Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 8th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/3
Hi all, I've been enjoying the last couple challenges and see how much enthusiasm you guys have for the October Horror challenge. I have to admit, horror is my least favorite genre which is funny since I love Halloween. I have to admit; I maybe own 2 or 3 actual horror films and one of those I only have because my college was used as a location... I blame my sister who thought it was funny to tell me to close my eyes during the scary bits and then told me to open them just as the worse part occurred--when I was five!
Is there a horror "lite" version of the challenge using just Halloween themed movies/tv shows? Would be OK to join in if I'm able doing a challenge like that on my own if there isn't? I kind of think it would be a challenge of itself to come up with a checklist sort of like JHCA13 did but I don't want to overstep my welcome or annoy anyone.
Thanks for answers--and I really don't mind if this wouldn't fit in but like the back and forth in the challenge discussions and wouldn't mind doing more like it.

There's a lot of anime horror, although you have to be careful, since some of those are quite gruesome. But there are plenty, like "Vampire Princess Miyu," that are much more atmospheric than horrific. The original VAMPIRE HUNTER D is a good one also.
Hong Kong ghost stories range from the romantic (ROUGE, PICTURE OF A NYMPH) to the comic (MR. VAMPIRE, ENCOUNTERS OF THE SPOOKY KIND) to effects-filled action extravaganzas (A CHINESE GHOST STORY, plus its sequels). I was so taken with the Hong Kong films I saw for last year's challenge that I went to another board and asked for suggestions for further viewing in terms of Chinese ghost stories and then made a list and went down to Chinatown and loaded up on more DVDs. Plus I bought English-language editions of the books which contain the original stories that were adapted for some of these films.
Some of the early Italian horror, like Mario Bava's films (BLACK SUNDAY, BLACK SABBATH, BARON BLOOD) and Dario Argento's early gialli, are more atmospheric and moody than bloody. Just stay away from the post-DAWN OF THE DEAD ones.
If you want to see a good "Horror Lite" list, check out my tally from last year's challenge (link below).

LJG765, I'd be happy to PM you a list of great G-rated horror films from the 30's - 60's.

The script is an afterthought and the person that wrote it also directed/produced/starred/etc, in it. The actors are all friends, none of whom can act and haven't finished their acting classes at junior college. If there is a big name attached to the film, it's in big print on the box and they only have a few lines on the film. Special effects consist of fake blood and awful cgi.
I'm also not saying that older stuff is the bee's knees. It's just that I prefer more physical special effects. You also get films taking place in a wider range of areas, like period pieces with decent costumes, and they also don't rely on shaky cam for attempts at bad scares.
If I can find a recent low budget horror that doesn't do the same thing that all the others do, I'm happy to give it a shot. Birdemic was a fun low budget film. It didn't take place in one location and different things happened. It wasn't just a small group of people starting out in a warehouse at night, walking around, getting haunted and dying, then the remaining couple leaving at the end.
LJG765, I'd also suggest Goosebumps and The Haunting Hour. If you have the Hub channel, they show on there. I imagine they're also on youtube.
If you can find a cheap copy on DVD, or don't mind VHS, check out My Teacher Ate My Homework! It's an evil doll movie but it's rated G and is pretty good, overall. I don't have issues watching it from year to year.

Can we add that back to the main checklist btw?

In addition to BobO'Link's suggestion, which I second, I would go with the Val Lewton horror films made at RKO in the early '40s (CAT PEOPLE, I WALKED WITH A ZOMBIE, ISLE OF THE DEAD, THE BODY SNATCHER, BEDLAM, et al). They're more suggestive than graphic yet are very effective. Look up contemporary reviews of them (James Agee was a champion of them) to see what I mean. I'd also suggest the Hammer horror films made in England from the late '50s to the early '70s, e.g. the Dracula and Frankenstein films with Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee. They have their moments but are not too bloody. One of them--DRACULA HAS RISEN FROM THE GRAVE--was even rated G! They're beautifully made period films and are well acted with strong casts of distinguished English supporting actors....
Some of the early Italian horror, like Mario Bava's films (BLACK SUNDAY, BLACK SABBATH, BARON BLOOD) and Dario Argento's early gialli, are more atmospheric and moody than bloody. Just stay away from the post-DAWN OF THE DEAD ones...

I should be ashamed for leaving all of those out as I tend to gravitate towards the films from those eras and prefer them over the more gorier films from the 70s onward. I'll leave as my excuse that I posted my suggestion early this morning right after I woke and had little time as I needed to get dressed and leave for work.
I'll post the lists I have (Uni and Hammer) when I get home this evening.

being that i threw in Raine Browns name into the mix I rec 100 tears as its on netflix que and one of my favorites from her along with some other straight to dvd releases Barricade and the beast. I guess im a fan of low budget horror eh.
suggestion on the actors list *i think criterion does this* why not make it "watch X amount of actors in the list"?

I thought it was decided it was unnecessary considering the checklist requires films from each decade.

^Definitely share those links and I'll include them in the original post.
Don't forget Angela Bettis was recently added.
Noted.
That's perfectly fine. Feel free to watch whatever you want to and create any personal checklists or just whatever and go about it your own way.
And I can't go without recommending Mad Monster Party?. That's essential Halloween viewing, IMO.
Oh God, I'm getting deja vu from the original discussion and feel a headache coming on, which sucks considering my doctor said I can't take any Tylenol a week before my surgery! But seriously, didn't we discuss this a couple years back and the general consensus was it was unnecessary and limited your viewing choices as well as what clckworang mentioned below? I know a major source of contention regarding past checklist items (Attack of, Day of, etc.) is that they require you to watch the same 'ol titles and, well, wouldn't adding this back accomplish the same?
Of course any feedback is welcome on this as well as terrycloth's suggestion and the "killed by" item. But again, none of this is time-sensitive and whether we do or don't include them doesn't really effect those that plan ahead.

I agree the pre-code rating is sufficiently covered by the decades checklist item.
I like the "killed by..." checklist item but the potential for spoilers might be a dealbreaker; maybe altering it to "attempted kill by... [i.e. chainsaw]" which implies only that a weapon is featured but not the outcome.
+1 Mad Monster Party blu-ray is coming out soon too.
Good luck on your surgery!

I did what you're contemplating two years ago, adding all of the retired ratings like GP and M. Each year I'm tempted to try to calculate the "checklist minimum", watching the fewest items but still satisfying the checklist.
Speaking of "checklist minimum", this title is not only a great watch, but satisfies tons of checklist items. I watch it almost every October now.
Welcome aboard LGJ765! As Chad said, the Challenges are pretty loose and you're welcome to tune it to your desired tastes. Someone can watch just NC-17 rated films, someone else can watch just Adaams Family episodes, and someone else can watch 300 films fully doing all the theme nights and checklist; and all three are equal 'winners' of the Challenge. The goal is just to have fun, but hopefully doing it in a somewhat communal way. The supplemental themes and checklist and subset films encourage group participation and discussion, but we all participate differently.
Speaking of your favorite theme of Halloween; I'm tempted to make my October all Halloween-themed. I have at least 30 films set on Halloween, plus most of the Simpsons Treehouse of Terror episodes. Hmmmm.

On the actors links on the checklist, I noticed not all of them included TV Movies. If you add it to John Agar, you get another 3 films. Thought I'd mention it.
Would the TV version of Halloween count as "Made for TV", since it's has scenes added to it and it's not just some version where violence is cut?

Although yeah most people don't do what I do with the checklist.

Great idea! Here are mine...
Overall Favorites:
Disappointments:
There's no way to describe how unexpectedly fun Wild Zero is. Even hearing good reviews I was initially skeptical but it made my favorites list last year too. These is in my pile for this year. How do you mess up a premise like Werewolf Vs The Vampire Woman?

You make it really really boring and you watch it at the end of the challenge. My advice would be to open with it, that way things can only get better.
Also there are 2 movies named Death Bed, if you are unfortunate enough to have the one distributed by Full Moon I suggest skipping that one altogether.

Buy the UK set - it's $45 cheaper, region-free, has no rating logos on the cover, and comes in a coffin!

Sorry to derail the thread, but I've never ordered a DVD/Blu-ray from another country. Obvious, being cheaper and having a cooler looking box makes the UK version appear to be the primo choice. But what would be the disadvantage of ordering the UK version over the US one?

Rather than list my bests and worsts (I've got a feeling there would a lot of overlap with other participants' lists), I took a look through my past entries and picked out a few titles that maybe weren't the greatest films but still deserved to be seen:
- Biozombie
- Deadly Friend
- I was a Teenage Zombie
- The Manster
- Vampire Girl vs. Frankenstein Girl
- Visiting Hours

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 8th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/3
Thanks guys for the suggestions and help. I looked at Mad Monster Party and it does look like a fun watch. I'll have to try to get a copy for October to watch.
As for the older films, I have watched several of the older ones like Dracula and Frankenstein-mainly the classics but they're not my favorites either. I'd say my taste runs more into the family/kid type Halloween horror films-the ones that aren't really horror. I do have Nosferatu and Bram Stoker's Dracula, but that about covers it. I do like Bruce Campbell movies-cheesy without being too scary. But mainly I watch more movies like ones from the Disney channel or Hocus Pocus or one of my favorites-Nightmare Before Christmas. (though, the question remains-is it a Halloween story about Christmas or a Christmas story about Halloween?)
But it sounds like I could focus on more Halloween type episodes-love the Simpsons Halloween of Terror epis and the Roseanne ones as well. I may do a checklist or not, but if I do one, it'll be one I came up with-I know I wouldn't get very far on the comprehensive one you've all come up with! Thanks again for all the suggestions!
