I'll throw in my 2 cents about Jaws. The issue with showing it to a kid isn't that viewing the film is terribly frieghtening, the issue is that once they've seen it they'll be affraid to go in the water, even swimming pools. I saw it when I was young and don't recall being very scared by the movie at all, but even to this day I get a little freeked when I swim in the ocean.

I saw it as a little kid (I was definitely under the age of 10 when I saw it), and my mother used to take me to the beaches of Long Island almost every other weekend during the summer - but I was never afraid to go in the water. I had my share of nightmares from scary movies (from "Jaws" - not sure), and it may be that i was just too stupid to be scared.

Ten? He's definitely ready for the 50s-60s horrors. I saw The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms in the theater - I would have been 7 - and I was very impressed when the Beast ate the cop. I've loved horror and S/F ever since.
The Beast needs to be on blu-ray.

If it was on blu ray I wopuld so buy it right away, Part of the reason I bought a PS3 was for the blu ray player.

We watched Poltergeist yesterday.... just as good as I remembered, and it had the desired effect on my son. Twice he was startled so much he jumped, then started that laughing/crying combo release of emotion (mostly laughing). He enjoyed learning the "facts"/lore of poltergeists, and immediately asked if there was a sequel (which I said yes, but it is not worth watching).
The cool thing is he liked this more than Childs Play (even citing the clown scene as scarier than Chucky). Prior to watching the movie, I'd explained to him about different aspects of movies, and that you did not need gore to make a good scary flick. He really appreciated that.
No nightmares.
Also watched the '78 version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers. It was pretty slow for him, but he watched the whole thing and thought it was "okay".
My problem is I want him to watch the Lugosi Dracula before watching Lee. He is immediately turned off by black and white movies as slow.

He thought the dog was cool.
On the other hand, the boobs elicited an "eww". He kind of noticed it when they were pods, but nothing too bad.
Btw, he loved the cliffhanger ending.

Have him watch the 1956 version. It's b&w but is anything but slow. I saw it first when I was about 12.

Watched Island of the Lost Souls last night. That one intrigued him, especially once the guy said "vivisection". The didn't show anything, but the thought of being cut open while alive creeped him out. For the first time we had to watch something else (Mad TV) to cool him down before bed.
Another cool thing is he wanted to watch it even though was black and white. I'm still not letting watch a bunch of movies until he watches the Universal classics.
