Fourth Annual Drive-in/Exploitation/B-Movie Challenge April 1-30 2013
http://www.dvdtalk.com/images/newbutton2003.gif presents http://i779.photobucket.com/albums/y...ve-in-2013.png The Fourth Annual Drive-In/Exploitation/B-Movie Challenge!! END OF THE WORLD! April 1 - April 30, 2013 100 Movies in 30 Days. This thread is for discussion only. The 2012 discussion thread is here The 2012 list thread is here The 2011 discussion thread is here. 2011 list thread is here. The 2010 discussion thread is here. 2010's list thread is HERE. Actual lists will go ***here***. As with most challenges, the goal is to reach 100 movies. Your own goal might be higher or lower. Challenge begins (Sunday night midnight) April 1, 2013, 12:00 am EDT and ends April 30 at dawn (that is, the morning of May 1). This might be one of the most challenging challenges to date. What we are celebrating here is trash cinema. The dreck and dross of films. Flotsam and just plain shit. Cult Movies, B-Movies, Exploitation, Guilty pleasures, all. "Bad" is a relative term. One person's trash can be another one's treasure. We're not here to denigrate these films, but to exult them (of course, if a film really sucks, then it can be fun to acknowledge that, too). What kinds of films are we talking about? Well, there is no hard and fast rule. This one is largely up to you.

In its original usage, during the so-called Golden Age of Hollywood, the term more precisely identified a film intended for distribution as the less-publicized, bottom half of a double feature. Although the U.S. production of movies intended as second features largely ceased by the end of the 1950s, the term B movie continued to be used in the broader sense it maintains today. In its post-Golden Age usage, there is ambiguity on both sides of the definition: on the one hand, many B movies display a high degree of craft and aesthetic ingenuity; on the other, the primary interest of many inexpensive exploitation films is prurient. In some cases, both are true.
Exploitation film is a type of film that is promoted by "exploiting" often lurid subject matter. The term "exploitation" is common in film marketing, used for all types of films to mean promotion or advertising. These films then need something to exploit, such as a big star, special effects, sex, violence, romance, etc. An exploitation film, however, relies heavily on sensationalist advertising and broad and lurid overstatement of the issues depicted, regardless of the intrinsic quality of the film. Very often, exploitation films are of low quality in every sense. However, this has not always been the case. Exploitation films sometimes attract critical attention and cult followings. RULES: The Goal is 100 films. These type of films tend to be short, but they also might be a challenge to get through. Your personal goal might be higher or lower, depending on your tolerance for this type of cinema. A film can only be counted once per list with the exception of riffed/commentaried films (see below). This challenge is for Movies. Although we are not allowing TV shows, Made for TV Movies are allowed as are Direct to Video features. We are allowing documentaries on B-Movies, Exploitation and Drive-ins and those involved with the production thereof. These should be features over 40 minutes.. We are also allowing trailer compilations, such as 42nd Street Forever and Something Weird compilations. Throw a viewing party and show trailers between movies. Mystery Science Theater 3000, Riff Trax, Cinematic Titanic, etc. are allowed. If there is a second riffed version (for example, MST3K did one, then Cinematic Titanic did the same movie) you may watch the second and any additional riffed versions for a full credit each, but I encourage you to just watch another movie, instead. Commentaries. All commentaries count as views. Films that have been nominated for Oscars are discouraged but not banned. I had originally wanted this to be the only hard rule, but I came across too many exceptions. Drive-In exception rule: Any film seen in an actual Drive-In during the challenge 2013, regardless of other qualification, counts toward your list.. Please note that it was a Drive-In Movie. We will go with the Sci-Fi rule on TV Mini-series (one "night" equals an entry), on Serials (we'll go with an hour's worth per entry), provided they actually were theatrical serials. A serial episode is about 15-20 minutes, so an hour's worth counts as an entry. Four-15 minute ones or Three-20 minute episodes. There are 3 Wild Cards for non-conforming films. These are ones that are close but may have some doubts about. For fun, keep a running tally of "before they were famous" appearances in your list. Please number your lists. Also, it is helpful to put a link to your list in your signature. This makes it easier for others to check out your list. New rule. Please tally your totals including "new views" at the end of the challenge. Prizes supplied by Hamilton Books http://i1258.photobucket.com/albums/...1334603900.jpg And The Celluloid Terror Blog .http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y272/sethdlh/ct-1.jpg Keep discussions civil. We're all here to have fun. This post is subject to revision and nothing is final. "I still don't understand what kinds of movies you are talking about." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B-movie http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exploitation_movie This list is not exclusive nor definitive, but these are the most representative movies for the challenge: Biker Films Blaxploitation Cannibal films Carsploitation Cult Movies Giallo films Mondo films Eco-Terror films Nazisploitation Rape / Revenge films Sexploitation Shocksploitation Spaghetti Westerns Women in Prison films Martial Arts films Eschploitation (religious end times) Hixploitation/Moonshiners Nunsploitation Stoner Films Vigilante films Financial Bombs Critical Bombs (Less than 20% Rotten Tomatoes or Metacritic or IMDB Bottom 100 {Bottom 100 archive}) 1930s and 1940s Cautionary Films Juvenile Delinquent 60s Beach movies Elvis Films starring Rock Bands (or Rock stars that didn't become legit actors) Eurospy films (not James Bond) Depression era criminals Ozploitation (Australian exploitation) "Foreign" Ripoff films (like Turkish cinema) Bollywood "Race" films (early films made specifically for the African-American market pre-1950) Films Dealing with "race" (pre-1965) MST3K version of a film Non-MST3K version of a film featured on MST3K "Before they were famous" "Condemned" by the Catholic National Legion of Decency Bad Sequels to well-regarded films Mildred Pierce-type "Women's pictures" from the 40s-60s 3-D films from the 90s and before "Hood Films" Mexican Wrestling films See below a list of filmmakers and actors that by their very presence make a film "safe". While some of these people (actors especially) might have some exceptions in their credits (like Star Trek for William Shatner), generally films with the listed creative talent are safe for the challenge. Questions? Ask in the thread. |

New rule this year is just a request that participants tally their totals, including first time views if they include those, at the end of the challenge.
Any old business? New business? Any changes to the checklist? I'm considering pruning or eliminating the distributor safe list and just keeping it for suggestion purposes. Thinking of adding Ving Rhames to the safe list. His career has headed to Lorenzo Lamas territory. I always felt bad that Sid Haig was supposed to be in Pulp Fiction but turned it down. He could have had Ving Rhames career. Now, it turns out Ving is having Sid's career. |

Looking forward to this, and while I'm here, a question. I just bought the Conan Complete Set to watch during the Action Adventure Challenge, but it occured to me, would the Conan movies count as a before they were stars eligible?

Speaking of Lovecraftian, I will say about something last year. I finally watched Cabin in the Woods for the Horror challenge. Had I known more about it, I probably would NOT have allowed it for this challenge. I loved the movie, but it wasn't what I thought. Way too big budget and ambitious for the realm of this challenge. Mayyyyybe as a Wild Card on the haunted cabin pastiche. Horror is allowed, but it really should be the low budget, cheesy type, or direct parodies of such. Cabin in the Woods went into a high concept that I really loved, but it just didn't feel like THIS challenge. It has to be the right kind of horror otherwise this is just Horror Movie Challenge part 2. |
Re: Fourth Annual Drive-in/Exploitation/B-Movie Challenge April 1-30 2013
I added a new film to the list. END OF THE WORLD Film. There have been a lot of these lately. I'm even counting the big Hollywood ones. This is the comedy or drama about how regular people deal with the imminent end of the world, like Melancholia (2011), Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, Children of Men, This is the End (would count but it comes out in June), Dr. Strangelove, etc. Any others we can think of? Not Post-apocalyptic, so much as "the end is coming".

Re: Fourth Annual Drive-in/Exploitation/B-Movie Challenge April 1-30 2013
I see Bruce Campbell is a safe actor, and I guess that would include the first 2 Evil Dead films, but how about Army of Darkness? Didn't AoD get more exposure, so was less likely to count as a B Movie?
|
Re: Fourth Annual Drive-in/Exploitation/B-Movie Challenge April 1-30 2013
Yeah, Army of Darkness. Generally films he had a major part in. I would exclude his cameo appearances in Sam Raimi's current blockbusters (Spider-Man, Oz, etc.) Congo might be out, as well. Occasionally these guys got a shot at stardom and were in a big Movie, so those are exceptions to the "safe list". This would apply to directors, as well. For instance, Tobe Hooper is on the safe list but I would probably exclude Poltergeist.

Re: Fourth Annual Drive-in/Exploitation/B-Movie Challenge April 1-30 2013
Congo is borderline. 21% on RT, but it was a box office hit. $152,022,101 worldwide ($81,022,101 domestic) theatrically versus a $50,000,000 budget. Big name director and producer and based upon big name author.
It might squeak through, but it's still a good example of an "A" film in an otherwise "B" career. |

Anybody planning on picking up any new DVD releases just in time for this challenge? A couple on the way:
March 19th: Action Packed Movie Marathon (I still got my Exterminator 2 VHS!) March 26th: Katarina's Kat Scratch Cinema: Alley Cat & Angels Brigade Been thinking of giving Angels Brigade a blind-buy (Greydon Clark fan, here) and I've seen Alley Cat before. It's a little light on violence & nudity, but I remember having enough fun with it. April 23rd: Fifty Shades of De Sade (Nice tie-in from the folks at Blue Underground. It's a 4-pack re-release of BU's DeSade movies...Mostly done by Jess Franco) |
Re: Fourth Annual Drive-in/Exploitation/B-Movie Challenge April 1-30 2013
Excellent, the 2 top shelves of my 'to watch' shelf is challenge applicable.
Although I don't know how I was able to get 89 in last year. Shooting for 60ish. |

Very excited! I'm already underway with the Action/Adventure/Crime/Mystery Challenge, so I plan to be along for the party!

Re: Fourth Annual Drive-in/Exploitation/B-Movie Challenge April 1-30 2013
A couple things. First, while I don't own Congo, so it does not matter to me, but for those that do own it, wouldn't it be eligible under the idea that it was nominated for a Razzie?
Second, would Death Race be eligible? It received a 43 on the tomato meter, but is it close enough to an exploitation film to be eligible due to it's subject matter? |
