Like I said, I think that there are scenes in Raiders that are scarier, but if he hasn't seen anything like that then he could find JAWS scary.

I agree about the Saw movies as well. The first time I watchd Saw, it actually made me sick to my stomach, and I like horror movies.

Monster Squad introduces some of the top scary movie "badguys" but not in a scar them for life way. It'll make watching them in other movies a little less scary.

Definitely The Monster Squad and maybe some animated movies like Nightmare Before Christmas, Corpse Bride and Coraline (if you consider those three horror movies).

Killer Klowns. It's goofy fun, but actually scary at times it has just the right amount of B-movie goodness.

+1 on Coraline. That one was really good. I'm not a big fan of the Corpse Bride, and I've never seen the Nightmare Before Christmas.

Re: Need advice: intro to scary movies for my 10yr old boy

Like I said... Jaws... no way. :-)

We already saw Coraline... creepy, imo, and have seen parts of Nightmare before Christmas.

I hadn't thought about Lost Boys... could be fun since I grew up in Santa Cruz, where it was filmed, and worked at The Boardwalk when they filmed it. My son had a right-of-passage last summer riding the Giant Dipper. I think this will be at the top of the list. Right mix of comedy and horror... and familiarity with the location.

What about Drag Me To Hell? It's rated PG-13, and IMO isn't super intense, but there is some scares in it.

We saw The Lost Boys tonight. He had no issues... but we'll see how he sleeps tonight.

Hard to believe it was rated R...

Re: Need advice: intro to scary movies for my 10yr old boy

I grew up with the original Outer Limits series, scared the bejeezus out of me as a kid and I loved every minute of it. Sure I had dreams about little creatures that looked eerily similar to the little demons in The Gate and Subspecies crawling over the foot of my bed towards me when I was young, but I still love horror to this day.

Show him Jeepers Creepers... -kd5-

We're on a roll... watched Child's Play today. CommonSense said it could have been a PG-13 except for the foul language. It was the right amount of campiness and startles.

Another vote for starting with the Universal monsters. Horror movies are self-aware of the previous generations. You ought to show him Frankenstein before Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein, and Boris Karloff's Mummy before Brendan Frasier's Mummy.

Every child would understand King Kong and Godzilla. He's surrounded by people much larger than himself. The same with Invaders from Mars, because every child has been ignored when he has something to say.

Re: Need advice: intro to scary movies for my 10yr old boy

I think this is an interesting topic, especially since its something me and my fiancee have discussed recently as we have our first little one on the way and we have quite differing opinions in when a kid should see a certain movie.

Growing up, I was never really rating limited unless a movie was just blatantly sexual or messed up. It wasn't that my parents didn't care, its just that they made sure I knew right from wrong and real from fantasy. So pretty much whenever me and Dad would head to our local mom and pop video store, if I was willing to try it then he was willing to let me. I was strange in that I always wanted to rent scary movies, but I was also a chicken shit lol.

I was always particularly afraid of werewolves but looking back now, those movies are generally pretty tame by today's standards. I say let him try Silver Bullet, Howling etc. I also thought Jaws was a good one, Monster Squad as well.

Let us know what you decide and how it goes!

if you don't mind one of the deaths involves the victim featuring full on frontal male nudity

I'd recommend 'The Others' - on a really good surround sound setup.

05: An American Werewolf in London (1981) *big sex stuff here, but you can skip that*

the overhyped 'death by meat slicer' was no where as gory as I hoped.

Re: Need advice: intro to scary movies for my 10yr old boy

I'll throw in my 2 cents about Jaws. The issue with showing it to a kid isn't that viewing the film is terribly frightening; the issue is that once they've seen it they'll be afraid to go in the water, even swimming pools. I saw it when I was young and don't recall being scared by the movie while I was watching it, but even to this day I get a little freaked when I swim in the ocean.

^ I saw the tv ads for 'Piranha' when I was a kid and I got freaked out swimming in lakes.
