Re: a dingo ate my baby
So I'm suddenly coming to the realization that I went about the choosing of the subset list wrong. Since we started syncing 100% with theme nights, well, its made things a little bit of a pain in the ass to assemble the list. The fact is we've currently got plenty of picks (aside from still needing 4 more people to get a full 31), but they either don't fit under any theme night entries or several are repeats of the same themes. But there's a method that's so simple and effective I can't believe it hasn't been implemented - each person is assigned their own theme nights day. In other words, if I get chosen for Supernatural (10/26) I'm responsible for that day's subset pick, I choose "The Innkeepers" and there you go. Simple, right?
So, here's what I'm gonna do:
The subset list is partially complete and for those of you I was able to put on the list you won't be bothered any further. However, for those of you that your picks didn't sync up and I wasn't able to include, I'm going to go about it the only fair way I know possible and that's randomly assign you a day. I know people would probably prefer being able to pick their day, but since we're in a crunch I'm gonna do it this way. Next year will be different. So I'll plug in your name alongside the unused theme night days into random.org and whatever day it assigns you you're responsible for that day's subset pick. And then you get back to me as soon as possible with your picks.
Just give me awhile to work on the subset list some more and make sure I've included as many people as I can.

I do too!
I love how we (mainly Chad but occasionally the rest of you) often come up with great new ideas to refine our little event. The Challenge was great in 2005, but it just keeps getting better and better.
Two quick comments/suggestions on this new feature. One, I hope people are open to suggestions on their theme. If I'm some year given a theme that I'm a little inexperienced with, I'll be asking for advice. Two, it might be neat to consider the checklist categories when making your choices, aiming to include one or more of the specific ones like actor/composer/etc.

I just ordered the Puppet Master blu-ray box set and Killjoy 4 DVD. I was planning on waiting for a sale but I have a bunch of store credit, they both came out yesterday and the blu-ray upgrade looks really good, and I also planned on using Part 3 in my checklist. Temptation got the better of me.

I'm hoping to have that info ready by tonight.
Not my idea; SethDLH mentioned doing this 2 days ago. And it took me about that long to realize that in my medicine-filled haze. But yeah, it's definitely amazing to see how this challenge has progressed over the years.

Here's a link to it on the Walmart website. Curious that it's up for pre-order there, yet it's already in my store:

Actually, now that I think about it, I could be wrong on that price. It might have been $7.50.
As always, your mileage may vary.

Are the Killjoy films worthy? There's a budget Echo Bridge release with Killjoy 1-3 and 3 Scarecrow films at Fry's for $5.99 but I wasn't sure about them.
For $6 though, I'd call it one of those things where it's cheaper to buy than rent and I'd go for it.

I haven't seen them yet but everything I've heard, even from people at Full Moon, was that the first one sucked and then it got good with part 2 and on. Difference between the first and the rest was the first was strictly a horror film and then they added some funny to the rest of the series. Sounds like what they did with the Gingerdead Man series, of which I have actually seen.

Does anybody know how long Criterion leaves non-Plus streaming titles on Hulu? You can watch I Was a Teenage Zombie now, but I don't know how long they'll keep it online. I presume it'll still be available through the month of October. If not, I've still got my well-worn ex-rental VHS tape.
Is it just me, or are retailers cutting back on Halloween merchandise compared to last year?

Also, I'm sure people would be open to giving suggestions, as Trevor brought up.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 8th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/3
Thanks for the advice! I will try not to watch the same type of movie back to back, with the exception of if it's on the same disc. This might make me sound lazy, but I figure it will put less stress on my player with there not being so much opening/closing of the disc tray.
I've been trying to complete my Hammer horror collection and the only thing that's been holding me back is the pricing on Horror Of Frankenstein and the only decent prices for Scars Of Dracula and Blood From The Mummy's Tomb being MOD releases. Well finally, FINALLY I managed to buy Horror Of Frankenstein for a decent price. This made me pretty happy, and I finally decided to just cave in and order the MOD releases of Scars Of Dracula and Blood From The Mummy's Tomb. I'd have preferred the original releases, but I'm finally done tracking them down. Now I can watch them all in order for the challenge.
I also caved in on those 6 film and 8 film packs Lionsgate released exclusively at Walmart (now with a wide release). They cost me more than $5, but I couldn't find them at the 2 Walmarts I went to and I'm tired of taking the chance that they'll have them.
Anyone else buying anything for the challenge? I'm strongly considering buying just one more thing for it, Mad Monster Party. Is it worth it for $9, and has Rankin/Bass made any other Halloween themed movies? I was only familiar with their Christmas movies before reading about it here.

Deep Discount is having a pretty good sale at the moment. Quite a few titles under $5.

Alright, nothing personal but here's that list of those I couldn't find a spot on the subset list with your newly assigned theme so you can make a new pick within that category:
shellebelle ----> The Last Man on Earth is Not Alone - Cinema Inspired By Richard Matheson
indiephantom ----> Angst-Ridden with Blemishes Hidden - Teen Screams
Trevor ----> Movies That Mess With Your Head - "Exploding Head" Horror
edwardnortonfan ----> Buried Alive and Itching to Survive - Subterranean Horror
Again, don't forget to avoid repeating previous subset titles:
If you wanna check for Netflix Streaming titles ...Instant Watcher.
_______________________________________________________
And here's the 3 remaining themes leftover because we still need 3 more people for the subset list:
Viking Decapitation Via Windmill - NetherHorror Vs. Norwegian Horror
When Metal Meets Flesh - Killer Robots / Evil Technology Claimed.
The Ultimate Pointless Cash Grab Blood Feud! - Remakes Vs. Sequels Claimed.
The Doctor is In ...sane - Medical Horrors
On the Highway to Hell - Road Terrors
I'll even let you choose your theme ...first come, first serve obviously.
_______________________________________________________
And finally, here's a very stripped down version of the subset list so far:
I always try to include your first pick, but if one was streaming on Netflix I usually give priority to that one.
Despite mentioning this 50 times, I'm on pain meds with occasionally bouts of fever that can make concentration difficult, which means mistakes could have been made. That being said, if you feel one of your original picks should have been included, you don't like your current chosen one, that you feel a title doesn't belong in a category or just whatever let me know.

Noroi was for the Asian buffet theme; for Apartment Horror, I suggested 2LDK. Noroi probably doesn't fit into the Apartment Horror theme easily, but I've never seen it.
If somebody's got a better Apartment Horror pick, you could give it to them and put my suggestion of The Night Strangler in for Richard Matheson night.

Wouldn't my original picks of The Giant Claw/Them! qualify for rubber suit movies?
Hmm 'Urban Horror'...so is this horror that happens in "the big city", or just "the hood"? For example, would some giant critter rampaging through downtown count, or does it have to be more along the lines of Blacula? According to this link, urban horror seems to mean monster/killer-in-the-ghetto. Clarification?
