Rollin is a real mixed bag with me. I like some of his work but find others to be painfully boring. He does create a nice atmosphere though. Problem is so many of his films run together for me that weeks or months later I can't tell them apart.

Which one has the magic clock? That one was alright

I wonder how much of this is intentional versus lazy scripting or prop reuse. For example the vampires in Shiver of the Vampire show up in The Nude Vampire suggesting continuity. Also, one of the vampires in Lips of Blood wears the same see through purple robe and looks similar to one in Shiver of the Vampire. It could be he's just got a thing for two female vampires (Lips of Blood, Two Orphan Vampires, etc).

Fasciation, Lips of Blood, or Living Dead Girl (LDG is bloodier than most) are worthy starting points to explore Rollin. My least favorite is Two Orphan Vampires. A lot of the Rollin films are similar slow paced arthouse/fantasy movies that are cheaply made with themes repeating across films so not for everyone and not blind buy safe. The Grapes of Death (not on blu-ray yet, but on Netflix streaming) is fairly accessible. To me Redemption Films' press suggests Requiem for a Vampire, which I haven't seen yet and features two girls inexplicably dressed as clowns fleeing vampires, is a highlight of his work.

Haha... will you be counting by nipple or by actress? I'm curious to see if you end up on an even number or if there'll be a lot of strange one tit scenarios.
Probably by nipple but I may have an honorable mention for great side boob. But not sure if I want to count per scene or per actress, probably better per actress...

Also it makes me kind of afraid to watch Society....

Nope. Even if it were, the way the vents are positioned, they can't hit it. There's also a ceiling fan in the room and even when it's on, it doesn't move them.

I liked most of them, at least the ones from the 70s, but I also couldn't tell you what any of them were about without looking them up. I bought a couple that I knew I liked and then got 4 more through a decent deal. They were cheap enough for me to gamble on.

I also have one of his more recent films in a Rareflix box set that I don't have high hopes for. I'm worried it's going to be similar to Jess Franco's more recent stuff with extremely low budgets.

If you got a good deal on the Rollin titles I'd say they're worth a gamble on. I'm sure they resell well if you don't like them.

A word of warning to anyone wanting to dig into Rollin's filmography: Stay far far away from Zombie Lake. Seriously, if you think you're far enough away just take another step back. Good lord what a POS.

I remember renting that as part of a 'Rent 2, Get 2 Free' at my old local video store.

Yeah, he's definitely an acquired taste. But I love what I've seen thus far of his work. He's one of the few directors that I can watch and appreciate as simply "art." I love the atmosphere, the dream logic, and how beautiful everything looks. I still remember being in the editing bay finishing up my graduation film and hearing about his passing. It hit me a little hard since I'd count him as one of my influences.

And I picked them all up at Kino's webstore for about $162 in a bundle which I think comes out a little cheaper than if you were to pick them up separately.

Does anyone know if Kino plans on releasing more of Rollin's stuff? There's none announced at the moment and it seems that they're focused on the new acquisitions like the Bava stuff right now. I'd just like to know what to wait for and what to look around elsewhere for. I'd also love it if Synapse released a blu of Grapes of Death.

There is a rumor that Redemption/Kino will release Grapes of Death (GoD) next year. Mysteriously GoD is avaliable in high definition on Netflix streaming with a cover image on Netflix that matches the Kino line.

Kino also has some interesting Franco stuff around the bend, I wish Virgin Among the Living Dead (VaLD) came out in time for the horror challenge (I've always wanted to see VaLD). Exorcism and Female Vampire are coming on October 16th, I am planning on a blind buy.

I'm not sure how much more Rollin stuff remains but I would like to see Fiancee of Dracula (FoD) get a hi-def bump (in my opinion FoD salvaged late Rollin after the Two Orphan Vampires bungle) but Fiancee of Dracula was previously with Shriek Show so no telling where the rights are. Although FoD is hardly a lost gem.

With the Kino line I'm also looking forward to checking out Ganja and Hess.

Too bad there is not easily avaliable US release currently; the UK is spoiled with vendors like Second Sight.

I remember renting Zombie lake for .99c at my local video store... we used to rent it a lot due to the abundance of nudity in the beginning

Wow, had no idea that one was going so high. Although it does remind me, each year around this time I am really tempted to sell Raw Head Rex & Fright Night 2

I read SethDLH's review of Father's Day on Celluloid Terror and still am not sure it's worth the price. ...but Life and Death of a Porno Gang will be mine.

Do it! You can download a higher quality torrent with correct aspect ratio of Fright Night 2 and given the omission of an in print proper release by rights owners I can't say anyone would blame you. ...If you do decide to sell let me know.

I'm sure, especially with the UK blu-ray release, that a US upgrade of Society will come soon. Sell while you can. Myself I'm sitting on Savage Streets with a similar story.

Honestly I don't think I would have been as excited with Father's Day had I spent upwards of $25 on it. I got it from a marketplace seller and paid about $9 out of pocket after applying some credit. It was fun, and for $9 totally worth it but triple that price and I have to say that it would have factored in to my enjoyment haha. I wasn't a fan of the film of Porno Gang, but the disc is great. The film will divide it's audience but the disc is an all around winner. Thanks for the read!

On a challenge related note, I picked up the first prize for my blog's sponsorship. Until I finish up with getting whatever prizes I get it'll remain a secret.

Just found out that Hammer Films' Youtube page has a few movies streaming there also!

For right now, it looks like they only have Dick Barton: Special Agent, The Man in Black, Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter, The Quartermass Xperiment and the Last Page, but hopefully they will get more by October.

Hopefully, they'll also make them available for viewers in the United States, since we're currently locked out from viewing them.

While I'm on the subject...
...I just got in my fourth incorrect item from GoHastings. It was supposed to be the Special Edition of Elton John's Goodbye Yellow Brick Road CD, but I got in the one-disc version case with only a "Disc One" inside. So, instead of getting the complete album plus a bonus CD, I got half of the original album.

And yet, I still order from them because their prices on used items are SO good.

I feel sure that they'll make this mistake right, as they've done the previous three times.

But getting back on track for this thread, here's a link to over 60 pages of their used horror movies, priced from lowest to highest. You should be able to find at least a few movies you'd like to watch for the challenge--I just placed an order for five.

And no, the only affiliation that I have with GoHastings is as a customer.

Did anyone ever get appointed fill in, while Chad is recuperating? I think I remember him asking for someone to help set up the 31 Film Subset... If no one wants it, I can fill in. My only concern is not making it look cool enough as Chad does.

I'd love for Grapes of Death to come out. I always kicked my heels about picking up the Synapse disc, and then I figured I'd wait for the blu. I've been wanting to see it forever. I have the Shriek Show Fiancee of Dracula but it went into storage before I could watch it. I'd be fine if they don't release that one, though it was in the same box as Two Orphan Vampires and Kino released that so who knows. I'd love to see Lost in New York as that's been intriguing me for years and I haven't gotten around to picking up the R2.

I'm definitely getting the two Franco titles as I don't think I own those in any form yet. I have all of the Pete Walker and Bava titles announced so far on SD so I should be good without those, but the allure of having them on blu is tempting...

I offered too but am not sure anyone heard back or was appointed. My understanding was that Chad expected to be back in the game by then but was just seeking a contingency. Fingers crossed.

That's my problem too, especially the Bava films on blu-ray... maybe it's a good thing I missed out on the Pete Walker DVD set (so I can justify spending even more on improved picture quality). Importcds.com is my friend.

Ah, my favorite challenge and the only one where I never fall off by mid way. I can always watch more horror.

We'll have some good prizes for this one guys.

Boobs are easier. With kill count, you have to figure out what you're going to count(on-screen, off-screen, between films that are referenced in later films, what if it's not clear a person died, what if the person dies and comes back to life, either as a zombie or through CPR).

So, just tried this, and strangely, only some movies work in the US.

It looks like Dick Barton: Special Agent, The Man in Black, and the Last Page work, but not any others.

A kill count might be more consistent with the horror nature of the challenge. Ironically I wonder if counting kills would be less offensive to sensitive family members than boobs. Maybe I'm jaded from watching too may horror movies but kill counts seems more socially acceptable than anything sexual. You said it's not too late to order counters so go for the gusto with both, stake your claim as the kill & boob stat guy!

I wonder which character has been "killed" the most in horror movie(s). My guess is the Friday the 13th guy. I imagine some sort of comical extreme (i.e. South Park Kenny). With some outfits the same could be said about uncertain boobage.
