FRIDAYS finally coming to DVD!
Per The Wrap, Shout Factory just bought the rights to the show:
Shout! Factory has acquired worldwide rights to "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis" and "Fridays." It marks the first time that either show has appeared on DVD.
"Fridays" was a sketch comedy show that was ABC's failed attempt to duplicate the success of rival NBC's "Saturday Night Live." Despite only being on the air for just three seasons, it served as a stepping stone for a number of comedians like Larry David ("Seinfeld") and Larry Charles ("Borat") who graduated to bigger things.
Shout! Factory secured the rights to "Fridays," but does not know when it will release the show on home entertainment platforms. The sketch comedy series ran from 1980 to 1982 and, like "Saturday Night Live," it featured celebrity hosts such as Susan Sarandon and Billy Crystal and musical guests such as AC/DC and The Pretenders. Although "Fridays" briefly bested "Saturday Night Live" in the ratings, it went off the air after ABC decided to make "Nightline" a five-nights-a-week program.

Suprised the announcement doesn't mention Michael Richards and all his Kramer-ish characters. Also Mark Blankfield and a super hot Melanie Chartoff.

I remember reading somewhere that Michael Richards was the sole hold out for signing off to have these released on home video.

The best moments from this show involved some complex pranks by Andy Kaufman.
The Jim Carrey biopic recreated some of it, but it will be great to see the whole thing again.

Re: FRIDAYS finally coming to DVD!
It was an even bigger problem with SCTV because SCTV used a ton of music in sketches that they never had the rights to use in the first place. They apparently just used it not even knowing then needed to ask and/or clear it. So a lot of the SCTV sketches had to be cut (like the "Stairways to Heaven" commercial) or have generic music put over the top (like in some of the Smengies sketches). With Fridays it's just the musical performances and I don't think music rights would effect any of the actual sketches. So as much as I'd love to see all the musical guests (and Fridays had some great, cool, weird ones) I could live with a few of those having to be cut due to rights, if all the sketches are intact.

If this had come out 10 years ago, sure, but with the combination of Seinfeld having been off the air for a long time and Richards well-publicised Mel Gibson-ish racist tirade a few years ago, he's maybe not as much of a "draw" as he once was.

That's like this example: I hate potheads. So I'm not buying "Gilligan's Island" on DVD because actor Bob Denver and actress Dawn Wells became known pot-heads.

Shout has a release date of August 6th for a "Best of" set. 16 episodes and it looks like with the musical guests intact.

I had such fond memories of this show, that I paid $20 to buy the terrible-quality DVD-R bootlegs online. The musical performances were great to see again, but the sketches were just painful to try and sit through.
