha. And this time his wife is a junkie kidnapped and coerced into testing drugs and have lesbian sex. And while it sounds like a better movie than the first it didn't really capture the same spark. (3.5 out of 5) |
- April 16th - | |
![]() | 30.) Something To Scream About (2003) (DVD)* My Thoughts: An interesting scream queen doc which I might have liked more if I hadn't recently seen Screaming in High Heels which is better in almost every way. Kind of like His Name Was Jason and Crystal Lake Memories. This is much less inclusive than any of those however. It is much lower budget with several actresses that I even didn't know or really even care about. All of that being said, it is still a documentary about scream queens, making low budget horror movies and getting naked. (3.5 out of 5) |
![]() | 31.) Getting Lucky! (1990) (DVD)* My Thoughts: How to ruin your sex comedy; make the teens wait until they get married to have sex, I mean really wtf? By all accounts this movie blew but there was something about the actors that almost saved it for me, almost. A dorky high school boy finds an inept Leprechaun in a beer bottle and uses him to try to get that cheerleader he has been pining over. It was ridiculous, stupid and super low budget. But I do have to mention one scene where the lead gets shrunken down to about the size of an ant and has to climb up a girl through her panties using her pubic hair as a handholds (be aware though that that scene is not nearly as awesome as it sounds). (2.5 out of 5) |
- April 17th - | |
![]() | 32.) Blood Junkie (2010) (DVD)* My Thoughts: Not a bad movie! Ok, well yeah, a bad movie. But for a movie that only cost $6000 and was a period horror movie it was technically very successful. I mean this really feels like a bad 80's horror movie! On a release note this is probably the most recent picture boxed movie I own, although maybe they did that for nostalgia purposes? (3 out of 5) |
- April 18th - | |
![]() | 33.) Copkillers (1973) (DVD)* My Thoughts: Some hippies kill some cops and that flips them over the edge into a From Dusk Till Dawn eek cross country crime spree. Was not into this movie at all, the highlight of it for me was seeing the sound guy sitting in the back seat, very clearly in frame. Aside from that an the rather satisfying ending I found this mostly just tedious. (2 out of 5) |
- April 19th - | |
![]() | 34.) Pink Angels (1972) (DVD)* My Thoughts: Gay bikers! Turning down road chicks, seducing other biker gangs while in drag and generally being flaming bikers was actually a really fun change of pace to the challenge for me. There is this one scene where a it dawns on a hitchhiker they have picked up and he says "Jesus Christ, You're all Faggots!" before high tailing it out of there. But man holy fuck, that ending, what the hell!?!?!?! Even so another high point for the Mill Creek 32 Movie Drive In Collection. (4 out of 5) |
- April 20th - | |
![]() | 35.) 6 Days In Roswell (1998) (DVD)* My Thoughts: So this guy is either really weird or an amazing actor and based on a few tells throughout the movie I am leaning towards the latter. Me and the wife actually went to Roswell in 2008 and it was somewhat disappointing. I was expecting the spectacle that this film delivered on and what we got was a few entertaining bits with an almost deserted downtown that was sporting left over window displays that were made for the 50th anniversary and featured in this movie! But hey at least I finally got to see it, and in the context of this charming movie. Growing up on the X-Files this really hit the spot for me. (4.5 out of 5) My Wife's Thoughts: That guy is so weird. I went Roswell, I could not see like that. I could see only little museum but I guess government hid everything. Good documentary. I wish Demi Moore comment something. (3.5 out of 5) |
![]() | 36.) Foreplay (1975) (DVD)* My Thoughts: I bought this sex comedy anthology primarily for Zero Mostel who I fell for after endearing roll in The Producers. And while you do get some Zero craziness but it's not one of the stronger stories. In fact the whole movie has aged quite badly. Entertaining with some fabulous nudity but not recommendable unless you are a die hard Zero fan. (3 out of 5) |
- April 21st | |
![]() | 37.) Van Nuys Blvd (1979) (DVD)* My Thoughts: I was watching The Pick Up earlier in the challenge and thinking to myself, what did people do before the internet? Apparently they go cursing, have sex and make lasting friendships. I dug this one a lot, it hit that cultural segment excellent and reminded me a lot of American Graffiti. And I think I am going to have to download that title song. Just one thing though, who races vans? I mean really? (4 out of 5) |
![]() | 38.) Pom Pom Girls (1976) (DVD)* My Thoughts: Not quite as good as Van Nuys Blvd but it was a fun teen sex comedy. Lot of good nudity, passible hijink and it also has the lead from Revenge Of The Nerds when he was younger and even weirder looking. And now that van question from earlier is making a lot more sense. Obviously teens can't afford 2 cars so you are either going to have something awesome or something you can get laid in. (3.5 out of 5) |
![]() | 39.) Strike Commander (1987) (DVD)* My Thoughts: The cover of this movie wrote a check that the feature could in no way come close to cashing. If Rambo 2 and the fictional Jack Howitzer Exploader movie had a slightly retarded baby this would be it. Entertaining at times, mind numbingly bad at times I think this movie would have really benefitted from the liberal application of alcohol. But since that was not the case it rang slightly below average with me. It was interesting to finally see one of those Philippines action movies that I occasionally hear about in documentaries on the exploitation genre, I am guessing this pack is full of them. (2.5 out of 5) |
- April 22nd | |
![]() | 40.) Mannigan's Force (1988) (DVD)* My Thoughts: This one I was drunk for but it didn't really help. Lots of shooting and a plot.. of some sort.. maybe... but mostly just shooting. I think I need to take a break from the Mercs grindhouse pack for awhile and get a little pallet cleansing. (2 out of 5) |
![]() | 41.) Malibu Beach (1978) (DVD)* My Thoughts: I am starting to recognize a lot of repeat actors in these Crown International films. Not quite as good as the last two Crown International teen sex comedies but still passably entertaining. It almost feels like a trilogy at this point. I must admit though I mostly found myself waiting for the dog to return. (3 out of 5) |
- April 23rd | |
![]() | 42.) Willie Dynamite (1974) (DVD)* My Thoughts: Classic 70's blaxploitation, next challenge I need to way way up the amount of blaxploitation titles because this challenge started to grate a little bit on me. Although that could be due in large part to the high percentage of Crown International titles. This one was a little more serious than some of the other pimp movies I have seen but it still had tinges of comedy; like calling the white pimp Milky Way or telling a woman that he would rather rape a watermelon. Overall I really enjoyed it and it would have scored a bit higher with me if not for being completely nudity free. A bit of a shame for a movie about pimps and hoes. (4 out of 5) |
- April 24th | |
![]() | 43.) Blue Money (1972) (DVD)* My Thoughts: The axiom about never making a movie about making movies is usually true, unless you are making a movie about making adult movies. After you get over the subject matter though this movie is a bit of a bland melodrama. I wasn't sure if I liked the oddly foreign lead, the nudity lacked... quality and it was extremely by the numbers. Probably why it was one of 32 movies in a set at target for $8. (3 out of 5) |
- April 25th | |
![]() | 44.) Double Exposure (1983) (DVD)* My Thoughts: What the hell? A Crown International movie. And it was good!?!?!? Not De Palma good but still a beyond passable murder mystery killer thriller. And bravo for using a handicapped person, it always add an additional level to these kind of movies making it that much more effective. I think this may be the best movie in the pack so far! (4 out of 5) |
- April 26th | |
![]() | 45.) Seperate Ways (1981) (DVD)* My Thoughts: Not a big Karen Black Fan and here she is again playing an annoying I am woman character that I just don't give a damn about. At least in other movies people are trying to kill her, in this one she is just a a-strained housewife who has a fling and moves out. A waste of time made much more tedious by the presence of Karen Black. (2.5 out of 5) |
- April 27th | |
![]() | 46.) Night Club (1989) (DVD)* My Thoughts: A Jacob's Ladder-esk stream of consciousness mess except without the payoff. Looking at IMDB this appears to be one of Crown International's last movies and one can see why. Super cheaply made, bad actors, near lack of plot. I am giving it half a star bump just because it didn't make me want to topple my tv, and another half star for some great nudity. But for all intensive purposes this should be a skip in everybody's book (unless you know someone that was in the movie). (2 out of 5) |
![]() | 47.) Cheeky! (2000) (DVD)** My Thoughts: A hot Italian chick has various sexcapades, it was great! A bit of shaving could have improved it quite a bit though. (4 out of 5) My Wife's Thoughts: So many boobies, so many peepees, so many lesbians. It was ok but need a little more story. And... ah... ending was ok but it's so strange. So many naked so I can give 3.5 but no story. I need more movie not just naked. Feel like just see the naked people and movie gone. (3.5 out of 5) |
- April 28th | |
![]() | 48.) Spun (2002) (DVD) (Wild Card #1)* My Thoughts: Super dated, dirty meth comedy. Lots of recognizable faces here, most notably for me being the late Britney Murphy. There is just something so likable about her, even when she is playing a meth addicted stripper. This movie is a bit tainted for me however since I once had a druggie acquaintance who was way way into it, like quoting it every day into it. It does provide an entertaining cautionary tale though. (3.5 out of 5) My Wife's Thoughts: I will not understand this movie’s purpose, just so many druggie people. Ending is weird. Britney Murphy is ok job, few famous people. It just doesn’t have any stories. Pick better movie. Latly that two movies sucks. (3 out of 5) |
- April 29th | |
![]() | 49.) Click: The Calendar Girl Killer (1990) (DVD)* My Thoughts: x (x out of 5) |
- April 30th | |
![]() | 50.) Hot Target (1985) (DVD)* My Thoughts: Felt like a made for TV movie. (x out of 5) |
![]() | 51.) Lurkers (1988) (DVD)* My Thoughts: One of the worst movies of the challenge! (x out of 5) |
![]() | 52.) Carnival Of Crime (1962) (DVD)* My Thoughts: Why would Mill Creek choose this to be the last movie in their Drive In megaset? (x out of 5) |

Re: Fifth Annual Drive-in/Exploitation/B-Movie LIST THREAD April 1-30 2014
I'm in. On my website, we have an April in The Asylum theme planned, so we will be watching a nice load of films from The Asylum. No way I'll get anywhere near 100, and I won't even really set a goal for this one, but instead I'll just use this as a fun way to track my B-movie viewing this month.

5th Annual Drive-In/Exploitation/B-Movie Challenge

LAST YEAR: 35 films
THIS YEAR'S PERSONAL GOAL: 50+ films
All films are DVD format unless otherwise noted.
Bold = first-time viewing
* = wildcard selection
- Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry (1974) - From the First Drive-in/Exploitation/B-Movie Challenge:
A shaggy-haired stock car driver and his mechanic (Peter Fonda and Adam Roarke, respectively) take a supermarket manager's family hostage for the market's daily bankroll. They pick up freewheeling groupie Mary Coombs (Susan George) during the getaway. The trio spends the rest of the film evading the police, led by the equally crafty Captain Franklin (Vic Morrow). The film showcases some incredible car stunts coordinated by Al Wyatt, Sr. and his crew. The "Charger vs. Chopper" sequence alone is worth the price of admission. An uncredited Roddy McDowall plays the supermarket manager. Susan George and the abrupt ending are really the two sourest notes that the film hits, but the rest of it is solid entertainment. - The Georgia Peaches (A.K.A., "Follow That Car") (1980)
- Van Nuys Blvd. (1979)
- Supervan (1977) - Come for the vans (including the title van designed by legendary Hollywood customizer George Barris), stay for the completely unexpected cameo by cult author Charles Bukowski!
- Jailbait Babysitter (1977)
- Friend of the Family (1995) - Youtube. Of the softcore erotic thrillers that clogged video store shelves in the '90s, Friend of the Family holds the distinction of not being a thriller at all. In truth, the film is a domestic melodrama in spite of its nudie flick trappings. An affluent middle class family is on the brink of collapse when a sexy free spirit named Elke (January 1992 Penthouse Pet Shauna O'Brien) unexpectedly enters their lives. During her stay, Elke creates an atmosphere conducive to reconciliation by frequently being nude and (separately) sleeping with both the husband and wife (Griffin Drew). She also convinces the slutty daughter (Playboy model Lisa Boyle) that there are ways to find the right man other than being a human mattress and then proceeds to make out with her! Director Edward Holzman, a veteran of multiple Playboy productions, delivers the nudity and simulated sex like clockwork. O'Brien, Boyle and Drew are all in their physical primes, and they aren't afraid to flaunt what they have.
- Night Club (1989) - A hard-drinking writer is stuck in a remote location with his wife and gradually becomes mentally unhinged. Sound familiar? This lame psychological "thriller" is essentially an homage to The Shining without any of Kubrick's visual flair (or a plot, or a budget, or talent, or...). Elizabeth Kaitan pulls double duty as the protagonist's wife as well as his ethereal object of desire.
- Night Eyes Three (1993) - Youtube. When the star of a popular cop show (Shannon Tweed) is assaulted by her deadbeat ex-boyfriend, the show's executive producer insists that the head of Night Eyes Security (Andrew Stevens) personally guard her body. Having learned absolutely nothing from the previous two films, Stevens' character takes the job. Meanwhile, a rival security firm makes a play to steal away Stevens' clients. Can he find happiness with Tweed, protect his business and be a good single father to his daughter? Did anybody in the production point out Shannon Tweed's resemblance to Stella Stevens, Andrew's mother? Also starring Shannon's sister, Tracy Tweed, as her catty television co-star.
Before they were famous: A young Allison Mack (Smallville) plays Stevens' daughter.
- No Contest (1995) - Google Play. Shannon Tweed plays a fading beauty-queen-turned-female-action-star who's hoping to give her career a shot in the arm by hosting a beauty pageant, and the daughter of a U.S. senator just happens to be a contestant. When a gang of criminals led by Andrew Dice Clay hijack the pageant and hold the contestants hostage, it falls upon Tweed to rescue the girls with some help from the bodyguard of the senator's daughter (played by Robert Davi).
I really wanted to like this Canadian Die Hard clone more than I did. Perhaps the biggest stumbling block the film hits is the fact that unlike Bruce Willis' John McClane, Shannon Tweed's character doesn't have much of a body count. The cops and criminals do most of the killing. Even though she has a decent combat sequence with wrestler Roddy Piper, Tweed spends the majority of the film running from conflict. It might be more realistic, but it somehow doesn't make for a particularly thrilling story. A disappointing effort from Paul Lynch, the director of the original Prom Night.
- Top of the World (1997) - On his first night out as a free man, an ex-con (played by Peter Weller) inadvertently gets mixed up in a casino heist. Can he reconcile with his estranged wife (Tia Carrere) without getting them both killed? The film's cast reads like a list of character actor all-stars. In addition to Weller and Carrere, you've got David Alan Grier, Martin Kove, the late Ed Lauter, Cory-Hiroyuki Tagawa, Joe Pantoliano and Peter Coyote. Presiding over this court is none other than Dennis Hopper as the casino's owner!
So what went wrong? For starters, it doesn't help that Hopper, Weller and Carrere are all sleepwalking through their roles. Second, the movie wants to be too many things all at once. It starts out as a heist film that sharply turns into a Die Hard clone, then morphs once again into a buddy cop movie, then returns to Die Hard mode until a continuity-breaking showdown occurs between Weller and Hopper while hanging from the side of Hoover Dam. As a consequent, the movie feels ten minutes too long. There are a couple of automotive stunt sequences that are handled fairly well, but the movie is plagued by too much filler.
- Fifty/Fifty (1992) - From the First Drive-in/Exploitation/B-Movie Challenge:
The CIA hires two wisecracking mercenaries (Peter Weller and Robert Hays) to arm and train a small band of rebels to overthrow the dictator of the fictional island nation of Tengara. When they are sold out by their CIA handler, the pair decide to overthrow the dictator themselves. Take away the squibs, explosions and profanities, and what you have is a Hope/Crosby "Road" movie with Hays in the Hope role and Weller in the Crosby role. It's almost a shame that the duo never does break into song or that Weller doesn't serenade the female lead. Competently directed by Charles Martin Smith.
- Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man (1991) - First time on DVD. Mickey Rourke and Don Johnson play the respective title characters (with no connection to the companies associated with the trademarks, as is made explicitly clear in the opening credits) in this mishmash of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and Easy Rider set in the far flung future of 1996. Harley and Marlboro are bikers who plan an armored truck heist in order to save their beloved watering hole from foreclosure, but the cargo the truck was delivering turns out to be a dangerous new synthetic drug instead of cash. Things go from bad to worse when a pack of killers in bulletproof dusters shows up looking to reclaim the goods. The cast also includes Giancarlo Esposito, the late wrestler Big John Studd, Chelsea Field, Vanessa Williams, Daniel Baldwin, Branscombe Richmond (from TV's Renegade), Tom Sizemore and Robert Ginty (The Exterminator, Exterminator 2)!
The film is possibly more entertaining than it ought to be. It meets the all the basic expectations that a viewer has for an action film, but the film has just enough character to distinguish it from the other video store shelf-filler. I'm especially tickled that the filmmakers thought gasoline prices approaching four dollars and a billboard promoting Die Hard V ("Die Hardest") would make funny sight gags. Directed by Simon Wincer.
Before they were famous: Kelly Hu as a gas station attendant and Tia Carrere (just one year before Wayne's World) as Tom Sizemore's personal assistant
- Joysticks (1983) A trio of guys and their attractive gal-pals (including May 1982 Playmate Kym Malin) attempt to save their beloved arcade from a reactionary pillar of the community (played by Joe Don Baker). Everything rides on a game of Super Pac-Man against the notorious King Vidiot (Jon Gries). Joysticks barely hangs together as a movie, but it remains weirdly watchable as a sort of snapshot of America's all-too-brief love affair with video arcades. Corinne Bohrer puts more effort into playing Baker's valley girl daughter than this movie deserves.
- Picasso Trigger (1988)
- Do or Die (1991) - From the Third Drive-in/Exploitation/B-Movie Challenge:
Not only does Erik Estrada reappear in Do or Die (this time he's wearing a white hat as an Air Force officer), but the film also stars Pat Morita as a Japanese crime lord. In some ways, the presence of these two fading celebrities in the same Andy Sidaris film marks a high point in his popularity (or his notoriety). There are a number of stylish softcore scenes that I daresay show Sidaris reaching for a level of sophistication unseen in his prior films. Unfortunately, the plot and the performances remain characteristically undercooked. - Caged Fury (1990) - It's your typical Hollywood story: a virginal young woman moves from Utah to Los Angeles against her father's wishes to become a star. Through the boyfriend of hitchhiking trailer trash, she gets what she hopes is her big break. Unfortunately, it turns out to be an elaborate frame-up, and both girls are convicted of prostitution! They're sent to the "Honeywell State Prison for Women," where they become the playthings of the lesbian dominatrix warden and the sleazy male prison guards. When the girl's sister winds up falling for the exact same scam, it's up to a motorcyclist (played by Erik Estrada) and a seemingly superhuman kickboxer to free the lingerie-clad inmates! The cast includes a squandered Michael Parks, James Hong and Ron Jeremy(!) in a cameo. In spite of the luridness of the material, there's a strange air of restraint about the film.
- Deathrow Gameshow (1987) - If you've ever watched The Running Man and wished Richard Dawson's character was the hero, then have I got the movie for you (actually, I don't).This abysmal dark comedy follows the host of a game show called "Live or Die" that offers death row prisoners their freedom by playing games of chance. Despite the lovely Debra Lamb going topless during the "Dance of the Seven Boners" and the sight of a clearly embarrassed extra half-heartedly humping a roast turkey, there's not a whole lot of laughs to be had. The film also incorporates footage from Crown International's supernatural thriller The Hearse during a nightmare sequence. You can tell, because those few seconds look superior to anything else in the film.
- The Arena (1974) - The duo from Black Mama, White Mama are back in this entertaining hybrid of the "swords and sandals" film and "women in prison" film. Margaret Markov and Pam Grier play slaves who are forced to fight to the death in gladiatorial games for their Roman overlords. Joe Dante's editing makes it look as though the two femmes fatale can really fight!
- Barbarian Queen (1985) - Lana Clarkson stars in this satisfactory "swords and sorcery" fantasy film. When a band of raiders attacks her village on her wedding day, a woman warrior (Clarkson) goes in search of her kidnapped sister (former jailbait Dawn Dunlap, perhaps most notorious for Laura) and groom-to-be (Z-action star Frank Zagarino). You'll find better sword-fighting in any given episode of Xena: Warrior Princess, and there's a lot of rape on display (including one sequence that's tastelessly played for laughs).
- Deathstalker (1983) - Now this is the movie for which Lana Clarkson should be remembered. The story has the title character go on a quest for a series of mystical items in order to defeat an evil wizard and rescue a kidnapped princess (Barbi Benton), but Clarkson's wardrobe (or lack thereof) is maybe the most striking part of the film. Also among the heroic meathead's traveling companions is a swordsman played by the late Richard Brooker (Friday the 13th Part III's Jason Voorhees).
- Wandering Ginza Butterfly (1972)
- Wandering Ginza Butterfly 2: She-Cat Gambler (1972)
- Sonny Chiba's Dragon Princess (1976) - From the Second Drive-in/Exploitation/B-Movie Challenge:
Despite Sonny Chiba's prominence in the title, he only appears for about twenty minutes in the film. Chiba plays a karate master who is forced to leave Japan after being ambushed by his rival and his rival's cronies. In his years of exile, Chiba trains his daughter Yumi (Etsuko "Sue" Shihomi) to exact revenge on his enemies. Once in Japan, Yumi teams up with a mysterious man (Yasuaki Kurata) to take on her father's rival. It's a pretty boilerplate martial arts movie plot (and perhaps owes some credit to Lady Snowblood), but I prefer this film to Shihomi's better-known "Sister Street Fighter" movies. Shihomi has never looked better than she does in this film.
- No Blade of Grass (1970) - Viewed in observance of Earth Day. After a virus decimates the world's grain supplies and sends a world already weakened by pollution and overpopulation into complete chaos, an architect (Nigel Davenport) leads a group of survivors on a caravan to his brother's potato farm in the northern highlands. Everything reverts to the days of the Wild West once civilization collapes. This is reinforced by the "wagon train" motifs in the film score as well as a standoff with a motorcycle gang. The Naked Prey director Cornel Wilde attempts to shock the audience with flashforward jump cuts and other avant garde gimmickry, but the footage of an actual live childbirth may be the most jarring trick. In addition to Davenport, Anthony May acquits himself very well in the role of the young antihero, Pirrie.
- She (1982) - Youtube.
- Yor, the Hunter from the Future (1983)
- Wild Wild Planet (1965)
- War of the Planets (1966)
- The Snow Devils (1967)
- The Green Slime (1968) - From the Second Drive-in/Exploitation/B-Movie Challenge:
A team of astronauts (led by Robert Horton and Richard Jaeckel) is sent on a mission to drill and plant nuclear charges beneath the surface of an asteroid on a collision course with Earth. While Michael Bay took over two hours to tell the same story, Kinji Fukusaku and company do it in a half-hour. As an added bonus, they give us the story of a space station overrun by rubbery, tentacled aliens. Richard Delvy immortalizes it all in the greatest theme song ever recorded. Luciana Paluzzi has the unenviable task of playing the third point in a love triangle between herself, Horton and Jaeckel. - Track of the Moon Beast (1976)
- The Crater Lake Monster (1977) - From the First Drive-in/Exploitation/B-Movie Challenge:
A meteor falls into Crater Lake, causing a dormant, fertilized plesiosaur egg to hatch. It doesn't take long for the dinosaur to develop a taste for cattle, sightseers and fugitives. Only the courage of the town sheriff (along with the noble sacrifice of a local yokel) proves powerful enough to stop the creature. Stop-motion sequences by David W. Allen momentarily increase the film's production values by eleventy percent, but the sequences only comprise five or ten minutes of the film's total runtime. - Godzilla, King of the Monsters (1956)
