Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 8th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/3
This seems to be the only reason I still frequent DVDtalk. I'm in but doubt I am going to get anywhere close to the neck and neck horror fight for #1 last year but damned if I don't reach 100 again. My goal in this is always do over 80% flicks I've never seen before.
Kicking things off this year Chillerama (2011)! Hope to add more discussion this year.

By my count, I've got 30 new horror Blu-rays arriving between now and the end of October, so I should be in good shape.

I'm really hoping some good horror BD sales show up soon. And hopefully the Universal Monsters set will drop to a price I can afford before the end of the challenge!

I'm getting anxious for October but I'll get a lil taste of a horror marathon on Saturday night. There's a theater in Long Island that every year, has a 5 movie horror marathon on the last Saturday of August. They also show a double feature every Saturday night for the entire summer. I got to see The Omen and Rosemary's Baby a few weeks ago for one of them. The first 4 movies of the marathon are announced a month in advance and the last film isn't revealed until the moment they start playing it. They're going with an international theme this year and are showing...
1. The Descent (UK)
2. Ringu (Japan)
3. Martyrs (France)
4. REC (Spain)
5 ??? (US)
The Descent is one of my all-time faves and I'm excited to be able to see it on the big screen. I have never seen Ringu or Martyrs but have wanted to see both for a while now, so I'm looking forward to those too. Then there's always the excitement and anticipation for the surprise finale. I'll report back on the final movie after the marathon. Here's a link to the site if anyone's interested...

As long as we're discussing theater options: for those in the Boston area, this is The Coolidge's weekend midnight movie schedule for October:
The Funhouse
V/H/S
Lifeforce
TCM 2
Poltergeist
Plus, a 12-hour marathon on the night of the 27th, including The Exorcist and The Thing.

Rifftrax is doing a live show of Birdemic on the 25th.
Not at all thrilled that Lina Romay is a checklist item. Most of her stuff is awful because it's directed by Jess Franco. fake edit: Looks like Lina's been beaten by Raine Brown. She looks like she's just been in a bunch of crappy DTV films. I don't even think I own any of them, unlike the other actors/actresses, of which I own most, if not all, of their horror films. At least Lina has a couple titles that are somewhat above average.

The Frankenstein/Bride of Frankenstein double feature that is being presented by Fathom on October 24 seems to be a digital presentation

Buy the UK set - it's $45 cheaper, region-free, has no rating logos on the cover, and comes in a coffin!
Thank you!

But point taken, I could always add an "-or-" actor with a more limited filmography from the checklist suggestions next to each.

I know it's very Franco-centric, but IMDB lists 47 horror credits to her name. Gotta be at least one thing worth watching there, right? Did I mention she died this year? And Raine Brown, man! Raine Brown!

There's a couple Raine Brown films available for streaming on Netflix, so I guess that's something. The reviews don't make it seem anything better than bottom barrel DTV but this expands my horizons.

I started looking at Lina again. I didn't realize Franco made Ilsa, since it's somewhat coherent. I have a few discs with her in my unwatched pile, so it's not that bad.

Although, since not everyone is especially fond of the low-budget indie DTV titles, I included Angela Bettis next to Raine Brown.

Here's the sponsor news I've been promising...
First, I'd like to officially welcome 2 more sponsors to the pack:
Back for a 2nd year and quick on the ball as always, Synapse.

And something a little different than the usual studio, distributor or company:

SethDLH is gonna be donating some prizes in conjunction with his blog, Celluloid Terror.
I'll get those up on the first page soon.
And since thing's have been a little different than usual this year, I never got a chance to properly welcome our current sponsors...
The ever dependable Hamilton Book:

And of course the man responsible, GoldenWheels.
A new sponsor with us for the first time, Mondo Macabro:

And another first-timer, Breaking Glass Pictures:

Welcome all! You are very much appreciated.
And a big thanks as always to John Sinnott!
Already we've got more sponsors than ever, but let's just say there's a very high probability more are coming. The fact is I still haven't contacted them all and there's a few I'm currently awaiting a response from. As far as the prizes are concerned and what they are, well, I'm still working on that. Could be awhile, therefore I won't throw out any specific dates. Although it's a safe bet most before the challenge starts; this is only August, after all.

Yikes! That might be the worst picture I've ever seen of Angela Bettis. Ordinarily, I could take her or leave her, but that pic is getting left waaaaaaaaaaaay the fuck behind.

Thanks to SethDHL and his blog for donating, that's cool of him.
Count me in with the Lina Romay crowd; I've been meaning to check out more Franco. Angela Bettis might not be sexy but many of her roles are intense.

Franco is such a mixed bag, some of his work is cheesy fun, some is actually good and a lot is just a mess. lI'll probably use Lina Romay for that checklist item, more than likely with the Orloff films that I've never seen. As for Bettis she's a good actress, she can be weirdly attractive at times, but that picture is just awful. I can't believe she's almost 40.

I flirted with it last year but this year I'm going to give it a shot...a combined checklist using all the current and former checklist items. It totals 168 items...chance of me completing it...slim.

being that i threw in Raine Browns name into the mix I rec 100 tears as its on netflix que and one of my favorites from her along with some other straight to dvd releases Barricade and the beast. I guess im a fan of low budget horror eh.
suggestion on the actors list *i think criterion does this* why not make it "watch X amount of actors in the list"?

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 8th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/3
Hi all, I've been enjoying the last couple challenges and see how much enthusiasm you guys have for the October Horror challenge. I have to admit, horror is my least favorite genre which is funny since I love Halloween. I have to admit; I maybe own 2 or 3 actual horror films and one of those I only have because my college was used as a location... I blame my sister who thought it was funny to tell me to close my eyes during the scary bits and then told me to open them just as the worse part occurred--when I was five!
Is there a horror "lite" version of the challenge using just Halloween themed movies/tv shows? Would be OK to join in if I'm able doing a challenge like that on my own if there isn't? I kind of think it would be a challenge of itself to come up with a checklist sort of like JHCA13 did but I don't want to overstep my welcome or annoy anyone.
Thanks for answers--and I really don't mind if this wouldn't fit in but like the back and forth in the challenge discussions and wouldn't mind doing more like it.

^I'd highly recommend going with the classic Universal Horror titles from the 30s to 50s as a good starting point. More gothic horror and less gore. Many should be available through your library or streaming services.
I have a list of titles Uni released over the years and can repost it if anyone is interested.
