Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 9th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (Oct 1-31) P

Wow just finished The Pact and watched Absentia last night, people on here weren't kidding when they said these were hidden gems. Absolutely loved them and the concepts were refreshingly unique to me for the most part. I'll definitely have these on my stand outs of the month.

I'm planning to see as many of these modern horror films as I can (in addition to the classics & pre 2000's horror) since I have access to them. Out of the below selection (spoiler tag for length) what films do people suggest that are top notch or should avoid? (Keep in mind that I'm not huge on torture porn unless it's a good story and has scares in addition to the gore). I've also seen some of these mentioned before on here but just decided to list them anyways to see what people say. Any other suggestions or comments are welcome too.
Spoiler:

Wake Wood
The Shrine
Altered
The Hills Run Red
Laid To Rest
Exorcismus
Rest Stop
Dead End
May
Excision
The Collector/Collection
Penny Dreadful
The Deaths Of Ian Stone

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 9th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (Oct 1-31) P

Watched the G rated King Kong Escapes from Toho for my monkey/jungle movie today. Man, I LOVE when a movie takes pride in practical effects! Puts a smile on my face to see some awesome model work. Still had all the Toho cheeziness though. Recommended if you like that kind of thing.

Watched my movie and two sequels as well with the first three Nightmare On Elm Street movies. I'm no longer sure they deserve all the hype they get. The first one does, of course, but the two sequels were not that good, even the 3rd, which was written by Wes again.

Also snuck in A Bucket of Blood (1959) which I hadn't seen before. Dick Miller was great in it.

And finally, I have to mention Frankenstein's Army... OMG. I bought it yesterday based on all the hype it received earlier in this thread. Easily the most horrific movie I've seen this month. C-R-A-Z-Y. This should likely be on everyone's list this year.

I watched Exorcismus for the first time a couple days ago and enjoyed it. It wasn't the typical possession film, and that made it better imo. I have also always enjoyed Dog Soldiers.

Recommend: Dagon, Dog Soldiers, Excision, Behind the Mask, V/H/S, Fright Night remake, Detention
Avoid: Wake Wood, ATM

Pontypool, Grave Encounters 1, and Severance are subset picks this year anyway.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 9th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (Oct 1-31) P

I'm still off to a slow start, and watched my third title so far, which was the 35th Anniversary Blu-Ray release of Halloween.

The transfer was beautiful, and the mono audio cranked up was unnerving. The 7.1 track doesn't work for me based on sampling the opening credits score and such. It just packs more punch in the music in the original mono mix. Their were some major audio issues with the dialogue for the first 10 or minutes in the mono mix, that I did have to switch between the two tracks to hear the dialogue properly. That was annoying and almost ruined the viewing, but thankfully the audio and dialogue was at a steady volume for the rest of the film.

Hopefully one day A.B. loses the rights to the film, so Criterion or someone can take a swing at it, and get the mono audio right this time, being the original mix(no added or altered effects), and uncompressed this time around. Then we'd have the definitive release of the film with this transfer and the proper mono mix.

It was great revisiting the film after not watching it for a few years. And watching it alone in the dark, really unsettled me, and I even jumped at a few moments. Of course the film absolutely terrified me as a kid, but didn't quite have that affect now. But that's what happens being a seasoned horror fan and seeing so many flicks. Someone who has not seen many horror films may still be terrified by the film however. At least getting creeped out a bit was good, and I was a bit wary of the dark afterwords. So that's a good feeling to have from a horror film as an adult.

I was planning to watch The Fog tonight, but it's looking like I won't have time for it,since I have to pick my sister up from work soon, and I don't plan on staying up all night.

Tomorrow night after work, I hope I can get a couple films in.

Doctors office, ER visit, 2 stitches and a well deserved nap after, I'm finally finishing up Shakma. She's perfectly fine, eating ice cream now, and I'm thinking it might be a late night energy drink kind of viewing night for me.
Awww, poor little munchkin. Glad she doing better. Energy drink and Vodka will work. Just sayin'...

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 9th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (Oct 1-31) P

Well, tonight I watched the two rentals I had, The Wicker Man and House of Dark Shadows both FTV and for the checklist. Both were not bad. I remember watching Dark Shadows when I was a kid coming home from school, so that was a nice little trip down memory lane. The Wicker Man was different. I'd only seen the Nicolas Cage version of it, but this one with Edward Woodward was enjoyable.

Then...I looked at my DVRs. Both of them are down to 26 and 33% respectively so figured I better do some TV watching. Good thing I have a few shows that count for this challenge!

Just saw that Redbox code XD33WQAP is giving free possibly unlimited rentals. May expire at midnight, sorry for the late notice, but I just read the thread here and verified that it works. Got 6 horror titles.

Is the commentary on that actually new like it says? Looks like the same participants as the one on my 25th anniversary edition.

Wake Wood (Kind of liked this one unlike undeadcow)
May (must see)
The Deaths Of Ian Stone (Meh)
Deadgirl (must see)
Fright Night Remake (Decent)
The Thing Remake (See it)

Not on your list but if you haven't seen them Go watch these:
The House Of The Devil
Stake Land
The Innkeepers
Pandorum
Dead & Buried
Otis
Night Watch

Tonights reviews brought to you by Blue Moon who make comparably better beer than Full Moon does movies.

I added my comments next to the titles I've seen.

Spoiler:

Wake Wood - good but last third gets a little by-the-numbers
Altered - I liked it, but could be seen as getting a little hokey at times. By one of the Blair Witch guys
Laid To Rest - Didn't like this one too much but it has a following. Pretty much great kill scenes but everything else not so much
Rest Stop - it's okay if you're expectations are low
Dead End - one of the few movies I end up watching once a year. Creepy and funny, alternately, with great acting.
May - excellent twisted character-based horror
The Collector/Collection - Definitely see them back to back. The second one's so much fun, it makes the first one a better movie after you watch them.
Penny Dreadful - Boring. Only see if you want to watch a horrible actress stuck in a car for 90 minutes and look worried.
The Deaths Of Ian Stone - A little goofy but fun
The Gravedancers - This is one that's actually great for the season. It's creepy at times and funny as well. Has a tone to the movie that works perfectly for the holidays.
Behind The Mask: The Rise Of Leslie Vernon - One of my modern favorites. Meta horror and great characters.
Dog Soldiers - Up there with Predator and Aliens for me, only a smaller budget and with werewolves
Mulberry Street - Very impressive for a bargain-budget movie. A lot of fun that's only hampered by a weak last few minutes.
Dark House - If this is the one with Jeffrey Combs,...meh. It's not really too good but it does work for this time of year.
Tamara - Low budget ripoff of Carrie. Not bad, not good.
Dance Of The Dead - If it's the zombie one, a really fun time. The closest thing we have to a modern version of Return of the Living Dead.
Deadgirl - A actual original take on zombies also very unsettling.
V/H/S - I hated just about everything in this except for the first story and especially loved the last story. It's almost worth the other crap just for the last one.
Grave Encounters 1 & 2 - They've both got great scenes, but they get muddled with cheesy moments in the first and douchebag characters in the second.
Severance - Seemed fun enough when I watched it, just didn't care for the final third so much.
Detention - Just watched this and loved it. It's off the charts crazy.
Citadel - Emotional for me with also some good tense scenes.
The Road (2011) - Watched this last night. It's a unique set up into three stories with the first one being quite frightening, but the movie gets less scary as more is explained in the following stories.
The Nameless - Watched this but can barely remember much about it. My girlfriend at the time wouldn't shut up when it was on so I can't say I gave it a fair shake.
Chernobyl Diaries - Didn't think this was as bad as others say, with the first hour being interesting. But the final third is very unimaginative and leaves a bad taste afterwards.
Fright Night Remake - Hated it. Farrell was funny at times but the rest was pointless and the effects are worse than an Asylum production
Fido - Another fun original take on zombies. It's weird this isn't more widely appreciated.
The Thaw - Middling ripoff of The Thing with special appearance by alcohol-bloated Val Kilmer
Wicked Little Things - Was bored silly. And Scout Compton was as awful as ever.
The Hamiltons - It was okay for such a small budgeted movie, but the story builds up to a twist that you can see coming.
The Abandoned - Excellent creepy film. I don't even like saying much about it so people go in fresh.
The Awakening - Decent little ghost story in the traditional British sense, with Rebecca Hall just killing it.
The Maze - Think I saw this a few years ago and if it's the same one, it's an awful by-the-numbers slasher with the look of early digital video
The Loved Ones - People seem to love this one but I thought it was just okay. Mostly a string of torture scenes with some humor.
Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D - If you view this as being akin to early 90's horror sequels, it's actually quite fun. Don't try to rationalize anything in the story or you'll go cross-eyed.
The Reeds - It's okay. It had some good moments but nothing amazing.
Atrocious - A found footage movie I liked a good deal. Very tense and some stuff in the ending is really messed up.
Dagon - Probably one of two true Lovecraft adaptations. Very good.
The Woman In Black Remake - By the numbers ghost story with nothing new.
ATM - Douchebags get stuck in a confined space and argue. Didn't like it too much.
The Thing Remake - It's entertaining, but overall it's just another recent middling studio horror movie made for name value.

Going to bed "early" after finishing my 50th movie... The Flesh Eaters (1964), which was much better than I expected with a novel premise and grisly effects.

Dead End, Dance of the Dead, and May are all good too.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 9th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (Oct 1-31) P

Thanks all for the responses. I wanted to narrow the list down since I don't watch as much as some people on here a daily basis. I already have some re-watches/definite first time views for this decade planned & other decade picks out of the way aside from this list which I wasn't sure where to begin with so hearing suggestions definitely helps.

I plan to get some of these suggestions out of the way before the end of the month as I tend to focus on franchises and classics closer to halloween. I have seen: house of the devil (huge fan), pandorum (not bad), dead & buried (enjoyed but not a personal favorite), stake land (a little depressing overall but good), and the innkeepers (liked it, but not nearly as good as house of the devil). These mixed reviews makes me curious about Wake Wood, I may check it out. Yes, just realized my error with the thing prequel and putting some subsets on the list (I will definitely see those & in their skin).

My boyfriend is a huge alien type horror fan so we decided to check out Altered now after seeing Shakma which I'll post about tomorrow on the subset discussion for that.

Wow, that's a lot of recent horror you have to catch up to. The ones that I've seen and liked from that list are: The Shrine, Altered, May, Excision, Gravedancers, Behind the Mask, Dog Soldiers, Pontypool, Deadgirl, Grave Encounters, Severance, The Nameless, Fido, The Awakening, Dagon, and The Woman in Black.

Just finished a Ben Wheatley double-feature: Sightseers and A Field in England. Sightseers was fun ... just expect more of a pitch-black comedy than anything scary. And A Field in England ... I'm not really sure what I just saw. I dozed off a couple of times, which probably isn't a positive response

Yeah quite the list for catching up and I've seen a lot of modern horror over the years even some obscure ones. Goes to show we'll always be chasing new titles in the horror genre.

There's never a shortage of new titles in the horror genre. The problem, as a horror fan, is the percentage of bad movies is probably higher than any other genre.

It's new, but I haven't listened to it yet. Some people say the Criterion track which is used for the 25th Anniversary edition is better, but some like the new track even if it's not as informative from the sounds of it.

You got a point there. Sometimes I can find so bad its good horror films entertaining but when they are complete shit its a true bummer in this genre compared to other genres. The biggest flops for me from what I can remember are: Mortuary (Tobe Hooper's) and Milo (1998). I've been lucky to avoid many really awful horror films thankfully.

Friday the 13th, meh, maybe, works well for a slasher, but closer to Halloween people just get in the mood for something spooky. Of course it still made plenty of money so it all worked out.

It wasn't nearly as good as The Conjuring or Insidious 2, but I thought it was an entertaining throwback to 80s slashers. It felt a lot more like an 80s slasher than any of the recent remake/reboots of the 80s horror movies. The acting didn't really bother me.

I thought it had a great tone, with some brutal kills and effective dark comedy. I liked the vulnerability of the killers, editing, and soundtrack. Some of the supporting characters were underwhelming, one character was introduced and killed off while I was in the bathroom. However I think the movie makes up for that with one of the most likable horror heroines in years.

I've seen a lot of wildly varying opinions about all kinds of movies in this thread, I don't see what's so shocking that some of us might have enjoyed You're Next.
Saw was POS? For someone that says that You're Next had brutal kills, the first few Saw's were really good and delivered. Disappointing tieup, but that's what happens when they change writers and everything. They probably didn't hold up Insidious because The Conjuring did so well, they expected another Paranormal film, and with James Wan behind you, they can release it at any time and make money.

Most likable horror heroines in years? Got to go with the chick from Evil Dead. I liked her and she was bad ass. I will admit the chick in You're Next is good, but she was just surrounded by a horrible cast. I'm really just how shocked the rating it had gotten for a while on Rotten Tomatoes. Evil Dead blew this film out of the water.

I watched Absentia and thought it had some interesting moments, but the main cop was kind of annoying. I liked how they kind of left it open for the audience to decide the fates, but it just didn't come together from part 1 to part 2 in the film.

As for your list, here's my thoughts on what I've seen (and I hope to watch a lot of what you listed as well):

Watch: The Thing, The Rite (I think...been a while since I watched it), Fright Night Remake, VHS, Behind the Mask, May, Rest Stop (maybe?), Hills Run Red

Stay FAR away: Woman in Black (put me to sleep, but does have creepy moments), ATM, Texas Massacre 3D, Excision

For Absentia, I agree about the main cop and I do think it could have been improved upon but it still remains one of the best independent horror titles I've seen yet, The Pact is better in my opinion though. I think both films bring some pretty new ideas to the table, are well acted, great atmosphere, and intrigued me with the storyline the whole way through.

I'll definitely keep your advice in mind for must watches and stay far away titles. Sometimes I like mediocore teen horror films as a guilty pleasure so I might check out Excision, TCM 3D, and The Woman In Black just depends on my mood/schedule for other films I have planned. It definitely sounds like I'll dislike ATM from your's/other's advice so I plan to avoid that for now at least.

Yeah, independent films are hard to come by, I've sadly come to see. The Surge was good, not sure if you can find it anywhere. Then Ginger Snaps. Oh, the WWE Studios produced The Day...I wasn't sure if that was the one you are talking about, but if it is, add it to must watch. Really good film, even though it is a WWE Studios film.

If you like mediocore teen horror, I'd try to find a copy of The Surge. Kind of Chronicles type film. TCM 3D was just horrible bad lines and worse acting. I'd say out of the three, I'd go Woman in Black as there were some scares and an old school horror to it.

Now off to watch Shakma for tonight's theme.
The only film on your list I've seen is the prequel/remake The Thing. Yes, it's both and not too bad a film. The problem is that it's also rather disposable and doesn't really bring anything new to the table when taken into consideration with the classic 1951 The Thing from Another World and Carpenter's surprisingly excellent 1982 remake. Just like I did with the 1982 remake I went into this with low expectations. Unlike in '82 I didn't come out blown away. Had Carpenter not made the '82 film this would be better but with such a high bar set it just doesn't hold muster. Does that mean it's "bad" and that you should avoid the film? Absolutely not. Just don't go in with high expectations and you'll likely enjoy the ride.

I'd say it's neck-and-neck with the Sci-Fi genre. At least horror has a larger pool from which to draw those few-and-far-between "good" films.

Love Ginger Snaps and I'll keep an eye out for The Surge. I wasn't talking about The Day but that sounds interesting too, will try to see it if I can. That's a bummer about TCM 3D I'm a huge fan of the 2003 remake, like it more than the original (which wasn't bad but felt the remake was more tense and well done for a remake). Yeah, I may not get to Excision, TCM 3D, and The Woman In Black if there are better ones we'll see how it goes.

Thanks for the heads up, I'll definitely go into it with an open mind if I check it out.

I really liked the TCM remake and that's about the only horror film Michael Bay didn't really destroy when he pushed out all the remakes. I was really hoping for something good in the 3D one that came out, saw it at 10 PM on the Thursday it came out and left disgusted at what they did to the series.
