Just a question here. There was a Transformer type cartoon on but instead of robots, it was animals. Does anyone know the name of that cartoon?

I think you're referring to Beast Wars: Transformers (Transformers: Beast Wars).

I just want to say, that while I enjoy running these challenges, it takes up a lot of time that I don't know if I can commit to next year, so I do not think I will be able to run this challenge next year.

Dude, I totally hear you. I do one in January and one in June and each year I feel like there's no way I can make myself host the next one. Doing two back-to-back is rough, especially with prizes. I don't think I'd do it!

Yeah, my two challenges are six months apart (and one of them I've only done one and a half times). I can't imagine doing them back-to-back. Especially for a first-timer.

I think you're doing a great job with the Sci-fi/Fantasy one but can understand not wanting to devote so much time when you have a lot of family things to do.

Also, for the "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs," I'm okay with a damaged case as long as the discs play fine. It's a donation, so I think playability is the important part, not that it's in perfect condition. :) Thanks for offering the donation, coyoteblue! (I know that it will be up to the host, but just wanted to throw my 2 cents in.)

Awesome! The links are really helpful. I'm digging the emphasis on awards in the checklist this year. However, I'm not sure exactly how much of the checklist I'm going to finish this year; I'm got my own goals for this challenge: watch Sealab 2021, finish at least two anime series, watch the Disney films in my unwatched list.

I got underway this morning with The Transformers: More Than Meets the Eye. I got a really good deal a few years ago on Hasbro's 25th Anniversary Optimus Prime, which included a reproduction of the original Optimus toy, a reprint of Marvel Comics's first issue and a DVD presentation of "More Than Meets the Eye", the first three episodes of the animated series cut together as a feature.

There are plenty of nitpicks to be had, sure, but it was still fun to go back to the beginning of the franchise I loved so much as a child. One thing that I think gets overlooked in typical conversations about the show is how much humor there was. My favorite line in "More Than Meets the Eye" belongs to Megatron:

"Your 'knowledge' is overshadowed only by your stupidity, Starscream."
I loved that. The animation is also surprisingly detailed, particularly when contrasted with a lot of other cartoons from its era. It had to have been quite a chore to animate so many different robots transforming, many of them simultaneously on screen together. Not only that, but to have them shown from different angles and against various backgrounds, little of which could be done by simply reusing the same footage.

One last thought: I always thought highly of Shockwave, particularly from his depiction in the aforementioned Marvel Comics series, but I was reminded in "More Than Meets the Eye" just how bad a dude he is. The rest of the Transformers are buried in Mount St. Helens for four million years. Throughout that entire time, he reigned over Cybertron in Megatron's absence! That's quite an accomplishment.

I just started the challenge with "Akira." Have no idea what it's about. Picked it randomly from unwatched at iCheckMovies and it was available from my library. I have 4 more and one on the way that I picked just like it. :) Really wanted to get some of those movies that are on all the lists crossed off once and for all.

AKIRA's a great animated science fiction film, but just be aware that it may not be all that comprehensible on a first viewing. I think it was the fifth time I watched it that I finally understood exactly what "Akira" was. But it's also of significant historical interest in that it was the first Japanese animated feature that built up a large cult following in the U.S. and paved the way for the explosion of anime in this country that began in the early 1990s. AKIRA played at festivals and repertory theaters in the U.S. on a regular basis from about 1989 on. I first saw it in either 1989 or 1990 at the Film Forum in New York. There had been other sci-fi anime features aimed at adult audiences that played the U.S. earlier in the 1980s, e.g. PHOENIX 2772 and WARRIORS OF THE WIND (the notorious shortened version of Miyazaki's NAUSICAA), but none took off like AKIRA.

Shockwave was one of my favorite toys as a child, that and Astrotrain but who doesn't love triple changers. They didn't feature Shockwave that much on the cartoon but he was a complete bad ass whenever he was on screen. I should have read the comics.

Akira is on my viewing list as well though I've seen it before. It's an interesting film though I'm a little glad that talks of a live action remake appear to have fallen through.

I've started my journey through Batman: The Animated Series and it's still a solid show. My only complaint is that the episodes are not in chronological order so in one episode Robin appears out of nowhere and in the next episode the police have no idea who Batman is, random I tell you. One disc down, a lot more to go.

Nice (if random) choice. Classic dystopian anime. It helped establish a beachhead on these shores for anime back in the Eighties.
