I watched Shivers for today's Apartment Horror theme. It's Cronenberg's first film, and it suffers from the bad acting and technical problems that plague his early films, but you can tell that despite its flaws this is the work of an exciting director.

Agreed that I'm not trying to step on any toes, just curious.

I'd imagine this would be difficult for either of us to do, as with the amount of work Chad puts into this challenge his toes should be right next to his head, with all the bending over backwards without one iota a complaint. And I know we shower the kudos on him at the end of every challenge, I'd like to throw a Great Job! and Thanks For The HARD Work! to you now, Chad, in case you need a little motivation to keep your momentum going at the speed and consistency you are known and appreciated for.

Just got back from Sinister. Found the movie very creepy and was impressed with Ethan Hawke's acting. Not a perfect movie, but giving it a good rating because this is arguably the creepiest movie I've seen in the challenge thus far. 8/10

Mightysparks also applauded that. I'm assuming this is the version that features Dane Cook, correct?

Because I was subjected to this version and found my worst-viewed movie yet (But at least they did a convincing job with the hairstyles/wardrobe for the 1970s segment)

If anyone has a particular prize in mind let me know. I'll go with whatever the first response is.

Just don't step on my ingrown toenail! But yeah, I was planning on limiting them to a total of 3 again this year. They just don't get the amount of entries I'd like them to, so I tend to save the bulk of the prizes for the categories at the end since they cover a lot more participants. And adding an extra one or two or those might be in order this year too.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 8th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (Oct 1-31) P

Going through my shelves this morning for something to bring to work, I stumbled upon the DVD of Apartment 413. If memory serves, I got it as a freebie at a past Spooky Movie Film Festival, which I need to try to get to this weekend. My theme choice of the day, the subset film, Noroi, doesn't really fit the theme; so perhaps I'll subject myself to self torture tonight.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 8th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (Oct 1-31) P

Expanded review of Sinister:

- This movie was creepy - plain and simple. I went in looking to be frightened and it definitely delivered at multiple parts. This is most important.

- Ethan Hawke's performance was superb. Unfortunately, between the great job he did and the screenplay, I really felt the other characters were overshadowed and never felt much of a connection with any of them. Perhaps this was the director's intent, but it took a little away from the film for me.

- One scare seemed pretty little cheesy / forced to me
Spoiler:
where he was looking away from the computer screen and the face moved

- In between some of the scares, I found myself a little bit bored at times. Still though, I think the editing and time was fine - this was more of a screenplay issue and could have probably been solved with 1-2 more interesting characters.

Despite these few criticisms, I give Sinister a solid 8 out of 10 given how much it creeped me out. I think it's unfair criticism to call out a horror movie on "stereotypical" jump scares. That's like calling out a comedy on profanity or an action movie on explosions - it's expected and doesn't make or break the movie itself.

Finished watching Saw: The Final Chapter (2010)

I'm glad they ended the series, but I'm a little bummed thinking about it mostly because R-Rated Horror like that, is sorely missing from theaters.

I feel like every Horror movie that is released in U.S. theaters now involves some kind of ghost or exorcism.

Yeesh, the 'evil' in Amityville 4 (which takes place in Connecticut) comes from a fucking possessed lamp?! Granted, it is a pretty imposing lamp:

Yeah, most horror today is from ghosts and exorcisms, which are scary if you believe in that kind of stuff. I do miss the Saw films just because it's hard to have a great horror characters and they did a good job with Jigsaw. I do think we need more witch craft stories, though.

On the side, I am happy people are enjoying Sinister.

Yeah, same for me. I watched it and didn't think it was THAT bad. The ending sucked, but I liked the little boy and the dad. The other actors annoyed me, and the "solution" the parapsychologists come up with for what's happening makes no sense, but it's not the worst way to spend an hour and a half. I've definitely seen worse.

The first Saw was great and without being too hyperbolic, had one of the best endings I've ever seen in a movie. I did enjoy the second and third installments of the franchise, as well. The fourth, fifth, and sixth were all really nothing that special from my perspective. They had the same torture porn as the first few, but lacked a very intriguing story or plot twist. I had high hopes for the final chapter and while I do think it was better than the previous three, I was kind of disappointed in the writers in that
Spoiler:
the Dr. Gordon reveal/twist could have been executed so much better had they played their cards right and not incorporated him into the movie from the get-go
.

Agreed. I like that the good horror movies seem to be performing well at the box office. Will encourage studios to keep making them.

How about The Fields as the prize since there are so many.

Also here is an interesting VHS cover site:

I do agree. As they continue past 3, it got hard to watch. As for the ending
Spoiler:
I was a bit bummed they used Dr. Gordon since the original guys have said countless times Dr. Gordon will have nothing to do with it but it seems to just appease the viewer who continue to show up each and every year.

As for Sinister, I can seem them doing a sequel if it holds up. With Paranormal coming up, though, I'm not so sure. And as for Part 4, it looks like trash

Ghost/Horror films definitely scare the crap out of me.

The market has been saturated with those kind of films and I'm getting bored, as well as thinking it's old hat.

Agree. I loved Scream 4, so I won't completely call out remakes/sequels, but I can't remember the last time we got a good, original slasher movie. Unfortunately I don't think they're in high demand from the general public right now.

I'm halfway through the last one and liked them all so far. Even the ones from 4 and later have redeeming values. I will admit the kill at the beginning of the last one seemed really out of place and I half expected it to end up being some sort of store promotion/magic show. The cgi was pretty bad on the

I think a lot of the reason why I like them is because I'm watching them back to back and not waiting a year between releases. I was looking at some of the criticisms of them and a lot of that was stuff that was later resolved.

I loved that trap!

It might have been because of the nature/setup of that trap, but I thought it was pretty cool. It's hilarious that no one around the trap does anything but take pictures of their phone.

Also I might be crazy, but in one shot during that trap, I thought I saw someone with their arms up in the air cheering

Oh, crap. I watched Deep Red thinking it was tonight's subset. D'oh. Good thing I watched the short version, gives me the longer cut to watch Friday. I'm not catching most the subsets on the right days anyway.
