Wait, I thought you get assigned a theme night and pick one movie from that theme?

Just noticed this one. You DO mean "gorilla," don't you? Because if you don't, that opens up a whole 'nother can of worms.
Also, after you get the theme nights list locked down, do you anticipate retiring any of the checklist items? 'Cause there are a few (*coughkiller/evilchildcough*) that I wouldn't mind seeing rotate off this year.
Just wondering.
And one more thing: is there a list anywhere that shows all of the subset films, so that we don't repeat any this year? If not, I can pull one together pretty quickly--just let me know.

Yeah, I'm doing everything a mile-a-minute this year. Mistakes are inevitable and sometimes hilarious.
There will be tonight. Just need to make the finishing touches on theme nights.

Here's a list of all the movies that have been previously picked as subset choices and as Horror Film Club choices, thereby taking them off the table for THIS year's subset choices:

I wish I had a DVR. Chiller has some decent movies on this week. Among them is the first and best Pumpkinhead.

There are tons of aquatic horror on netflix streaming and based on what hasn't been used before according to the list above here are my suggestions:
Aquatic Horror - Open Water, Piranha, The Reef, Shark Night, Barracuda, Black Water, or Jaws. (some of these films not on netflix streaming are streaming elsewhere online too)
I'd also like to throw out a suggestion for someone else as I don't have access to this title nor am I very into this subject but have heard it's good, for western horror- "the burrowers".

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 9th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/3
So, would everyone be in favor of making Made-for-TV Horror Films a theme night?
This is the thing. On days where I had less time or wasn't able to find as many suitable films, I'd just do one. Otherwise I'd try to get a few in. Of course, attempting the checklist makes it impossible to only stick with themes of the day, but that's part of the fun for sure. Every year is a different experience. Speaking of that, my intention is never to repeat a film I've watched in a previous challenge.
On a side note, today I read the FUNNIEST and possibly the best Amazon review ever...
I was going over details of the The Ultimate Hammer Collection (21 Disc Box Set) [DVD] on Amazon.co.uk, and I noticed THIS review:

Alright, here it is...possibly out of order, but with all of the this year's themes intact and with updated links:
Alright, based on feedback I let The Asian buffet take a one year hiatus. In fact, the same goes for the location-based horrors.
And 'Cinema Inspired By' is also sitting this one out. It's obvious that there's no replacing King, Lovecraft, Poe and Matheson, so why try? And the checklist covers authors/screenwriters anyway.
Even werewolves was left off this time and instead I included the crazy / psychotronic theme for the full moon on 10/18.
Of course werewolf, Asian horror films and whatever else are found in some other themes.
The returning themes were added based on feedback and a random number generator.
For the theme suggestions that didn't make it - I'm considering a few for use on the checklist. And there's always next year for the rest.
Feedback welcome.
I'll do the subset kickoff in a few minutes...after I have some dinner.
T H E M E N I G H T S | Both 'Examples' and the copy and paste portion haven't been updated yet. And more links coming soon. ?? LINKS OF SUB-GENRES & BEYOND 2009 LIST | 2010 LIST | 2011 LIST | 2012 LIST GOAL: To Sync 100% with the 31 Film Subset! OBVIOUS ALERT: Some links don't contain a complete listing of all films from that specific sub-genre and/or are outside the horror genre altogether.

The theme night list looks fantastic, looking forward to subsets. Random question but would "From Dusk Till Dawn" qualify as a horror western? I mean in general not for a subset suggestion. Also, does E.T. or Death Becomes Her count as a family friendly halloween movies (separate from theme night) because I've seen it listed as that online. Just wondering for the sake of this challenge, I plan to wild card them if they don't.

And no on both E.T. and Death Becomes Her. They are fantasy if anything. E.T. will get you some unwanted attention in regards to your choice of movies. Yeah there's the Wild Card and yeah you can really just watch whatever you want, but some will have opinions. And some will have strong opinions.
Traditionally Wild Cards were/are intended to account for horror films that fall short of the feature film length, or just some horror shorts in general. The WC's really help if you want to count decade checklist items individually. Now that we can combine shorts WC's aren't needed so much anymore, but they're good to account for strays here and there, such as counting a 30 minute TV show viewing as single entry.

Well, to make that theme night work as I'm understanding it, someone would have to be killed WITH the toolbox in THE TOOLBOX MURDERS, ditto a spade in THE SPADE COUNTY MASSACRE, a lawnmower in THE LAWNMOWER MAN, and a ladder in JACOB'S LADDER...thus my contention that it'd make a much better checklist item.
And then there's the case of HATCHET...is anyone actually killed with a hatchet in the film? I've not seen it, but the cover features an axe.

I just noticed one year that I had watched a number of films with weapons and tools in the title and thought that would make a good checklist item (or theme since we seemed desperate this year). It had nothing to do with how or even if that weapon was used in the film.
As for this year's theme, I'm going to have to think about what possible titles to throw out there ...

From Dusk Till Dawn is more horror "gangster" than horror western. Don't really think it has any western elements. Takes place in Mexico, directed by Robert Rodriguez, and that's about as close as it gets.

As Dick already stated about from From Dusk Till Dawn, no, however, perhaps the 3rd one might qualify as a horror western as that one was set in the old west. Another horror western might be Bloodrayne 2. And as was also stated about E.T.. Watching that might not be a good idea as it could open up a can of worms for you, as we had someone watch it in the past and that started a whole thing of drama on this thread.
I misunderstood that in addition to shorts for wild cards that films that come close to the horror or halloween spectrum could be used as wild cards, but I tend to avoid wild cards anyways because I like to stick with true horror aside from halloween themed animated films or hocus pocus/ernest scared stupid for example (e.t. & death becomes her were the only ones I wasn't clear on if they count for family friendly halloween films out of several).

Thats the main argument to get rid of wildcards... there should be no reason et is counted. I can find something horror in any movie if I tried real hard.

I'm in if subset volunteers are still needed.
My preference would be The Gentleman of Horror, and my first choice would be The Flesh and the Fiends. It's available through Hulu and Dailymotion, and is available on DVD from Nexflix.
In addition to Peter Cushing, it features nice performances by Donald Pleasence and George Rose. I think Frankenstein and The Revenge of Frankenstein are also good choices for Peter Cushing, but they make an excellent double bill, while The Flesh and the Fiends is fine as a stand alone.

That's true, I have no problem eliminating wild cards since we can add up shorts together. As long as legit halloween themed family friendly stuff is counted, unlike films that are questionable, like the two I asked about. I don't think E.T. and death becomes her are scary in any way haha just thought it could be possibly halloween related for the family friendly watching but now I'm clear on that.

I'm not trying to lobby for its inclusion in the future (haven't been on the forum in a couple days), but for what it's worth, that's not how I meant my suggestion to be interpreted. I was more or less talking about an instrument of destruction being in the title, not necessarily being used. I had figured the Blade films would be something else that would qualify as would the previously mentioned Guillotine, even Silver Bullet. I wouldn't want it to be read as rigidly as you did.
I just noticed one year that I had watched a number of films with weapons and tools in the title and thought that would make a good checklist item (or theme since we seemed desperate this year). It had nothing to do with how or even if that weapon was used in the film.

Just putting in a bid for subset for Saturday October 26th's Mass Marathon of the Damned IV -Icons, 2 -&- Sequels: The Prequel for Psycho III. Several years ago I picked Psycho II as a subset and I feel it's a great year for Icon Norman Bates, what with two more of his flicks arriving on BD and the success of the new Bates Motel series (which I hope to finally get around to watching as part of this challenge).

Yeah, there's plenty of actual family horror (or any subgenre of horror for that matter) that finding something shouldn't be difficult. For family horror there's been a bunch in just the last couple of years... Paranorman, Frankenweenie, Hotel Transylvania... plus the Scooby Doo movies, and stuff like Monster Squad that has been around forever being awesome.
