Dir.: Freddie Francis. Star: Christopher Lee.
In a German mountain town, a student’s voluptuous blond girlfriend becomes Dracula’s latest conquest. 3rd Dracula film with Lee in the role. Atmospheric direction but the script is strictly by-the-numbers. Despite the blood, this was given a "G" rating in the U.S.

2. VAMPIRE HUNTER D (1985/Japan, 80 min., color, anime vampire horror) VHS (dubbed in English)
Dir.: Toyoo Ashida.
In the far future a 10,000-year-old vampire attempts to take a human bride, but a Vampire Hunter who happens to be half-vampire intervenes. Simple story but stylishly directed and full of imaginative action and gore.


3. FRANKENSTEIN MUST BE DESTROYED (1969/UK, 101 min., color, horror/Hammer-WB) DVD
Dir.: Terence Fisher. Star: Peter Cushing.
One of the better, more suspenseful entries in the Hammer Frankenstein series as the bad doctor successfully undertakes the very first brain transplant, all in the aim of “progress,” although he engages in the most sociopathic behavior he’s ever displayed on screen in order to achieve it. The surgery scene is pretty gruesome. Originally rated “M.”

4. VAMPIRE HUNTER D BLOODLUST (2000/Japan, 102 min., color, anime vampire horror) DVD (dubbed in English) Dir.: Yoshiaki Kawajiri.
Stylish and imaginative animated thriller with a romantic subtext, but lacks the heart it needed to make these characters work on an emotional level.

5. 28 DAYS LATER (2002/UK, 113 min., color, plague horror/Fox Searchlight) DVD
Dir.: Danny Boyle. Star: Cillian Murphy.
Suspenseful apocalyptic virus-themed survival thriller, but it gets really contrived toward the end, turning it into just another B-sci-fi thriller.

6. BABA YAGA (1973/Italy, 91 min., color, occult horror) VHS (dubbed in English)
Dir.: Corrado Farina. Star: Carroll Baker.
Oddball Italian occult drama about a female fashion photographer who comes under the sway of a mysterious older woman who turns out to be a witch. Despite several kinky touches, this is slow and talky and not a heck of a lot happens. Based on an Italian comic strip.

7. EXORCIST II: THE HERETIC (1977/U.S., 118 min., color, supernatural horror/Warner Bros.) VHS.
Dir.: John Boorman. Stars: Richard Burton, Linda Blair.
The demon from the first film gets a name and some global reach in this unusual sequel that can get silly at times but never fails to keep me emotionally involved in a way that the first film never did. Music by Ennio Morricone.

Dir.: Larry Cohen. Star: John Ryan
Mom gives birth to killer baby which then cuts a swath across L.A. There’s no suspense because no one acts with any urgency about it. Both of the parents behave like they’re crazy, so it’s hard to feel sympathy for anybody except the poor monster baby. Music by Bernard Herrmann.

A female student researching witchcraft makes a fateful visit to a New England town run by a witch coven. Suspenseful and atmospheric but suffers from a hasty, contrived ending. Filmed in England.

10. HORROR EXPRESS (1972/Spain-U.K., 88 min., color, horror-sci-fi) Beta SP
Dir.: Eugenio Martin. Stars: Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing.
An alien entity possesses various people aboard the Trans-Siberian Express and only Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing can combat it. Great to see these two in proactive heroic team-up mode. Nicely shot and acted. A good one.

11. THE LEGEND OF THE SEVEN GOLDEN VAMPIRES (1974/Hong Kong-U.K., 83 min., color, Kung fu-horror/Hammer-Shaw Bros.) VHS (in English)
Dir.: Roy Ward Baker. Stars: Peter Cushing, David Chiang.
Hammer horror meets Shaw Bros. kung fu. Cushing reprises his Van Helsing role on a trip to China in 1904 to root out the vampires of the title. Weak on the vampire lore, but strong on the kung fu. Filmed in Hong Kong.



12. KURONEKO (1968/Japan, 99 min., b&w, ghost horror) DVD (in Japanese with English subs.) Dir.: Kaneto Shindo.
A samurai’s wife and mother are raped and murdered by a band of roaming samurai and they become ghosts in order to wreak vengeance. Then the samurai comes back and confronts them. Very stylized and beautifully designed and photographed in black-and-white.

13. DRACULA, PRINCE OF DARKNESS (1965/UK, 90 min., color, vampire horror/Hammer) VHS Dir.: Terence Fisher. Star: Christopher Lee.
Four English tourists to the Carpathian mountains are targeted as prey, but two wind up fighting back. Lee’s Dracula never utters a line in this one. A direct follow-up to HORROR OF DRACULA, but not nearly as good.

14. ONIBABA (1964/Japan, 102 min., b&w, period drama with horror elements) DVD (in Japanese with English subtitles)
Dir.: Kaneto Shindo.
A woman and her daughter-in-law waylay and murder wandering samurai and steal their armor and weapons in order to eat. A samurai’s demon mask becomes both a useful and deadly tool. Starkly beautiful drama with way more sex and nudity than I’ve ever seen in a Japanese film from the 1960s.

15. MURDERS IN THE RUE MORGUE (1932/U.S., 61 min., b&w, horror/Universal) VHS
Dir.: Robert Florey. Star: Bela Lugosi.
Lugosi as a madman trying to mix ape blood with human blood—for no discernible purpose. Bizarre premise, but beautifully atmospheric sets. First-time viewing for Lugosi’s 130th birthday.

16. THE OCCUPANT (1984/Hong Kong, 91 min., color, comedy-horror) DVD (in Cantonese with English subs.)
Dir.: Ronny Yu. Stars: Sally Yeh, Chow Yun-Fat.
Mixture of comedy, romance, and ghost lore as only Hong Kong can do it. Sally Yeh plays a Canadian graduate student visiting HK to do her thesis on Chinese superstition and gets more than she bargained for when she rents a haunted apartment. Chow Yun-Fat plays a sympathetic cop. The two would be reunited in John Woo’s THE KILLER five years later. Early film by the director of BRIDE WITH WHITE HAIR.

17. ISLAND OF LOST SOULS (1933/U.S., 70 min., b&w, horror/Paramount) VHS
Dir.: Erle C. Kenton. Stars: Charles Laughton, Richard Arlen, Bela Lugosi.
A masterpiece. The makeup jobs on the man-beasts are incredible. Very suspenseful and very dark and brutal, as only a pre-Code film could be. Charles Laughton gives one of his most striking performances as the sociopathic Dr. Moreau.


18. THE INVISIBLE MAN (1933/U.S., 71 min., b&w, sci-fi-horror/Universal) VHS
Dir.: James Whale. Stars: Claude Rains, Gloria Stuart.
Another masterpiece. The special effects are as spectacular today as they were when I was a kid first seeing this on TV. Rains conveys the madness of the character entirely by voice and body movements since we don’t see his face.

19. INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS (1956/U.S., 80 min., b&w, sci-fi-horror/Allied Artists) DVD
Dir.: Don Siegel. Stars: Kevin McCarthy, Dana Wynter.
Incredibly suspenseful thriller about pods from outer space that take over the residents of Santa Mira, with one man mightily resisting. An absolute classic and one of the best American sci-fi films of all time.  

20. MAD LOVE (1935/U.S., 70 min., b&w, horror, MGM) VHS
Dir.: Karl Freund. Stars: Peter Lorre, Colin Clive.
Peter Lorre and Colin Clive in one movie?! That’s just way too intense. Each of them has a plotline requiring their own movie. Clive plays a pianist who gets the hands of a murderer grafted on, while Lorre, the surgeon, is obsessed with Clive’s wife and even has a full-size wax dummy of her in his Paris apartment. The two plots don’t mesh well. Still, it’s an utterly insane and unforgettable movie.

21. THE DARK EYES OF LONDON (aka, THE HUMAN MONSTER, 1939/U.K., 76 min., b&w, horror-crime) Beta SP
Dir.: Walter Summers. Star: Bela Lugosi.
Lugosi plays an insurance broker who uses a home for the blind to cover up a series of murders of his clients, all part of a scam to get their insurance money. Sounds like a pretty poor business plan, if you ask me. The horror comes from a monstrous blind ape-like killer named Jake, who commits some of the murders.

22. DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE (1932/U.S., 96 min., b&w, sci-fi drama/Paramount) VHS
Dir.: Rouben Mamoulian. Star: Fredric March.
First time a star of a horror movie has won the Best Actor Academy Award (and only time unless you count SILENCE OF THE LAMBS as a horror film). March is magnificent. And the makeup effects were way ahead of their time. A pre-Code masterpiece.

Dir.: Tod Browning. Star: Olga Baclanova.
One of the most bizarre movies to come out of the Golden Age of Hollywood, doubly surprising that it came out of MGM. It has a lot of humor in it, though, which tends to have gotten overshadowed by its horrific ending.

24. HUMAN LANTERNS (1982/Hong Kong, 91 min., color, kung fu horror/Shaw Bros.) R3 DVD (in Mandarin with English subtitles)
Dir.: Sun Chung. Stars: Chen Kuan Tai, Lo Lieh.
Gruesome period film with Lo Lieh as a crazed kung fu master who, fueled by a desire for vengeance against the nobleman who defeated him years earlier, abducts beautiful women and uses their skin to make lanterns. The plot never made sense to me.

25. THE GHOST BREAKERS (1940/U.S., 85 min., b&w, horror comedy/Paramount) DVD
Dir.: George Marshall. Stars: Bob Hope, Paulette Goddard.
Arguably the first true horror comedy. In fact, despite the number of funny lines delivered by Hope and his black sidekick, Willie Best, the film is dominated by its horror elements, including ghosts, a zombie, and an old dark castle in Cuba.

26. VAMPIRE PRINCESS MIYU (1997/Japan, color, anime occult horror TV series) VHS (in Japanese with English subs.) Dir.: Toshiki Hirano.
#1: The Fang Knows
#2: At the Next Station
#3: The Forest Calls
#4: Reiha Has Come
Powerful mix of horror and poetry as only Japanese animators can do it. Miyu uses ancient methods to root out “shinmas” (cast-out demon gods) from the human world. Beautiful score by Kenji Kawai.

27. THE MUMMY (1959/UK, 88 min., color, horror/Hammer Studios) VHS Dir.: Terence Fisher. Stars: Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee.
Pretty good remake of the Karloff MUMMY from 1932. Lee is actually quite expressive under those bandages. The one Egyptian voice decrying the desecration of the tombs is quite eloquent, while the Brits are shown to be arrogant, condescending and bigoted, giving this an interesting political angle at a time when the anti-colonial spirit was breaking up the British Empire.

28a. VAMPIRE WARS (1990/Japan, 50 min, color, anime horror thriller) VHS (in Japanese with English subs.) Dir.: Kazuhisa Takenouchi.
Made-for-video action thriller with extraterrestrial vampires at war with the CIA with a former terrorist from Japan caught in the middle trying to protect a pop singer with vampire blood from both sides. Far-fetched but filled with nonstop action, gunplay and bloodshed. The fourth anime title beginning with "Vampire" that I've seen for this challenge.

28b. TOKYO REVELATION (1994/Japan, 55 min., color, anime occult thriller) DVD (in Japanese with English subs.) Dir.: Osamu Yamasaki.
Made-for-video thriller of demons using high school teens in their war against humans and their “spiritual ninja” protectors. Lots of action and nudity. Very stylishly directed.

29. THE MASK OF FU MANCHU (1932/U.S. 68 min., b&w, horror/sci-fi adventure/MGM) VHS. Dir.: Charles Brabin. Star: Boris Karloff.
Deliciously insane racial adventure with the Brits opposing the “yellow peril” posed by Fu Manchu who seeks the sword and mask of Genghis Khan in order to lead the Asian races in a worldwide rampage against the whites. Karloff at his best as Fu Manchu.

30. THE SHUTTERED ROOM (1967/UK, 99 min., color, horror thriller/WB) VHS
Dir.: David Greene. Stars: Gig Young, Carol Lynley.
Isolated New England island with inbred population gets visit from a woman who lived there as a child, accompanied by her “city slicker” husband, only to be confronted by the mystery that plagued her years there as a child. Based on Lovecraft. Weak ending, but I found it interesting up to that point.

31. NINJA SCROLL (1993/Japan, 94 min., color, anime supernatural ninja adventure) VHS (in Japanese with English subs.) Dir.: Yoshiaki Kawajiri.
(Wild Card) No listing I can find labels this as horror, but it sure has enough horror elements in it to make it suitable for this challenge, thanks to the 8 Devils of Kimon, who include a rock monster who pulls arms off of opposing ninjas and drinks their blood and a snake woman who slides around a pool seductively and sheds her skin to elude capture and a hunchback whose hunch houses a nest of hornets. Then there’s the poison-emitting heroine who can’t touch the man she loves for fear of killing him. So I include this as a wild card.

1. Shuttle* (2008)
Dark story where four weary travellers bent on hooking up make not-so-wise of a decision to board a bargain-priced shuttle. Love the "down" ending!
2. The Lodger* (2009)
Whoops, I think I've stepped into a police procedural. This should still qualify as a horror movie, as it has a Jack the Ripper copycat serial killer. It was interesting enough, though it doesn't help that I figured out the ending midway through. Or did I? Did Malcolm actually exist? Mysterious cap to the ending.

3. Undead or Alive* (2007)
Chris Kattan in a zombie western. How good can this possibly be? I guess there was enough zombie mayhem to make it tolerable. Copout of an ending, though. Some significant events happen offscreen, like they ran out of budget. Yeah, a hesitant 3 stars.
4. I Know Who Killed Me* (2007)
Stigmatic twins? Really? Lindsay Lohan plays the only stripper in the club who doesn't have to take her clothes off. Silver lining: There is a Melvins song in this movie.

5. Hellraiser: Revelations* (2011)
Soup drinking! Sacrificial hookers! Testicular chin hair! Like the box, I just had to know. This Nick Eversman (Steven) should not be allowed in movies. Painful.
6. The Cabin in the Woods* (2011)
I try to live my life without expectations. I'll only be let down, right? Well, I think I let them get in the way with this movie. I have seen nothing but rave reviews. It seems to demand a re-viewing, so I'll definitely give it another chance. It was an interesting premise, if overly clever.

7. Elevator* (2011)
Another people-trapped-in-a-confined-space movie, which I'm all for. Similar to Devil, minus the supernatural aspect. Decent enough, fairly intense.
8. Vampires: Los Muertos* (2002)
Jon Bon Jovi is a vampire slayer... and a surfer. Have I lost you yet? Actually, the surfing part I'm unsure of. Was he speaking metaphorically? See, he has a surfboard that houses his vampire "tools," and at one point he mentions he'd "rather be surfing." Whatever. Of note: Their winch was on the fritz. That gave me a few laughs. You'd think they'd have everything in tip-top shape when they go out toasting vampires. Anyway, this was about as good as the first one, which wasn't all that great.

9. The Victim* (2011) zero stars
Dear Lord, not another driving scene! What is this, Manos: The Hands of Fate? Brain-dead dialogue. Half the scenes go on entirely too long. The blame falls squarely on writer/director/star/hero/villain Michael Biehn (not editor Vance Crofoot, who we're treated to at the end of the film, along with the craft service girl). Just a hunch. Biehn plays Kyle, some guy staying in a cabin in the woods. The unexpected Annie shows up at the door, insisting two men are after her. Lucky for Kyle, young and beautiful Annie "always had a thing for older men." So we're treated to an extended, out-of-thin-air sex scene with our 54-year old star. Yes, this film was worse than one that had cast Jon Bon Jovi as a vampire slayer.
10. Wes Craven's New Nightmare (1994)
Heather Langencamp plays herself, and is living Wes Craven's new script. Pretty clever, eh?

Kind of slow and a little light on scares. Still effective, though. Strong acting and story.
12. Deadtime Stories Vol. 2* (2011)
This is an anthology of short stories presented by George A. Romero.
The Gorge - Donna is a "Caver," and develops quite a taste for human flesh.
On Sabbath Hill - Professor Weaver doesn't like it when someone misses his class.
Dust - Alex has discovered a "dust" that cures cancer and makes you horny.
I want to say that these all sucked, but Dust was mildly interesting.

More clown! As a general rule, if you're going to make a zombie apocalypse movie, you're stuck with comparisons to Romero and The Walking Dead. You can't keep that kind of company. I found plenty to like here, but there were weaknesses as well. The "walkers" didn't seem to pose much of a threat, and the film ends abruptly.
22. The Haunting of Marsten Manor* (2007)
PG-rated ghost story where a blind woman inherits a mansion from an aunt she never met. An entire subplot plays out as an "imprint" concerning her ancestors' connection to the Civil War. Eh.

Maybe it's wrong of me to judge these so harshly after watching American Horror Story, but Ghost Stories are straight from the Museum of The Hard to Believe. Empty. Total hokum. Their EVP guy uses a microcassette recorder, and they show a handheld recorder with a TDK D cassette in it, as well. No wonder there are so many anomalies! It's funny because I'm sure they would argue that the cheap equipment is best for recording voices. Also, the "Sixth Sense Boy" (who has a tattoo of a Honda logo on his neck) who takes pictures of "orbs"; You've got dust particles, genius. Ghost Stories 4 gets an extra star solely because of the messed up picture of the murderer.

27. Bride of Re-Animator* (1989)
Grisly black comedy (what would you expect, right?) that takes place 8 months after the original Re-Animator ends. Aptly titled sequel. Fun and chaotic ending with Dr. West's rejected creations in the crypt next door.
28. Resident Evil: Apocalypse* (2004)
Action has got to be my least favorite genre. Given that, RE:A was ok for big, dumb fun. Hey, it was a buck!
29. Teeth (2007)
Hmm, how do I put this delicately? Dawn's vagina has teeth. I think... I've said... too much. It's called vagina dentata, and was widely considered a myth (at least as far as this movie's concerned). Dawn seems to have some real creeps in her life, and can effectively exact revenge on them. Gruesome and cringe-worthy. An interesting dark comedy!

30. The 'Burbs (1989)
If memory serves me correctly (or IMSMC), The 'Burbs was not well received by critics. It has definitely gained an audience since, and may even be considered a cult classic. Ray (Tom Hanks) gets some new neighbors, the Klopeks, who are reclusive and a little strange. Well, his ultra-nosy neighborhood will not stand for it. Some ill-advised schemes lead them to the truth eventually, and it's loads of fun along the way. Great ensemble cast. One of my favorites.
31. Some Guy Who Kills People* (2011)
Ken is 34, still lives with his mom (after a stint in the mental hospital, that is), and works at an ice cream parlor. He is potentially Some Guy, accused of killing off the basketball team from his former high school. I liked the tone of this movie, and thought it was particularly well-cast. The sheriff (Barry Bostwick) was an absolute riot.

32. Rosewood Lane* (2011)
YES WE HAVE ESTABLISHED THIS IS ROSEWOOD LANE. Fucking 7 establishing shots, all of the same sign. And an additional 2 to Stillwater, in case no one knows what town she was approaching on her way home from work every night. Sorry, I lost my mind for a minute. Rose McGowan is Sonny, a radio shrink, who has to contend with a psychotic, nursery rhyme-spewing paperboy. Detective Briggs (Ray Wise) and his partner are particularly dense. Quite infuriating. A solid 8.5 on the Silly Meter.
33. Bloody Murder (2000)
Trevor Moorehouse is (stop me if you've heard this before) a psycho killer with a chainsaw who preys on kids at a summer camp. But enough about him, this movie isn't really even about him. It's about saying please and thank you, just like your mom taught you. Seriously, this is the most polite slasher movie ever.
34. Bloody Murder 2* (2003)
Hot paging action! Trevor Moorehouse is real, right? That's who all the kids talk about. This sequel ups the gore and nudity, as well as the writing. A considerable step up over the first picture. Ok, this theory might sound crazy, but I think there may be some truth to it: There's one actress (Tiffany Shepis, quite busy as it turns out) who agreed to be naked in multiple scenes. I think she was rewarded for this with a makeover! She just mysteriously appears all dolled up, with a different hairstyle, about 20 minutes into the movie. Bear in mind this takes place in the middle of the woods.

35. Junior* (2002)
Unrecognizable accents in an unrecognizable location. Not even the stars know where they are. Sandra and Rebecca are friends. Really close ones. I mean to the point where I think it's a lesbian relationship. Unless they do things differently in Belgium (yes, I had to look it up). Their car breaks down in the middle of nowhere, and things go south from there. I can't imagine the first hour of the movie is more than a few script pages. Just agonizingly long, pointless scenes. Until there's a big exposition scene with the father. From there, it gets a tad interesting, hence the extra star. "Junior" himself, for having brain damage, is really quite agile. Like the guy is a dancer or something. Downright goofy.
36. Deadly Species* (2002)
I am in full screen hell! The last 4 movies (Bloody Murder/Bloody Murder 2/Junior/Deadly Species) are part of a set, and constitute a Full Frame Fest. Dr. Thomas is heading an expedition into the Florida Everglades to search for the elusive Calusa Indian tribe. Wilson Friels, their financier (or maybe he just donated the money, I don't know), mysteriously wants to be along for the ride. Seems the entrance to the Calusa sacred area holds the secrets to life and death. But the team needs to watch their hides, as there is a creature who guards it. Pervert alert! Major camel toe sighting, down the shirt shots, and a few naked ladies. Deadly Species is probably the most well-made of the collection, despite the fact it has men in rubber suits running around in it.
37. Doghouse* (2009)
Vince and his mates have gone roundabout on holiday. Or something. What, I have to deal with British slang? At the 20-minute mark, I turned on the subtitles. Much better. I'm sure inevitable comparisons have been made to Shaun of the Dead, but this movie holds its own. Six friends feel a need to get away from everyday life, and visit Moodley, a tiny dead-end town 300 miles outside London. Upon arrival, they encounter "Project Cathouse," involving a virus that has infected the female population, turning them into savage zombies. They'll have to contend with a zombie hairdresser, dentist, hooker, jockey, old lady with a walker, butcher, bride, and a gaggle of zombie groupies, amongst others. The most fun zombie romp I've seen in some time.

38. ATM* (2012)
The front cover of this movie says "From the writer of Buried". Guess he's confining himself to a rather specific genre. Eh? Get it?? David, Corey, and Emily leave their office Christmas party and stop at an ATM on the way home. Some psycho traps them inside. That's about it. I was a little baffled by the ending.

Spoiler:

First, I thought it was ingenious how David was framed for everything that went on, shown in clips from the security camera. I saw it all happen, and didn't put it together. Second, what exactly was the motive of The Man in the Jacket? Was this never revealed? It just shows him planning his next attack.

Did I mention Corey is a massive douche? Imagine being trapped in a room with that guy. In the behind-the-scenes extra on the disc, actor Josh Peck says he was allowed to "bring some comedy to the character." That was news to me.
39. Deadgirl (2008)
Dark, dark, incredibly dark. Deadgirl is all kinds of wrong. The first time I saw this movie, I absolutely hated it. Trying to go in with more of an open mind the second time through, I was able to appreciate how horrific it really is. Rickie and JT are twentysomething high school students (uh, with a BMX bike - See, they're in high school!). Complete degenerates. Guess I had to accept that, too. Anyway, one day while ditching class, smoking, drinking, and vandalizing, they discover a deadgirl, essentially a zombie, in an abandoned mental hospital. JT develops an unhealthy obsession with her. Yep, there's corpse-fucking. He lets his buddy Wheeler get in on some of the action. They even peer pressure/trick the jock into having his way with her. These guys seem to have no problem doing it in front of other guys. Creepy!

40. Chain Letter* (2010)
What are the odds that I'm viewing another Noah Segan (Deadgirl) high school movie? I looked him up on imdb, and he was born in 1983! Time to retire this teenage shit. Seems any movie revolving around video games/computers/technology automatically blows. This movie is no exception. Neil (Cody Kasch) receives a chain letter (whoo-hoo!), and it gets passed on to four friends and relatives. Ignore it and you die. CHAIN LETTER! The box says: As time runs out and the deadly letter's rules become more challenging, the survivors must untangle this chilling secret. I'm not sure what there is to untangle. Ignore the message, and you are treated with a visit from a giant deformed creep. A subplot about an anti-technology cult is touched upon, but not explored. Many gruesome chain-related deaths and a grim ending cannot save this turkey, turkey!

I have to admit that the sole motivation for viewing this movie for me was to see Deal or No Deal's Leyla Milani (#13, Me-ow!) play a porn star. Short of being naked (I wonder if that was part of her Deal or No Deal contract), we do get girl-on-girl-on-girl action, skimpy outfits, ass spanking, Leyla covered in blood, and a spread-eagle scene in cut-off shorts. She does have her top off at one point, but is seen from behind. Oh yeah, the movie: An amateur porn film crew is lost when they happen upon an old gas station. The old man (Irwin Keyes) there directs them PAST the notorious ghost town of La Sangre de Dios. As luck would have it, their van breaks down directly at the front gate. Mexican legend says that wrestler El Mascarado resides there. Or at least his ghost. Or something. Wait, wasn't he built out of other wrestler's body parts? Am I overexplaining this? Anyway, considered to be the greatest Mexican wrestler of all time, he was known to kill opponents in the ring. In the spirit of removing a wrestler's mask (the ultimate humiliation), El Mascarado removes people's faces. You heard right.
42.5 Eden Lake* (2008) ★★★★★
"The quarry's fucking stunning." Steve and Jenny are going on a lovely holiday. One of Steve's favorite vacation spots is going to be developed into executive estates, and he wants to go this one last time to propose to his girlfriend. They camp by the lake on the beach, "off the map," seemingly in seclusion. Only a group of local toughs show up to encroach on their good time. And man oh man, it doesn't go well. We witness Steve making mistake after mistake, but really, are his actions so far fetched? Realistically portrayed and genuinely frightening. Not out of the realm of possibilities (maybe save for some of the later coincidences) of what could happen to you or I. No supernatural wrestler in this one. Solid ending (that is, if you know what kind of ending I like).

There is a killer on the loose dressed as Cinderhella. You know, from the movies. No? Detention is a definitively quirky film, chock full of pop culture references. Like annoyingly full. Never thought I'd say that. I think maybe there was a day when I would like this kind of movie -- So I can see an audience for it, just not me. What if it was made in the 90s, and primarily referred to the 80s? And I was still into off-kilter-for-the-sake-of-being-off-kilter movies? Nah, Detention would still suck.
45.5. Silent House* (2011) ★★
Sarah (Elizabeth Olsen), her father, and her uncle Pete are fixing up an old family house in order to sell it. They've had trouble with vandals and squatters, and have had enough. Are strangers still in the house? Uh, basically everything's a red herring, so I wouldn't worry about it too much. Silent House is interestingly presented; Made to look like a single camera shot, primarily following Sarah around. This can also be a little disorienting, as it's pretty dark, and there's only one camera to capture what's happening. To be honest, I found myself thinking about Adventure Time through a portion of the movie, so it wasn't exactly the ultimate thrill ride.

Robin's Dean at her Community College, Mr. Grubeck, is the Slate River serial killer. The police catch him, but he uses "astral projection" to escape jail and kill some more. He wants Robin to be his mate IN HELL. Not if Spike Jones (?!) and his leather jacket and motorcycle and goofy noises can help it. At one point, I thought I was watching the Blues Brothers with all the car wrecks. Speaking of car wrecks, yeah, this wasn't very good.

48. Chopping Mall* (1986) ★★★
The Park Plaza shopping mall has a new high tech robot security system. While three robots patrol the mall, the employees of a furniture store have some sort of after hours sex party. Apparently due to a thunderstorm, the robots run amok. The partially-clothed partygoers wind up locked up in the mall, and have to fend for themselves. The gang employ some video game tactics -- Crawling through air ducts, and hurling propane tanks at the robots and shooting them. Hmm, ahead of their time! Chopping Mall boasts a not-so-awesome laser show, and a guy and his gum. Pretty good as far as these things go.
49. Waxwork* (1988) ★★
China and her friends go to a midnight showing at a "waxwork" -- Kind of a ghoulish Madame Tussauds. Only if you walk into the display, you go back in time and live out the horror represented in the scene. Once/if you are killed, you are forever preserved in the scene. Tony goes back, talks to a pine tree, and gets turned into a werewolf. China encounters exploding vampires. There are, uh, "tributes," for lack of a better word to The Mummy, It's Alive, Night of the Living Dead, and Little Shop of Horrors. There is midget abuse, extended swordplay, excessive whipping, and unloaded guns. Waxwork seemed like it had quite a budget to work with, and man, what a colossal waste.

50. Wildcard GG Allin & the Murder Junkies Blood, Shit, and Fears (2012) ★★★
The shows on this disc are shown in a smaller box, for some reason. Not widescreen, a reduced size. Maybe it says something about the quality, because it's not very good. I think they may be running out of good GG Allin footage to (commercially) release. In case you don't know, the average concert contains a totally naked GG (save for the boots... and his tiny weiner is clearly the star of the show), shitting, eating it, smearing himself with it, and hurling it at the crowd. He beats himself up with the mic or a can, bloodies himself, jams the mic up his ass, grabs and molests unwilling females, fights the crowd, and hurls stuff at them. 20-25 minutes seems to be the threshold for a show, whether that's GG's, the band's, or the club owner's threshold, I'm not sure. They're a horrible band, even by punk's standards (and I'm a punk fanatic). I see these as strange social experiments. The shows on here are:
- Memphis, TN 11/16/91 (23:25, with encore!) "I hope you all get killed on the way home!"
- New Orleans, LA 11/17/91 (17:54, starts part way into the show) There is really bad feedback throughout. Looks like a dumpy warehouse.
- Knoxville, TN 11/23/91 (24:29) Another warehouse. GG sings while fighting a fan! "We're bored."
- Youngstown, OH 5/12/93 (21:59) An actual club, and it's packed.
- Richmond, VA 5/13/93 (31:52) Shaky cam, epic length! "Don't come here and tell me that I owe you anything."
I would recommend any other commercially available GG Allin disc over this one (save for The Best of). Business as usual in fair quality.

51.5. Miner's Massacre* (2002) ★★
They axed for it! I can't read the credits. Is that a bad sign? What else can they screw up? Three couples who, quite frankly, seem to hate each other, go on a camping trip in search of some lost gold. What they don't know about is the curse of the Forty-Niner, Jeremiah Stone. If someone steals his gold, his ghost comes back to kill them. Wait. I Want Me Gold! This is cribbed straight from the pages of Leprechaun. Anyway, they steal the gold, get hunted, and find out from a hysterical, overwrought Aunt Nelly (Karen Black) that they need to return it to stop the curse. A few things amused me. Jeremiah bites off his own finger for no reason. A fender bender turns into a massive two car explosion. And Aunt Nelly has apparently never heard of stop, drop, and roll.

A bunch of witches use the Sin n Skin strip "club" (what a dump) to lure patrons to their manor. Seems they need 666 sacrifices by All Hallow's Eve to please the Dark Lord. The sheer volume of boobs (yeah, the guys are boobs, too) in this movie was not enough to distract me from how poorly the story was told. The giant foam latex Dark Lord took me back in time, however. More of a highlight than the naked ladies. Cheap and funny!
53.5. Insidious* (2011) ★★★★
Ah, the PG-13 horror movie. Where would we be without you? Well, we got The Sixth Sense and Drag Me to Hell. That's all I've got. Anyway, Insidious: Josh, Renai, and their three children move into a new house. Their son Dalton winds up in a coma. Due to a frightening series of events, Renai is convinced that the house is haunted. They ultimately decide to move into another home. Strange things continue to happen to Renai. Josh is skeptical. Renai initially calls a priest. She then brings in paranomal investigators, who have a lot more to offer. Turns out the house is not haunted, Dalton is. In the DVD extras, the screenwriter insists on taking sole credit for the "astral projection" genre. Guess he has never seen 976-EVIL 2 (not that I blame him).

54.5. The Last Resort* (2009) ★
Four lady friends throw their girlfriend a bachelorette party in Mexico. They go to a club and get hammered. Sophia hooks up with a guy, and misses out on the sightseeing tour the other women go on. Their "tour guides" wind up robbing them and stranding them in the middle of nowhere. The only place of refuge is an old abandoned resort. This place is bad news, brother. It turns everyone into a homicidal maniac. There is some half-assed history to the place, which is told through flashbacks, but does it make sense? Not particularly. Everyone is supposed to be "free." All of the men in this film are stupid sex and booze-driven assholes. Or criminals. One character just disappears. There's a tussle, then he's gone. The Last Resort is 75 minutes long, including a heavily padded 6 minutes of credits. Is there anything that Lionsgate won't put their name on? I've been wondering this for a while.
55.5. Driller* (2006) ★★
Some guy gets abducted by aliens from the back of his truck, and is turned into a killing machine. He looks like a homeless burglar fish, with a drill. He must have a place to clean his drill, as it's always pristine. Everyone is stupid in this movie. Every decision made is a stupid one. Homeless, loser bandmates (in wigs) need to get weed. Loser students need to get laid (and high). Redneck loser criminals need free stuff, and to rape women. There are particularly nauseating special effects. So I guess that guy deserves some credit. Sound good? It's not! This dog gets the full Special Edition treatment; Director's commentary, deleted scenes, and a 3 1/2 minute documentary. Intangible Factor: 6.0 (hence the extra star).

Alison is attending a Gross Anatomy class, and is staying in a room in the hospital until her financial aid comes through. She and her classmates Brian, Carlos, and Rick, are dissecting "Norma," a cadaver from Brazil with a mysterious past. Alison has a bad feeling that something is wrong with the spirit, and when bodies that have come in contact with Norma start turning up, she starts to panic. She goes for a swim in formaldehyde to try and save her friends, and herself. Interesting enough story that could've used a better ending.

58. 247 Degrees Fahrenheit* (2011) ★★
I think I saw this movie before when it was still called The Chaos Experiment. I'm normally into the people-trapped-in-a-confined-space genre, but this one, not so much. Four friends go out to a lakeside cabin. Michael's Uncle Wade got them tickets to a Pagan festival, but they want to check out the sauna at the cabin first. Have I mentioned that Michael is a world class fuck-up? Ian, Jenna, and Renne are trapped inside the sauna because of Michael's drunken shenanigans. He puts a ladder in front of the door, then promptly passes out on the couch. Renee's body is prominently shown off, and Jenna's is invariably covered up. Think this was a contractual thing? I have to admit Ian's breakdown scene was pretty amusing, like Ash in Army of Darkness. Don't know if that was intentional.

Kate is going to a party to screw George Clooney, only her friend has left without her. She can't get a cab, so she resorts to the underground subway system. She winds up falling asleep, and gets trapped inside. She is being stalked by a "creep" named Craig, a disfigured creature that dwells in the subway system. Just who exactly Craig is is a bit of a mystery. Is he the doctor's son? Was he the victim of experiments? To be honest, he just looks like some pasty British guy with bad posture. Seemingly, he is only capable of screeching (and of course killing!), but at one point he quotes one of his victims, like someone possessed. Creepy. Kate encounters several people along the way to help her escape, but every situation seems to have dire consequences.

Who does she see in the final seconds of the movie? Is Craig still alive? I don't think she killed him.

Join us! One of the Grand Poo-bahs of modern horror films. Countless movies have stolen from it, but none can match the inventiveness or sheer dread of The Evil Dead. Definitely goes for scares, as opposed to its sequels, which are primarily comedies.

I don't do camp. So I wouldn't know a good campy movie if it bit me on the ass. Is this one any good? Can someone tell me? Brody, Craig, and Doug are three violently unfunny buddies who move from Illinois to Los Angeles, and throw a party at their new "killer pad." Turns out there is a gateway to Hell in their basement, but the guys are convinced that the strange goings on are due to "squatters" (er, weightlifters?). Joey Lawrence dies, and Craig and Doug carry him through the party with sunglasses on. Partygoers recognize him. Blatant ripoff of Weekend At Bernies? Check. The beautiful neighbors that the guys are interested in turn out to be Satan (with a penis) and his/her minions. There are zero boobs to speak of, only a midget's ass. Ooh, pinch me. Did I mention that Robert Englund directed this? Did no one point out to him that gorgeous babes at a party in an R-rated horror comedy = bare tits? The talents of Bobby Lee (Mad TV) and Jeff Davis (Whose Line Is It Anyway?) are totally wasted here, as well.
63. Dead Birds* (2004) ★★★
Dead Birds takes place in Fairhope, Alabama in 1863. A group of criminals rob a bank, and have a hard time finding their hideout, an abandoned house in the middle of nowhere. I'm not entirely sure they even had the right house. On their way to Mexico, the gang is trapped in for the night because of a storm. Strange things start happening as the distrust over the stolen gold rises. They find a spell book for raising the dead. Turns out the farmer sacrificed his slaves in a ritual to bring his wife back. Strong story and acting, but I can't say that I completely understood the ending.

Ed Harley (Lance Henriksen) witnessed Pumpkinhead when he was a boy in 1957, mental note taken. Now (er, 1988, anyway), he runs a general store, and has a boy, Billy. Ed is a widower, but is that an excuse to be an incredibly irresponsible parent? He leaves 7-year old Billy in charge of the store and his dog. Billy is subsequently hit by a motorcycle. Ed comes back to find him on the ground. There is no phone at the store (?!), so Ed picks him up (error), and takes him home (another error) to cure Billy with a damp cloth (huh?). Guess what? The kid up and dies. You know the rest of the story; Ed seeks a decrepit old woman who can conjure up Pumpkinhead for revenge on one guilty kid, and several innocent ones. I know, who ever said horror movies had to be fair? But to be frank, Billy was just a victim of flat-out negligent parenting. Thumbs down!

Dear God,
One thing I've been thinking about -- The whole thing about relatives watching over you after they die really rubs me the wrong way. I do a lot of crazy shit while I'm alone, and I appreciate some privacy. I don't want to sound presumptuous, but if I do get into heaven, and my relatives have been watching over me, a lot of relationships will have been compromised.
Excellent performance from AnnaLynne McCord in this one.
66. Wind Chill* (2007) ★
Girl (they never introduce themselves to each other -- ha ha, really clever) catches a ride to Delaware from Guy, off of a message board. Is Guy who he says he is? By the 45-minute point, I could give a shit. It was at this point that I realized I was stuck in that movie. You know, the one where all the clocks stop, and history keeps repeating itself. Where you relive experiences, and there are ghosts of tragedies past. How many times have I seen this movie? An absolute groaner of a film with zero surprises. I gave the movie the finger when it was over. Shame on George Clooney and Steven Soderbergh for getting me to reach into my wallet.
67. May (2002) ★★★★
I had to end on a positive note. Kind of a companion piece to Excision. May is the awkward little girl with the lazy eye who has to wear a patch. She has trouble making friends, so her mother makes one for her ("Susie"). Years later, May (Angela Bettis) has fixed her eye with contacts, but is still the awkward, strange girl she's always been. She works at the animal hospital with lesbian Polly (a very hot, pre-blonde Anna Faris), and is fascinated with perfect body parts. She falls in love with Adam for his perfect hands. Susie ultimately starts cramping her style, so she rather rashly does something about it.

While trying to decide what to start off with, I flipped this on to have something horror running in the background. As usual, I got hooked and ended up watching the whole thing.... commercials and all.
2. Paranormal Activity 3☼ (2011, DVD)
I really liked the first one, and wanted to see the sequels as well (Part 2 is listed in the PRE-SHOW section as I watched it before the challenge started). Sometimes you need a good "jump right out at you" scare. The Paranormal Activity series provides.

I've seen RZ a few times on the Educated Horses tour and for the most part, that was a no frills RZ show. He pulled out the theatrics again on this tour so I got to experience the kind of show that I had only seen in pictures. I've never seen Marilyn Manson before. He was kind of boring, but the stage show kind of made up for it.

So, that's it. I didn't do as well as I would have hoped, but overall it wasn't too bad. Unfortunately, I didn't watch any new gems that I completely went ga-ga over. I finally watched The Birds in its entirety and I really liked that so I guess that was my top movie this year. On the other hand, I didn't watch anything that I absolutely hated so I call it a draw. I guess my biggest disappointment was Lake Mungo. I didn't dislike it, but I found it to be more of a drama than a horror movie and based on word of mouth, I was expecting to be scared.

So, I'm not very good at this whole "what counts/what doesn't" when it comes to stats so here is my makeshift version:

01. The Blood Beast Terror (1968)*
A police inspector investigates a series of savage killings. Not very involving with little suspense and mediocre creature effects. Even Peter Cushing can't raise this higher than average. 5/10
02. Candyman (1992)*
A graduate student interested in urban legends finds out more than she wants to know when she heads into the projects to track down Candyman. Very good with a nice gradual build up and several tension filled scenes. The intelligent story has some plot turns that took me by surprise since I was expecting a typical slasher/avenging spirit film. Effective score by Philip Glass. 7.5/10
03. Night of the Beast (1993)* aka Luka's Child (BCI/Eclipse Curse of the Dead 10 Movies)
A coven kidnaps young women, dresses them in lingerie and feeds them to a gargoyle. No, really, this happens over and over again. The sets, costumes and gargoyle suit are all pretty well done. The acting and the script are not. The leader of the coven, a middle aged guy in a wheel chair, is particularly awful. Lots of full and partial nudity and women in jail cells wearing lingerie. 4/10

04. Die, Monster, Die! (1965)
A woman's fiance arrives at her ancestral home and finds himself unwelcome and in the midst of strange and terrifying events. Pretty standard horror plot with a sci-fi twist. Nick Adams usually seems too surly to be the ideal hero and Karloff doesn't have much to do except act gruff and crusty. There are enough mysterious events to keep things interesting and the end is a lot of fun. 5/10
05. The Cabin in the Woods (2011)*
Five college students with a keg of beer go to an isolated cabin for a weekend of partying. Before long terrible things begin to happen. Unusual and clever take on an old horror chestnut. I had a lot of fun watching it but I'm not sure how good it would be a second time around. 7/10
06. Paranoiac (1963)* (Hammer Horror Series)
A brother, long thought to have committed suicide after the death of his parents, suddenly returns to his highly dysfunctional family. Nice blend of mystery, thriller and horror has strong performances all around and is nicely paced. The end seemed a little contrived though. 6/10

07. Mansion of the Doomed aka The Terror of Dr. Chaney (1976)* streaming YouTube
A surgeon attempts to cure his daughter's blindness by transplanting living eyes. He keeps the donors in a cell in his basement. Very watchable, largely due to Richard Basehart and his wonderful voice. The first half is a bit repetitious but once the focus changes to the caged donors things get interesting again. Cool ending. 5/10
08. The Boogie Man Will Get You (1942)* (Icons of Horror Boris Karloff)
Karloff is the muddled professor who invents a machine that will create supermen. Lorre is a local doctor who tries to cash in on the idea. Most of the movie is 1940's silliness but the scenes with Karloff and Lorre together are delightful. 5/10

09. Waxwork (1988)* (Lionsgate Horror Collection 8 Movie Pack)
Four friends take a midnight tour of a mysterious wax museum but only two of them come out. Wonderful tribute to classic and not so classic movie monsters is funny, well paced and quite exciting in spots. A ton of fun! 8/10

10. Maniac (1980)*
A deeply disturbed middle-aged man kills and mutilates beautiful young women in New York City. Dark, gritty and sleazy character study of a twisted individual. Joe Spinell is the show but his performance is enhanced by excellent pacing, a very effective score and a good supporting cast. Tension increases with each kill. Not an easy movie to watch but it excels in what it does. 9/10
11. Entrails of a Beautiful Woman (1986)*
A rape/revenge tale that heads for left field and just keeps on going. Very bizarre, full of nudity, sex (often non-consensual), violence, gore and even a penis monster. This is not your typical Yakuza story - you have been warned. Not really my cup of tea. 4/10
12. Beast of Blood (1970)* (The Blood Island Vacation Box Set)
Direct sequel to Mad Doctor of Blood Island has Dr. Foster returning to Blood Island only to find that the evil Dr. Lorca still lives! Dull, dull, dull - most of the film is spent traipsing around the jungle with an occasional firefight. Good solid monster action is pretty much limited to the last ten or fifteen minutes. Too bad because there's a decent low budget lab set and a cool detached monster head. Disappointing. 4/10

13. Dawn of the Dead Extended Version (1978)* (Dawn of the Dead Ultimate Edition)
It has been a while since I've seen the Theatrical Version so I can't say for sure what was extended but around two thirds of the way through I began thinking that some cuts were really needed. I always felt the whole consumerism commentary/satire was too heavy handed so the middle has always dragged for me. The end is still exciting with the zombies becoming part of the landscape, a natural force to be dealt with if possible. 6/10
14. May (2002)*
The story of a very strange and disturbed young woman and how she tries to make friends. Angela Bettis is excellent in this wonderfully weird story which is well paced and has a good supporting cast. You can't help feeling sympathetic toward May to the very end. 8/10
15. Panic Beats (1983)*
Due to the wife's heart condition a couple relocates to the husband's childhood home which is supposed to be haunted by the spirit of one of his ancestors. Good Paul Naschy vehicle starts off strong with some very atmospheric moments but then gets a bit dull in the middle. Things pick up as the body count begins to rise. Nice ending to a fairly standard story. 6/10
16. Totem (1999)*
Interesting, fairly original spin on cabin in the woods theme becomes convoluted almost to the point of incomprehensibility. Nice creature designs and adequate acting keep things entertaining. 5/10
17. Queen of Blood (1966) (MGM Limited Edition Collection)
Earth sends a rescue ship when an alien ambassador crashes on Mars. An old favorite gets even better due to an excellent new transfer. Much of the atmosphere comes from the Russian scenes but the American scenes do a good job maintaining the strangeness. 7/10
18. Blood Bath (1966)* (MGM Limited Edition Collection)
An artist, famous for his macabre paintings, is haunted or possibly possessed by an evil ancestor. Strange little movie is not always clear on what's going on but has some very effective scenes and a good cast. 6/10

19. Wes Craven's New Nightmare (1994)*
Scream Queen: Heather Langenkamp
Wes is working on a new Freddy movie while stars from previous films are having bad dreams. Wow, a suspenseful, creepy, sometimes scary Freddy movie? Its hard to believe. Some of the atmosphere and tension evaporate when Freddy finally fully appears but the movie still holds up to the end. May be my favorite NOES film. 7/10
20. From Beyond (1986)
Scream Queen: Barbara Crampton
Experiments designed to stimulate the pineal gland reveal mind shattering terrors. Lots of slimy ickiness and action but not all that much atmosphere. Entertaining in a messy kind of way. 5/10
21. Don't Go Near the Park (1979)*
Scream Queen: Linnea Quigley
A brother and sister are cursed to live for 12,000 years, aging but not dying. Film starts strong then loses all momentum when smart ass kid Nick and old fart Aldo Ray are introduced. When things pick up again the movie goes all WTF which actually is a good thing and avoids disaster. Hard to believe this was a Video Nasty. 6/10
22. ChromeSkull: Laid to Rest 2 (2011)*
Scream Queen: Danielle Harris
ChromeSkull gets better but he's not the only one on a rampage. Not quite as intense as the first one due to reveals about the killer and a ChromeSkull wannabe running around. Still the gore level is high and tension is maintained. The background info does make this film interesting if less "pure" than the first. 7/10
23. The Plague of Zombies (1966)*
A professor of medicine and one of his former students investigate a strange illness that is killing young men and women in an isolated village. Pretty standard stuff and ultimately predictable but very well done with a good cast and effective score. 7/10

24. The Exorcist III (1990)* (The Exorcist: The Complete Anthology)
A police detective tries to solve a series of gruesome murders which have certain aspects in common with those committed by a serial killer who has been dead for fifteen years. Pretty well done tale of possession has a nice buildup and some very creepy moments. Loses a bit of steam when certain rants go on for far too long but it's still an absorbing film. 7/10

A search for the cause of an outbreak of cannibalism in New York City leads investigators to a small island in the East Indies. There are NO frakkin' zombies in this movie at all! Cannibals, brain transplants, gore, but no zombies! Well, maybe one or two but they are very questionable mainly because by then you're not really sure what's going on. Still, an OK watch. 5/10

An unstable young man records a Macumbe (Brazilian voodoo) ceremony with terrible results. Here there be zombies! Kind of dull really, way too talky and a couple of the actors are pretty poor. No gut munchin' but plenty of eyeball pokin'. Kills are few and far between. 4/10

27. Creature From the Haunted Sea (1961)
A gangster helps smuggle out the Cuban treasury after Castro's revolution. Played strictly for laughs with a really silly looking monster that gets to go on a nice rampage at the end. I often find the humor in Corman's movies to be painful but this was at least mildly amusing with a couple of good lines. 4/10
28. The Incredible Melting Man (1977)* (MGM Limited Edition Collection)
An astronaut caught in a solar flare while in space returns to Earth horribly transformed, needing to consume living human flesh to survive. Very good low budget monster on the loose film is a cut above many due to outstanding gore and melting man effects which hold up well even today. If not a full body rubber suit, at least the head, face and hands are covered. 6/10
29. Curse of the Faceless Man (1958) (MGM Limited Edition Collection)
A stone figure without any facial features is found during excavations at Pompeii and it soon becomes apparent that the figure is alive. Interesting and well done variation on a mummy movie. OK script and acting with some scenes being particularly well photographed. Some good creepy scenes. Much better than I remembered - maybe helped by a nice clean image. Premier gorilla suit man Charles Gemora is credited for the costume. 6/10

30. Hour of the Wolf (1968)* Streaming Netflix
A painter is haunted by incidents from his past. I liked this and my liking grew the more I reflected on it as if pieces fell into place. It doesn't seem like a horror movie until the last 20-30 minutes but then tension just keeps growing and once horrible things begin happening they are quite shocking. Sounds, like the wind and ocean, are used very effectively and the film is filled with memorable images. 8/10
31. Marebito (2004)*
A video cameraman discovers a vast underground and returns with a strange, human like creature. Except for one sequence, the journey underground, the film doesn't work for me. Each part is interesting while happening but nothing ever comes together and several plot elements are brought up and then just dropped. At other times significant events happen and I can't figure out why. That journey beneath Tokyo really creeped me out though. 5/10

A teenage girl and her father move to small town Collinsville from New York and she gets interested in local history, especially Kane Barker owner of the long-closed ax factory who ended up murdering his wife. Strange. The first 50 minutes tells this story, the last 30 minutes is like a special feature making-of session. The story part works very well for a low budget indie film but there are significant plot gaps. Another 5-10 minutes of story instead of the 30 minute faux special feature would have helped a lot. 4/10
33. Chopping Mall (1986)* (Lionsgate Horror Collection 8 Movie Pack)
A group of mall employees, having an after hours party in one of the stores, is threatened by newfangled security robots run amok. Lots of fun with some likeable characters that help make the movie enjoyable. The right movie at the right time gets a 7/10.
34. Class of 1999 (1990)* (Lionsgate Horror Collection 8 Movie Pack)
A high school in the middle of a gang war zone gets three robotic teachers to educate and discipline. Think Mad Max goes to high school and meets The Terminator. Lots of action but that's about it and its fairly stupid on many levels. No surprises and no particularly likeable characters. 5/10
35. Beneath Loch Ness (2002)* (Echo Bridge Sharks, Piranhas, & Monsters 6 Movie Pack)
Researchers find something really big swimming around in Loch Ness. This movie sucked. It seems to have every cliche ever used in a Syfy movie and most of the characters range from annoying to total dicks. Much of the "action" is either character bickering or authority figures being dicks. The monster is generic and the effects are poor. Painful to sit through. The wrong movie at the wrong time gets a 1/10.

36. Final Exam (1981)*
At the end of finals' week a bunch of stereotypes run though some typical college hijinks until the killing begins. Very bland almost bloodless slasher with a soundtrack written by someone who studied the music from Halloween very carefully. The kills are unimaginative and the slasher looks like Micky Dolenz all pumped up on steroids. Subpar. 4/10
37. Sweet Sixteen (1982)*
The sheriff of a small Texas town is suddenly faced with multiple murders and all the victims are somehow related to a 15 year old girl who has just moved to town. Strong cast, suspenseful kills, and a darned good mystery story. Nice small town atmosphere and characters. Kind of a giallo set in Texas. 7/10
38. Slaughter High (1986)* (Lionsgate Horror Collection 8 Movie Pack)
A group of friends from high school gather at their old school for what the think is a reunion on the anniversary of the day one of their pranks accidentally disfigured the class nerd. Fun, variety of kills, some rather gruesome if a bit predictable. Interesting finish. Takes place on April Fool's Day. 6/10

A William "One Shot" Beaudine double feature that actually played together at one time. The titles pretty much say it all for these simple B movies. Both are entertaining although I liked Billy the Kid a bit more since it was faster paced with more action while JJ was a little talky. Both films featured great sheriffs. In JJ Jim Davis was a bundle of coiled energy while longtime B-movie and serial badman Roy Barcroft did a good job in his more fatherly role in Billy the Kid. Both get 5/10.

41. The Boogens (1981)*
Attempts to reopen a long abandoned silver mine result in a series of deadly events in the surrounding area. Usually the kind of movie I really like, this one just never gels for me. There's nothing major wrong with it, although some dialog is rather awkward, and the end is fun but along with the creature design, the movie is bland. 5/10
42. The Strangeness (1980)*
Some people explore an abandoned gold mine to determine whether it would be worth reopening. Very low budget but the cave sets are very impressive and realistic looking and provide a good sense of confined spaces. The action is often confusing and hard to follow but the acting is pretty good for this type of product. Good creature design but crude stop motion work. 4/10
43. Attack of the Giant Leeches (1959) (Echo Bridge Sharks, Piranhas, & Monsters 6 Movie Pack)
Title creatures stuff humans into an under-swamp cave for snacking. Nice B-movie goodness from the Cormans. The creatures don't look that good and the acting leaves a lot to be desired but it has an effective swampy feel to it. 5/10

44. Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed (1969)*
Dr. F needs info concerning the preservation of brains after death but the man who perfected the technique is now totally insane. Solid entry in the Hammer series. Cushing's Frankenstein is scarier and more of a psychopath than ever. The horror comes from the doctor's madness rather than any gore of which there is little. 6/10
45. House of Frankenstein (1944) (Frankenstein, The Legacy Collection)
Karloff gets to be the doctor while Glenn Strange plays the monster in this creature fest containing two stories linked by Karloff and his hunchbacked assistant Daniel. Almost every Universal horror player of the 1940's take part with Chaney as The Wolfman and Carradine as Dracula and including J.Carrol Naish, George Zucco, and Lionel Atwill. 5/10

46. Zombie Lake (1981)*
Dead Nazi soldiers rise from a lake when a girl goes skinny dipping. They start attacking the nearby village after a whole bunch of girls go skinny dipping all at once. Green faced Nazi zombies and lots of breasts (I lost count at 20) should have keep me more interested. Admittedly I was really tired and kept dozing off but I usually like this kind of stuff a lot more. 3/10

47. The Possession of Joel Delany (1972)*
The brother of a wealthy divorcee begins acting strangely and she eventually suspects supernatural forces are at work. Very slow build up works OK but the payoff was very disappointing for me -- the evilness looked silly and was hard to take seriously. There was a really creepy brother-sister relationship that was nicely done but none of the main characters were appealing. Really needed a few cuts as well. 5/10
48. Repo: The Genetic Opera (2008)*
A company provides replacement organs for generous payment plans but you'd better not fall behind! Great movie! I really liked the sets, the cast, the music, the story, just everything. Granted the songs are not particularly catchy but they work well telling the story. 9/10

49. Cold Prey (2006)*
One of five friends out snowboarding breaks his leg so everyone must take shelter in a nearby deserted lodge. Of course, they are not alone. Outstanding example of cabin in the woods type film. Predictable to some extent, there are some nice touches that make it a bit different than most. Excellent execution all around with a couple serious jumps and one cringe-worthy scene for me. Satisfying and interesting finish. 8/10
50. Phase IV (1974)*
Two scientists in a small research facility in the Arizona desert study the ants in the surrounding area who have started to behave abnormally after an unspecified celestial event. Fascinating story, almost poetic, with amazing use of insect photography to help tell the story. The ants almost become a character. No huge special effects and little gore but the film is still chilling. Really wish there had been a commentary or other supplements. 9/10

51. Four Flies on Grey Velvet (1971)*
A musician accidentally kills a mysterious man who was following him and is then tormented by letters, phone calls and even photos of the deed. Slowly paced but always interesting with some very suspenseful scenes. Kills are shown from the perspective of the murderer which is clever but doesn't always work that well. Identity of killer not a huge surprise. 6/10
52. Seed of Chucky (2004)*
Chucky and Tiffany are back with a new addition to the family. Loved this! I laughed continuously for the first hour or so. Full of crude, stupid, bloody humor which is apparently just what I needed late on Friday night because it all worked perfectly. I was kind of lukewarm on the offspring until Glenda showed up. Also good to see John Waters in the cast. 8/10

53. Bram Stoker's Dracula (1974)* (aka Dan Curtis' Dracula)
Excellent adaptation of the novel covers several aspects not in the Lugosi version and a few extra touches thrown in by screenwriter Matheson work well. Although not as creepily atmospheric as the Lugosi version there is a strong sense of period and some fine acting. Jack Palance is imposing as Dracula but doesn't really have that many lines although he snarls well. Very pleased. 7/10
54. The Return of the Ape Man (1944)* (Sinister Cinema DVD)
Bela is a scientist studying suspended animation who is able to revive a prehistoric man who was frozen alive in a glacier. Trouble follows. Monogram/Sam Katzman cheapie but still entertaining. John Carradine has a good supporting role. Nice lab set. 5/10
55. The Black Cat (1934) (The Bela Lugosi Collection)
Due to a bus accident a young newlywed couple must stay at the home of a brilliant but dangerous architect. Perhaps the strangest and most disturbing of the classic Universal horror films. Directed and based on a story by Edgar G. Ulmer with modernistic sets every bit as creepy as the old castles found in other films. Karloff and Lugosi both have meaty roles and both are outstanding. 9/10
56. Sisters (1973)*
A reporter for a small newspaper sees a murder through an apartment window but when the police arrive there is no evidence of a crime. Suspenseful and well acted. The final, full revelation is very creepy. 7/10
57. Pharaoh's Curse (1957) (MGM Limited Edition Collection)
58. Voodoo Island (1957)*
Another actual double feature, this one torn straight from the drive-in screens of the 1950's. Both are basic B-movies. Curse is an interesting take on a mummy movie pretty well acted with good sets. Although Island has Boris Karloff in a good role, playing a debunking author, there are a lot of slow spots. The voodoo aspect is handled well and there are no less than three different kinds of people eating plants on the island which the ten-year old brain buried deep in my skull thought was pretty darned cool. 6/10 and 5/10 respectively.

59. Pontypool (2008)*
One snowy, cold morning a small town radio station in Canada begins getting reports of strange and violent events. Intense, very gripping, and a wonderfully clever new take on infections but it didn't entirely work for me. The ideas were thought provoking but not always convincing. 7/10
60. The Fields (2011)*
A boy whose parents are having marital problems is sent to live with his paternal grandparents for a while and their farm comes under attack by mysterious forces. Slow build does a good job establishing characters and once the tension begins it just keeps on mounting. The resolution is a little ambiguous but satisfying. 8/10
61. Invisible Invaders (1959)
Invaders from the moon animate corpses in order to conquer the world. A good B movie cast and a great bunker set keeps my inner ten-year old very happy. 6/10

62. Stir of Echoes (1999)*
After being hypnotized at a party a man begins to have visions and strange dreams. Excellent little ghost story set in modern Chicago, well paced with good acting and solid characters. Few real scares but a good mysterious atmosphere and a satisfying end. 7/10
63. The Howling (1981)
A TV anchor woman helps track down a serial killer but discovers something even more horrible. A different take on werewolves. The effects don't hold up a well and you might like and the overall look of the creatures doesn't grab me. I thought it was more suspenseful when I first saw it during its theatrical release but I did remember the ending so that may be why. 6/10

64. Spider Forest (2004)*
A TV reporter investigating a supposedly haunted forest discovers two dead bodies in an isolated cabin and is chased by a shadowy figure and seriously injured. Beautifully filmed, low key, complicated story told in a non-linear manner. Confusing at times it does seem to all hang together at the end but a second viewing is mandatory (but not right now of course). 6/10

65. The Wizard of Gore (1970)* (Herschell Gordon Lewis Box)
Montag, Master of Illusion, performs horrible, gory tricks on volunteers from his audience but of course no one is really injured ... for now. More Herschell Gordon Lewis fun. The gore is plentiful and really really icky although not always anatomically correct (how many livers does a person have anyway?). Acting is typical for low budgets but like many of HGL's pictures I found this one entertaining. The end is very lame however, leaving much unexplained. 5/10

66. The Forest (1980)*
Four backpackers run into a few ghosts and a hungry madman with a big knife. Low key slasher-in-the-woods movie has lots of background on the killer and some very bloodless kills. Lacks any suspense or tension. Not unlikeable but missing quite a lot. 4/10
67. Apollo 18 (2011)*
The last, unreported Apollo mission was for the DOD and was supposed to set up part of a missile defense system but much more was actually involved. Well done, but by now pretty standard, found footage film. Tension builds nicely but the finish is predictable. Still a good watch. 6/10

68. 100 Tears (2007)* Streaming Netflix
Two tabloid reporters investigate a relation between a series of recent grisly murders and others as far back a 20 years ago. Very very gory killer clown movie with the biggest damn cleaver I've ever seen. Female lead is quite good but the male lead, who is also the writer, should stick to writing. Surprisingly watchable although tedium starts setting in before the movie ends. 5/10
69. The Orphanage (2007)*
A couple's adopted son disappears and the mother will not let anyone or anything stop her from finding him. Excellent take on the classic ghost story, plays by the rules, has some chills and a wonderful finish. 9/10

70. Revenge in the House of Usher (1985)* (The Orloff Collection)
What happens when a mad scientist gets old, feeble, and senile but still has a beautiful young daughter who needs constant transfusions of fresh human blood? Slowly paced but kind of interesting although not much really happens. Lots of flashbacks from The Awful Dr. Orloff. Dreamlike quality enhanced by score, often just a string quartet. I kind of liked it. 6/10
71. The Mist (2007)*
Following a severe storm, a strange mist that hides something terrible appears. This is a great movie, basically a disaster movie with monsters. Tense and absorbing throughout but also very depressing at the end. Whole cast does a good job. 8/10
72. Primal Rage (1988)*
A baboon which has reacted poorly to synthetic protein experiments bites a student. Campus carnage follows. Much better than I expected. Standard characters, well paced, acceptable acting, solid makeup and effects, a great score (Simonetti) and a cool 80's vibe. Great fun. 7/10
73. Howling 2: Your Sister Is a Werewolf (1986)*
Picks up shortly after The Howling, an occult investigator is on the trail of Stirba, leader of the werewolves. Starts out OK but things begin to go awry when the scene shifts to Transylvania. The whole hidden society of monsters has never appealed to me and everything becomes just a bit too much over the top. Even Sybil Dannings' costumes look clunky and awkward although she is in one of the best scenes of the movie which is replayed over and over again during the credits. A chore to get through. 4/10
74. From a Whisper To a Scream (1987)*
Four tales of terror hosted by Vincent Price. All four stories are average with two slightly better than the others. Competently done time killer, nothing outstanding. 5/10
75. Hatchet (2007)*
A group of people trapped in the swamp after their boat sinks are pursued by a horrible monster. Goes in a few directions I don't care for but is a more than competent slasher with a variety of gory kills and some good touches of humor. End is unsatisfying. 6/10
76. Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama (1987)*
As part of a sorority initiation two pledges have to steal a bowling trophy but the one they get contains a nasty surprise. Silly fun with a couple of real laughs although most of the humor fall flat (The Imp). Always nice to see Buck Flowers do his thing and a good amount of nudity helped. Harmless and mildly entertaining but a good way to wrap up a Marathon of the Damned. 4/10

Eerie tale of a traveling showman who has complete control over his main attraction, a somnambulist. Disorientating sets and good acting, especially Werner Krauss as Caligari. 7/10
78. The Loreley's Grasp (1973)*
Officials are at a loss to explain a series of murders during which the victim's heart is torn out. Take a scaly green monster, mix with legends of the Rhinegold, season with a bit of creepy atmosphere and a solid scare or two and you'd get this entertaining mix. 6/10
79. The Car (1977)* hosted by Svengoolie VHS taped off TV
A large black car with supernatural powers terrorizes a desert community. Cast has lots of familiar faces but the film is pretty average. Watching with Sven helped. 5/10
80. Halloween (2007)*
Michael Myers for a new generation -- too bad I'm part of the old one. Lots of background on MM, maybe too much. Good cast though Laurie is kind of bland. Captures a bit of the magic in the pool sequence. Taken on its own a good basic slasher movie. 7/10
81. Herschell Gordon Lewis The Godfather of Gore (2010)*
Good overview of HGL's film career but very little about his life before and after. Lots of interviews with HGL. film critics/historians, and actors and crew members. Just about the right number of film clips. 6/10

83. Marsupials: The Howling III (1987)* (Timeless Media Group: Howling Trilogy)
Were-creatures are people too except they can turn into vicious, snarling beasts and summon huge hairy monsters from the spirit world and stuff like that. Certainly a different take on werewolves but kind of a mess of a movie that doesn't seem to know what it wants to be or even what story it wants to tell. An easier watch than 2 but not by much. 4/10

84. Howling IV: The Original Nightmare (1988)*
A writer on the verge of a breakdown and her husband rent an isolated cabin near a small town in the hills. Howling ensues. Finally a solidly watchable Howling sequel telling a fairly coherent story. The makeup is OK in some scenes, poor or minimal in others. There are a few nice touches but I really have no idea what the title is referring to. 5/10
85. Night Child (1975)*
A girl, traumatized after witnessing her mother burning to death, accompanies her father (who she is very fond of) to Italy where things take a turn for the worse. Slowly paced with suggestions of the supernatural, it is rather effective. No real chills but feelings of underlying menace and uncertainty. 6/10
86. Frankenstein (1931) (Frankenstein, The Legacy Collection)
I have mixed feelings about most of the Universal Frankenstein films. I get the whole sympathy for the monster deal but a savage rampage or two would certainly help things out. The first half of this film is very dark and moody, really excellent. Then things brighten up a lot but become darker and more uncertain with the reintroduction of the monster until the spectacular ending. 8/10
