The Cabin in the Woods in the Regal Gallery Place multiplex in Washington, D.C. - April 2012
Sep. 30 (dusk)
1. Rosemary's Baby (1968) DVD--Hail Satan! A classic of paranoia. I'm not a huge fan of Mia Farrow, but she is perfect as poor Rosemary Woodhouse, the sweet Catholic girl who has been chosen to bear the child of the Devil. Can't wait to trade in my dingy Paramount DVD for a new Criterion Blu.
2. The Last Wave (1977) DVD--I enjoy movies that explore aspects of the supernatural from other cultures, so Peter Weir's film about the clash of Western and Aboriginal cultures is one of my favorites. Richard Chamberlain plays a Sydney lawyer who becomes entangled in Aboriginal magic and prophecies of rain that will end the world.
3. Kuroneko (1968) Blu-Ray--A mother and daughter are raped and murdered by rogue samurai, and return as vengeful spirits who lure samurai to their deaths. Kaneto Shindo's direction breathes pure creepy evil into this breathtakingly scary movie.
Oct. 1
4. Terror Tract (2000) TV--John Ritter plays a real estate agent showing houses with cursed pasts to a young couple. The highlight is Bryan Cranston fighting an evil monkey.
5. Street Trash (1987). YouTube--Somehow I missed this back in the day; the film makers think the hijinks are hilarious (I don't care how jolly the music is, an obese freak having sex with a female corpse isn't funny, not to mention playing "keepaway" with a severed penis). I just did not get why it has such a cult following. The gore scenes are well done, but the story overall is nonsense, not to mention it's incredibly sexist. The basic plot (such as it is) has to do with a scumbag liquor store owner selling booze that dissolves the bums who guzzle it, but there's also a psycho ex-Vietnam vet terrorizing the other hobos and the cop who wants to take him down, played, oddly enough, by a real-life Vietnam vet and cop.
6. Penumbra (2011) Netflix--I definitely enjoyed this nasty little shocker from Argentina. Lesson of the day: Know who you are renting to, and always have enough minutes on your phone.
7. Blacula (1972) DVD--William Marshall's performance belongs in a better film. He brings a genuine seriousness to his performance as an African prince turned vampire and set loose on early-70s funkified L.A.
8. Dark Fields (2009) Netflix--I really liked this story of human sacrifice across 3 generations of a cursed community that must kill children to bring a rain that heals them from a hideous disease. It helps that it has Dee Wallace, David Carradine, and Richard Lynch.
Oct. 2
9. Night of the Big Heat (1967). YouTube--A fun classic that used to turn up on late night TV when I was a kid. Very similar in plot to Island of Terror, except that instead of bone-sucking monsters, this film has evil aliens intent on incinerating humanity. The big alien reveal, though, makes them look like rolling blancmanges that you would think a person could easily outrun.
10. The Raven (1963). YouTube--Despite the star power here (Price, Lorre, Karloff, and an impossibly young Jack Nicholson half a decade before Easy Rider) The Raven is one of the lesser AIP Poe pictures, mostly because the comedy seems forced. Still, it's a darn good time.
11. The Fearless Vampire Killers (1967). StageVu--To quote Peter Griffin, "It insists upon itself." Polanski tries way too hard and mistakes frenetic action with comic timing. Beautiful cinematography, though, and the Grand Ball scene is a classic.
12. Sometimes Aunt Martha Does Dreadful Things (1971). YouTube--Best described as a mashup of Charlie's Aunt and Psycho. A couple of sorta-gay criminals are lying low in a Florida suburb. They seem to be involved, yet one guy, Stanley, is going out with girls although their touch makes him go crazy, while the other, Paul, who is masquerading as his aunt Martha as a disguise from the law, is psychotically jealous. Because that's how us gay guys roll.

13. Toxic Zombies (1980). YouTube--A bunch of dope growers get sprayed with a pesticide that turns them into zombies, and they prey on unsuspecting hikers. The lead actor and director, Charles McGrann, was killed in the WTC on 9/11.
Oct. 3
14. Shuttle (2008). TV--A quartet of young people board an airport shuttle at LAX and come to regret it. A very well-made film, but difficult to watch because the violence and suffering seemed too real.
15. Mansion of the Doomed (1976). YouTube--Finally, a YouTube movie that is actually fun instead of a grim slog. I had never heard of this flick before, but it has a terrific cast: Richard Basehart, Gloria Grahame, and a young Lance Henriksen as the doctor's first victim. Basehart plays an eye doctor who steals eyes from other people to give his daughter sight.
16. The Dentist (1996). Netflix--Another movie I had never gotten around to watching. To be honest, I found it trite and boring. I was expecting more Grand Guignol.
Oct. 4
16. Dr. Giggles (1992). DVD-- Now this is more like it. Dr. Giggles is much more fun than The Dentist with better deaths and a more "let's have some fun with the premise" mindset.
17. Satan's Triangle (1974). YouTube--I love that this was uploaded to YouTube with the opening intact. That ABC Movie of the Week opening just makes me feel 10 years old all over again. It's interesting how in the 1970s the Bermuda Triangle was a hot topic for paranormal enthusiasts and the subject of a slew of horror and sci-fi flicks, but 40 years later seems to have fallen off the pop culture radar. I remember the end scaring the bejeebers out of me.
18. The Devil's Daughter (1973). YouTube--I don't remember this one, but it's a lot of fun, following the trope of the innocent being mired in a conspiracy that everyone she meets is part of, similar to Rosemary's Baby and The Sentinel.
19. The Cabin in the Woods (2012) Blu-Ray--What a hoot! Whedon and Goddard's take on horror tropes is also a commentary on horror audiences, whose expectations sometimes bind film makers to making formulaic flicks to sell tickets instead of being able to take creative risks.
20. Tucker & Dale Vs. Evil (2010). Netflix--I'm glad I finally got around to watching this. What a hilariously goofy movie! Plus I really like Alan Tudyk in anything.
Oct. 5
21. V/H/S (2012) TV (VOD)--For me, "found footage" films work because they are the modern equivalent of the epistolary novel, telling a coherent story through letters and diaries, transposed now to iPhone videos. But because this is an anthology, there's no chance for any of the stories to build suspense, so we are left with a lot of noise and shocks that don't amount to much.
22. The Worm Eaters (1977). YouTube--The title isn't kidding--worms are eaten, in closeup and color. If you can stomach this very Troma-ish movie, it's about an old codger whose land is stolen by some evil developers, who he feeds worms and turns into worm-men.
23. The Mystery of the Wax Museum (1933). YouTube--Terrific Pre-Code shocker.
24. Wake Wood (2011) Netflix--One of the best horror films I've seen in a long time. Sometimes, dead is better.
25. Count Yorga, Vampire (1970) DVD--Tiny budget, but a lot of energy, and Robert Quarry brings a real gravitas to his role as the infernal Count Yorga.
26. The Dead (2012) Blu-Ray--Good movie! The reviews I read bagged on it because it uses the standard zombie tropes, but that's what I want--no fast zombies, no thinking zombies, just your standard shambling dead. Instead of the usual set pieces set at night in a confined space, this movie takes place in broad daylight in the West African savannah.
Oct. 6
24. Rubber (2010) Netflix--Amusing, but too precious by half and overly fond of its use of literary tropes. I have to admire the way the director makes the audience view Robert the tire as a thinking being.
25. Touch of Death (1988). YouTube--I didn't enjoy this, although the twist on the killer was original.
26. Zombies of Mora Tau (1957). TV--Would have been much more entertaining as an MST3K episode. Bizarrely, it's set in Africa, but not a single actual African in the film.
Oct. 7
27. Prom Night (1981) DVD--Despite its flaws, this is still a slasher classic.
28. Return of the Living Dead (1985) DVD--"Send more paramedics!"
29. I Walked With a Zombie (1943). TV--"Jane Eyre" in the West Indies
Oct. 8
30. Piranha (2010). TV--Inferior to the 1974 original, but still well worth watching.
31. Invitation to Hell (1984). YouTube--A blast from the 80s. Robert Urich plays an aerospace engineer who has to save his family from the clutches of a demonic Susan Lucci.
32. The Haunting (1999). TV--Every bit as awful as I remembered it. How do you screw up a movie with Liam Neeson and Lili Taylor?
33. The Exorcist (1973) DVD--How Father Karras got his groove back.
34. The Shining (1980) Blu-Ray--No beer and no TV make Homer do something something?
Oct. 9
35. Shaun of the Dead (2004) (with cast commentary track) Blu-Ray--How's that for a slice of fried gold?
36. The Living Dead at Manchester Morgue (1974). YouTube--An unknown gem. I would have loved to have watched this at the drive-in way back when.
37. More Brains: A Return to the Living Dead (2010). Other--A fascinating retrospective look at the backstage shenanigans behind the making of Return of the Living Dead
38. The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920) DVD--Despite being nearly a century old, this masterpiece of Weimar-era German Expressionism is still enormously influential in horror, especially zombie films.
39. The Simpsons, "Treehouse of Horror XXII"/ "Treehouse of Horror XXIII"/ The Paul Lynde Halloween Special (1976) YouTube--A camp classic/ Le Manoir du Diable (1896) YouTube-Cinema from the 19th century!
40. Deadgirl (2008) Netflix--Not really a zombie movie, but more of a morality play about ethics for teenagers, something like Bully or River's Edge. Two teen boys find a woman bound to a table in a disused building, and one decides to use her as a sex toy. Hilarity ensues.
Oct. 10
41. The Host (2006) Netflix--Watching a film set in Seoul makes me a little nostalgic for the place.
42. MST3K: Werewolf (1995). Other--A good Mike episode. "Where O Werewolf?" is a classic skit (and Mike looks adorable in a poodle skirt)
43. Creature From the Haunted Sea (1961). YouTube--Really needs Mike and the bots to make this murky, incoherent mess tolerable.
44. From Hell It Came! (2010). Other--Somehow a killer tree stump lacks a certain dramatic "oomph".
45. The Thing (1982) DVD--One of the few remakes that is better than its original. Kurt Russell + John Carpenter=Awesome
46. Tarantula (1955) YouTube--"Leo G. Carroll was over a barrel when Tarantula took to the hills"
47. Gayracula (1983). Other--Watching old gay porn gets pretty sad when you think about how almost all of the cast died way too young.
48. The Haunting (1963) TV--Not to take anything away from Lili Taylor's performance in the 1999 remake, but Julie Harris really captures Elinor's neediness and desperation. "I was expected!" THIS is how you do a haunted house picture.
Oct. 11
49. Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame (2010). TV-- Tsui Hark, wire-fu, and a spotlight on the Empress Wu, one of the memorable villains of Chinese history. Black magic kills Tang dynasty court officials by causing them to burst into flames. Detective Dee is on the case!
50. Dead of Night (1945). TV--If I had seen this as a child, I would have been more impressed. As it is, I was more interested in how the upper class accents used by the characters in the different stories contrast sharply with the chav talk one hears in British films today. Everyone praises the ventriloquist story, but I thought the bit with the haunted mirror was much scarier.
51. The Norliss Tapes (1973) YouTube--A less successful Dan Curtis TV-movie that was clearly intended to be a series pilot. A missing reporter's tapes reveal a story about a sculptor who has risen from the grave to complete a work that will allow a demon to enter our world.
52. Deep Red (1975) YouTube--Terrific giallo, although Dario Argento cheats the viewer because initially it looks like this will be a supernatural thriller, then it turns into a serial killer story.
53. Mother's Day (2010). TV--Interesting remake. Didn't love it. The only genuine horror element here is that Mommy is a baby thief.
Oct. 12
54. Chopping Mall (1986) DVD--The Daleks would kick the Protector robots' asses. Nice Eating Raoul shout-out in the opening scene.
55. Slaughter High (1984) DVD-- The plot was lifted from Terror Train, and the cast are a pack of Brits trying to sound like Americans, with varying degrees of success. The poor kid who played the killer committed suicide around the time of the movie's release. It's his only screen credit.
56. Class of 1999 (1990) DVD-- I liked this a lot. Not a great film, but killer robots, Malcolm McDowell, and Pam Grier make this a total hoot.
57. The Stepford Wives (1975) YouTube--Ten years ago, I thought this movie was scary but quaint; who knew we'd be forced to agitate for the social equality of women all over again? Thanks a heap, GOP!
Oct. 13
58. Blood of Dracula (1957) YouTube--It's hard to see poor Nancy as the villain here-- her rotten father and his new bride ship her off to boarding school and she gets turned into a vampire by an evil teacher. None of that is her fault, so she really doesn't deserve what happens to her.
59. MST3K: I Was a Teenage Werewolf (1957) YouTube--Poor Michael Landon plays a teen with anger issues who is used by Whit Bissell as a subject in a hypnotism experiment that turns him into a werewolf. Oddly, he had hairy palms before the hypnotism. The references in the riffs from Mike and the 'bots are really dated; Richard Jewell jokes?
60. Forget Me Not (2009). Netflix--This is the kind of movie that really needs a noisy audience to watch it with, since it can't really stand on its own. I wanted to yell, "Don't reach for that girl in the pond, she's going to drown you!", "Don't go in there!" and so on.
Oct. 14
61. Interview With the Vampire (1994) DVD--My partner and I quote this film to each other more than any other, particularly when we're enjoying wine; "I want some more!"
62. Tremors (1990) DVD--A monster movie with energy and a real sense of fun. Kevin Bacon really sells it! "Can you fly, you sucker?"
63. Little Shop of Horrors (1986) DVD--One of my favorite musicals, I just wish Frank Oz had done a better job directing the film. At least he kept the original Greek chorus (2 of whom also starred in the TV show "Martin") and the incomparable Ellen Greene as Audrey. Need to get the Blu-Ray with the restored original ending.
Oct. 15
64. Colin (2008) Netflix--I was pleasantly surprised by the strength of the writing and direction of this film, showing the collapse of London in the zombie apocalypse as it follows the peregrinations of one of the undead.
65. Celluloid Bloodbath (2012) Netflix--A fun collection of horror movie trailers and short interviews.
66. Re-Animator (1986) DVD--Jeffery Combs was born to play Herbert West. Absolutely one of the funniest and most repulsive movies ever made.
67. Young Frankenstein (1974) DVD--Peter Boyle does not get enough credit for his versatility as a character actor. His duet with Gene Wilder in "Puttin' On the Ritz" always gets me on the floor.
68. Trilogy of Terror (1975) YouTube--The first 2 segments are OK, but the Zuni doll finish is a horror classic.
69. Curse of the Undead (1959) StageVu--An entertaining vampire western. It's a shame Eric Fleming died so young, he might have had a successful film career.
70. Frankenhooker (1990). Other How can you not love a picture with exploding hookers?
Oct. 16
71. The Frozen Dead (1967). YouTube--Dana Andrews plays a Nazi scientist, 20 years after the end of the war, hiding in London while experimenting on the bodies of frozen German soldiers. Then his niece and her friend show up, and well, things happen. . . Why do severed heads in horror movies develop ESP?
72. The Pit (1981). YouTube--This is the kind of movie that needs a remake instead of classics like Fright Night. It has a good idea, but flawed execution. And who wouldn't want their own pit full of hungry monsters?
Oct. 17
73. The Loreley's Grasp (1976). YouTube--Fun Eurotrash monster movie, basically a pretext for a cheesecake fest.
74. Wishmaster (1997) DVD--Andrew Divoff is terrific as the human face of the djinn. It's always surprising to me that good actors never seem to break out of playing low-budget films.
75. Shivers (1975). YouTube--Not my favorite Cronenberg, but still effective. Parasites invade an apartment building, unleashing the ids of its hosts.
76. The Unknown (1927) TV--Lon Chaney was an amazing actor, and here he indulges in some body horror decades before Cronenberg showed up, plus a young Joan Crawford in her sex kitten phase.
77. Waxwork (1988) DVD--I haven't watched this in years; what a terrific movie! Plus as a tribute the horror genre, it could have knocked off most of the checklist if I had watched it earlier.
78. Noroi-The Curse (2005). YouTube--Slow and plodding. I like the idea of an ancient demon being unleashed by modern negligence, but the film is just too long.
Oct. 18
79. Horror of Dracula (1958) TV--The first and best of the Hammer Dracula series.
80. The Lift (1983). YouTube--I liked the American remake better.
Oct. 19
81. M (1931) DVD--Starting with a child singing a horrible nursery rhyme in game, Fritz Lang's masterpiece M descends into the depths. Absolutely amazing performance from Peter Lorre as the child murderer.
82. Ghostbusters (1984) DVD--"If someone asks you if you are a god, you say YES!" Still funny after all these years.
83. Apollo 18 (2011) TV--The key to "found footage" films is that we are voyeurs to supposed real events caught in the act, but Apollo 18 comes off as sterile, artificial and mind-bendingly stupid.
Oct. 20
84. White Zombie (1932). YouTube--Ordinarily, I love pre-Code horror, but the sound is so muddy it's difficult to understand, and the acting is stuck in that stilted, stagey style one sees in early talkies. However, Lugosi stands out as Murder Legendre the voodoo master.
85. The Lair of the White Worm (1988) DVD--Ken Russell mangles Bram Stoker's novel, but the highlight of the film is Amanda Donohoe's deliciously over-the-top performance.
86. Dracula: Dead and Loving It (1995) DVD--Not as good as his earlier comedies, but Mel Brooks still can make Bram Stoker's vampire count hilarious. It helps to have seen the Lugosi film because this borrows heavily from it.
Oct. 21
87. The Birds (1963) DVD--Still a classic.
88. The Mist (2007) DVD--For my money, one of the best adaptations of a King book. The end still packs a wallop.
89. Chosen Survivors (1974) DVD--The government kidnaps and drugs a cross-section of Americans and shoves them into a bunker in New Mexico, ostensibly to ensure the survival of the human race after nuclear war. They just didn't expect vampire bats.
90. Land of the Dead (2005) DVD--A lot of people dislike intelligent zombies, but it's been done in other films.
Oct. 22
91. Shocker (1989) TV--Cheesy 80s fun. Mitch Pileggi (Skinner on The X-Files) plays an executed murderer who lives through electricity and is chasing future director of Battleship Peter Berg to wreak his vengeance.
92. The Devil Rides Out (1968). YouTube--Christopher Lee plays the hero for once in this epic tale of black magic and devil worship in 1920s England. What would Jeeves and Wooster think?
Oct. 23
93. Thirst (2009). Netflix--A Korean priest becomes a vampire in this awesomely disturbing flick from the director of Oldboy.
94. The Grudge (2004) Blu-Ray--This was scary back before we were inundated by scary child ghost movies from Japan. Still, Sarah Michelle Gellar got a trip to Tokyo.
Oct. 24
95. The Mummy (1932) DVD--For my money, Boris Karloff's most expressive role.
96. The Mummy's Hand (1940) DVD--The first and the best of the cheesy Universal sequels, this established the mummy mythology of Kharis and tana leaves.
97. The Mummy's Tomb (1942) DVD--Lon Chaney Jr. takes over as Kharis.
98. The Mummy's Ghost (1944) DVD--Kharis turns up in Cajun country as seen by Hollywood because this bears no resemblance to the LA I know.
99. The Mummy's Curse (1944) DVD--Kharis and Anaka rise from the swamp to terrorize Cajuns some more.
100. Cockneys Vs. Zombies (2012). Other--After East London construction workers free the living dead from an excavated tomb, a gang of old age pensioners and young wannabe gangsters have to fight for survival, with less posh accents than Shaun of the Dead. Gory and funny, this really deserves a bigger distribution.
101. The Thompsons (2012). Other--A sequel to The Hamiltons, in which the vampire family finds another group of blood drinkers in rural England.
Oct. 25
102. Severance (2006) Netflix-- A film that is a cross between The Office and Deliverance as employees of the London branch of an American defense contractor head into the forests of Hungary for a weekend retreat, only to find themselves the victims of unknown killers.
103. Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter (2012) Blu-Ray--I never learned about this chapter in Honest Abe's life! It would have been more fun for history fans if the details of Lincoln's life had been more accurate so that the vampire mythology would fit in more seamlessly
104. The Skull (1965). YouTube--Peter Cushing plays a collector of occult objects who acquires the skull of the Marquis de Sade. Hilarity ensues.
Oct. 26
105. The Ghost and Mr. Chicken (1966) YouTube--Don Knotts never gets his due as a screen comedian. This movie's a classic.
106. The House That Would Not Die (1970). YouTube--One of the benefits of TV is that it gives a third act to the careers of actors whose Hollywood glamour has faded. Case in point: the awesome Barbara Stanwyck, starring in this haunted house drama when a mere 2 decades before she was making classic films with Burt Lancaster and Gary Cooper.
107. Crowhaven Farm (1970). YouTube--An ABC Movie of the Week that is actually worth watching, about a couple who move into a spooky old New England farmhouse. The wife starts to dream about Puritan witch trials and a creepy young girl with a secret moves in with them.
108. CHUD II: Bud the CHUD (1988) DVD-- Not really related to the first film, since Gerrit Graham is more of a zombie and not a mutated monster, this is played for laughs. Not bad if you're in the mood for downmarket 80s horror-comedy. And how badly had Robert Vaughan's career crashed since The Man from Uncle that he's in this?
109. The Innkeepers (2011) Netflix--Incredibly effective and eerie ghost story.
Oct. 27
110. Psycho (1960) DVD--Hitchcock is still the master of horror and suspense. His adaptation of Robert Bloch's story is still scary as hell, even after all these years.
111. Carrie (1976) DVD--There's no way the new remake can match the terror of the final scene in the original.
112. Dracula, Prince of Darkness (1965) TV--My only problem with this sequel is the weak third act.
113. Dracula Has Risen From the Grave (1968) TV--Much better than the previous film, a highlight of the Hammer Dracula series.
Oct. 28
114. Silent Night, Deadly Night (1984) YouTube--Naughty or nice? BWAHAHAHA! A disturbed teenager dresses like Santa Claus and slays the naughty. I'm glad I finally saw this because I remember there was a mass of outrage over the film's blend of gore and Christmas. Fun Fact: Leo Geter, who plays one of the victims, lived in my dormitory hall in college.
115. The Omega Man (1971) DVD--Sandy has me feeling apocalyptic.
116. Maximum Overdrive (1986). YouTube--It's easy to criticize Stephen King's only directorial effort, but taken for what it is, it's not that bad.
117. Duel (1971). YouTube--It's a shame this film has remained unknown because it's far superior to the usual run of made-for-TV movies, probably because Steven Spielberg directed it before he found success with Jaws.
Oct. 29
118. An American Werewolf in London (1981) DVD--I'm not a huge John Landis fan , but this is still a classic werewolf film. The trouble with making films contemporary, though, is that they become anchored to the time they were made. AAWiL is forever anchored to 1981, especially with the final credits card offering congrats to the wedding of Diana and Charles.
119. Curse of the Werewolf (1961) DVD--Enjoyable, but a little hard to swallow Oliver Reed as a Spanish werewolf. Grrr, arrghh, olé !
120. Laid To Rest 2 (2011). TV--*I watched this on Fearnet On Demand for the checklist, but it sucked me in. Chromeskull ought to become an iconic Halloween character.
Oct. 30
121. Chillerama (2011). Netflix--How did the producers of the juvenile crapfest rope in a good actor like Ray Wise? The first segment with the giant killer sperm was stupid, but the gay werebear segment was mildly interesting (Brent Corrigan clothed; how novel!), and I kinda liked the zombie story.
122. Faceless (1987). YouTube--Jess Franco rips off Georges Franju. And what the hell is Telly Savalas doing in this?
123. The Devil's Rain (1975). YouTube--So much about this film makes no sense, but if you just suspend your disbelief and go with it, it's a fun ride.
124. The Devil's Carnival (2011). Netflix--From the makers of Repo: The Genetic Opera, a musical morality tale that borrows from Aesop's fables. Loved it.
Oct. 31
125. Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982). YouTube--"Happy, happy Halloween, Halloween, Halloween! Happy, happy Halloween, Silver Shamrock!"
126. Bugs Bunny's Howl-o-ween Special (1974). Youtube A relic from the 70s, this is a Halloween special cobbled together Frankenstein-style from clips of Warner Brothers animated shorts. /South Park, "A Nightmare on Facetime" (2012) TV--Randy Marsh goes Shining/ It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown!, (1966) TV/ Key & Peele, "Halloween", (2012) TV
127. Hellraiser (1987) DVD--I can't believe Clive Barker's classic turns 25 this year.
128. The Last Man on Earth (1964). TV--The most faithful version of Matheson's novel and one of Price's better performances. It's a shame Will Smith's film couldn't have been this good.
129. Trick 'r Treat (2007). Blu-Ray--Best Halloween movie ever, with an EC Comics gloss!
130. Murder Party (2008). DVD--Absolutely gonzo comedy.
131. The Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires (1974). YouTube--An interesting collaboration between the Shaw Brothers and Hammer that takes advantage of the kung-fu fad of the early 70s. Loved it.

Re: The 8th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31) ***The List Thread

List is Final!
Oct 1st
1. Terror in the Aisles *** 1/2 / Blu-Ray / 84 min / 1984
Great movie to start with as I now want to watch all the movies featured in this.
Oct 2nd
2. Chopping Mall *** / DVD / 77 min / 1986
Enjoyable movie with some pretty good special effects. Seems to get better every time I see it.
Best Part: The exploding head was good times to the max.
Oct 3rd
3. Screaming in High Heels *** / New / DVD / 63 min / 2011
Decent doc about the 3 major Scream Queens. When watching it though I wished it was more about the production of some of these movies.
Best Part: Made me nostalgic for the direct to video era. I know it still exists, but it's just not the same.
Oct 4th
4. Master of Horror: The Washingtonians *1/2 / DVD / 57 min / 2007
This was stupid. Really stupid.
Oct 5th
5. Hellraiser ***1/2 / Blu-Ray / 94 min / 1987
A little dull in spots but a good movie. Plus the special effects still hold up quite well.
Best Part: How many shirts Frank ruined.
6. Xtro *1/2 / New / DVD / 81 min / 1983
Dull and the end was a total anticlimax. I had higher expectations for this. Maryam d'Abo looked good naked though.
Best Part: Anal ease. Anal ease everywhere.
Oct 6th
7. Jason X **1/2 / DVD / 91 min / 2002
Some of the jokes and CGI were pretty bad but it was a pretty enjoyable flick.
Best Part:Brodski punching Jason in the head as they fall to Earth. I'd never noticed that before.
Oct 7th
8. Blackenstein ** / New / DVD / 87 min / 1973
Poorly edited and not as funky as I had hoped. When Malcomb switched the two patients DNA shots how come only one of them became a Blackenstein?
Best Part: The monster looked and sounded like he was sleepwalking the whole movie.
9.MST3K: Night of the Blood Beast ***1/2 / New / DVD / 91 min / 1995
It's Thanksgiving tomorrow so I thought it would be a good time to finally watch this.
Best Part: Steve!
Oct 8th
10. Uncle Sam ** / New / Blu-Ray / 89 min / 1996
Everyone in this movie looked the same. It was odd.
Best Part: The stinger after the credits.
Oct 9th
11. The Haunted World of El Superbeasto ** / New / Blu-Ray / 77 min / 2009 / Wildcard
This was a 22 minute show stretched out to 77 minutes. Definitely not as good as I had hoped.
Best Part: The animation. Very Ren and Stimpy.
Oct 10th
12. Survival of the Dead *1/2 / New / Blu-Ray / 90 min / 2009
Uneventful. Romero's movies are steadily going down hill.
Oct 11th
13. It's The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown ***** / DVD / 25 min / 1966 / Wildcard
An October classic.
Oct 12th
14. Fright Night (1985) ****1/2 / DVD / 106 min / 1985
Great movie. I haven't seen the remake yet but that's next. Lets see how that goes...
15. Fright Night (2011) *** / New / Blu-Ray / 106 min / 2011
Pretty solid movie but no where near the original. The special effects from the 1985 movie also looked way better than the CGI used in this one.
Best Part: Dr. Who. I'm giving it an extra half star for his performance alone.
Oct 13th
16. Final Exam *1/2 / New / DVD / 90 min / 1981
Took forever to get going. But it was neat to see Javier Bardem in his first role (the killer).
Best Part: When Javier popped out of a garbage can to stab a dude, just like Oscar the Grouch.
17. Gutterballs *** / New / DVD / 96 min / 2008
Fun slasher with a not so great ending. The gore effects were pretty good but the rape scene... went a little long...
Oct 14th
18. Dead Alive **** / Blu-Ray / 97 min / 1992
Crazy gore effects.
Oct 15th
19. Demons **1/2 / DVD / 88 min / 1985
I liked the end but the movie felt a little disjointed.
Oct 16th
20. Demons 2 *** / New / DVD / 91 min / 1986
Pretty much the same as the first movie but I preferred this one a little bit more.
Best Part: The flying demon muppet.
Oct 17th
21. Island of Lost Souls **** / New / Blu-Ray / 71 min / 1932
Really liked this one. And Bella Lugosi did a really great Robin Williams impersonation.
Oct 18th
22. Jack-O * / DVD / 88 min / 1995
Watched this one for the catty commentary.
Best Line: Shit pickle.
Oct 19th
23. Masters of Horror: Cigarette Burns ***** / DVD / 58 min / 2005
Still my favorite of the series. Norman Reedus was just phoning it in though.
Oct 20th
24. Devil ** / New / Blu-Ray / 80 min / 2010
Not bad, just forgettable.
Oct 21st
25. Killer Party ** / New / DVD / 91 min / 1986
Like Final Exam it took a while to get going, this was done better as it did not bore you to tears. The trouble was when the killing started it was very rushed. The movie shifted to hardcore comedy when the possession scenes kicked in.
Best Part: The Music. Strange music video at the beginning and the completely emotionless "Best Times" title song = unintentional hilarity.
Oct 22nd
26. Sledgehammer 1/2* / New / DVD / 85 min / 1983
What? I kept asking myself this.
27. The Toolbox Murders **1/2 / New / Blu-Ray / 94 min / 1978
Pretty good, I was expecting it to be way more brutal than what it was though.
Oct 23rd
28. Scary Movie 3 ** / New / Blu-Ray / 85 min / 2003
The most dated of the series that I have seen so far. This also felt really long but it was only 85 minutes and 9 of those were the credits.
29. Scream ****1/2 / DVD / 111 min / 1996
Really good slasher. I'd forgotten how few kills there were in this.
Oct 24th
30. Twins of Evil **1/2 / New / Blu-Ray / 87 min / 1971
Pretty good. We need more Hammer on Blu
Best Part: The uh...twins.
31. MOH: Dream Cruise **1/2 / New / DVD / 120 min / 2007
I'm not sure if when this aired on TV it was 2 hours long but I think the series would have benefited from a longer run time.
32. Killer klowns From Outer Space **1/2 / Blu-Ray / 86 min / 1988
The special effects, directing and acting were all pretty good for such a low budget movie.
Worst Part: This is how Juggalos start.
Oct 25th
33. Predators **1/2 / New / Blu-Ray / 107 min / 2010
Better than I thought it was going to be.
34. Street Trash ** / New / DVD / 101 min / 1987
Torgo's life really took a turn for the worse after he left the Master. Crazy movie but there was just to much going on.
35. Scream 2 ****1/2 / DVD / 120 min / 1997
Every bit as good as the original. The soundtrack was good too, 90's as fuck.
Oct 26th
36. My Soul to Take ** / New / Blu-Ray / 108 min / 2010
This was OK but nothing of note. CGI blood is one of the worst things to happen to horror movies.
37. Dreamworks Spooky Stories **** / New / Blu-Ray / 102 min / VAR
A pretty good compilation of Halloween themed stories.
38. Things 1/2* / New / DVD / 85 min / 1989
The most amateurish movie I have ever seen. Nothing in this movie makes sense but it did make me laugh a lot.
Oct 27th
39. Scream 3 **1/2 / DVD / 106 min / 2000
Huge drop off from the first two movies. The whole thing took such a leap of logic to make this thing plausible.
40. Carnosaur *1/2 / New / DVD / 83 min / 1983
I think the movie could have been better if they didn't spend so much time in the lab. But the movie was severely disjointed and kind of boring. It did have a clever idea though.
Best Part: The guy who didn't know how a 24 hour clock works.
41. The Cabin in the Woods **** / Blu-Ray / 95 min / 2012
One of the best horror movies in a long time.
Oct 28th
42. Slumber Party Massacre ** / DVD / 76 min / 1982
Decent slasher, lots of kills/lots of boobs.
43. Slumber Party Massacre 2 *1/2 / DVD / 76 min / 1987
This was a weird fucking movie.
Oct 29th
44. Slumber Party Massacre 3 ** / DVD / 87 min / 1990
The women in this one were some of the most useless characters I've seen in a horror movie. And for this genre that's saying something.
45. Detention *** / New / Blu-Ray 93 min / 2011
An odd, funny movie. I'll probably see this movie many times.
Oct 30th
46. Scanners *** / New / DVD / 103 min / 1981
First time watching it in full, I had seen bits and pieces before. The acting from Stephen Lack was super wooden, I haven't seen him in anything else so I don't know if that's what they were going for or if he's just a terrible actor.
47. The Rocky Horror Picture Show ***** / Blu-Ray / 100 min / 1975
One of my favorite movies.
Oct 31st
48. Scream 4 ***1/2 / Blu-Ray / 111 min / 2011
A return to form. They really didn't have much for Dewey to do though, he just sort of drove around a lot.
49. Trick 'r Treat *** / Blu-Ray / 82 min / 2008
Really good movie that just has the Halloween Feel.
50. Invader Zim: Halloween Spectacular of Spooky Doom ***** / DVD / 22 min / 2001 / Wildcard
This is a Halloween staple for me now.
51. Dead Space: Downfall **1/2 / Blu-Ray / 74 min / 2008
This was alright but I fell like I will forget all about it in a week. There was animated penis though. Maybe I'll remember that.
52. The Evil Dead ***** / DVD / 85 min / 1982
A Classic. After watching so many bad movies this year it was good to end things on a high note.

DVD Talk Legend
Re: The 8th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31) ***The List Thread
My Personal October Horror Movie Challenge History: 2007 - 100; 2008 - 50; 2009 - 71; 2010 - 78; 2011 - 52
2012 Goal - 60 (Normally my goal is always 100, even though I've only hit that mark one time. This month, I'll be taking a vacation during the month--poor planning, I know.
If I can reach 60, it should help me to come close to seeing all the unwatched horror content on my DVR and in my collection.)
October 1
1. When A Stranger Calls (2006) ☼ [Cable/DVR] - Annoying babysitter and kids. Found myself rooting for the psychopath to take care of them.
2. Friday the 13th (2009) [DVD] - Grew up a fan of the series. I like the remake better than several of the sequels to the original series.
3. Fright Night (2011) ☼ [Cable/DVR] - Better than I expected it to be. Learned that Colin Farrell can play a wicked vampire character.
4. The Shark is Still Working (2007) ☼ [BD] - Couldn't hold off watching the new Jaws release, saved this documentary for the challenge.
October 2
5. A Lonely Place to Die (2011) ☼ [Cable/DVR] - Solid film labled as British horror/thriller. Not recommended if you have a fear of heights. Or a fear of being chased and killed.
6. Tales From the Crypt - Death of a Salesman / As Ye Sow / Forever Ambergris / Food for Thought (2003) ☼ [DVD] - The stars are the best part. Tim Curry plays an entire family in the first episode of Season 5.
7. 28 Days Later (2002) ☼ [Cable/DVR] - Thought this was just ok. I've enjoyed other zombie films more.
October 3
8. Piranha (2010) [Cable/DVR] - Favorite part of this film remains the cameo of Richard Dreyfuss in the beginning. Discovered according to imdb, that it's reported that he donated his pay for the movie to charity.
9. Anaconda (1997) [Cable/DVR] - The name cast makes this an enjoyable movie. And it's not their acting, but rather seeing several of them meet their demise that's particularly fun.
10. Cabin Fever (2002) [Cable/DVR] - Pancakes! The over the top comedy bits included in this one seems out of place.
October 4
11. Cherry Falls (2000) ☼ [Cable/DVR] - The over the top comedy bits included in this one are very much in place. That doesn't mean the movie is any good.
12. Ghost Ship (2002) ☼ [Cable/DVR] - Bizarre introduction with a massive death scene. Average ghost tale.
13. Wrong Turn (2003) [DVD] - Discovered this film last year, and it's a new horror favorite. Very intense throughout.
14. Frozen (2010) [Cable/DVR] - Well done film in the horror/thriller genre. Have never went skiing, but it was easy to put yourself in the position of the characters
October 5
15. Monkey Shines (1988) ☼ [Cable/DVR] - Counting this as a first-time watch, though the monkey with the hair dryer seemed very familiar to me. Might have seen this when I was younger, but everything else seemed new.
16. Tales From the Crypt - People Who Live in Brass Hearses / Two for the Show / House of Horror / Well Cooked Hams (2003) ☼ [DVD] - Not every episode is a winner, but I really enjoy this series. Even moreso when I remember picking the individual seasons up for $3 each at Big Lots years ago.
October 6
17. Cat's Eye (1985) ☼ [Cable/DVR] - I thought the three segments got better each time and also more bizarre.
October 7
18. Grace (2009) [Cable/DVR] - I don't know what prompted me to give this film a 2nd chance. It's an uncomfortable watch.
October 8
19. Tales From the Crypt - Creep Course / Came the Dawn / Oil's Well That Ends Well / Half-Way Horrible (2003) ☼ [DVD] - The guy who does the voice for the Crypt Keeper actually appeared in one of the episodes (OWTEW).
October 9
20. Paranormal Activity (2007) [Cable/DVR] - 2nd time viewing. Still believe this is an above average film. Compared to a movie like Blair Witch Project, I thought this was way better.
21. Paranormal Activity 2 (2010) ☼ [Cable/DVR] - Took a long time to get going. Once it did, it was fun.
22. Paranormal Activity 3 (2011) ☼ [Cable/DVR] - Not knowing much about this series of films, I fully expected the quality to down with each entry. Have been surprised to learn that's not the case.
23. The Cabin in the Woods (2011) ☼ [DVD-Redbox] - I managed to avoid all spoilers for this one, while knowing it's received a great deal of acclaimed. I'm anxious to rewatch this one before deciding if it lived up to the hype.
24. Spooky House (Wild Card) (2004) ☼ [DVD] - Family friendly fare. I thought it was average, but the kids were entertained which is what I had hoped for going in.
25. Leprechaun (1993) ☼ [Cable/DVR] - Wouldn't have given this one a chance except I knew Jennifer Aniston was in it. The highlight ended up being seeing Mark Holton in this one...famous for a great movie quote, "It's Enrico Pallazzo!"
October 10
26. Rest Stop (2006) ☼ [Cable/DVR] - This film falls apart as soon as Joseph (Joey) Lawrence's character enters into it. No big surprise, I guess.
27. Mother's Day (2010) ☼ [Cable/DVR] - Enjoyable home invasion film. A little twist to have the intruders burst in "on accident" and for there to be a group of people at home.
October 11
28. They Live (1988) ☼ [Cable/DVR] - I'm not sure how I'd overlooked this film for so long. It took a bit to get going, but then provided quite a punch.
29. Timber Falls (2007) ☼ [Cable/DVR] - 2nd challenge film involving terror in the backwoods of West Virginia. Needless to say, I'm in no hurry to pay a visit to the Mountaineer State.
October 12
30. V/H/S (2012) ☼ [Cable/DVR] - This found footage film had a few good moments. Unfortunately the emphasis is on few. The different segments meant there was no build up, instead I eagerly awaited the ending.
October 13
31. Shuttle (2008) ☼ [Cable/DVR] - Above average horror-thriller. Didn't care so much for the first revealed twist but the reveal towards the end was unexpected.
October 14
32. P2 (2007) ☼ [Cable/DVR] - Maybe the strangest horror title ever since there's no way you would guess what this is about based solely on that. A parking garage scenario is a natural dark atmosphere. The bad guy and his motivation was way over the top though.
33. Roxy Hunter and the Mystery of the Moody Ghost (Wild Card) (2004) ☼ [DVD] - Felt the same about this one as my previous wild card entry: Family friendly fare. I thought it was average, but the kids were entertained which is what I had hoped for going in.
34. The Skeleton Key (2005) ☼ [DVD] - Didn't care for this one all that much. Saw the twist coming well in advance of it happening which was disappointing.
October 15
35. American Horror House (2012) ☼ [Cable/DVR] - Drawn to this quirkly little film by seeing that Morgan Fairchild was in it. First dialogue was a girl singing "Itsy Bitsy Spider" causing me to remember Friday the 13th, part 2.
36. Apollo 18 (2011) ☼ [Cable/DVR] - A little amazed at the popularity of "footage films" such as this one. Most of them seem to hover around being mediocre in my opinion.
October 16
37. The Tripper (2006) ☼ [Cable/DVR] - Horror movie with Ronald Reagan and Paul Reubens (Pee Wee Herman). Yep, strange and bad.
October 29
38. The Collector (2009) [Cable/DVR] - 2nd time viewing. Thoughts echo my impressions from last year. Very intense as long as you suspend your sense of belief. Also, I wouldn't recommend this for anyone who loves animals.
39. The Innkeepers (2011) ☼ [Cable/DVR] - Found this one to be simply ok due to it's slow pace through much of the film.
40. The Wolfman (2010) ☼ [Cable/DVR] - I don't know if I would have checked this movie out, except for knowing Anthony Hopkins was in a starring role. He elevates anything he's in to being worth a look.
October 30
41. Let Me In (2010) ☼ [Cable/DVR] - I might be in the minority, but I enjoyed this film much more than the original Let the Right One In
42. The Blob (1988) [Cable/DVR] - Really like this one. Going to have to check out the 1950s original in a future challenge.
43. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) [DVD] - I need to improve my record keeping skills. Thought this was a first time viewing, but quickly realized I'd seen this before. Checked and discovered it on my 2008 list. Guess I was confused because of the sequels/remakes, etc.
44. Red Riding Hood (2011) ☼ [Cable/DVR] - I found myself chuckling during scenes that should have been considered scary. The werewolf attack didn't seem very real.
October 31...and into the night
45. The Hitcher (1986) ☼ [Cable/DVR] - Without seeing them back-to-back, I believe I prefer the remake to this one which seems dated. I do like how tense this becomes just moments after it begins.
46. Buried (2010) ☼ [BD] - One of this year's favorites. Gripping from the very first moment to the bitter end.
47. Joy Ride (2001) [DVD] - Revisiting one of my favorite discoveries from last year now that I have it on DVD. Looks like there's several alternate endings. Those may have to wail til October 2013.
48. The Fly (1986) ☼ [Cable/DVR] - Finally checked off another unwatched classic. I hesitate to add up how many others are out there that I haven't seen. One day...
49. Satan's Little Helper (2004) ☼ [Cable/DVR] - Quirky little film here where the killer's actions drew a few chuckles.
50. Creepshow (1982) ☼ [DVD] - Favorite segment involved a standoff between 2 comedic icons--Ted Danson and Leslie Nielsen.
51. Creepshow 2 (1987) ☼ [DVD] - Couldn't measure up to the first film due to the lack of star power.
52. Tales From the Crypt: Till Death Do We Part (Wild Card) (1983) ☼ [DVD] - One leftover TftC episode that I watched earlier in the month.
☼ = First Time Viewing
List is FINAL
Summary - Happy with my total, surging at the end to match what I did in 2011. Taking a much needed vacation in the middle of the month kept the number from being much higher. Also, pleased to see nearly 80% of my entries were first time viewings.
Favorite first time viewings: Buried, The Fly, Mother's Day
36 Entries Watched from DVR (a minor goal was to clear it of horror content, which I might have done if I hadn't added to it at the same time!)
14 Entries Watched on DVD
2 Entries Watched on BD
40 First Time Viewings
2012 Goal - 60 (Normally my goal is always 100, even though I've only hit that mark one time. This month, I'll be taking a vacation during the month--poor planning, I know.

October 1

October 1
1. Kuroneko* (Kaneto Shindo, 1968, Blu-Ray) Beautiful ghost story of vengeance. 8.5/10
2. The Drive-In Massacre* (Stu Segall, 1977, DVD) Well it didn't take long to find the first major suckfest of the challenge. 2.5/10
3. The Driller Killer* (Abel Ferrara, 1979, DVD) A solid piece of gritty exploitative horror 7/10
4. Paintball* (Daniel Benmayor, 2009, TV) Unremarkable but harmless stalk and kill in the woods film. Could be better but could be worse. 4.5/10
5. Satan's Slave* (Norman J. Warren, 1976, DVD) A well acted and unsettling Satanic cult film. 7.5/10
6. Killdozer* (Jerry London, 1974, Stream) Not great but hey, it's a killer bulldozer, how bad can it be? 5/10
7. Nightmares Come At Night* (Jess Franco, 1970, DVD) Just awful. 2/10
8. The Gate (Tibor Takacs, 1987, DVD) Fun fun fun. Just what I needed to pick my mood up after that crap fest from Franco. 8.5/10
CT entry day 1
October 2
9. Tower Of London* (Roger Corman, 1962, DVD) Vincent Price is great as the madman who will stop at nothing to gain the crown of England. 7.5/10
10. Death Bed* (Danny Draven, 2002, DVD) I'd rather be on my deathbed than watch this again. 2/10
11. The Brain* (Ed Hunt, 1988, Stream) Cheesy take on letting TV take control of us. Enjoyable flick. 7/10
12. Slugs* (J.P. Simon, 1987, DVD) It's JP Simon what do you expect besides a gore filled cheesefest? 8/10
CT entry day 2
October 3
13. Critters 3* (Kristine Peterson, 1991, DVD) It's a Critters movie, what do you expect? 6/10
14. Critters 4* (Rupert Harvey, 1992, DVD) Well... I survived it. That's a plus. 2/10
15. Unhinged* (Don Gronquist, 1982, DVD) A slow, monotonous and underwhelming slasher. 4/10
16. Nightmares* (John Lamond, 1980, DVD) A sloppy mess that wants to be more than it's obvious slasher roots. 4/10
17. The Ward* (John Carpenter, 2010, Blu-Ray) Far too typical of a horror film for Carpenter. A disappointment. 4.5/10
18. Four Flies Of Grey Velvet (Dario Argento, 1971, Blu-Ray) Enjoyable giallo from Argento. The BD looks great. 7/10
19. Tales Of Terror* (Roger Corman, 1962, DVD) A decent adaptation of 3 Poe stories. 6/10
CT entry day 3
October 4
20. Tucker & Dale vs. Evil* (Eli Craig, 2010, Blu-Ray) The plot was a bit different than what I was expecting and it was pretty decent but the comedy was hit and miss for me. 6.5/10
21. Girls Nite Out* (Robert Deubel, 1982, DVD) Mediocre slasher that was only a few details away from being really entertaining 4.5/10
CT entry day 4
October 5
22. Halloween 4 (Dwight H. Little, 1988, Blu-Ray) I had to watch this on blu and it looks really good. A favorite of mine. 8/10
23. Dawn Of The Dead (George Romero, 1978, Blu-Ray) Simply a classic. 9.5/10
24. Dr. Black, Mr. Hyde* (William Crain, 1976, DVD) Decent but had it went a little heavier on either the blaxploitation or the horror it would have been better. 6/10
25. One Dark Night* (Tom McLoughlin, 1982, DVD) It takes too long to get started and barely turns into a horror movie in the last 20 minutes. 3/10
26. Blood Sisters* (Roberta Findlay, 1987, DVD) First time I've seen death by strangulation via garter... that was cool I guess. 2.5/10
27. The Man Who Could Cheat Death* (Terence Fisher, 1959, Blu-Ray) Great performance but a little uneventful. Still a pretty good early Hammer picture. 6.5/10
28. The Last Slumber Party* (Stephen Tyler, 1988, DVD) Fuck. This. Movie. 0/10
CT entry day 5
October 6
29. Touch Of Death* (Lucio Fulci, 1988, Stream) Tons of gore but it was a pretty terrible movie. 3/10
30. The Theatre Bizarre* (Various, 2011, DVD) A really cool anthology movie with a couple of great segments. Udo Kier steals the show in the wrap around story. 7/10
31. The Soul Of A Monster* (Will Jason, 1944, TV) Nothing great, a short time waster. 4/10
CT entry day 6
October 7
32. V/H/S* (Various, 2012, TV) The bad definitely outweighs the good here. 2 of the segments were good. 4.5/10
33. Return Of The Living Dead (Dan O'Bannon, 1985, Blu-Ray) In my top 10 favorite movies of all time. 10/10
34. Patrick* (Richard Franklin, 1978, DVD) I think the idea was better than the execution. Too slow with very little payoff. 4/10
CT entry day 7
October 8
35. Piranha 3DD* (John Gulager, 2012, Blu-Ray) This probably would have been more fun if Gulager wasn't involved. Disappointing but not all bad. 5/10
36. The Loved Ones* (Sean Byrne, 2009, DVD) This had enough material for a short film to work, not one at 90s minutes. 4.5/10
37. 100 Years Of Horror (Mutants, Demons, Freaks)* (Various, 1996, Stream) Neat little docs on various areas of horror but they barely start to scratch the surface and then they're over. 5/10
38. Night Of The Demon* (Jacques Tourneur, 1957, DVD) Really creepy story of black magic. 8/10
CT entry day 8
October 9
39. Colin* (Marc Price, 2008, DVD) I'll applaud the concept and the effort but the execution left much to be desired 4/10
40. The Sentinel* (Michael Winner, 1977, DVD) Good that falls just short of great. 7.5/10
41. The Burning Moon* (Olaf Ittenbach, 1992, DVD) The amount of splatter in this has to be seen to be believed. Great fun. 9/10
42. Mutants* (David Morlet, 2009, DVD) Typical movie of the last decade. Fast infected/zombies and a shaky cam. Nothing special or noteworthy. 4/10
43. Lemora: A Child's Tale Of The Supernatural* (Richard Blackburn, 1975, DVD) This deserves more attention, really cool flick. 8/10
CT entry day 9
October 10
44. Creature* (Fred M. Andrews, 2011, DVD) This movie plays out like a ripoff of movies that ripped off countless other movies. 3.5/10
45. Vamp* (Richard Wenk, 1986, DVD) Slower getting started than it should be but ends up being a decent horror comedy. 5.5/10
46. The Toolbox Murders* (Dennis Donnelly, 1977, Blu-Ray) A crazy man running wild killing people with various tools and having delusions of his dead daughter. It's good. 8/10
CT entry day 10
October 11
47. The Prophecy* (Gregory Widen, 1995, DVD) I was expecting a lot more out of this one 5/10
48. The Prophecy 2* (Greg Spence, 1998, DVD) On par with the first. 5/10
49. Ghoulies 3* (John Carl Buechler, 1991, DVD) Silly and mildly entertaining 5/10
50. Diabolique* (Henri-Georges Clouzot, 1955, Blu-Ray) So damn good! 8.5/10
51. The Black Cat* (Luigi Cozzi, 1989, Stream) I'm not exactly sure why, but I kind of liked it. 5.5/10
CT entry day 11
October 12
52. Halloween 3 (Tommy Lee Wallace, 1982, Blu-Ray) I'm ready for Halloween now. 8.5/10
53. A Bucket Of Blood* (Roger Corman, 1959, DVD) A fun horror satire on beatnick culture 7/10
54. Paranoiac* (Freddie Francis, 1963, DVD) Solid Psychological horror from Hammer. 7/10
55. The Evil Dead (Sam Raimi, 1985, Blu-Ray) Yea, its still awesome. 9.5/10
CT entry day 12
October 13
56. The House On Sorority Row* (Mark Rosman, 1983, DVD) Really top notch slasher 8/10
57. The Creeping Flesh* (Freddie Francis, 1973, TV) Cushing and Lee... is there a better team? Really good stuff that I now need to own. 8/10

Re: The 8th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31) ***The List Thread
Goal: 100 | Legend First Time Views * Watched With Wife * |
- Oct 1st - | |
![]() | 1.) Blow Out (1981) (Blu-Ray) ** My Thoughts: I just do this serial killer thing to support my side job. Great movie and a fascinating look at what is now a completely different craft; sound editing, and for sleazy horror movies at that! (4.5 out of 5) My Wife's Thoughts: Sad, I am extreme sad. John Travolta made same mistake twice. And I do not understand why they did not contact the police. Or that news guy, then she wont get killed. Uhhh I will say 4 star, if happy ending 4.5. (4 out of 5) |
![]() | 2.) Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street (1936) (DVD) * My Thoughts: Very interesting in comparison to the Depp version. The Sweeny Todd in this one has no redeeming qualities he is just killing people for the money. Also very abusive to the hired shop boys who he has probably been killing as well. But still, pretty good for a 30's movie, love triangles, murders & meat pies. (3.5 out of 5) |
![]() | 3.) Severed: Forest Of The Dead (2005) (DVD) * My Thoughts: This movie blew. What can I say that is good.... you do have zombies killing hippies and... ...it is in color. But that is about it. Bad acting, plot, dialog, effects, cinematography and even film stock (one of the worst looking 2000's movies I have seen). I suggest this movie only as a gift for people you hold in distain. (2 out of 5) |
![]() | 4.) May (2002) (Internet) * My Thoughts: Awesomely weird and demented, this is something I would never have even seen if it weren't for the checklist. This is one of those DVDs I have passed up countless times just because the cover didn't intrigue me but I am so glad I finally did see it. Also I totally know girls like this! And the song over the end credits gives a very Coraline vibe. (4 out of 5) |
![]() | 5.) Strange Behavior (1981) (DVD) * My Thoughts: Surprisingly good for what is in the end a Manchurian Candidate slasher. Also there is just something about 80's horror, it works for me. Add in a little sci-fi, some hidden family secrets, just a bit of goofiness & you have yourself an entertaining little flick. (3.5 out of 5) |
![]() | 6.) - 7.) Commentary For IT (1990) (DVD) * My Thoughts: The commentary for the first part is decent but a little ho hum, mostly director with little intersperses of the adult leads. A missed opportunity to get the actors that played the kids to come in and do a bit, especially Seth Green! But the second part where they let the male leads wax on about their experiences is great and fulfilling where the first half wasn't. Turns out everyone hates the spider. (3.5 out of 5) |
- Oct 2nd - | |
![]() | 8.) Commentary For Strange Behavior (1981) (DVD) * My Thoughts: Now this is a commentary! Some great stories about working in New Zealand, scoring and producing a relatively low budget movie. I hadn't even noticed that is is almost the same plot as Disturbing Behavior until one of the directors backhanded comments. Also there are some great stories about the main actor trying to bang everything on the set, my favorite kind of behind the scenes stories. (4 out of 5) |
![]() | 9.) The Gingerdead Man (2005) (DVD) * My Thoughts: Think Gary Busey as Chucky in cookie form with a budget less than the cost of an average car. About as bad as you would expect, similar to Severed in that it is mildly entertaining from time to time but not worth a revisit or reccomending to anyone. But, at least it's not as bad as Evil Bong 3, yikes! (2 out of 5) |
![]() | 10.) Tales Of Terror (1962) (DVD) * My Thoughts: A nice little Poe anthology each starring Vincent Price. The first episode is weak but Price is awesome as the fruity wine snob in the second episode. Part 3 is the best of the bunch and something I could see being made it's own film, really made me want to watch some Phibes. (4 out of 5) |
![]() | 11.) Mad Monster Party (1962) (Blu-Ray) ** My Thoughts: I wish I had seen this movie 20 years ago (I almost wrote 10 and then had to re-evaluate my answer, and my life), I think a kid me would have really enjoyed this. I still found it an interesting and unique watch and will defiantly be showing it to my kids when that time comes. (3 out of 5) My Wife's Thoughts: It's ok I do not care about the cartoon and I do not think that is a horror movie. So I am little disappointed. (3 out of 5) |
- Oct 3rd - | |
![]() | 12.) The Dentist (1996) (VHS) My Thoughts: I hate the way this movie makes me feel. That squirmy, everything can go back to normal if he can just cover up this one thing. I hate it. The movie it's self is better than a direct to video release deserves to be and hey Mark Ruffalo! But I just can't stand watching it. (3.5 out of 5) |
- Oct 4th - | |
![]() | 13.) Screams Of A Winter Night (1979) (Internet) * My Thoughts: Not bad, defiantly feels like a shoe string budget movie but 70's low budget just doesn't quite look as cheap as new cheap movies. But I liked it, I always like anthologies and it had a great little Cabin In The Woods vibe. Never understood the I'm too scared lets go home thing though, just a horrible movie conceit. (3 out of 5) |
![]() | 14.) Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) (DVD) My Thoughts: A classic from my childhood. I have always liked this movie, I can even remember an instance in about maybe the 3rd grade where I was singing Sweet Transvestite around the house and my mom told me not to sing that at school. There is not nearly enough horror/scifi themed musicals. (5 out of 5) |
![]() | 15.) Scre4m (2011) (Blu-Ray) ** My Thoughts: How meta can you get indeed. Really good, way better than 2 and 3. And perhaps one of the best modern slashers I have seen. I loved how they evolved this series, I think it really fit with the Japanese title of this movie Scream: The Next Generation (although a name like that in the US would probably have sealed box office failure). On a side note: 00's teens could totally take these weak 10's teens. (4 out of 5) My Wife's Thoughts: Very violent, could not stand somehow and many famous people. I did not know thats Julia Roberts nephew... nephew female? Niece ne? You don't have to write those. So no more Scream 5 ne? Seems completed. And my guess is not. The first 3 not kill that fast, now seems stab stab stab stab stab. (4 out of 5) |
- Oct 5th - | |
![]() | 16.) Commentary For Scre4m (2011) (Blu-Ray) * My Thoughts: After listening to the commentary for Strange Behavior and then this one I have come to the conclusion that film crews are to professional now a days. The juiciest bit I gleaned from this one was the guy doing the scream voice doing a little dirty talk to Hayden Panettiere. Craven is as always a consummate professional and there is a bit of Neve Campbell. Decent if average track. (3 out of 5) |
![]() | 17.) Revolt Of The Zombies (1936) (DVD) * My Thoughts: I had high hopes for this this movie when the first scene involved voodoo zombies taking a trench (yes as in trench warfare) and not flenching while receiving a spray of gunfire. And then when a research team ventured into asia in search of the secret to zombie soldiers, I thought maybe. But everything just rang a little flat and boring to me. Interesting to look at but not to watch. (2.5 out of 5) |
![]() | 18.) Vampire Hookers (1978) (DVD) * My Thoughts: Admittedly a shitty movie but it was fun. 2 sailors (one who looks a lot like Mitt Romney) looking for a good time in the Philippines run afoul of a group of, yes you guessed it, vampire hookers. Also John Carradine and a healthy infusion for the boob stats. (3.5 out of 5) |
![]() | 19.) Encounter With The Unknown (1973) (DVD) * My Thoughts: A boring anthology that had Rod Sterling for apparently a day, or at least a few hours as the narrator tends to switch back and forth. Similar in feel to Screams Of A Winters Night but not quite as good, the stories are a bit tame and there is a lot of retread, the whole movie is basically recapped at the end. A little cutting and one more short story would have gone a long way to helping this turkey. At least bumping it up to a 3. (2 out of 5) |
![]() | 20.) Video Violence (1987) (DVD) ** My Thoughts: Feels kind of like a non-studio Troma movie. Shot on tape, bad acting, 1 monotonous synth song, poor editing, decent but obvious effects but I have to say I kind of enjoyed this. The plot was solid even though nothing else was. Kind of a poor mans Wicker Man feel to the whole thing. I am kind of excited to see if they perfected their craft in the making of the sequel. (3 out of 5) My Wife's Thoughts: Ridiculously stupid gross and could not expected the ending just too gross less story. I want to watch suspense not gross. Vomitando. (When asked if she wanted to see part 2 or just let me watch it by myself she opted to see it). (3 out of 5) |
- Oct 6th - | |
![]() | 21.) Night Of The Living Dead (1990) (Blu-Ray) My Thoughts: There is an internet uproar about the color scheme of this BR. And I have to say watching it last night I wouldn't have minded it being lighter but it was still amazing looking. And I think this darker version might even add a bit to the ambiance. On the movie, it doesn't hold a candle to the original but it is still a solid zombie flick and it got me excited for the upcoming season of The Walking Dead. (3.5 out of 5) |
![]() | 22.) The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971) (Internet)* My Thoughts: So this was one of those weird circumstances where I actually bought and watched the sequel before seeing the original. So this movie didn't blow me away as much as it could have but it was still really good. I hope that at some point I have the monies to finance such an elaborate revenge. One of Price's best characters. (4 out of 5) |
![]() | 23.) Dr. Phibes Rises Again (1972) (DVD) My Thoughts: More Phiby goodness. I love swapping London for Egypt and that we get to bring our bumbling detective along. Like the first we have some inventive kills. It does retread a bit at times but it's still a treat. It's too bad that a Phibes trilogy couldn't be made. The film is certainty set up for it and easily good enough to warrant one. (4 out of 5) |
![]() | 24.) Scanners II: The New Order (1991) (VHS) My Thoughts: This movie is better than it has any right to be as a cash grab direct to video sequel. It was good enough that for years after that I would rent any iteration of direct to video releases, most with disappointing results as I recall. While there is no one to Ironside levels in this cast it has a solid story with flavors of Bronson & Akira. Also there has something about secret government projects I have always loved, especially when they inevitably have to go rouge. (4 out of 5) |
![]() | 25.) Chopping Mall (1986) (DVD)* My Thoughts: A cinematic classic. A deep look at consumerism and it's effect on Gen Xers. But in all seriousness we have Barbara Crampton, Dick Miller, killer robots, set in a mall, with plenty of boobs and kills, it's a cheesy delight. (4 out of 5) My Thoughts: Choto very unrealistic today. Look like fat people electronic car. I think shouldn't fight ne? Just hide is better. Story ga nothing only 3 star. (3 out of 5) |
![]() | 26.) Commentary For Night Of The Living (1990) (Blu-Ray)* My Thoughts: A Tom Savini solo commentary carried over, I am told, from the DVD. It is a little dry but highly informative. Makes me wonder if I should give Children Of The Living Dead another chance. (3 out of 5) |
- Oct 7th - | |
![]() | 27.) Netherworld (1992) (DVD)* My Thoughts: After watching something like Gingerdead Man and then this you have got to ask yourself wtf happened to Full Moon? This is by no means a great movie but at least it feels like a movie. Quality sets/actors/effects, seriously what happened? On a side note, in movies where brothels are prominent set pieces I expect much much more nudity. (3 out of 5) |
![]() | 28.) Night Fright (1967) (Internet)* My Thoughts: A lame bigfoot-esk alien crashes just outside of town and proceeds to harass it's stereotypical 50's townsfolk. Waste of time. Sometimes I hate the checklist, but hey it is better than Severed and The Gingerdead Man. (2.5 out of 5) |
![]() | 29.) Scream Queen Hot Tub Party (1991) (DVD)* My Thoughts: A nice little TnA matinee. For those times when you really just want to see 30-35 minuets of non-stop nudity. It was really enjoyable, don't expect a plot or anything but If you enjoy one of the 5 mainliners they will be naked, multiple times, throughout the course of the "movie". And there is also plenty of scenes from other movies, most of which I have surprisingly not seen! (4 out of 5) |
![]() | 30.) Animation Domination Halloween Specials (2012) (TV)* My Thoughts: One of my favorite halloween traditions, although it did fall a bit early this year. The Simpsons and Bob's Burgers were the winners this year, Cleveland show had a decent showing and despite promotional materials Family Guy and American Dad ran non-seasonal episodes. Still a great time though. (4 out of 5) |
![]() | 31.) The House Of The Devil (2009) (Blu-Ray)** My Thoughts: I was lamenting last challenge that I am a little sad every time I see a great 80's horror movies that I have never seen before because that is one less that I will discover in the future. But little did I know that they are still making great 80's horror movies! This was a treat, we don't really get these effective slow burn horror movies anymore. Easily in the running for best FTV of the challenge. (4.5 out of 5) My Wife's Thoughts: Thats pretty good beginning, I like it. Middle is little boring but it is great movie. I like that kind of suspense, I like it good movie. (4 out of 5) |
- Oct 8th - | |
![]() | 32.) Commentary For The House Of The Devil (2009) (Blu-Ray)* My Thoughts: Decent track, nothing too amazing but I am liking this TI West guy. This is the first film of his I have seen but I will defiantly be more inclines to see his work in the future. (3.5 out of 5) |
![]() | 33.) Friday The 13th Part VI: Jason Lives (1986) (DVD) My Thoughts: Ah, the beginning of Jason's supernatural super-zombie phase. Parts 6-8 are the ones they always played on tv when I was a kid so they hold a special place in my psyche. There is a lot more humor in this one than in other entries and a lot less boobs (as in none). One of Jason's more average outings but I did like how they decided to go super strong on re-animated Voorhees. (3 out of 5) |
![]() | 34.) Gingerdead Man 2: The Passion Of The Crust (2008) (DVD)* My Thoughts: Wow, my expectations were pretty low after the first one but this was surprisingly decent. Kind of a Terror Firmer rip-off (never thought I would ever say that) as the Gingerdead Man kills his way across a low-budget horror set (fake Full Moon). I think this might be the only Full Moon movie made post 1998 that I have actually liked. Also Michele Bauer (albeit an older more clothed version). (3.5 out of 5) |
![]() | 35.) Friday The 13th Part VII: The New Blood (1988) (DVD)* My Thoughts: Hey I met that girl during the 2010 OHMC! I liked this one, too be sure it is by the numbers but adding the telekinetic girl really spiced it up a bit. Would have been nice to have her come back later in the series as maybe Jason's nemesis. And since it seems to be all the rage in the main thread I like this one better than Goes To Hell, FvJ, Part V, Part VI & the reboot. Also first Kane Hodder Jason. (3.5 out of 5) My Wife's Thoughts: That is good but kinda guess what happen (Of course you can it's a Friday The 13th Movie). I know again killing too much kind of gross. Hope they have little more detail about that main character maybe. (3.5 out of 5) |
- Oct 9th - | |
![]() | 36.) Deadgirl (2008) (Blu-Ray)* My Thoughts: Two highschool boys find a hot chained up zombie and then they and their friends proceed to fuck it with wild abandon. This movie was awesome, I mean who hasn't at least thought about it... It's sick, funny, original and comes with one of my highest levels of recommendation (to the right audience). I would love to see a short story prequel as a supplemental on the upcoming sequel, the whole set up is just so intriguing. (5 out of 5) |

Re: The 8th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31) ***The List Thread
Goal: 100 | Legend First Time Views * Watched With Wife * |
![]() | 37.) Commentary For Deadgirl (2008) (Blu-Ray) * My Thoughts: Cast and crew commentaries always have better dynamics. This one took a little while to get warmed up but defiantly a satisfied in the end. I don't think I have ever heard so much talk about a merkin, ever. A lot of good low budget movie making stories. And hearing what made and didn't make the cut made me want to see a version with even more of the gore that didn't make it to the director's cut. (4 out of 5) |
![]() | 38.) Juan Of The Dead (2011) (DVD) * My Thoughts: I generally prefer serious horror with a little comedy as opposed to comedic horror with a few serious moments. But this played quite well for me, I easily prefer this to Shaun Of The Dead. It was an interesting cultural experience too as I don't think I have seen any movies set in Cuba also the underlying anti-American sentiment was quite fascinating as well. (4 out of 5) |
- Oct 10th - | |
![]() | 39.) 2nd Commentary For Deadgirl (2008) (Blu-Ray)* My Thoughts: In this commentary Deadgirl speaks, a lot. I am torn a little on this one because she does get a bit annoying from tome to time but she is telling the stories your really want to hear. Like getting turned on during rape scenes and extensive merkin discussion. Wish she had a different moderator though. (3.5 out of 5) |
![]() | 40.) Creature From The Haunted Sea (1961) (Internet)* My Thoughts: So I kind of hated this movie for the first 30 minutes or so, I was thinking to myself; damn you Screwadu. If only the day's theme was snack food monsters and we could have watched The Stuff and all had a god laugh about how crazy Dick Laurent is. But it sort of grew on me there in the last half of the film, when I got into the mindset that it was just one big ridiculous mess. Also somewhat interesting view of Cuba after seeing Juan Of The Dead. (3 out of 5) |
![]() | 41.) The Fourth Kind (2009) (DVD)* My Thoughts: I had heard all the bad reviews but decided to give this one a chance since I love Mila and I was in the mood from some Paranormal Activity scares. But sometimes the masses are right. Didn't care for the real/recreation dynamic. The "real" people didn't feel real but just like bad actors. There were 1 or 2 creepy moments but I didn't get that scared high I was looking for. (2.5 out of 5) |
![]() | 42.) Gamera 3: Revenge of Iris (1999) (Blu-Ray)** My Thoughts: A decent sequel but I didn't care for this one as much as the first 2 Gamera outings. The nemesis creature looks too much like a Pokemon this time. But there is a pretty great part towards the end where Gamera blasts off his own hand to get away. In the end this movie delivered on what it promised. Thinking about it it took me 3 separate challenges to watch this trilogy. (3.5 out of 5) My Wife's Thoughts: It's good... it's ok... thats impossible. i don't understand why you categorize the horror challenge but I enjoyed. Nara and Kyoto. Creepy translation, I can do better than that. Steven Seagal's daughter always have that movie... Gamera or Godzilla ... not Godzilla... Gamera seed(?)... I don't think Seagal's daughter is that good, parents are famous thats why. (3 out of 5) |
![]() | 43.) Stake Land (2010) (Blu-Ray)* My Thoughts: This movie was amazing. I love post apocalyptic future flicks. Well done, excellent scope and nice twist on vampires. I might never have even seen this if I hadn't made some random synaptic connection that someone here in the forum liked it. I even thought it was called Skate Land until right before watching it. I had this idea in my head that it was a zombie flick with people held up in a roller-ring or something. I am so glad I was wrong as it turned out to be an absolute pleasure. My only quibble with this movie would be that the adult lead looks so much like Mickey Rourke that you might think they hired a look-a-like, it is oddly distracting. (4.5 out of 5) |
- Oct 11th - | |
![]() | 44.) Dead Of Night (1945) (Internet)* My Thoughts: I remember coming across the dummy part of this anthology on tv once. But had never otherwise seen or was even aware of this picture. I do have to say good choice Mister Peepers, good solid older horror flick. (3.5 out of 5) |
![]() | 45.) The Dead (2010) (Blu-Ray)* My Thoughts: This movie was built up a bit too much. An interesting breakout story, I really like the setting and that feeling of nowhere being safe due to infrastructure. But I did not care for the lead, he just came off non believable and funny looking, very similar to what would happen if I starred in the movie. It really detracted from the final product which with the right actor might have been a 4/5 picture. (3 out of 5) |
- Oct 12th - | |
![]() | 46.) Bloody Moon (1981) (Internet)* My Thoughts: If you are in the mood for a cheesy Euro-slasher, this one more than fits the bill. Bad dubbing, over the top violence, a plot that at times makes no sense; it was awesome. A shout-out goes to clckworang who recommended this treasure. (4 out of 5) |
![]() | 47.) Commentary For Chopping Mall (1986) (DVD) My Thoughts: Great commentary I haven't listened to this one since this DVD first came out. And hey Angus Scrim is oh so very briefly in this movie, something you would probably never know without the benefit of this commentary. Some great anecdotes about the actors and the production, I also wonder what happened to Pat. If ever they do a 30th, 40th anniversary edition of this feature they should track her down for an interview. (4 out of 5) |
![]() | 48.) Commentary For I Spit On Your Grave (1978) (DVD)* My Thoughts: Easily the best commentary I have ever heard. (5 out of 5) |
![]() | 49.) Class Of 1999 (1990) (DVD)* My Thoughts: This movie turned up the dial on the cheese and ripped off the knob. To get more eighties-tastic you would need a Corey. You know I almost imported the Korean release of this movie, it didn't have a proper region 1 release until 2008. Anyway I.. love.. this.. movie, late 80's/early 90's always did a great crime filled/corrupt government future (the zombie apocalypse of the day). This is easily my favorite Terminator rip-off. And there is a part of me that desperately wants to give this a 5/5 but I just couldn't in good conscience do such a thing. Class of 1984 might have been a better movie but I had a much better time watching Class of 1999. (4 out of 5) |
![]() | 50.) The Brain That Wouldn't Die (1962) (DVD)* My Thoughts: Well color me surprised, I kind of thought this would be another campy mess but it was decent. Surprising amount of gore for an older movie and a nice twisted plot. I think I would enjoy enjoy seeing this one again in Rifftrax form. A classic for sure, but man that lady is a bitch. If the tables were turned and my wife was trying to save my life I would tell her to kill as many people as she needed, just do it. Body shopping was also enjoyable. (3 out of 5) |
- Oct 13th - | |
![]() | 51.) I Was A Teenage Zombie (1987) (VHS) My Thoughts: Teens fight back after getting sold bad marijuana, accidentally kill dealer, throw his body in the river which happen to have been recently irradiated. Thus starts a lucid zombie movie, this is the first strike against this movie, zombies should be mindless eating machines. The highschool zombie premiss was done much better than this in the 90's with My Boyfirend's Back (it has be awhile so forgive me if that sucks too). This movie has 1 or 2 great effects shots but the bad actors playing stupid comedy really doesn't work for me. Skip it and see Class Of Nuke 'Em High instead. (2.5 out of 5) |
![]() | 52.) The Ghost And Mr. Chicken (1966) (DVD)* My Thoughts: Now here is a comedy, Knotts does his great coward out of their element, this time in a haunted house. It plays almost like an episode of Scooby Doo except without the gang. And it was just the lighthearted pallet cleanser I needed. Also I have to use the Knotts comeback sometime: "Why don't you run up an alley and holler 'Fish'! (4 out of 5) |
![]() | 53.) The Faculty (1998) (DVD)* My Thoughts: This movie hasn't aged very well. Or perhaps I just saw it too many times in my formative years. An interesting take on the Body Snatchers trope. But I think it would have played better a little darker, with out the whole kill the head vampire conceit. Still, not a bad movie by any stretch. (3.5 out of 5) My Thoughts: Eto many famous people. De I guess do they famous before that or... seems lots of money to take that movie. Is that big hit desu ka? Choto gross big squid. I lost appetite, don't want to eat squid anymore demo movie. (3.5 out of 5) |
- Oct 14th - | |
![]() | 54.) - 54.5) The Walking Dead S02E11-13 (2012) (TV) My Thoughts: So the prisoner/Shane situations really put a dampener on the end of season 2 but man did the finale make up for it and in a big way. I grew to hate the farm during season 2 but when it was being over run I wanted was for them to hold it. This was the zombie apocalypse I signed up for. (4 out of 5) |
![]() | 55.) The Walking Dead S03E01 (2012) (TV)* My Thoughts: Excellent. Fighting the riot gear zombies was amazing, the group has become an amazing scavenging unit, Carl coming into his own. This whole episode was fan service all the way. We are back to another similar moral question though. To kill the prisoners, banish them or let them join. Personally I would banish and call it charity. Also it has never really been answered, as in Day of the Dead he died too soon, but will a cut off limb prevent the change from occurring. My mind says yes but it could easily have been too late. And we haven't had a living to zombie slow turn, it would be an interesting area to explore. I can't believe I have to wait another 7 days!!! (5 out of 5) |
![]() | 56.) C.H.U.D. II: Bud The Chud (1989) (DVD) My Thoughts: I don't think I know anybody that was initially pleased with Chud 2. I mean how can you have a sequel and not bring back the title character? Gone are the awesome creatures that plagued a grimy New York and in are these lame semi-lucid zombies. Also the movie is a comedy this time but unfortunately not a funny one. The movie by itself is a somewhat passable as a lame 80's horror com but as a sequel to the surprisingly good original, it is a disgrace. (2.5 out of 5) |
![]() | 57.) The Toolbox Murders (1978) (DVD)** My Thoughts: Great serial killer movie. Dripping with atmosphere some fantastic slow kills. And an ending that you would in not expect. I really enjoyed this movie and am kind of surprised I have never seen it before. I wonder if the remake is any good... (4 out of 5) My Thoughts: It is pretty good but seems many people did not lock the door so its very easy to get inside the house. Thats I cannot believe it. And I know who is the murderer in the middle of the movie. (3.5 out of 5) |
- Oct 15th - | |
![]() | 58.) - 59.) Frankenstein: The True Story (1973) (DVD)* My Thoughts: Well not so much the more literal adaptation I was expecting. This was still quite interesting remaining of Frankenstein. The monster in this one was not quite as monstrous as he should have been but this movie really succeeded in the dirty but fascinating 1800's medicine and has one of my favorite creation scenes. I do wish they would make a version where that blind man's daughter and son-in-law weren't such dicks. Also the evil scientist foil for Frankenstein adds an interesting level. It was a lot slower than any other adaptation but recommendable for fans of the genre. (3.5 out of 5) |
![]() | 60.) Frankenhooker (1990) (Blu-Ray)* My Thoughts: The perennial classic as recommended by thespian Bill Murray. I bought the R-Rated DVD release of this back in the day and really wasn't digging on it too much. I am not sure if it was the 3 extra minutes or I was just in the right mood but I had a great time this time. Super crack, exploding hookers, boobs, a little head with dinner, killer lawn mowers and that jerky bell hop from Street Trash! If you like this kind of movie then there is no reason for this one not to be in your collection. (4 out of 5) My Wife's Thoughts: That beginning I didn't think it's that creepy... it's just very creepy. Sooo many boobies, it was funny ending. Must see it. Only 2 star. (You said 'Must see"?) Because strange... (But you liked it.) Thats a guys movie. (2 out of 5) |

![]() | 61.) Chillerama (2011) (Blu-Ray)* My Thoughts: I really liked the first episode and the movie geek wrap around. Unfortunately episodes 2-4 sucked, bad. It's too bad too as this could have been right up my alley if it had kept the quality of Wadzilla throughout. (2.5 out of 5) |
![]() | 62.) Final Destination 5 3-D (2011) (Blu-Ray)** My Thoughts: I missed FD 3&4 but that didn't seem to make much of a difference. Almost a remake of the first this one. I liked it in a horror sequel way, there is something oddly fulfilling about watching a movie and playing the "how is this person going to die" game. Also I love my 3D tv, one of the best purchases I have ever made. Also the singer was enjoyable. (3.5 out of 5) My Wife's Thoughts:Pretty good but some death case is extremely unrealistic. But 3d it looks extremely gross. So far pretty good. I'm wandering if they going to have 6 or not. 3.5 because of the 3d. (3.5 out of 5) |
![]() | 63.) Gingerdead Man 3: Saturday Night Cleaver (2011) (DVD)* My Thoughts: My hopes were up a bit after the surprisingly decent GDM 2 but yeah this one blew. I didn't like any of the actors, most of the jokes and it was just plain stupid most of the time. Maybe if I was really really drunk. (2 out of 5) |
- Oct 17th - | |
![]() | 64.) Exorcist II: The Heretic (1977) (VHS) My Thoughts: Well you got to give them credit for not sticking to the formula. An interesting continuation of the first following Linda Blairs character as she becomes a young woman, big missed opportunity her to see a lot more of a then 18 Linda Blair. This movie really tries to be different, a lot of weird hypno/african stuff. And while this is defiantly an interest holder it doesn't really do anything to propel the movie above par. (3 out of 5) |
![]() | 65.) Spasms (1983) (VHS) My Thoughts: It's like Anaconda, done in the 80's and someone has a weird psychic connection to the snake. There was a lot of boring here but a good amount of cheese as well, a long with a lot of blue snake vision cam. The 2 best parts of the are actually on the cover, the guy bubbling up from snake poison and the chick in the shower. (3 out of 5) |
![]() | 66.) God Told Me To (1976) (DVD) My Thoughts: Hey I made it throughout the whole movie this time without falling asleep! This was actually a fascinating story the execution left a little something to be desired. A little X-Files, a little cult action, this movie could have been a contender. But it just comes off too slow and as mentioned previously sleep inducing. (3 out of 5) |
![]() | 67.) Tenebre (1982) (VHS)* My Thoughts: I love Goblin scores. An excellent Argento giallo, it has everything you want from a Euro slasher, a demented maniac, a twisting plot, stalking & of course slow violent murders. The plot does get a little off the rails towards the end but it is a very satisfying movie. More movies should do all Goblin scores. (4 out of 5) My Wife's Thoughts: It is extremely creepy and my guess of the murderer was wrong. And he chop everyone pretty gross but police never get it or he never caught. Just choto ridiculous someone should know what is going on and sometimes way too obvious. (4 out of 5) |
- Oct 18th - | |
![]() | 68.) The Demon (1981) (DVD) My Thoughts: And here is an example of a subpar giallo/slasher. It is like night and day comparing this with Tenebre, almost like watching a freshman effort. There were plenty of murders, boobs and a psychic tie-in that came to a head in a very amusing way but it just didn't quite hit the spot. At least it was a Theme Night hit. (2.5 out of 5) |
- Oct 19th - | |
![]() | 69.) Friday The 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan (1989) (DVD) My Thoughts: I know everyone hates this one but it was just too intrical a part of my childhood not to look on with fondness. This movie and C.H.U.D. permanently set in my mind what New York was like. 'Help there is a maniac trying to kill us'... 'Welcome to New York'. 'We got to get out of here, the swears fill up with toxic waste every night at midnight'. Ah the grimy crime ridden forbidden fruit. Also he have Jason out of his element which is almost always fun. True you can almost see the lack of budget but I just really enjoy this one. (3.5 out of 5) |
![]() | 69.5) American Horror Story S02E01 (2012) (Internet)* My Thoughts: I was a big fan of season one, even though it got a little muddled in the final act, so I was pretty excited for this one. And it did not disappoint. There is something super creepy about abandoned mental institutions (I have always wanted to visit one) and it made an excellent stage which what looks to be another great season. Really looking forward to next week. Oh and I also like that they branched off a bit into sci-fi and not just straight horror. (4.5 out of 5) |
![]() | 70.5) Commentary For Friday The 13th Part VIII (1989) (DVD) My Thoughts: On a side note I am totally digging this song from the opening and closing of this movie; The Darkest Side Of The Night. Anyway this commentary is a little flat, it is too bad we couldn't get a cast member to sit in with the director. He fills the time well enough talking about the production and behind the scenes goings on but the guy is just a bit too bland compared to what I prefer in a commentary track. (3 out of 5) |
![]() | 71.5) Diary Of The Dead (2007) (DVD) My Thoughts: Why Geroge, why? This movie was awful, I hated ever character and wanted all of them to die. A found footage zombie apocalypse movie is just a bad idea. Then the whole 'oh the media is trying to cover it up', seriously? The movie gets half a point for having decent special effects but otherwise is currently my front runner for worst of challenge. The sad part is I don't think I will be able to force myself to get rid of it since it has Romero's name on it, has ...of the dead in the title and has a slip cover. (1.5 out of 5) |

![]() | 72.5) Don't Look Now (1973) (DVD) ** My Thoughts: I kept waiting for something to happen but nothing ever really did (until the last 3 minutes). It got to the point where I was really just watching the scenery, which being in Venice was quite nice. It wasn't bad, there just wasn't enough here for me to consider this a complete narrative. (2.5 out of 5) My Wife's Thoughts: It is very interesting beginning and I really like it and my guess was wrong. I did not expected that ending but I thought he was going to die that is correct. Very interesting but seems like it did not connect some story in the middle. I enjoy the scenic. (3.5 out of 5) |
- Oct 20th - | |
![]() | 73.5) Jason Goes To Hell: The Final Friday (1993) (VHS) My Thoughts:I like to think of this one as a Friday The 13th one off; what if Jason was a body hopping entity a la The Hidden? I remember disliking it originally because Jason was only really in it a little bit and black mask, why? But it has grown on me over time. Also casting Ryan from Friday The 13th The Series was an inspired choice, too bad they couldn't work in cameos from Jack and Micki. A fun if incongruous entry. (3.5 out of 5) |
![]() | 74.5) The Legend Of The 7 Golden Vampires (1974) (Internet) My Thoughts: This one was weird, part Chinese Kung-Fu Vampire and part Hammer film. Although Cushing's Van Helsing hangs back quite a bit in this one and just lets the asians fight it out. Add to that plenty of hot naked asian chicks and you have yourself a pretty good, if somewhat peculiar, time. (3.5 out of 5) |
![]() | 75.5) Seedpeople (1992) (DVD)* My Thoughts: Well this movie didn't live up to the cover art. Felt a lot like Skeeter; big fake monsters with people grabbing them and pretending they can't get away. Add on top of that a Body Snatchers rippoff and you have a movie that feels like 2 shoved together. I did have a certain cheesy appeal and is above average for a Full Moon outing. (3 out of 5) |
- Oct 21st - | |
![]() | 76.) The Walking Dead S03E02 (2012) (TV) My Thoughts: Nice to see that rick actually grew a pair since last season. More zombie awesomeness, why don't they just get some thick leather or denim zombie fighting suits to ward off stray bites? Who was watching from the woods? And I could see the surviving prisoners as part of the group, it does beg the question how that one guy kept his facial hair so well maintained. I hope this show never ends, or at least comes to a satisfying one. (4.5 out of 5) |
![]() | 77.) Creepozoids (1987) (DVD)** My Thoughts: Sup par Alien knock off, but it features Linnea Quigley's breasts! (3 out of 5) My Wife's Thoughts: Full Moon desu yo? I know which company made the movie. Aweful creature and creepy setting and no story. Expected ending. (You expected a monster baby to pop out of the dead creature?) Not that part but only one person left, thats totally expected, everyone died, just contaminated or something always happens. Their monster looks so so so fake they should spend more money to make better monster. Belial mo. Belial Full Moon? (2 out of 5) |
- Oct 22nd | |
![]() | 78.) The Pit And The Pendulum (1961) (DVD) My Thoughts: Ah, I had forgot I had seen this one before. Vincent Price in Poe properties is always enthralling and is an experience that you won't get with any contemporary properties. Kind of like the natural evolution of Universal horror without the monsters. (3.5 out of 5) |
![]() | 79.) [REC] (2007) (Internet)* My Thoughts: I was just lamenting a few entries ago that the concept of a found footage zombie movie is just bad. And apparently I was wrong, Diary Of The Dead just really really sucked. This movie was great, it had the best little girl zombie and fuck that last one... yikes! This is my second Spanish zombie movie of the challenge and it has made me excited for some more recent foreign zombie flicks. (4 out of 5) |
- Oct 23rd | |
![]() | 80.) Maniac Cop (1988) (Blu-Ray)* My Thoughts: Another one of those odd times where I saw the sequel before the original. I had this idea in my head as a kid that Maniac cop was some twisted, sick, banned, grizzly masterpiece. It's not but it is still quite entertaining. And that guy, I hate his face but I just can't stop looking at it. Also Bruce Campbell for the win! (3.5 out of 5) |
![]() | 81.) A Tale Of Two Sisters (2003) (DVD)* My Thoughts: Didn't play quite as well on the repeat viewing but still a great movie. Wonderfully weird and interesting atmosphere, a haunting score and a couple of hot Korean chicks. (4 out of 5) My Wife's Thoughts: Oh it is a little confusing. But it is Korean so I kind of expected those happen. It is really good movie but korean movie always not clear I can give 4 star. (4 out of 5) |
- Oct 24th | |
![]() | 82.) The Oblong Box (1969) (DVD)* My Thoughts: Another Vincent Price does Poe movie, he is a little older and a little fatter this time around but still another entertaining outing. Also I never knew how easy it was to get laid with a red velvet mask on your face. Didn't work for me quite as well as the other two VP Poe movies I watched earlier in the challenge, but still solid. There is also a grave pilfering Dr. Lee. (3 out of 5) |
![]() | 83.) Night Of The Demon (1957) (Internet)* My Thoughts: A surprisingly good older cult movie. An american scientist flies to Europe to debunk a religious cult and find it was a little more real than he initially thought. An interesting hook but it might have played a bit more interesting if the supernatural hadn't been as real in this one, in fact I keep waiting for a Holmes reveal that never matriculated. Otherwise it was a really good movie with some great settings. One of them being, you guessed it, Stone Hinge (it must be a nightmare to get clearances to film there as I can't remember many movies at all set there). Seems like run across 1 or 2 great cult movies a year, I am going to see if I can up that. (4 out of 5) |
- Oct 25th | |
![]() | 84.) The Beyond (1981) (DVD) My Thoughts: I bought this one in the early days of dvd in its cut R version as The Seven Doors of Death. So later when I bought this pack I was kind of disappointed as I thought I had just accidentally re-bought the same title. Since then it has grown on me quite a bit, I almost even bought the recent soundtrack LP for my wall. Sure some of it is non-senseical, and some of the effects are downright awful but it is a unique, creepy, enthralling bit of celluloid. (4 out of 5) |
![]() | 85.) Cheerleader Camp (1988) (DVD)* My Thoughts: Well, you get about what you expect. Boobs, murder and some over the top 80's hookyness. Fun if you are in the first mood. (3 out of 5) My Thoughts: I did not expected the murder I thought the creepy guy or Allison. Story is very very very strange and stupid little bit. But I did not expect the murder so that is pretty good, I can give them 3.5 star. (3.5 out of 5) |
- Oct 26th | |
![]() | 86.) The Innkeepers (2011) (Blu-Ray)** My Thoughts: Another great slow burn from TI West. And is one actually gave me a few scares! I think I am in love with this director. I must consume all of his work, the characters, the plots, the setting, the pace... Next on the 'to buy' slate V/H/S. (4.5 out of 5) My Wife's Thoughts: I expect very high but not that good. And does not show whats that problem they just try to find the own (murry?) and could not really find out exactly then that girl died. I do not like it that ending. I can give only 3 star. (Murry?) the curse what happen in the past, she just could not find problem, then some scary thing happen thats it. I expect some secret or find it...some detail from the past... (3 out of 5) |
![]() | 87.) Disturbing Behavior (1998) (VHS) My Thoughts: Ah, '98 again, one of the films of my childhood. I even saw this one in the theater. It's not especially good or bad, and doesn't really play as well to people past high school. But it is a solid remake/knock off of Strange Behavior. I prefer the latter but this one does star a super hot, gothy, young, Katie Holmes. (3 out of 5) |
![]() | 88.) Dead Pit (1989) (DVD)* My Thoughts: This is one of those movies I have always wanted to see, every time I would go to the video store I would touch that textured VHS box. It would seem though that my stores tape broke and they just never took the front case of the shelf, just to tease me I guess. So recently when this was released on DVD I jumped at the opportunity to buy it. One question on the DVD though, why include the textured slip with the 1 disc version and not for people who ponied up for the 2 disc version?!?!? All of that aside it was some decent fun B horror fair, but it just couldn't hold up to what I had built up in my head. Perhaps when I watch it again in a few years with tempered expectations... (3 out of 5) |
- Oct 27th | |
![]() | 89.) Spookies (1986) (Internet)* My Thoughts: This movie was a barrel of cheese, from the acting to the effect to the story. And by all accounts it is a film I should love but it just didn't wow me. Could be that I am finally hitting the wall as this really is my kind of film. Should it ever make BR or DVD I will certainly give it another shake. (3.5 out of 5) |
![]() | 90.) American Horror Story S02E02 (2012) (Internet) (Wild Card #1)* My Thoughts: Not a bad take on an exorcism episode. Although that part wasn't quite as strong as the series main plot wrap around. Still a great show and something I look forward to watching every week. (Wild card for length). (4 out of 5) |
![]() | 91.) Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy (2010) (DVD) My Thoughts: The gold standard for retrospective documentaries. I hope the Critters and the Hellraiser retrospectives are at least half as good as this one. (5 out of 5) |
- Oct 28th | |
![]() | 92.) Rubber (2010) (Blu-Ray)** My Thoughts: Well I liked what they were trying to do here but it just felt a little flat for me. A bit too heavy handed with the script. I often found myself thinking of the person writing this as opposed to actually being engrossed in watching it. (2.5 out of 5) My Wife's Thoughts: It is extremely creepy and so many questions the story. But most of story did not connect that well. Suddenly just tire is killing start killing people but it is funny... the ending. So I can give probably 3 star. I thought tire speak or something... but it didn't. (3 out of 5) |
![]() | 93.) The Walking Dead S03E03 (2012) (TV) (Wild Card #2)* My Thoughts:Merle! And what seems to be the town from Jericho, or at least their evil doppelganger. I can see the resource stealing but killing humans in this economy doesn't seem like the best idea. Anyway another good episode, I was just thinking we needed some new characters. Merles coming for you Rick!(Wild card for length). (4 out of 5) |
- Oct 29th | |
![]() | 94.) The Deadly Spawn (1983) (DVD)* My Thoughts: A great cheesy 80's monster flick. Were monsters ever scary in the 80's or was it just the decade of rubber creatures? Meets all of my criteria, just wish I saw it a bit earlier in the challenge before the horror fatigue started setting in. On another note I must say that I was a little miffed as the BR came out right after I bought the DVD! (4 out of 5) |
![]() | 95.) An American Werewolf In London (1981) (Blu-Ray) My Thoughts: Easily one of the best werewolf movies ever made. Also some of the best transformations ever. Which is why the sequel was such a travesty, or at least that is how I remember it, never watched it again since it's initial VHS release. Speaking of VHS this blu-ray is an amazing leap forward from my old tape of this movie, glad I skipped the DVD. (5 out of 5) |
![]() | 96.) Cursed (2005) (DVD)** My Thoughts: Ah crap it's the PG-13 version. Did they learn nothing from Supernova? But then looking up the differenced in the two versions I find out that they never finished the effects in the unrated version. So it looks like you are screwed either way with this one. It is a shame because I liked it a bit. I love Ricci and it is a passible horror movie but the ratings issues and the CG wolfs detracted quite a bit, especially after An American Werewolf In London. Also Peter from Fringe, not really an intimidating foe. (3 out of 5) My Wife's Thoughts: Very unrealistic and so host died ... other people is recovered? I am not sure about that exact what happen. Many famous ... future famous people in that movie. Demo nanka similar as Michael J Fox wolf movie, similar ne? (3.5 out of 5) |
![]() | 97.) Beware The Moon (2009) (DVD)* My Thoughts: An above average retrospective. They did skimp a bit on the host/narrator but otherwise pretty interesting. This could have benefited quite a bit from some more behind the scenes footage and some where is it now prop segments. (3.5 out of 5) |
- Oct 30th | |
![]() | 98.) Commentary For An American Werewolf In London (1981) (Blu-Ray)* My Thoughts: A bit of retread with the documentary but still pretty satisfying. I liked that they got the two male leads and it wasn't just the director droning on. But it could have been even better had they got that saucy Brit to join. (3.5 out of 5) |
![]() | 99.) Scooby-Doo!: Camp Scare (2010) (TV)* My Thoughts: Didn't really hit the spot for me like the older series does. There is just something... off about the animation. I do like that Daphne is in Daisy Dukes now though. Also a summer camp doesn't really have the Scooby feel, or at least not this one. But I might be being a bit over critical of a children's show. Meh. (3 out of 5) |
![]() | 100.) Tomie: Re-Birth (2001) (DVD) My Thoughts: Oh Tomie, you know those guys are just going to end up killing you over and over again. This was an interesting premise that spawned way way too many sequels. Revisiting it now it is amazing how much Tomie is like the current internet meme Overly Attached Girlfriend. Also while at time defiantly super creepy there is nothing really that scary about a hot Japanese chick, demon or not. And then Audition pops into my head... (3 out of 5) |
![]() | 101.) The Pyx (1973) (Internet)* My Thoughts: I just don't like Karen Black, she bugs me. That and the quality of the youtube video was atrocious. Any those two factors did color my experience with this one, so grain of salt if you are a Karen Black fan. There were a few aspects I liked in the one, the drugged up hookers, the pushy cop, the cult. But there was not near enough of the latter, it almost felt shoehorned in. Kind of like someone saw The Wicker Man and said wow that was good, lets change our hooker killer to a cult! (2 out of 5) |
![]() | 102.) Whoever Slew Auntie Roo? (1972) (DVD)** My Thoughts: Well this was a weird one. An older horror movie for kids staring a deranged Shelly Winters and that kid from Oliver. I am not really sure if I like it or not... It did hold my interest though. (3 out of 5) My Wife's Thoughts: That is very very mean, ne? Mean story. Christopher is always orphan and he is kind of bad too. And I do not understand the purpose of story because she was not that really bad person so 3 star. (3 out of 5) |
- Oct 31st | |
![]() | 103.) Lethal Obsession (2010) (DVD)* My Thoughts: And we have a winner for worst movie of the challenge. Bad video quality, acting, sound mixing, script, everything, everything about this movie sucked. But I would have guessed as much, this was a freebie thrown in when I went to collect my Horror Move Empire $10 Blue Underground sale refund. And might have been the first one out on the next BB upgrade and save if it had had a barcode. One of the few movies that has the dubious distinction of having attaining my lowest possible score. (1 out of 5) |
![]() | 104.) Monster House (2006) (DVD) My Thoughts: A surprisingly good Halloween kids movie, I do wish I had waited and gotten the 3D BR as It has got to look amazing. Buscemi is a great choice as a craggy old man and it is a nice fresh take on the haunted house trope. I think I may need to upgrade this title. (3.5 out of 5) |
![]() | 105.) The Last Warning (1929) (Internet)* My Thoughts: I looked an looked for a 20's talkie horror movie but came up short. I reluctantly settled on this one and it was actually pretty good. A bit of a Phantom of the Opera/haunting thing going on. I think you could dub this movie and it would play well against a lot of 30's-50's horror. Compelling, interesting, great location set piece. I recommend it for anyone looking for a 20's film to watch next year or even for non challenge related reasons. (3.5 out of 5) |
![]() | 106.) Human Centipede 2: The Full Sequence (2011) (Blu-Ray)** My Thoughts: I was a little worried that the sequel wouldn't really retain any shock value after watching the first one, well I was wrong, very very wrong. This movie is over the top demented, sick and twisted. I like how they sequelized the first one and this really was a great movie to end the challenge on. (4 out of 5) My Wife's Thoughts: I was so excited before I see Human Centipede 2 but this is the grossest movie ever. Traumatic, I can not sleep tonight, it is the grossest. Martin guy so cross creepy man, I wanted to know he has other movie or not. (5 out of 5) |
