The Office, once I got to the second season turned out to be way funnier that I thought it would be. I ended up blowing through the first seasons of Weeds and Grey's Anatomy, both of which I hadn't even considered as possibly enjoying. Oh, and Big Love. I was getting the DVDs from Netflix, so I only managed about half the first season. But that definitely sucked me in.

As for episodes, nothing will stand out more, EVER, than today's episode of Maury. I'm not a daytime TV viewer, but the other day a friend said I should check out today's episode. OMG (it really does deserve the whole Oh Emm Gee) it was my brother in law, his new girlfriend, and a lie detector test. It was so tragically comical that I'm still not over it. I may never be.

After work, I went out with a friend for sushi and catchup so didn't have much time for television today. Did watch Part XI of The Story of Film: An Odyssey and an episode of Kim Possible.

All-in-all, it was a great month of television. Just like BobO'Link, I enjoyed everything I watched (didn't catch the British Invasion special). My favorite of the month was definitely Twin Peaks, a brilliant series. Also, I cannot wait to finish The Adventures of Brisco County Jr.. I'm beginning to realize that the early and mid 90s were full of great cancelled-to-soon shows. Would add the underrated Earth 2 to the list as well. May have to revisit it for the sci-fi challenge.

With just 3 minutes left before the end of the challenge, I reached 250! Pretty proud of that number, it's an improvement over last years by over 50, so I'm pretty pleased. I didn't complete my main goal, but I did work on it and got a couple of series of "Red Dwarf" completed. I got quite a bit of Bones watched and some random things as well. Just never settled down into one show or series this month. Oh well, there's always next year!

My thoughts on The Dukes of Hazzard The Complete Second Season:

Spoiler:
*whew!* You wouldn't think watching 23 episodes of The Dukes of Hazzard in 48 hours would be all that demanding, but I can already tell it'll be at least a day or so before I begin the Oscar Challenge 'cause I need to sort of reset my brain. In the past, I've shied away from starting something that long near the end of the challenge. Turns out, I knew what I was doin'. I love the show, but that much of it in concentration is numbing.

It didn't help, I'm sure, that the second season was victim of some growing pains; actors Ben Jones (Cooter) and James Best (Sheriff Rosco Coltrane) both walked out at different points, over different matters, missing a combined - and not concurrent - nine of these twenty-three episodes. The DVD presents this season in airdate, not production, order, which has the effect of showing the effort that CBS went to in order to downplay their absences. It also messes with the continuity, since Daisy's car is destroyed and replaced by her Jeep, Dixie, in S2E14 "The Runaway", whereas it appears again in S2E18 "Find Loretta Lynn". Clearly "Find Loretta Lynn" was withheld to plug into the schedule for sweeps (it aired 8 February 1980), but the move also inserted James Best back into the series in the middle of four of the five episodes shot without him.

It's Best that I most missed, and re-watching this season the way that I did made inarguable how vital he was to the show. Jeff Altman (debuting as Hughie Hogg), Clifton James, Dick Sargent (in two appearances, credited in the main titles, no less), and James Hampton all subbed for him, and none of them fit properly. Ben Jones's substitutes (Mickey Jones and Ernie Lively, credited as Ernie W. Brown) didn't have his presence, either, but somehow they didn't disrupt the balance of the show the way Best's subs did.

The other oddity about this season is that there were two backdoor pilot episodes: "Jude Emery", a Texas ranger, and "Mason Dixon's Girls", a trio of P.I.'s. Both episodes are quite clearly exactly what they were, and yet I have to say that I enjoyed them more than a lot of the other episodes here, perhaps in part because they broke from the formula. I can understand why CBS passed on developing either as a series, but I do kinda wish they'd brought back those characters once in awhile. They were fun.

Thematically, there are some episodes that reflect challenges to gender norms of 35 years ago (particularly "People's Choice" and "Officer Daisy Duke"), but there are also at least a few wince-worthy moments in every episode. Perhaps the best in this respect was "The Runaway", about an oil tycoon's runaway adult daughter determined to elope with her working class, farmer lover deemed inadequate by her money-minded father. I appreciated that the Dukes sided with the daughter, respecting her right to pursue whatever relationship she wished, though an argument could be made that, for Uncle Jesse at least, it was more about winning a fight in the class war than it was about sticking up for the runaway's rights as a woman.

Bonus content is extremely light on this set. There's some footage of John Schneider and Tom Wopat's screen tests (3:55) that's kind of entertaining, and a brief doc, "Extreme Hazzard" (32:54) that covers Dukesfest circa 2004 or 2005. It's typical fare for what you'd expect from it, with the caveat that for some reason, it's annoyingly presented in non-anamorphic widescreen.

I wish I could have gotten in more, but I've been fighting depression off and on all month. My heart just wasn't as into it as it has been in the past. I'll update and finalize my list sometime tonight.

Re: TV on DVD* Challenge - Season Four Discussion Thread

I needed to squeeze in something for the Chinese New Year, so I pulled out my box set of the only Chinese (Hong Kong) TV series I have, "Legend of the Condor Heroes" (1983) and watched ep. #2 (I'd watched ep. #1 during last year's challenge). There are 59 eps. in the series and I watched a bunch back in 2008 but only got about a third of the way through. It's a great historical/martial arts series based on a famous book that was turned into numerous film versions and I need to see the whole thing. It was produced by TVB, the TV arm of Shaw Bros., the founder of which, Sir Run Run Shaw, died earlier in January at the ripe age of 106!

Then, before going to bed last night, I watched two more eps. of "My Friend Flicka" (1955) on DVD, a set I only just received on Thursday. What a great show that is and one of the very first TV series to be shot entirely in color. (I believe "The Cisco Kid," which I also watched for this challenge, was the very first.) Looks like I'll be watching more TV eps. in Feb. instead of Academy Award viewing.

Likewise.

I watched complete seasons' of Sherlock (UK Series 2) and Whitechapel (UK Series 1 and 2), the complete series-to-date of Alpha House and all of Out of Practice, Veronica Mars and - just finished - Superman: The Animated Series.

Because of all that, I missed a couple of checklist items... but I did get to watch a cooking show. I've been wanting (casually) to see an episode of Iron Chef America because I knew that Mark Dacascos was in it, and I like him. Turns out he's the 'host'... by which they mean "does a backflip, looks mildly menacing and says about three words during his minute-odd screentime." Weird. Not sure why he's there, but it's always nice to see him.

I also finally buckled down and tracked the second half of the Martial Law (WHY ISN'T IT ON DVD?!) / Walker, Texas Ranger two-parter. Martial Law is great. Walker... it's entertaining, but mostly (to me) for the 'car crash TV' reasons, because none of the them seem to be putting much emotion into their performances. It was particularly amusing to watch the Martial Law part again and see Gretchen Egolf (hurray!), Kelly Hu (hurrah!) and Arsenio Hall all doing a great job, then Sammo - muddling his way through the English script and looking a bit lost - suddenly being eclipsed by Chuck Norris pretending he's an actor. The mildly torturous script tried desperately to give the guest star something to do, and mostly succeeded inn ML (for Walker), and mostly failed in WTR (for Sammo). I enjoyed it, though, for the 'guest star/crossover/stunt/event' part of the checklist.

Great fun, as usual, and I'm pleased I've finally seen Veronica Mars and Superman: TAS. And more pleased that I enjoyed them both as much as I'd assumed I would. Neither ended too well, but the cliffhanger in VM wasn't awful. The end of Superman made me a bit annoyed, though -

Spoiler:
To finish a Superman series not only with an un-Superman 'mind control turns him into a murderer' plotline, but with him left at the end as a figure of hate and fear... not good. :(

Can't remember if I have Earth 2, although I did/do have one of the novel(isation)s somewhere, but I know that somewhere I have Twin Peaks and Brisco County lying in a pile somewhere. Both are eagerly anticipated. :)

Re: TV on DVD* Challenge - Season Four Discussion Thread

I ended up logging 154 episodes this month which seems like a pretty good number to me. Of that number, 61 episodes were live tv or on dvr and 16 were streaming weekly episodes of shows I regularly watch online. I watched 52 episodes on DVD and 25 on blu-ray from my disc backlog of stuff to watch. Oddly enough this gives me a total of 77 regular airing shows and 77 disc shows for a perfect balance between old and new. That wasn't by design, but it is an interesting coincidence.

As far as seasons I watched on disc, I finished Millennium Season 1 on DVD, Get A Life Season 1 on DVD, House of Lies Season 2 on DVD, Spartacus Season 1 on blu-ray, and Blood-C on blu-ray.

Get A Life was a rewatch after many years of having not seen it, but remains one of my favorite comedy series ever, if not my favorite. It was a blast and still held up for me. Millennium was a blast to finally watch the first season in its entirety since this was a show I didn't get into until its last season since I usually worked when it was airing. House of Lies continued to amuse me and keep me interested after I had really enjoyed the first season last year. Blood-C was a bit of a turd as it never really drew me in. Overall, I have enjoyed every other incarnation of Blood a lot more than this one. I do still have to eventually watch the follow-up movie to see if that provides a decent closure to this chapter of the story though. Spartacus was pretty amazing. I look forward to digging into the prequel series and then the final two seasons in the coming months.

I loved The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. during its original run and still do! It's yet another example of how Fox didn't understand what they had and cancelled too soon.

If you're a fan of Campbell and have not seen Jack of All Trades you should seek out some episodes to view - or just buy the series on DVD. It was produced by Renaissance Pictures in 2000 and came out on the heels of Xena and Hercules. It ran for 2 short seasons - 22 half-hour episodes altogether. It really needed to be hour length episides as those half hours often felt rushed. It was sold as part of a double-bill (the Back-to-Back Action Hour) with Cleopatra 2525 (which actually lasted *slightly* longer and went to full hour episodes for the last few).

I got *very* upset at NBC over the treatment given Earth 2! It was/is a very good series but airing episodes out of order and pre-empting it almost every other week (at least in my area) did the show no favors!

Re: TV on DVD* Challenge - Season Four Discussion Thread

I had so much stuff I wanted to get through, especially anime, but for me the big thrill of this past month was discovering all these 1950s and '60s TV series, mostly on YouTube, that I'd either never seen before, some of which I'd never even heard of, or which I hadn't seen since I was a child. And the overwhelming majority of these episodes were exciting and fun to watch. They didn't insult my intelligence and they didn't treat human beings as objects of ridicule or easy disposal. Some of them were about the lives of day-to-day professionals doing their jobs (e.g. “Everglades!,” “Rescue 8,” “Riverboat,” “Whirlybirds”).

Series seen for the first time:
The Asphalt Jungle
Broadside
The Buccaneers
Court Martial
Everglades!
Felony Squad (color)
Judd for the Defense (color)
M Squad
Mike Hammer
The New Breed
The Rat Patrol (color)
Rescue 8
Richard Diamond, Private Detective
Riverboat
Science Fiction Theatre (color)
This Man Dawson
Whirlybirds

Series I hadn’t seen in decades:
The Adventures of Robin Hood
Blue Light (color)
Daniel Boone (color)
Johnny Staccato
Kraft Suspense Theatre (color)
My Friend Flicka (color)
Perry Mason
The Rebel
Sergeant Preston of the Yukon (color)
Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (color)

Plus other old favorites that I’ve revisited in past challenges:
Adventures of Kit Carson
Adventures of Superman (some in color)
Bonanza (color)
The Cisco Kid (color)
Death Valley Days (color)
Dragnet 1970 (color)
The Green Hornet (color)
Have Gun Will Travel
Johnny Sokko and His Flying Robot (color)
Laramie (color)
The Lone Ranger
Police Story (color)
The Untouchables
Wanted: Dead or Alive

^That's some good stuff there! If creators today could make something even *half* as good as those you've listed we'd see a overall increase in quality programming and I'd not be wanting to cancel the cable service. That's not to say *everything* on TV today is bad as there *are* a few good series but the days of almost *every* night being a difficult decision as to which of the networks to watch because they *all* had a good program on at the same time are long gone... :(

Thanks, I really appreciate it.

It's just been a triple threat of stress, anxiety and loneliness leading to these waves of depression where I'd have a tough time even walking away from the couch. My wife and I work exact opposite schedules, so we just don't see all that much of each other. Over the past few months, she has picked up more hours at work so we have seen each other even less. I have my son home with me at night, but he has an independent streak a mile long. Much like I did when I was his age. Much like most only children, I'd suppose. I just crave some real, human interaction. Someone to hang out with and order pizzas and watch a couple of movies. It's tough for me to find because I have very few friends outside of work. And the last thing I want to talk about outside of work is work.

On the bright side, I am feeling a bit better at the moment. I've been venting quite a bit (see above, haha) and that always seems to at least chip away at the depression a bit. Plus, I actually have some things to look forward to in the coming weeks. Always a plus.

PRIZES

Last year, I made the mistake of drawing new numbers for each wave of substitute winners. Proving my Darwinian strength, I have adapted and this year, I'm gonna draw one big list and we're just gonna work our way down until all four prizes have been awarded. There are a few lists that stopped being updated around the 12th or 13th, but only one list that I'm classifying as ineligible to win a prize, because it consists of two episodes watched on the 1st and no updates since. I didn't see anyone with a second list post this year.

Remember, prizes can only be shipped to a U.S. address. Selected winners will have three days to reply, before forfeiting their prize to the next winner in line. I'll conduct the random drawing and post the screen cap momentarily.

Re: TV on DVD* Challenge - Season Four Discussion Thread

PRIZE WINNERS

First choice goes to HyperWeather
Second choice goes to malazar
Third choice goes to Greg MacGuffin
Post #6 is the one that I've ruled ineligible to win a prize, having only two episodes listed on the first day of the challenge
Fourth prize goes to Darkgod

Congratulations to all winners! In the event that any of these winners do not respond within three days, or should live outside the United States, we'll move down the list shown until all prizes have been sent to someone.

I had more fun reading your conversations than binging on TV this month, schedule just didn't allow more than an hour or so a day. I did watch at least one item a day for the Yearly Challenge, and the smattering of normal watches that I probably won't add to my list.

I really need to work on my TV season backlog; canceling cable after the Olympics should help with that.

Congrats to the prize winners!

Thanks for running things, Travis!

Thanks to Hamilton Books (aka Goldenwheels) for the prizes! I've said it before - if you've not yet ordered from Hamilton you *should*!

I'm *still* on a TVonDVD roll... I finished S2 of Hot in Cleveland Saturday morning, watched lots more Xena S1, and today started on the newly released *single sided* S2 of Leave it to Beaver. Why S2 instead of S1? I picked up S2 on sale at Target a couple of weeks ago and wasn't 100% sure it was the new SS set as Target has a different UPC over the original and the back of the package states double-sided discs. It was heavier than my old, defective, S2 set *and* in a standard size keep-case so I felt pretty certain I'd gotten the new set but I had to open it and see. I'd have gotten S1 from them as well but that one *was* the old flipper discs.

I'm at home with my grandson (he's recovering from the flu and I'm keeping him isolated from Grandma/Great Grandma/sisters - they are all at GGM's house). We finised Xena S1 this morning. I mentioned she got her start on Hercules so we're now watching the 3 episodes in which she appeared on that series. I have a feeling we'll be starting Hercules from the beginning soon. :)

Not sure what I did differently this year, but I watched more stuff this time than I did in the earlier TV Challenges. Looking forward to next January and Season 2 of Charlie's Angels.

Sorry, Dimension X, but for the first time in any challenge I've hosted where prizes were involved, they've all been claimed by the very first drawn recipients! Apparently, drawing a queue for every possible winner is the way to go. Duly noted!

I hope everyone had a good time. I tried to pick prizes that are eligible for various challenges, but you can watch all of them next January for the fifth season of the TV on DVD* Challenge if you hold onto them. (Criterion's edition of 12 Angry Men includes a TV movie version as a bonus feature.) The only exception is the 1943 Batman serial, but that brings me to a question I wanted to put forth:

How do we feel about expanding the scope of this challenge to include movie serials and/or web series? They're both clearly at least cousins, if not siblings, of television. We've got quite awhile before we start the 2015 discussion thread, but it's something I wanted to throw out there while it was on my mind. And, of course, I'll happily take any other feedback anyone has to offer!

For web series, are you thinking stuff like The Guild? I think they should qualify. Movie serials not so much.
