1. Dominion Tank Police, ACT 1 (1988/Japan, 40 min., color, anime sci-fi crime thriller/OAV) VHS (in Japanese with English subs.)
Dir.: Koichi Mashimo.
Dystopian future city is policed by the reckless tank police who meet their match in Buaku and the Puna sisters. Mildly entertaining, but too derivative (Patlabor, anyone?) and saddled with too much goofy humor for my taste. This was the first legit anime tape in my collection.

In 1920s Tokyo, Sakura is eager to do battle with the Black Sanctum Council, but is assigned to the Imperial Flower theatrical troupe instead. She is shocked and traumatized as she gradually becomes aware of her own hidden powers.

“Danger, Sweet as Honey!”
Ash & co. land on Honey Island and get into more battles with Team Rocket. Their Pokémon get separated from them and Pikachu and his band rescue Meowth from danger, prompting a change of heart in the rascally talking Pokémon.

A 1985 mecha series that’s not Robotech or Gundam! A handful of fighter pilots prepare to operate giant animal-style robots to combat an alien invasion.
6. *Sohryuden: Legend of the Dragon Kings, Vol. 6 (1991/Japan, 92 min., color, anime fantasy thriller/OAV) VHS (in Japanese with English subs.)

The Dragons come to America! Watch out, NORAD! Watch out White House! Watch out World Trade Center (a decade before 9/11)! The final episodes of a pretty astounding apocalyptic thriller.
7. THE MAGIC PONY (1975/Soviet Union, 74 min., color, animated fantasy) VHS (English-dubbed)
Director: Ivan Ivanov-Vano. Voice cast: Jim Backus, Hans Conried.
Fluidly animated fantasy feature from the Soviet Union and a remake of a 1947 feature. It was released in the U.S. in 1977 in a then-newly created English dub. I’m not 100% certain that the film I watched is the remake and not a dubbed version of the original. Both were made by the same director. It’s based on the famous Russian folk tale, “The Humpbacked Pony.”
8. Tekkaman Space Knight (1975/Japan, color, anime space sci-fi series/Tatsunoko) VHS (English-dubbed)
#3: The Space Armada (23 min.)
From the folks who brought you “Gatchaman.” Poor English dubbing cannot diminish some great spaceship design and animation in a routine anime tale of Earth defense against alien invasion.

#3: Sakura’s Stage Debut
Sakura undergoes acting and voice lessons in order to make her debut in the Flower Troupe's stage show, but also manages to squeeze in a fight with the invading Wakiji when they attack the Ginza district.

I watched the first six episodes for the Sci-Fi Challenge, but I saw episode #6 over two weeks ago and I'd forgotten several key plot points. Note to self: always try to finish a series within the challenge!

Dir.: Hiroko Tokita.
#1: Aim For Barcelona! The Young Girl Will Be The Winner Of The National Achievement Award!!
Odd comedy series about a high school girl learning judo from her grandfather and complications with various male characters. It was extremely popular in Japan and lasted 124 episodes.

18. *Rascal the Raccoon (1977/Japan, 90 min., color, anime drama series/World Masterpiece Theater) DVD (in Japanese, with no subs.)
This is a 90-minute compilation of a 52-episode series based on Sterling North’s “Rascal: A Memoir of a Better Era” about the author’s boyhood in Wisconsin and his relationship with a pet raccoon. The animation of the precocious raccoon is quite charming and looks forward to Pikachu in “Pokémon.”

Lady Oscar gets a dose of reality when she sees how oppressed the peasants are, how callous the nobles are, and how extravagant Marie Antoinette has become. I watched the first ten episodes for the Historical Challenge in June. Hopefully, I can finish the series for this one.

This is an edited compilation of episodes from a Japanese TV series about an American auto racer trying to succeed in Japan. Unlike “Speed Racer,” the emphasis here is on the nuts and bolts of racing, particularly training and preparation and fine-tuning one’s car to meet the demands of the road rally, events that are very different from racetrack racing. The director went on to do a number of celebrated anime movies, including DAGGER OF KAMUI and METROPOLIS.

Director: Ivan Ivanov-Vano. Voice cast: Jim Backus, Hans Conried.
Fluidly animated fantasy feature from the Soviet Union and a remake of a 1947 feature. It was released in the U.S. in 1977 in a then-newly created English dub. I’m not 100% certain that the film I watched is the remake and not a dubbed version of the original. Both were made by the same director. It’s based on the famous Russian folk tale, “The Humpbacked Pony.”
