Ah, January. It's cold, there's very little new content in any entertainment field and most football fans have already figured out that their teams are going nowhere. Is there a better time to hibernate on the couch and gorge on TV shows?

Guidelines/Rules

• This challenge begins at Dusk (your time) on New Year's Eve, 31 December 2013, and concludes at Dawn (your time), 1 February 2014.
• Eligible content is anything originally produced for television broadcast, including television series, mini-series, made-for-TV movies and specials (including, but not limited to, stand-up specials and music performances).
• Also eligible are movies that are directly part of the continuity of eligible content. If you are uncertain, please ask in the discussion thread!
• This is not a challenge pitting your final view count against anyone else's. You're fighting your own schedule and capacity for gorging on TV content. You are therefore welcome to count your viewing totals however you wish, as it will only matter to you.
• Remember also that 1 January overlaps with the Holiday Challenge, so if you've got any Holiday-themed TV content you want to squeeze in, it counts for both challenges on that day.
• * The emphasis of this challenge should be to explore the impact that the DVD format has had on how we view TV content, but you are not restricted to the DVD format. You may watch your content on VHS, Blu-ray, over-the-air broadcast, digital download, online streaming; whatever format suits you.

One friend doesn't believe in actually listening to a TV so I'd be lying if I said I had anything much to say about any of the performances or hosts, but we did follow along with their countdown of the "30 Greatest Women" in music. We were surprised by some of the ones who made the cut, and even more stunned by the ones we thought for sure would have. Plus, we all had Madonna being #1 (she ranked fifth). I can't think of any measuring stick by which Madonna's resume doesn't eclipse just about anyone else's, but with my friend's inability to shut up, I have no way of knowing what explanations were really given for the list as a whole or any of the thirty women who made it. "Indeed. You have found him, Captain Picard." That exchange remains one of the most exciting moments in the entire Star Trek canon. I can't even be sure the last time I saw either part of "Unification", but it thrilled me as an adolescent. I read the novelization penned by Jeri Taylor (who wrote the Part I teleplay). I bought the TNG Volume Three CD, featuring a suite of Dennis McCarthy's music from the two episodes. I was thrilled when Playmates added an Ambassador Spock action figure to their lineup, and when he appeared in Decipher's Star Trek CCG. In short, I've been borderline obsessed with "Unification" for 22+ years. At present, the full season sets on Blu-ray are outside my limited entertainment budget, but I was kindly given some Amazon credit by a friend and splurged on this release. I know I'm behind the times, but this was my first TNG in HD (outside of the movies) and I was quite impressed with the A/V quality. I was captivated just taking in the richness of the textures of costumes and sets. The lone exception is that the Vulcan ear points on Mark Lenard are embarrassingly off-color from the actor's own skin tone. I never noticed it in SD, but it's distracting here. His scene with Patrick Stewart is so poignant and heartrending, though, that I feel guilty even remarking on such a trivial thing. It remains one of the most affecting scenes in the series. As for the bonus content, I confess to being disappointed. Though I didn't expect anything particularly revelatory, there isn't much here that adds to the appreciation of the featured episodes. Also, CBS decided not to include an UltraViolet Digital Copy for this title, as they had done with the similar standalone Blu-ray releases for "The Best of Both Worlds" and "Redemption". Commentary by Jeri Taylor and Mike & Denise Okuda *** This one is a mixed bag. When Jeri Taylor shares anecdotes from either "Unification" or Star Trek at large, she's engaging and interesting. The highlight for me was hearing Taylor acknowledge that Sarek's reference to Spock going off into the mountains was, in fact, a direct reference to "Yesteryear", an episode of the animated series. The Okudas, however, interject with remarks and questions more along the lines of minutiae. It comes off as a Q&A conducted on a fan made podcast. Since Taylor doesn't appear in the lone making-of featurette, though, it's your only chance to hear her reminisces. From One Generation to the Next: The Making of "Unification" (16:43) *** In fairness to the producers, it's difficult to make a making-of featurette without any of the key principles participating. Jeri Taylor only recorded the commentary, Michael Piller (who wrote the second half) passed away several years ago, as did actor Mark Lenard, and apparently, Leonard Nimoy passed outright on anything to do with this release. Instead, we hear more about the road that led from the original series through the TNG episode "Sarek" to "Unification" - which, thankfully, is actually relevant and interesting, even if it feels off-topic. Deleted Scene (1:43) *** This one kind of baffles me. It's a throwaway scene, to be sure, but it's clearly completed, rather than rough footage that was jettisoned early. I can understand excising it from the broadcast episode, but it seems to me that this single cut Blu-ray would have been an appropriate place to reinsert it as originally planned, though of course, no one asked me. Episodic Promo: "Unification I" (0:34) *** Episodic Promo: "Unification II" (0:34) *** Pretty basic TV promos, but that second one, touting "one man sacrifices his life" is entirely and unnecessarily misleading. Conclusion Though the bonus content is generic and the second half of the story - the part that actually includes Nimoy as Spock - feels rushed and anticlimactic, the first half is genuinely terrific. "Unification" has taken on a new place in the context of the franchise in the wake of the last two movies. I can't in all honesty call this a mandatory purchase for Trekkers with the money to buy the TNG Season Five Blu-ray set, but for me...I have no regrets. Star Trek 25th Anniversary Special 1/1 Special | View Time: 1:32:00/92 minutes 1/24 Star Trek 25th Anniversary Special (1:32:00) **** Review Spoiler: I don't even remember the last time I watched this tape; it's probably been twenty years, maybe even longer. But when it first came out, I watched it "more than once", we'll say, to the point that I *may* have talked along with the promos that played at the beginning, advertising the first five movies, TNG and TOS on VHS, and Star Trek: The Astral Symphony, a compilation of music from the first five movies. I didn't talk along with the special itself, but it was surprising to me just how vividly I recalled most of it, even anticipating which interviewee would appear next, and what he or she would discuss. As I've discussed often, I became a fan of the franchise during its 25th anniversary year (1991), having been almost entirely oblivious to Star Trek until then. I knew virtually nothing about it until I decided to explore it after being captivated by the teaser poster for The Undiscovered Country. I had already gotten caught up on everything by the time 25th Anniversary Special aired, but it was still instrumental in helping me establish a baseline for understanding just what it was that I had gotten into. It also established the paradigm for what I would come to expect from such a special. In quick succession, the special places the birth of the franchise in the context of the space race and social climate of the Sixties, chronicles the production of the original series through its cancellation, skips past the animated series entirely, and onto the movies. Another segment focuses on TNG, including a breakdown of how a composite image of the Enterprise-D was made using different layers of imaging (one of my earliest whiffs of behind-the-scenes/making-of stuff that I have come to absolutely love). There's a montage of prolific Star Trek parodies from over the years, a survey of fandom and the rise of conventions, and a segment previewing The Undiscovered Country. Star Trek 25th Anniversary Special, despite its inclusion about TNG, is by and large a special about TOS rather than the franchise. One could realistically call it "The Roddenberry Years", since The Great Bird of the Galaxy passed away just before the special aired. There is a segment briefly introducing Roddenberry and his background in the military and TV at the beginning, but it isn't presented in the context of a memorial; just as part of the genesis of Star Trek. No comment is made of his passing until on-screen text appears just before the end credits play noting his years of birth and death. TNG is covered, but discussion of it is confined to establishing it as TOS's kid brother. It doesn't appear any effort was made to conduct new interviews for this special. Patrick Stewart, for instance, appears on the battle bridge set, in his first season costume, indicating that it was filmed around the time the series first went into production. It's interesting to go back to a time when the franchise was still defined by TOS, and TNG was still outside the mainstream consciousness (despite its high ratings)...and the rest of the spin-offs were still in the offing. The most prolific commentator is Whoopi Goldberg - who says as much about TOS as she does about TNG! Marina Sirtis and Brent Spiner don't appear at all, nor is there any mention whatsoever of "The Best of Both Worlds", or even of "Sarek". LeVar Burton visits Space Camp in a segment licensed from Reading Rainbow (he clearly uses his RR speaking voice). If I had to register one surprise, it's that the TNG guest appearance by Leonard Nimoy in "Unification" (which I watched on Blu-ray at the outset of this challenge) goes unacknowledged in the special. Both aired right around the same time, as lead-ins to the release of The Undiscovered Country. Later, I would acquire two other behind-the-scenes specials on VHS: From "Star Wars" to "Jedi": The Making of a Saga and The Making of "Jurassic Park". Along with Star Trek 25th Anniversary Special, those two formed the basis of my entire fascination with such content. They're why I actually watch DVD bonus content today, and they're the gold standards by which I judge such fare. Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country 1/1 Movie | View Time: 1:53:14 1/27 Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country Review, from my Letterboxd diary: Spoiler: Last July, a pal and I committed ourselves to touring through the Kirk/Spock era of Star Trek in its entirety, starting with the original series, through the animated series, and onto the movies. We meant to get to The Undiscovered Country months ago, but for one reason or another, it didn't happen until around midnight last night. It may not have been grouped with the other five last year, but I adore that it's my first movie viewing of 2014. I last watched this in 2011, and I don't even care to guess which number viewing this one makes. My viewing pal hadn't seen it in quite some time and didn't remember it very well, so this time around, I found myself reflecting on it more in the context of her observations and criticisms. One of her points of contention is that the anti-Klingon racism is so heavy handed throughout the film. It isn't subtle, I'll grant you, but I also think it's important that it not be. One of the chief gripes about Gene Roddenberry's vision for the future is that things involving humanity are simply too peachy keen. I appreciated seeing the divided factions, one side willing to work in good faith to secure a peaceful future; the other, so steeped in fear and suspicion that they somewhat ironically ally themselves with like-minded Klingon conspirators to quash peace talks. I've always identified strongly with storytelling that highlights how people can be on the same side as people from an opposing affiliation, and how being part of the same affiliation may not mean people are united. It's also daring, really, that after 25 years of being our heroic leader, that it would be Captain Kirk to personify the poison of prejudice. William Shatner gives a terrific performance throughout, from lashing out at Spock for volunteering the Enterprise's involvement, his obviously forced civility as dinner host, through to his epiphany and breakthrough at the end. There are a lot of stars who would refuse a role where the hero is so flawed, and I don't know that I ever really gave Shatner credit for what he did here. Upon reflection, I think this might be what sets The Undiscovered Country apart from the other movies in the series for me. There's a certain willingness to get its hands dirty that we've rarely seen within the franchise (at least, outside of Deep Space Nine). Until this movie, there was lots of nice talk about peacefulness and tolerance, etc., but we hadn't seen that really put to a test. This was really the first time that Star Trek showed us how it would walk the walk that went with all its talk. Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country was re-ranked on my Flickchart to #10/1610

I quit watching [adult swim] altogether several years ago, but I was (more or less) a first generation viewer of that bloc so it was nice to revisit its roots. I'm hardly offended by language in general (anyone who has ever conversed with my casually can attest to that!), but it was almost refreshing to see humor written within such strict confines. There wasn't a single "damn" or "hell" to be heard, whereas even just the promos for today's [adult swim] shows feature stronger language. Here's my breakdown by quality: ***** 2 ("Story Book House" and "Fire Drill") **** 3 ("Gilligan", "Batmantis" and "Jerk") *** 8 ("CHiPs", "Bobcat", "Punch", "Banjo", "Girlie Show", "Hungry", "Urges", and "Explode") ** 3 ("Elevator", "Spanish Translation", "Sleeper") "Elevator" was the first episode produced, and "Spanish Translation" was the first to air/third produced/second on the DVD, so maybe I was harsher on those two because I was expecting more. It's hard to say. "Sleeper", featuring Hulk Hogan, is just dull. The two big gems, though, are "Story Book House" and "Fire Drill". In the former, two previous episodes ("Banjo" and "Batmantis") are read to us by Kirk the Storyteller while Carl the Cartoonist dashes off quick sketches. I dig concepts like that, and it was one of the things this show did really well. (My favorite episode probably remains "Table Read", in which the voice cast and writers rehearse the episode, "Fire Ant". It's not included in Volume One.) "Fire Drill" isn't a high concept episode; it's just Space Ghost trolling Donny Osmond, and it's hilarious. There are five commentary tracks. None are particularly great, but only one was disappointing ("Elevator"). There are also two Christmas-themed music clips, one on each disc; the Council of Doom performs, uh, their version of "Twelve Days of Christmas" in an Easter egg on Disc One, and Zorak and the Original Way Outs perform "Jingle Bells" on Disc Two. I'd be lying if I said that Space Ghost Coast to Coast was the most satisfying thing I've watched in awhile, but I can say that, on the whole, this collection held up a lot better for me than did Aqua Teen Hunger Force when I revisited it in August. Dollar well spent!

(The other reason being that these are presently the only two seasons I own and I wanted to space out my viewings.) Thankfully, Season Two felt a lot more comfortable for me to revisit. I've finally started to feel like it's one of *my* favorite shows instead of "one of 'our' shows". (No one ever talks about the custody of TV shows when marriages collapse. I should write a book about this.) I found every episode to be at least worthy of three stars, though it was concerning since the first three episodes fell on that tier. I worried that maybe the show wasn't going to hold up, or that I couldn't find an "in" to it on my own, but then came "Comrades" to finish off Disc 1. Disc 2 was wall-to-wall greatness, including "Double Booked", which remains one of my favorite episodes of the series. (The commentary track for that episode is hilarious, and an instant addition to my favorite TV show episode commentaries list.) My chief problem with Burn Notice has always been that it's prone to moments where it just feels and sounds like a TV show playing at being a show about spies instead of being a show about spies. There are an awful lot of things like "Remember what we did in [foreign city]?" coded language bits that take me out of the moment. Sometimes their more ambitious episodes expose the limitations of their TV budget, but it's nice to see that kind of effort. (I'm fine with how formulaic the show is, in part because there are enough episodes that play with the formula to keep things interesting.) The most consistently cringe-worthy character is Gabrielle Anwar's Fiona, who talks about being a hothead a lot more than she really acts as one. It's a bit like being around someone who waxes nostalgic about their glory days when drinking, talking up who they used to be instead of being who they are today. In Season Two, though, they finally hit on something fun for Anwar to do, and that's to spar with Bruce Campbell's Sam Axe. Some of the most entertaining scenes in the whole season feature the two of them sniping at one another, and that chemistry works really well. In the end, what I really want out of any given episode of Burn Notice is to watch the camaraderie, and to see some old school Good Guys Win storytelling. It's not a gritty show, and that's actually one of the things I dig about it, but I gotta say one of the best episodes is "Truth and Reconciliation", in which the team works to expose a Haitian fugitive wanted for lots of human rights violations. I think we all want to have some reason to believe that somewhere out there in the world, there really are people going to great lengths to address serious wrongs. That's the real power of TV and movies; with enough verisimilitude, they can inspire or reinforce those wishes, and when Burn Notice really focuses, it does that as well as any show or movie I've seen. I know these are sanitized, formulaic TV versions of those people, but if they exist as sanitized, formulaic TV versions, then that means there are real people out there to whom they correspond. I like that idea. I like it a lot.

The familiar bits are all there, but these episodes have a noticeably different flavor than their predecessors. The conflict between the rebellion and the Horde, for instance, plays as more of a rivalry than the struggle for liberation that it clearly was in the first season. There's a less pervasive sense of oppression, even though the Horde still picks on poor farming villages from time to time. It's also easy to see the influence of external pressures on the show to engage viewers my age at the time. For one thing, we see He-Man several times throughout this season. There's even one episode ("Shades of Orko") in which Man-at-Arms and Orko appear, without He-Man, which is interesting and actually a more fun crossover dynamic. In He-Man's final appearance, "Assault on the Hive", we're also introduced to the Dinosorbs in what is one of the clumsiest product spotlight bits I've seen - and that's in a TV show that was essentially conceived as a massive toy commercial! The most satisfying episode is "Sweet Bee's Home", in which Frosta unsuccessfully tries to catch He-Man's eye...while he, in turn, gets nowhere with Sweet Bee. The humor is well handled, particularly one bit in which Frosta, her back to him, mocks the flirting He-Man. She mouths his words and shifts her head all snotty, and it's hilarious. Even though the awkwardness of unrequited attraction is a fairly thin gag to stretch over an entire story, it works here I think in large part because they really didn't do much in the way of romance stories on the show. In that way, it's a reminder how focused the rest of the series was on avoiding those cliches about stories about lead female characters. To that end, I have to say I was both pleased and disappointed by the final appearance of She-Ra's love interest, Sea Hawk, in "The Locket". The relationship between Adora/She-Ra and Sea Hawk plays as much more platonic this time, which does work to reflect a sort of growth on their part, but just the same it feels as though in the effort to keep all the mushy stuff out of the show, they quashed what had been an interesting dynamic to the character. Moreover, though, there's a great moment in that episode when Adora is about to turn into She-Ra, but the Horde robots actually get the drop on her and shoot her sword right out of her hand! It caught me by surprise, but then no one bats an eye that she's carrying She-Ra's sword. She even claims it as her own! She later brandishes the sword openly as Adora in the penultimate episode, "The Bibbet Story". Bow is probably qualified to work at the Daily Planet. Thematically, Season Two emphasized being part of a family/team/group and accepting others for themselves, both usually tempered with a lesson in humility. There's more of a conservative bent, though, than the more liberal first season. The first episode on the set, "One to Count On", feels incongruous with the rest of the series. It's a message about self-reliance, in which She-Ra tries to break Bow and the others from constantly expecting her to rush to their aid...which, of course, she does anyway because that's the nature of the character and the show. Not a bad lesson, but poorly handled and undermined by the rest of the series by every time someone remarks how they knew She-Ra would show up. Similarly, two of the final episodes feature pacifist guest characters who are being taught that sometimes they have to fight. At least in the second, "The Bibbet Story", She-Ra defends the right of people to choose not to fight. The other unfortunate blemish is that there are two people of color in this season; Netossa, a naive young woman who joins the rebellion (she's cool), but the other is one of Horde Prime's underlings, Inspector Darkney. Yes, "Darkney". I don't know who thought up that name and character design, but I just kinda stared when he came into the show: Spoiler:

I understand why they do that for each week's broadcast, but it's something that's just obnoxious to sit through on DVD. Listening to the episodic commentary tracks discuss all the stuff that was cut to squeeze into the allotted airtime only reinforces my contempt for recaps, which clearly ate into storytelling time. Also, I had not actually seen all of these episodes before watching the season on DVD. I caught some of them when they originally aired, but I missed about half of the season during its broadcast. Ergo, some of this was familiar to me but there was still a lot for me to view for the first time. Going into this season, the writers were blindsided by losing Laura Allen (Lily) from the cast, and Billy Campbell (Jordan Collier) took off for a thirteen month sailing trip around the world. Narrative-wise, the writers handled their losses well, but there's no denying that the tone of the show suffered without Allen's effervescent smile imbuing it with warmth. Campbell's return for the final episodes is exciting, and I suppose my only real question is whether we would have found it more interesting for there to have been discussions about Collier throughout the season to keep us missing him. There are times throughout the season when it feels as though too much A-story time is being spent on little things that aren't particularly relevant vis a vis the overarching storyline, but I'll give Ira Steven Behr credit for pulling things together in the end and paying off just about everything. I came to expect that kind of weaving together of things after seven seasons of Deep Space Nine, and knowing that storytelling approach would be part of The 4400 was what drew me to this show in the first place. As I've said previously, my chief complaint about the show is that sometimes the scale is awfully small. The key characters are so interconnected with events that it can feel contrived. It's good that they got away from the "freak of the week" style of storytelling, but a few times throughout this season I found myself balking at the very idea that Tom Baldwin (Joel Gretsch) and/or Diana Skouris (Jacqueline McKenzie) would even be allowed near a specific case, much less turned loose without Nina Jarvis (Samantha Ferris) peering over their shoulders every three minutes. Where the show excels is in keeping its focus on the idea that these are stories about people. The best example is the two-parter, "Gone", in which Maia (Conchita Campbell) and a few other 4400 kids are abducted...and erased from the present. The relationship between Diana and Maia is one of the best things about the show, and nowhere is it better showcased. I tip my hat to Jacqueline McKenzie for her performances in those two episodes. The procedural stories are well constructed, but it's how they affect Tom and Diana that make them engaging. They confront some serious subjects throughout this season; everything from interrogation techniques (including forms of torture, such as water boarding) to matters of dishonesty in romantic relationships. Individual characters at times moralize and sermonize, but the show as a whole refrains from passing judgment. The personification of all that is in Dennis Ryland (Peter Coyote), who advances his agenda of combating the 4400 throughout the season. Even when our p.o.v. character Tom is entirely at odds with Ryland, it doesn't quite feel that he's an actual villain for the series. His methods may be underhanded and dirty, but when he presents his arguments, they're always rooted in enough reason that it's hard to say he's on the wrong side of things. When I finished with Disc One, I actually wasn't feeling much enthusiasm for this season, but Disc 2 was captivating (it opens with "Gone"). I wound up watching the final half of the season all in one setting while snowed in on Tuesday, but in truth it could have been 74° and sunny; I was so caught up in The 4400 that all I cared about was starting the next episode. Regarding the DVD release, the bonus content is generous by TV release standards, though it's all fairly typical, generic fare. Five of the twelve episodes feature a commentary track. Series co-creator Scott Peters is joined by Gretsch and McKenzie on two, and executive producer/writer Ira Steven Behr is solo for three. I preferred the two by Peters, Gretsch and McKenzie just because they were much livelier. McKenzie and Gretcsh start humming along with the opening credits song during their commentary on "The Ballad of Kevin and Tess", while Peters tries to stay focused on whatever it is he's talking about. For some reason, the special features are all presented in non-anamorphic widescreen. This consists of "The Architecture of Series Storytelling" (21:07), in which writers and actors chime in about how the show balances its cast of characters and weaves its various threads; "Powers Grid" (4:39), an overview about how the writers concoct and develop the various 4400 abilities; "TVFX" (12:50), in which the CGI work of the show is discussed, including some breakdowns of specific elements; "Character Tree", a collection of 1-2 minute blurbs about the key characters; "The 4400 Gag Reel" (8:21), self-explanatory; and "Being Tom Baldwin": The First Draft (.pdf). "TVFX" is kind of interesting, but basically once they've dissected one CGI shot, the rest of the nearly thirteen minutes feel pretty repetitive. In his commentary tracks, Ira Steven Behr damns some of the CGI work with faint praise, which more or less undermines that entire featurette. By far, the highlight is the original draft of "Being Tom Baldwin". I really enjoyed reading that teleplay and I wish that had been the episode they made. Not only would it have brought some lightheartedness to the season, but I found myself really wishing that Richard and Isabelle had had the kind of scenes that were in that first draft. If you're only kinda sorta interested in special features, I'd recommend the "Gone (Part 2)" commentary, the gag reel, and reading the "Being Tom Baldwin" first draft. The rest can be comfortably skipped, though only the Character Tree felt like an actual waste of time.
	Batgirl 1/1 Episodes | View Time: 7:25/8 minutes Episode 1/23 "Pilot" (7:25) Review Spoiler: YES. All kinds of yes. I love me some Batgirl, and even through the low video quality of the YouTube upload, I was still thrilled to see Yvonne Craig in the role. Unlike most pilots, they didn't need to produce a full episode to convey the idea of what a Batgirl series would be like; all they really needed was to establish that Craig held the screen well in the role, set against the same Gotham City as Batman. It's a shame they didn't go all out, not because it would have made any difference in 1967, but because then I'd have more to watch today. Adam West was opposed to the inclusion of the character in Batman, and some of that comes through in his performance here (Burt Ward sleepwalks through the whole thing). I really enjoyed the brief phone call between Barbara and her dad, Police Commissioner James Gordon (Neil Hamilton), and I can't help but wonder how much fun it would have been to have seen their relationship develop throughout a Batgirl series. Being instead squeezed into the shortened Batman third season, there really wasn't much time to devote to such things. A shame, that.

Henry Flatt" (49:14) *** 2/01 "Southern Comfurts" (49:13) *** 2/01 Extreme Hazzard (32:54) *** Review Spoiler: *whew!* You wouldn't think watching 23 episodes of The Dukes of Hazzard in 48 hours would be all that demanding, but I can already tell it'll be at least a day or so before I begin the Oscar Challenge 'cause I need to sort of reset my brain. In the past, I've shied away from starting something that long near the end of the challenge. Turns out, I knew what I was doin'. I love the show, but that much of it in concentration is numbing. It didn't help, I'm sure, that the second season was victim of some growing pains; actors Ben Jones (Cooter) and James Best (Sheriff Rosco Coltrane) both walked out at different points, over different matters, missing a combined - and not concurrent - nine of these twenty-three episodes. The DVD presents this season in airdate, not production, order, which has the effect of showing the effort that CBS went to in order to downplay their absences. It also messes with the continuity, since Daisy's car is destroyed and replaced by her Jeep, Dixie, in S2E14 "The Runaway", whereas it appears again in S2E18 "Find Loretta Lynn". Clearly "Find Loretta Lynn" was withheld to plug into the schedule for sweeps (it aired 8 February 1980), but the move also inserted James Best back into the series in the middle of four of the five episodes shot without him. It's Best that I most missed, and re-watching this season the way that I did made inarguable how vital he was to the show. Jeff Altman (debuting as Hughie Hogg), Clifton James, Dick Sargent (in two appearances, credited in the main titles, no less), and James Hampton all subbed for him, and none of them fit properly. Ben Jones's substitutes (Mickey Jones and Ernie Lively, credited as Ernie W. Brown) didn't have his presence, either, but somehow they didn't disrupt the balance of the show the way Best's subs did. The other oddity about this season is that there were two backdoor pilot episodes: "Jude Emery", a Texas ranger, and "Mason Dixon's Girls", a trio of P.I.'s. Both episodes are quite clearly exactly what they were, and yet I have to say that I enjoyed them more than a lot of the other episodes here, perhaps in part because they broke from the formula. I can understand why CBS passed on developing either as a series, but I do kinda wish they'd brought back those characters once in awhile. They were fun. Thematically, there are some episodes that reflect challenges to gender norms of 35 years ago (particularly "People's Choice" and "Officer Daisy Duke"), but there are also at least a few wince-worthy moments in every episode. Perhaps the best in this respect was "The Runaway", about an oil tycoon's runaway adult daughter determined to elope with her working class, farmer lover deemed inadequate by her money-minded father. I appreciated that the Dukes sided with the daughter, respecting her right to pursue whatever relationship she wished, though an argument could be made that, for Uncle Jesse at least, it was more about winning a fight in the class war than it was about sticking up for the runaway's rights as a woman. Bonus content is extremely light on this set. There's some footage of John Schneider and Tom Wopat's screen tests (3:55) that's kind of entertaining, and a brief doc, "Extreme Hazzard" (32:54) that covers Dukesfest circa 2004 or 2005. It's typical fare for what you'd expect from it, with the caveat that for some reason, it's annoyingly presented in non-anamorphic widescreen.

I get a kick out of the dire news she gives the clients at the end of the show.
