March 31
01. Eat My Dust (1976)* (Roger Corman's Cult Classics The Ron Howard Action Pack)
A sheriff's son "borrows" a top rated stock car to impress a girl. Mayhem follows. A great, fun movie. Basically two long car chases separated by a slow romantic interlude. Car stunts are well done and the humor works very well. The pacing is almost perfect and there is a great soundtrack by David Grisman. Highly recommended.
02. Firecracker (1981)* (Roger Corman's Cult Classics Lethal Ladies Collection)
A martial arts instructor goes to the Philippines looking for her missing sister and gets involved with death fights and a drug smuggling ring. An OK martial arts picture with some pretty well done fight scenes including a couple instances of topless boob-fu. Seems to drag just a little in spots though.
03. TNT Jackson (1974)* (Roger Corman's Cult Classics Lethal Ladies Collection)
A tough street fighter goes to Hong Kong looking for her missing brother and gets involved with a drug smuggling ring. Firecracker, with the same director and writer, borrowed heavily from this film but does it all much better. I was never convinced that star Jeanne Bell was ever doing any of the fighting thanks to liberal use of undercranking and obvious stunt person substitution. Interesting footage of a Chinese festival helps as does a slightly better boob-fu scene but overall Firecracker is just a better movie.
04. Too Hot to Handle (1977)* (Roger Corman's Cult Classics Lethal Ladies Collection)
A professional assassin begins having an affair with the Chief of Detectives of the Manilla police force who is investigating her crimes. Good movie with some interesting hits. Star Cheri Caffaro is very appealing even if her acting range is limited. Still a nice chemistry develops between her and the detective.
05. Grand Theft Auto (1976)* (Roger Corman's Cult Classics The Ron Howard Action Pack)
Two teenagers want to get married but the bride's parents object. She "borrows" her father's Rolls Royce and the two head for Vegas to get married. Mayhem follows. Not quite as "pure" as Eat My Dust but still plenty of car chase action. I got fewer laughs out of this one and found some things, like the radio announcer in the helicopter, distracting and thought they just slowed the movie down too much. Still, good fun. Recommended for auto chase fans.
06. Fighting Mad (1976)* (Action-Packed Double Feature)
Large corporation uses terrorist tactics to convince holdouts to sell their land for a development project. One farmer with anger management issues fights back but almost sacrifices everything he holds dear. Not an original plot but pretty well done. I think more backstory about the main characters would have increased involvement. Movie seems to promise things that it never quite delivers.

April 01
07. Mondo Cane (1962)*
Stories about strange practices from around the world, often compared and contrasted with similar activities in the USA or Western culture. Interesting but animal lovers be warned there are several sequences of animal abuse or killing which many will find offensive.

April 02
08. Dixie Dynamite (1976)*
Two sisters resort to guerrilla warfare after losing their house to a rich moonshiner who was also indirectly responsible for the death of their father. Not action packed, there are some good explosions and a few touches of humor. Very watchable but it never really grabbed me. Kind of a strange mix of lightheartedness and cold blooded murder.

April 03
The first of three Bill Rebane double features I'm planning for this challenge.
09. The Alpha Incident (1977) (Mill Creek Chilling Classics 50 Movie Pack Disk 8)
Five people are quarantined in a remote train station after being exposed to a potentially dangerous substance from Mars. The SF elements are minor as most of the emphasis is on the character interactions as tensions increase. Similar to some Twilight Zone stories where a small number of people area thrown together in a restricted area. Unfortunately the material here is just stretched too thin for a full length movie. Still the acting has its moments and much of the film is interesting.
10. The Capture of Bigfoot (1979) (Retromedia Bigfoot Terror)
A local businessman sends trappers out to capture a legendary creature that he has been hunting for years. Not bad. Compared to The Alpha Incident this Bill Rebane movie has more action, stunts, and special effects. Several of the actors, including the star, were in the previous film but in general the acting here is not as well done. Richard Kennedy playing the businessman has a few wonderfully maniacal moments but the not so comic sheriff just slows things down. I've seen better and worse creature costumes but this one gets the job done. Worthwhile if you're in the mood for some Bigfoot cheese.

April 04
11. Super Troopers (2001)*
A Highway Patrol station is in danger of being closed due to budget cuts and being overshadowed by the local police so the troopers plan a big drug bust to impress the governor. Surprisingly funny in a silly, stupid kind of way. Some scenes (the bear) are outright hilarious and most are good for at least a chuckle. Maybe just a little bit too long but fun overall. Recommended if you're in a goofy mood.

April 05
12. Corman's World Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel (2011)*
Good tribute to Roger Corman includes overview of his film career with lots of clips and interviews with some of the people he has worked with, including his wife and brother. When I heard him speak one year at Comic Con International I found him a be a quiet, pleasant and intelligent person. This didn't change that but it did bring out other aspects of his personality along with info on his film making techniques. Highly recommended.
13. Rock 'n' Roll High School (1979)
A teenage girl loves rock and roll, especially The Ramones, and manages to not only see them in concert but bring them to her high school as well after she gets into big trouble with the new principal. Possibly the greatest high school fantasy movie ever. Its been quite a few decades since I was in high school but I was totally pumped up by the time the credits rolled. Recommended.

April 06
14. Meridian (1990)* (The Charles Band DVD Collection Vol. 1)
An heiress returns to her ancestral home and finds both terror and love. Basically a slow moving supernatural romance it took me a while to get involved with the story but I once I did it was enjoyable although nothing groundbreaking. A couple of almost surprise plot twists helped.
15. The Killer Eye (1999)*
During an experiment to see into the 8th dimension, a creature embeds itself into a human eye, causes the eye to grow to an enormous size, and starts feeling up women with its attached optic nerve. No really. Things are getting serious now. This is by far the worst movie I've watched so far for this challenge. Despite the fact it was clearly meant to be a comedy, the plot is still stupid, the acting is mostly sub-par, and it seems way too long at 72 minutes. There is plentiful nudity but who knew optic nerve sex could be so boring! Not recommended.
16. Mutant Hunt (1987)*
Cyborgs given a version of a common street drug turn into lust crazed killers. Mercenary Riker and his crew must hunt them down in order to rescue an old acquaintance. The acting never rises above barely adequate. There are a couple of neat ideas but there is nothing at all outstanding about this movie. Watchable but probably best around 2 AM.
17. Necropolis (1987)*
A witch returns after 300 years seeking the reincarnation of one of her former victims. Not bad. The acting is pretty low level and the overall story is far from original but there are some nice touches, including a coherent story, and the production values are better than most of the stuff I've watched lately. A little nudity, a touch of gore, cool zombies = watchable.

April 07
18. SS Experiment Love Camp (1976)* (SS Hell Pack Triple Feature)
In a Nazi prison camp for political prisoners, a German soldier falls in love with one of the prisoners with disastrous results. Intense, with lots of nudity, torture, medical experiments, breeding experiments, grisly operations, and general brutality. The accumulative effect of all this is very disturbing. There are some just jaw-dropping plot turns. Actually a pretty well done movie for what it is.
19. Ninja vs Shaolin Guards (1984)* (Tai Seng Ninja Six - 6 DVD Set)
Four monks flee Shaolin Temple with a secret book after the head monk is killed by a traitor. Pretty much wall to wall fighting but changing locations and different weapons used by various pursuers keep things interesting and fun. Recommended for a Saturday afternoon when you just want to turn off your brain.
20. Shaolin Chamber of Death (1976)* R2 DVD
Birthday Boy Jackie Chan plays a mute student at Shaolin Temple who receives unconventional training from several different sources. Not all fighting, there are lots of training sequences, especially in the first half but all are well done. Very old school. There's also a decent and understandable plot. Jackie makes an appealing hero. A bit long but worth seeing.
21. Django Shoots First (1966)* aka Django spara per primo
Django attempts to collect money and property owned by his newly deceased father. His father's old business partner has other ideas. OK, but the drama/action ration is too high for my taste. There is some clever plotting and Django is a genial hero most of the time but the whole movie lacks much of an edge.

April 08
22. Molemen Against the Son of Hercules (1961)* (Retromedia Hercules Collection)
Maciste, one of the sons of Hercules, battles the people of an underground civilization who are killed by exposure to sunlight and are ruled by a beautiful but evil queen. Good story ideas and interesting sets make this very watchable. Minimal amount of boring court intrigue and some good feats of strength also help.
23. War Goddess (1973)* (Retromedia War God's Collection)
The new Queen of the Amazons struggles to bring reforms to her people while falling in love with the leader of the Greeks. Mashup of romantic comedy and sword & sandal. Despite a good amount of nudity, fantastic naked female wrestling, and some OK battle scenes this one was tough for me to get through. The acting/dubbing was particularly poor especially the Queen and there were just too many silly or stupid aspects to the plot.
24. Undefeatable (1993)*
A death match fighter snaps and begins torturing and killing women who resemble his estranged wife. A cop, a street fighter, and a psychiatrist try to track him down. Not anywhere near a good movie, the mix of martial arts and suspense make this an easy watch. Some of the fights are well done while others contain much silliness. The acting ranges from poor to over the top with few exceptions. Still, highly recommended because its so much fun.
25. Female Trouble (1974)*
The story of a teenage rebel who becomes an unwed mother and then a crime model after being disfigured. Some movies cannot be easily describe in a line or two and this John Waters film is one of them. It does however contain the essence of low budget independent film making. I enjoyed it and it must be seen to be believed.

April 09
26. Teenage Caveman (2002)*
In a post apocalyptic world, a group of teenagers leave their cave dwelling community after one of them kills the dictatorial leader. They come upon an ancient city and find both wonders and terror. As mentioned in the discussion, this move hits many exploitation bases including teenagers, nudity, soft core sex scenes, drugs, poor acting both bland and over the top and a monster! Not good but I had fun watching it.

April 10
27. Kill Them All and Come Back Alone (1968)*
Birthday Boy Chuck Connors leads a group of misfits hired by the Confederates to steal one million dollars in Union gold. Top notch spaghetti western - lots of sweat and grit, action, and betrayals. Very good directing and camerawork as well. I'd only known Connors from his TV work, mainly The Rifleman, and always considered him kind of a softy. He's hard as nails here with a dangerous smile and a profile that looks like it was chiseled from stone. Great stuff. Highly recommended.
The evening ended with another Bill Rebane double feature!
28. The Demons of Ludlow (1983)* (Mill Creek Chilling Classics 50 Movie Pack Disk 8)
The town of Ludlow is celebrating its bicentennial and receives a piano from the family of its founder. Strange and horrible things begin to happen whenever the piano is played. Moderately well done ghost/revenge from the past story. Acting is often adequate, there is some good building of tension, and the effects are OK for a low budget film. Still something is lacking.
29. The Cold (1984)* aka The Game (Mill Creek Chilling Classics 50 Movie Pack Disk 8)
Nine people gather at an isolated island lodge to participate in a game concocted by three bored millionaires with the winner to get one million dollars. Clever idea and fairly well executed. Acting is still somewhat below par but seems to matter less here. Nice effects. The ending is too ambiguous for my taste and leaves too much unresolved. Probably Rebane's most accomplished film so far. Recommended just for the ride.

April 11
30. Turkish Star Wars (1982)* aka The Man Who Saves the World Streaming Google
Two space pilots have to save the Earth from a wizard who is trying to gain ultimate power. Uses space battle scenes from Star Wars Episode IV:A New Hope at the beginning and end and also soundtrack clips from 5 or 6 other films including Raiders of the Lost Ark. The majority of the movie is essentially a very bad kung-fu movie with very very bad kung-fu and a lot of trampoline work. There is even a hilarious training sequence with rocks of all sizes. Its all worthwhile though because the last seven minutes or so is some of the most insane shit ever put on film.
31. Emanuelle in America (1977)*
Newshound Emanuelle pursues several stories including a millionaire with a harem, a Viennese count who deals in forged art, a island resort that fulfills women's fantasies, and a snuff film gang. Laura Gemser is really a lovely woman but her one note acting got on my nerves after a while. The real surprise here is that after about 40 minutes of typical soft core groping we suddenly get about a half hour of very explicit sex. The way this was structured, our heroine going from room to room on the island resort photographing everything, makes me think director D'Amato just might have edited these scenes in from other movies. Once this is over its back to soft core except for one very disturbing scene at the snuff film hideout.

April 12
32. Reform School Girl (1957)* Streaming amctv
A 17 year old girl is sent to reform school after refusing to identify a car thief who ran down an old fool while the girl was with him in the stolen car. Kind of a JD and women in prison mash up. Pretty good for an AIP pic. Edd 'Kookie' Byrnes plays the car thief and Sally Kellerman has a small role as one of the (taller) girls. I wouldn't have recognized here but happened to notice her name last in the credits so I was on the lookout. Also features B-movie actress Yvette Vickers. A very easy watch.
33. Teenage Devil Dolls (1955)* VHS part of Rhino's Teenage Theater series
Teenager Cassandra, product of a broken home, is introduced to pot by the local motorcycle gang. This of course leads to more drugs, sleaze, and ever increasing criminal activities. There is no dialog, the story is told through narration (by the main police character) and sound effects which gives a documentary feel enhanced by the crawl at the end citing a bunch of drug use statistics from 1952. Very low budget but short and kind of interesting.
34. High School Big Shot (1959)*
The best looking girl in the school uses her charms to manipulate both the brainiest and the brawniest guys in her class. Soon drops its high school premise and shows its true colors as a grim, sleazy caper drama and a pretty well done one at that. Interesting writing, usually solid acting, and a very dark atmosphere. Recommended.

April 13
35. Young and Wild (1958)* Streaming Netflix
Three tough punks steal a car, terrorize a nice young couple, and run down a foolish old woman. They later threaten the nice young couple so they won't identify the punks for the police. Good movie. Action and serial director William Witney keeps things moving and Gene Evans gives a solid performance as a police sergeant. Scott Marlow as leader of the punks also does a good job.
36. Teenage Gang Debs (1966)*
A new beauty in the neighborhood, Terry, uses her charms to become the power behind the leader in the street gang, The Rebels. This movie has cat-fights, knife-fights, and big scale gang rumbles (the latter filmed in early shaky cam which I found annoying) and absolutely no likeable characters at all which leads to a dark, slightly depressing feeling. Still its tough to not like this sleazy rise and fall story.
37. Teen-Age Strangler (1964)*
Teenage girls are being strangled with nylon stockings and members of the local drag racing club are under suspicion. What a relief! After the grime and sleaze I've been watching its nice to get a good wholesome serial killer movie. Typical teen hijinks with clueless parents and an understanding but poorly acted cop. Not a good movie at all but entertaining with some unintentional laughs. On MST3K ep. 514.

April 14
38. Fists of Bruce Lee (1978)* (Mill Creek Martial Arts 20 Movie Pack Disc 4)
Two groups are after a list of names for some reason. Basic, vague plot with lots of fights. Bruce Li has nice moves and has many Bruce Lee mannerisms down pat but after a while, a feeling of sameness sets in. Only fair.
39. Mafia (1968)* aka Il Giorro Della Civetta
A new police captain starts a cat and mouse game with a Mafia Don after an independent contractor is murdered.l Not much action but with sometimes complicated complicated strokes and counter strokes by both sides.
40. Kingdom of Spiders (1979)*
Tarantulas suddenly get organized and start attacking large mammals. Pretty standard eco-disaster but the county fair is in two weeks plot. Nothing new but very watchable. Shatner and rest of cast are adequate.
41. Death Is Nimble, Death Is Quick (1966)* (Sinister Cinema)
Joe Walker and Captain Rowland investigate the attempted kidnapping of a wealthy American's daughter by a sinister secret cult in Sri Lanka. Not really a very good movie, but full of neat touches like underground labs, ancient temples, and deadly swamps that make for a fun watch.
42. The Big Doll House (1971)* (Roger Corman's Cult Classics The Women in Cages Collection)
Several women in a South American prison plan an escape while being tormented by a sadistic chief guard. Good movie, well paced and directed featuring nudity, torture and violence. Exploitation heaven. Recommended for those so inclined.
43. Above the Law (1988)* (4 Film Favorites Steven Seagal Collection)
An unorthodox Chicago police detective starts uncovering high level secrets when a suspected drug shipment actually contains high grade military explosives. Good action movie with Seagal showing off his martial arts prowess but there are also lots of gunfights and car chases. I expected more martial arts action than there was.
44. The Wild Angels (1966)*
Roger Corman produced and directed this story about the death of a member of a motor cycle gang and how it affects the leader and the rest of the gang. The is lots of motorcycle action but the story had a personal dramatic side to it that I hadn't expected.

April 15
45. The Nuns of Saint Archangel (1973)* (Media Blasters Nunsploitation: 4 Disc Collection)
An officer of the archbishop's staff investigates corruption in a nunnery shortly after a new Mother Superior is named. Surprisingly not bad. Some nudity and torture but less than I expected and some nice sets and locations. A nod to the real world politics that the church engaged in in the 16th century although I don't know how accurate all that is.
46. Emanuelle and the Last Cannibals (1977)*
Newshound Emanuelle uses her clever hidden camera technique to get a scoop at a mental institution which leads to an expedition to the Amazon jungle in search of a tribe of cannibals. God help me, I couldn't resist after seeing the title but its another slow moving Emanuelle movie. The jungle expedition helps as does the fact that Emanuelle is in the background during much of that part of the film. If you need to see an Emanuelle movie or a cannibal flick this covers both bases and there is not any animal cruelty shown.
47. Hell's Belles (1969)*
A motorcycle racer uses guerrilla tactics when he goes after a motorcycle gang that stole his prize bike. Interesting movie with decent acting and a good chemistry between the leads. Something a little different in biker films.
48. The Black Belly of the Tarantula (1971)*
A police detective searches for the killer of beautiful women who paralyzes his victims before slowly killing them. Good giallo. Nice logical build up of the investigation, plenty of beautiful women, and a policeman with a personality and life. Some of the killings lack a little tension but worth watching.
49. Black Caesar (1973)*
A rise and fall crime drama about a shoe shine boy who eventually controls Harlem recalls some of the great gangster movies of the 1930's. Fred Williamson does a good job in the lead. Recommended.
50. Hot Potato (1976)* (4 Film Favorites Urban Action Collection)
Mr. Jones and his friends must rescue a senator's daughter from an Asian warlord's jungle base. Very poor martial arts comedy is more silly/stupid than funny. Even most of the fights are lame and repetitive. Jim Kelly is very much wasted here

April 16
51. Santo and the Blue Demon vs Dracula and the Wolfman (1973)*
An evil hunchback brings Dracula and the Wolfman back to life by sacrificing an elderly professor. Santo and the Blue Demon are charged with protecting the professor's beautiful daughters. One of the better Santo movies I've seen. The ring action does not interfere with the story, there are some good fights outside the ring, the plot makes sense, and there are some great sets. Recommended.
52. The Flame Barrier (1958)* (Sinister Cinema)
A woman forms an expedition in South America to find her missing husband who was lost while searching for a crashed satellite. Not great but not terrible. I would have liked more sf elements and the resolution is lame but the jungle trek along with the occasional mysterious event keep things interesting. Arthur Franz, one of my favorite B actors, turns in another solid performance.
53. The Thing That Couldn't Die (1958)* (Sinister Cinema)
People digging a well unearth a ancient chest containing a severed human head which turns out to have strange powers. Pretty cool horror movie has a few eerie moments enhanced by a moody score (which IMDB credits to Henry Mancini along with stock music including some from The Creature From the Black Lagoon). The head effects are generally well done.
54. Axe (1977)*
Three hit men looking for a hideout come upon an isolated farm house inhabited only by a young girl and her paralyzed grandfather. They decide to stay for a while. A strange little movie that I found quite interesting. Very low budget and somewhat amateurish but with an appealing if sparsely orchestrated score. Kind of like a fever dream.

April 17
55. Narcotic (1933)* (Sinister Cinema Poverty Row Studio Collection Roadshow Attractions Vol. 1)
A promising young doctor who runs a free clinic tries opium as a diversion but soon becomes hooked and destroys his life for drugs. Pretty standard cautionary tale with some nice moments including a great 'dope party' which clearly illustrates for the viewer the different effects that different drugs have.
56. Maniac (1934)* (Sinister Cinema Poverty Row Studio Collection Roadshow Attractions Vol. 1)
A very mad doctor and his crazed assistant conduct experiments to raise the dead. They succeed but then things get very strange. One of the most bizarre movies I've ever seen, a perfect example of an exploitation film. The story is occasionally interrupted by text defining various kinds of mental illness none of which relate to the story at the time they come on. And that's just the beginning! There are some real life animal fights shown. Recommended.

April 18
57. The Phenix City Story (1955)* (Warner Film Noir Classic Collection Vol. 5)
The fact based story of how Phenix City, Alabama, also known as Sin City, USA, began to clean itself up and get out from under the thumb of one of the largest vice rings in the country. The film starts with interviews of real life citizens by real life reporter Clete Roberts, followed by a dramatized version of how a state Attorney General was elected on the platform of cleaning up the city and state. The actors are convincing and the production values are pretty good.
58. Queen of the Amazon (1946)*(Sinister Cinema PovertyRow StudioCollection Screen Guild/Lippert Vol.1)
A woman forms a safari to search for her lost fiance who is rumored to be a captive of a mysterious white goddess deep in the African jungle. First part of the movie suffers from too much stock footage (from other films, wildlife, travel logs). As a matter of fact, it starts out in India for no good reason except to get some Indian travel log shots in. The second half has less of this and becomes an enjoyable action romp. Robert Lowery (Batman) makes a pleasant hero as always.

April 19
59. The Mermaid Chair (2006)* Streaming Hulu
A women returns to her island hometown to take care of her demented mother and ends up falling in love with a monk. I figured I'd get a whole new genre here, monkploitaion but it turns out the guy isn't even a real monk yet; he hasn't taken final vows or whatever so its more like protomonksploitation. This movie should have a lot of things going for it. It has scenes with mermaids, a voodoo queen, a psychic teenager, severed fingers, a suicide ritual, and a terrible secret but really, its just a dreary movie about a whiny woman who basically gets it all while disrupting a couple other lives.
60. Ghetto Stories: The Movie (2010)*
Story of two generations of drug dealers in Baton Rough and the complex web of family relationships that tie them together. Pretty interesting movie with more depth to the characters and the relations than I thought there would be. At times, almost a snapshot of ghetto life, I suspect some minor characters were just plain folk. Dialog was hard to make out at times.

April 20
61. Teenage Cave Man (1958) Streaming amctv
The son of the Symbol Maker begins questioning the laws of the clan that have been handed down and obeyed for generations. I've always liked this movie and decided to revisit it since I saw the remake earlier in the month. Sure, its a cheapie with most of the monster effects taken from other films but the monster costume they did make is wonderful in all its cheesy goodness, the Albert Glasser score is perfect, and the story is based on an interesting (if probably overused) idea which is nicely worked out.
62. If Footmen Tire You, What Will Horses Do? (1971)* Streaming Google
As America continues to turn away from Christianity it becomes more and more open to take over by the Communists. Rev. Estus W. Pirkle preaches and shows dramatizations of what could happen here. Commies on horses ride roughshod over the good Christians of the United States. Children are brainwashed, killed, or maimed while adults who refuse to give up their faith are gunned down. Clearly there is a touch of insanity in this film. Obviously fake gore and downright awful acting (a fake Russian accent fights a loosing battle against a southern drawl) are the highlights of this mess.
63. Pharaoh's Curse (1957)* Streaming Netflix
During a time of civil unrest, a small force of British soldiers is sent to retrieve an archeological expedition. In the desert, they encounter a young native woman and strange things begin to happen. I've wanted to see this for a long time and just couldn't resist when I noticed it was available. This is a nice variation on the classic mummy theme. At times it feels more like a straight adventure story than horror. The acting is competent and the sets, especially the tomb, are interesting. Not a masterpiece but quite good. Recommended.
64. Fist of Fury (1972) (HKL Bruce Lee 30th Anniversary Commemorative Edition) R2
The top student of a martial arts school seeks revenge for the death of his teacher and he suspects a rival Japanese school had something to do with it. Bruce Lee at his most ferocious (and crazed) and he even show some good acting ability. Highly recommended.
65. The Adventures of Barry McKenzie (1972)* (Oz-Ploitation Boxset Vol. 1) R4
Australian Barry inherits some money and travels to London with his aunt where he has quite a few silly and raunchy adventures. A surprisingly easy watch and I even laughed out loud a few times. Dame Edna works well as the aunt and Barry is quite charming in his provincial way. Fosters Forever!

April 21
66. Eve and the Handyman (1961)* (The Russ Meyer Collection) R2
A mysterious woman follows a handyman around all day observing the various situations he gets into. Somewhat enjoyable comedy. A couple of the scenes struck me as funny and a few others are mildly amusing but most are neither. Very little nudity, only one scene with bare breasts.
67. Wild Girls of the Naked West (1962)* (The Russ Meyer Collection) R2
Silly but entertaining spoof of western movie cliches with a good amount of bare female flesh. Some funny parts. Think Looney Tunes with booze and boobs.
68. Lorna (1964)* (The Russ Meyer Collection) R2
A young wife, who has never been satisfied by her husband, finds physical fulfillment with an escaped convict. Predictably disaster follows. Pretty good by sleazy. Acting is generally OK for a low budget with Hal Hopper especially good as the town creepy guy. The script is a bit heavy handed at times (with a preacher and a shot of Death) but all in all very watchable.
69. White Slaves of Chinatown (1965)*
Kind of a documentary tour of Olga's Chinatown headquarters shows how she is able to bend the minds and wills of her victims by following the training of her current crop of girls. Totally narrated and in a style similar to those educational shorts they showed in school. Some torture shown by not explicit often just the aftermath. Lots of bare flesh. Not terribly thrilling.
70. Olga's House of Shame (1964)*
At her country school for crime (an abandoned mining complex) Olga and her brother expand operations into jewel smuggling but discover traitors in their midst. The result - torture! Mostly just one torture scene after another, even bringing in girls we've never scene before (or will see again) for a few minutes of pain. While not explicit by today's standards there is far more on screen violence and fake gore than in the first film. Mainly narrated but some brief scenes with actual dialog.
71. Olga's Girls (1964)*
While training a batch of new girls, Olga must also deal with a police informer and a splinter group of her girls going out on their own. This is actually the second of the Olga films and better than the two I've already watched. The focus in the first part is drugs and we eventually learn that Moscow and Peking are the ultimate source of US drugs. The torture scenes are more deliberate here and so more disturbing. In general the whole movie seems better paced and slightly more coherent than the other ones. All narration.
72. The Layout (1969)*
Directed by Joe Sarno. Five women and two industrial strength vibrators. And that's all I'm going to say.

April 22
73. Something Weird (1967)* (SWV The Herschell Gordon Lewis Collection)
A psychic and a witch try to find a serial killer. Low budget roots show in some sub-par acting and effects but the story is interesting although it does digress too much in the middle. Still some performances are adequate and it is very entertaining.
74. Bikini Beach (1964)*
Another fun beach movie with Frankie and Annette adds drag racing and an old folk's home to the mix. Its still odd to see so many mainstream stars in a teen pic but it does seem to work. Little Stevie Wonder sings a tune at the end.
75. Girl Happy (1964)* (4 Film Favorites Elvis Presley Musicals)
Elvis and his band go to Ft. Lauderdale during spring break to keep an eye on the boss's daughter. Romance ensues. So-so Elvis film. Lots of songs and pretty girls but I miss the big production numbers some of his other films have.
76. Hot Moves (1984)*
Four high school juniors vow to get laid during the summer before their senior year. Typical characters and plot but well done. There are a few genuinely funny moments and its always pleasant to watch. Shots of real beach folk go on too long sometimes but do add a Venice Beach vibe. Quite a bit of nudity. Recommended if you're in the mood for some summer fun.
77. The Rebel Set MST3K version Show #419 (1992)* (Rhino Mystery Science Theater Vol. 12)
OK riffing. The short is funnier than the film but I was burning out about here

April 23
78. Run! Bitch Run! (2009)* Streaming Netflix
Two Catholic schoolgirls are tortured and raped by several rural lowlifes. One dies but the other survives. Full of sex, gore, nudity, and sleaze. Seems to be a tribute to classic 70's exploitation but takes everything much further than it went then.
79. The Adventures of Pluto Nash (2002)*
In 2087 ex-smuggler Pluto Nash tries to prevent a rich gangster from taking over his club and bringing gambling to his neighborhood. Not a terrible movie but not very good either. Fun and silly but not funny. Inoffensive and bland. Third biggest net losses on Wiki's list.

April 24
80. House of Evil (1968)*
A rich old man gathers his heirs. That evening he dies of a heart attack and then his heirs beginning dying, killed by toys and clockwork men. Karloff is solid (love his voice) and even the Mexican scenes are well done and the story makes some kind of sense.
81. Spine Tingler!: The William Castle Story (2007) (Sony The William Castle Film Collection)
A solid documentary. I just love the part near the beginning where they talk about the outrageous gimmicks he used for his horror movies. Highly recommended.

April 25
82. Vigilante (1983)* Streaming Netflix
A group of men try to protect their neighborhood from all types of crime when the police prove unable to do the job. Action packed movie hits all the right buttons. Strong cast. Recommended.
83. Chained Heat (1983)* (Panik House Mr. Skin Presents Women in Prison Triple Feature)
Women in prison revolt against corrupt guards and administration, lead by newbie Linda Blair. Set in the US, not some jungle republic. Good but lacks that last bit of sleaze needed to be great. The prisoners just don't seem dangerous, desperate enough. And Linda Blair isn't all that convincing -- a problem I've had with her in other films as well.

April 26
84. Fashion Model (1945)* Streaming Netflix
Comedy/Mystery about several murders and missing jewelry. Robert Lowery plays the stock boy suspected of the murders. Full of incredibly stupid cops and smart-mouthed dames, its mildly amusing at first but the unrelenting silliness becomes tiresome. Lowery is pleasant but Marjorie Weaver fails miserably to find any screwball charm in her fast talking model. She's just annoying.
85. Batman & Robin (1997)*
Mr. Freeze, Poison Ivy, and Bane fight, then team up. Batman and company must save the day. I was expecting the worst and while this was very, very bad, I still think Superman IV is even worse. Somewhere buried deep in the script is a good story about family relationships and family loss. There are hints, but it never really comes out. This is just a poor movie for so many reasons: awful dialog poorly delivered, miscast actors, bad looking costumes, sets and effects. I think they were trying more for the 50's type comic stories with giant props and funny looking machines than for TV camp but none of it really worked except for Michael Gough's Alfred. A very bad sequel.

April 27
86. Juvenile Jungle (1958)* Streaming Netflix
Some beer swilling punks join forces with a slightly older newcomer and plot the perfect kidnapping. Pretty darn good. The lead, Correy Allen, doesn't always seem to have his heart in it but the rest of the cast is fine. Solid directing by William Witney. Recommended if you're in the mood for a slightly sleazy crime drama.
87. The Maze (1953)* Streaming Netflix
A man inherits a barony just before his is to be married. He goes to his new home but then cuts off all contact with the outside world including his fiancee. Good 1950's horror story set in Scotland. Richard Carlson is one of my top ten favorite B-movie actors (even though I mixed up the dates and thought today was his birthday) and he does a good job of displaying happiness, sincerity and coldness at various times. The finish is quite creepy but there is one aspect to it that is so unintentionally funny that it almost spoils everything, even for someone like myself who loves the 50's style with all its flaws. Still highly recommended.
88. The Devil in Miss Jones (1973)*
A woman commits suicide and when she comes up for judgement, it is discovered that suicide is the only sin she has ever committed. She must be sent to Hell but is allowed some time to commit more sins to make it all worthwhile. Paper thin plot which allows a series of pornographic scenes involving various combinations of people, objects and even an animal. Actually kind of interesting but not really my thing.

April 28
89. Men of San Quentin (1942)* (Sinister Cinema Poverty Row Studio Collection PRC Vol. 9)
A newly married prison guard gets entangled in prison politics due to the manipulations of the Deputy Chief Guard (played by Charles Middleton). Good prison drama is quickly resolved and the rest of the movie becomes a PSA for prison reform.
90. Legion of Missing Men (1937)* (SinisterCinema Poverty RowStudio Collection Monogram Pictures Vol.6)
Arab tribes at war with the French Foreign Legion capture several machine guns but then need to kidnap some Legionnaires to help put them together. Good action picture with sets that really give the feeling of exotic locales. Final battle is just a bit of a letdown, probably due to low budget.
91. War of the Gargantuas (US version) (1970)
Two hairy, giant humanoids, one brown and one green, take on each other and the Japanese military. Fun kaiju movie with all the usual plot points.
92. A Long Ride From Hell (1969)*
While pursuing horse thieves, a rancher is framed for a train robbery and is sent to prison. He escapes and seeks revenge on all those who done him wrong. Steve Reeves makes a handsome if clean cut and poker-faced hero. A good western with plenty of action and suspense. Recommended for a spaghetti western fix.
93. Roy Colt & Winchester Jack (1970)* (Anchor Bay The Mario Bava Collection #2)
Two gangs race each other for a treasure of gold. Ambushes, betrayals, and shoot outs steadily reduce the numbers in each gang. Lighthearted but bloody spaghetti western. The humor is funniest when its a bit subtle. There is only one really silly, stupid part.
94. Three the Hard Way (1974)* (4 Film Favorites Urban Action Collection)
A record producer, a PR man, and the owner of martial arts schools take on a white supremacist group that has developed a virus that will only kill blacks. Blacksploitation meets Bondsploitation in a fun film with a funky soundtrack and full of implausible action sequences and an insanely high body count. Brown, Williamson, and Kelly manage to pull it off though. Recommended for those times when all critical judgement has been suspended.
95. Friday Foster (1975)*
Former model and news photographer Friday Foster witnesses an attempted assassination of "the black Howard Hughes" and soon finds her own life in danger. Pam Grier is lovely but the movie is not all that good. Except for some bare breast it reminded me of an episode of a 70's TV show. Friday outdoes Lois Lane for her reckless stupidity and there are some absolutely awful lines of dialog.
96. Tremors 2: Aftershocks (1996)* (Universal Tremors Attack Pack)
The Graboids appear in a Mexican oil field and Earl is convinced to go there to destroy them. Entertaining sequel with a new twist or two.

April 29
97. Tremors 4: The Legend Begins (2003)* (Universal Tremors Attack Pack)
The Graboids appear in the Old West back when Perfection was called Rejection. A Gummer arrives in town from back East to see why his mine isn't making money. Fun, although a sense of sameness sets in.
98. Zaat (1971)*
A crazed scientist has been working on a way to turn humans into fish since WW2. He finally succeeds on himself and now is out looking for a mate! A wonderful, crazy, stupid, awful movie. There are so many things wrong: we see the monster suit way too much, the overall pacing, the acting, sudden jumps in the script, a score that is either noise or cues used in 1950's TV shows. The redneck sheriff is by far my favorite character. Recommended as an overdose of bad movie goodness.
99. The Sister-in-Law (1974)* (BCI Drive In Cult Classics)
A man has an affair with his brother's estranged wife and gets involved with some of his brother's shady activities. Interesting story but the acting often leaves something to be desired. Plenty of nudity.
100. The Stepmother (1972)* (BCI Drive In Cult Classics)
In a fit of rage, a man kills his wife's lover and tries to hide the crime but luck turns against him. A tale of 70's style beautiful people gone wrong. Slow moving story wanders around a lot. Think of a Colombo episode without a hint of humor or cleverness.
101. Olga's Dance Hall Girls (1966)*
The last and the least of the Olga films I have. NO plot, just a lot of dancing and writhing with and without clothes. No torture shown but boring conversions with and without actual dialog have the same effect on the viewer. Slimy Harry is a highlight of sorts as are the satanic touches but overall pretty boring. Even the new Olga looks terminally bored most of the time. Bad even for an Olga movie.

April 30
102. Revelation (1999)*
The Rapture is history and the anti-Christ, pretending to be the Messiah, controls the world. A counter-terrorism agent discovers that there is more to the upcoming Day of Wonder than anyone suspects. Sequel to Jack Van Impe produced Apocalypse, which I watched last year, is a solid thriller mixing science fiction and the supernatural although it is poorly acted at times. Looking forward to the next installment.
As promised the third and final Bill Rebane double feature. This completes my survey of his films which I began last year.
103. Nightmare aka Blood Harvest (1987)* (Brentwood/BCI Psychotic Tendencies 4 Movies)
A girl returns to her hometown to find her parents missing and her friends soon start disappearing as well. Pretty good effort by Bill Rebane although there are still huge plot holes and obvious solutions to problems. Thing would have been so different is the heroine had just locked the doors and windows once in a while. Tiny Tim is very good in his role, perhaps the best part of the film.
104. Twister's Revenge (1987) (Mill Creek Drive-In Movie Classics 50 Movie Pack)
A monster truck driver's new wife is kidnapped by Dumb, Dumber, and Dumbest. He goes after her with the help of a talking monster truck complete with AI (K.I.T.T. has nothing on this baby!). Poor pacing with action sequences that go on for way too long and galatically stupid villains prove to be this movies downfall.
105. 42nd Street Forever Vol. 2: The Deuce
Great trailer compilation. Nice way to finish this challenge off.

Re: List Thread-Third Annual Drive-In/Exploitation/B-Movie Challenge Mar 31-Apr 30 20

ASH KETCHUM'S 2ND ANNUAL DRIVE-IN/EXPLOITATION/B-MOVIE CHALLENGE
April 2012

Sat. March 31, 2012
1. THE HOODLUM (1951/U.S., 62 min., b&w, crime drama/Eagle-Lion) DVD
Dir.: Max Nosseck. Cast: Lawrence Tierney, Allene Roberts, Edward Tierney.
Tierney plays a hard-boiled career criminal as only he could. Low-budget but hardcore. Nosseck had directed Tierney in his first starring role, DILLINGER (1945).

Sun. April 1, 2012
2. KING DINOSAUR (1955/U.S., 63 min., b&w, science fiction/Lippert) DVD
Dir.: Bert I. Gordon. Cast: Bill Bryant, Wanda Curtis, Douglas Henderson, Patti Gallagher.
Low-budget voyage to a planet crawling with lizards pretending to be dinosaurs. Lots of stock footage and cruelty to animals. Memorable line: “I brought the atom bomb. I think it’s a good time to use it.” Pretty laughable throughout, but I loved it when I saw it on TV as a kid.

3. DANGER: DIABOLIK (1968/Italy, 100 min., color, crime caper/Paramount) DVD (English-dubbed)
Dir.: Mario Bava. Cast John Phillip Law, Marisa Mell, Michel Piccoli, Adolfo Celi. Stylized caper about a master thief in a leather body suit, based on a popular Italian comic book and designed very much to look and feel like a comic book, but I could have used more thrills. Great score by Ennio Morricone.

4. DANGER: DIABOLIK (1968/Italy, 100 min., color, crime caper/Paramount) DVD (English-dubbed)
Re-screened with audio commentary by John Phillip Law and Tim Lucas.

Mon. April 2, 2012
5. KEOMA (1976/Italy, 101 min., color, western) VHS (English-dubbed)
Dir.: Enzo G. Castellari. Cast: Franco Nero, William Berger, Woody Strode, Olga Karlatos.
A late entry in the Italian western cycle and a little more heavy-handed than most, with intimations of a Christ allegory late in the film. The action is good and the style a little different, but the attempt to give it a message really slows it down and makes it longer than it needed to be. Strode and Berger have good parts, with Strode quite impressive in an action role at the age of 61.

6. RIDERS OF THE WHISTLING SKULL (1937/U.S., 58 min., b&w, B-western/Republic) Beta SP
Dir.: Mack V. Wright. Cast: Robert Livingston, Ray Corrigan, Max Terhune.
A "Three Mesquiteers" western about the search for a lost city of gold protected by a "fanatic Indian cult." Not the most enlightened script, but there's plenty of rugged location shooting amidst wild rock formations and great stunt work by co-star Ray Corrigan.

Tues. April 3, 2012
7. THE SOMBRERO KID (1942/U.S., 56 min., b&w, B-western/Republic) Beta SP
Dir.: George Sherman. Cast: Don "Red" Barry, Lynn Merrick, Stuart Hamblen.
Don "Red" Barry was a western star who didn't sing, trick-ride, lasso, or do comedy. He just galloped, shot and punched. But he was also a much better actor than most B-western stars. This one's got a standard plot, but it moves well, has plenty of action, and is sharply directed by Sherman.

Wed. April 4, 2012
8. THE ST. VALENTINE’S DAY MASSACRE (1967/U.S., 100 min., color, gangster drama/20th Century Fox) VHS
Dir.: Roger Corman. Cast: Jason Robards, George Segal, Ralph Meeker.
Nicely shot and acted, with a great cast that includes even Jack Nicholson in a bit part. Robards is a little too over-the-top, though, and looks and acts nothing like Capone. In that regard, I'm a bigger fan of Rod Steiger’s AL CAPONE (1959) which I watched for the Action/Adventure/Crime Challenge last month.

9. FORBIDDEN TRAILS (1941/U.S., 59 min., b&w, B-western/Monogram) DVD (Part of Mill Creek's Western Legends box set)
Dir.: Robert N. Bradbury. Cast: The Rough Riders: Buck Jones, Tim McCoy, Raymond Hatton.
Standard B-western plot enlivened by three of the greats of the genre: Jones, McCoy and Hatton. Jones and McCoy were the real deal, men with genuine cowboy skills and strong screen presence.

Thurs. April 5, 2012 (Roger Corman's 86th birthday)
10. CAPONE (1975/U.S., 101 min., color, gangster drama/Fox) VHS.
Prod.: Roger Corman. Dir.: Steve Carver. Cast: Ben Gazzara, Susan Blakely, Sylvester Stallone.
Gazzara has cotton in his cheeks and it interferes with his line delivery. This film covers a lot more of Capone’s life than the other two Capone movies I've watched recently. It includes a scene where the 44-year-old Gazzara plays Capone as a teenager in 1918 and it takes him to his final year in Florida in 1946, but it’s all done very crudely. Stallone makes a good Frank Nitti, though. John Cassavetes has a cameo as Frankie Yale.

11. THE INTRUDER (1962/U.S., 84 min., b&w, racial drama) Beta SP
Dir.: Roger Corman. Cast: William Shatner, Frank Maxwell, Leo Gordon, Jeanne Cooper.
What better way to celebrate Roger Corman's 86th birthday than to watch one of his absolutely best films (and the only one to actually lose money)? This drama about racial violence in the Civil Rights-era South remains a powerful document of its time. Shatner as you've never seen him uses the n-word and rants about Jews in his role as a paid rabble-rouser who arrives in a southern town to stir up trouble in the wake of court-ordered desegregation.

12. BLOODY MAMA (1970/U.S., 90 min., color, crime drama/AIP) DVD (part of the Roger Corman Collection box set)
Dir.: Roger Corman. Cast: Shelley Winters, Don Stroud, Bruce Dern, Robert De Niro.
Shelley Winters plays Ma Barker in a cartoonish over-the-top fashion while the four actors playing her psychotic, damaged sons manage to create nuanced human beings. Despite the wild historical inaccuracies, some emotional honesty shines through.

13. Bruce Lee, Woodstock and Me: A talk by Fred Weintraub, producer of ENTER THE DRAGON and THE BIG BRAWL. Live event at Barnes & Noble Tribeca. Weintraub, who also produced Cynthia Rothrock’s first American movies, is the author of a new memoir, Bruce Lee, Woodstock and Me: From the Man Behind a Half-Century of Music, Movies and Martial Arts.

Fri. April 6, 2012
14. X - THE MAN WITH THE X-RAY EYES (1963/U.S., 79 min., color, science fiction/AIP) DVD (part of the Roger Corman Collection box set)
Dir.: Roger Corman. Cast: Ray Milland, Diana Van der Vlis, Don Rickles.
Audio Commentary by Roger Corman.
I watched this and listened to the commentary for last year's Challenge, so I decided to revisit the commentary this year to follow up on the Corman fest of the last couple of days.

15. THE BRIDE AND THE BEAST (1958/U.S., 78 min., b&w, jungle adventure/Allied Artists) DVD
Dir.: Adrian Weiss. Screenplay: Edward D. Wood, Jr. Cast: Charlotte Austin, Lance Fuller.
A new bride has a yen for gorillas based on the “fact” that she was a gorilla in a past life. She practically gets it on with her husband’s pet gorilla, “Spanky,” on her wedding night. A doctor (named Carl Reiner, I kid you not) uses this to explain the bride’s love of angora sweaters. Well, what do you expect from an Ed Wood screenplay? If only he had directed it also.

16. AL CAPONE (1959/U.S., 105 min., b&w, gangster biopic/Allied Artists) VHS
Dir.: Richard Wilson. Cast: Rod Steiger, Fay Spain, Martin Balsam, James Gregory.
I watched this in March for the Action/Crime Challenge and decided to watch it again after watching the other Capone films (see #8 and #10) and starting to read a biography of Capone. This may be the best of the Capone films.

17. POLICE STORY (1985/Hong Kong, 95 min., color, action comedy/Golden Harvest) DVD (in Cantonese with English subtitles)
Dir.: Jackie Chan. Cast: Jackie Chan, Brigitte Lin, Maggie Cheung.
I picked this one to celebrate Jackie’s 58th birthday. It shows his increasing sophistication as a director and utter foolhardiness as a star/stuntman. Ouch! Two of my favorite actresses are in it, but they get banged around a lot in the scenes where they try to help Jackie. Double ouch!

18. RENEGADE GIRL (1946/U.S., 66 min., b&w, western/Screen Guild) DVD (Part of Mill Creek's Western Legends box set)
Dir.: William Berke. Cast: Ann Savage, Alan Curtis, Edward Brophy, Claudia Drake.
Unsung B-western set in Missouri during and after the Civil War, with Ann Savage as a hard-riding female outlaw who had worked for Quantrill. Things get complicated when she falls for a Union Army captain. Both of the actresses from Edgar G. Ulmer’s DETOUR (1945) are in this. A pleasant surprise.

19. THE TRAIL BEYOND (1934/U.S., 55 min., b&w, western/Lone Star) DVD (Part of Mill Creek's Western Legends box set)
Dir.: Robert Bradbury. Cast: John Wayne, Verna Hillie, Noah Beery Jr., Noah Beery Sr.
Mounties are after Wayne and his buddy, Noah Jr., who’s the victim of a frame-up. Set in Canada, but shot on location at several picturesque locations in California. Wayne spends a lot of time in the water, swimming or in a canoe. Full of action.

20. THE SHEPHERD GIRL (1964/Hong Kong, 101 min., color, operetta/Shaw Bros.) DVD (in Mandarin with English subtitles)
Dir.: Lo Chen. Cast: Julie Yeh Feng, Kwan Shan, Yang Chih-Ching.
I wanted to watch something nonviolent, musical and nature-themed for Easter, and this one qualifies thanks to the Shaw Bros. connection. This is a love story set in a traditional Chinese seaside village in which the young would-be lovers constantly sing to each other. Beautifully filmed.

21. OVERLAND STAGE RAIDERS (1938/U.S., 55 min., b&w, western/Republic) VHS
Dir.: George Sherman. Cast: John Wayne, Ray Corrigan, Louise Brooks.
Pretty wild “Three Mesquiteers” western in which the bad guys rob a plane of gold—in mid-flight! Silent star Louise Brooks has her last film role as the sister of the pilot and the Duke’s love interest. Lots of action and well-budgeted for a Republic western.

22. ROUGH RIDERS' ROUND-UP (1939/U.S., 54 min., b&w, western/Republic) Beta SP
Dir.: Joseph Kane. Cast: Roy Rogers, Mary Hart, Raymond Hatton, Dorothy Sebastian.
Roy plays an ex-Rough Rider who knocks out a rabble-rouser denouncing Teddy Roosevelt right at the beginning. He and other ex-Rough Riders join the Border Patrol in Arizona--not to keep out illegals, but to stop American outlaws who cross the border to raid a gold mine. Fast-paced, if unusually plot-heavy at times.

Tues. April 10, 2012
23. RIDE BEYOND VENGEANCE (1966/U.S., 101 min., color, western/Columbia) VHS
Dir.: Bernard McEveety. Cast: Chuck Connors, Michael Rennie, Kathryn Hays, Claude Akins.
Today being Chuck Connors’ birthday, I decided to re-watch this western about a buffalo hunter returning home after 11 years and finding nothing but trouble. With its second-tier cast, most of whom were doing TV at the time, and its backlot-and-soundstage production, it resembles a TV movie of the era. Not bad, but highly melodramatic.

24. THE COLOSSUS OF RHODES (1961/Italy, 128 min., color, historical epic/MGM) DVD (English-dubbed)
Dir.: Sergio Leone. Cast: Rory Calhoun, Lea Massari, Georges Marchal.
Long, slow, and dull, with a miscast American western star in the lead role of a Greek warrior visiting the island of Rhodes in 280 B.C. and getting caught up in a rebellion. This was Leone’s first directorial credit and he had better luck with another American western star in his next film—an actual western, A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS, and the rest, as they say, is history.

25. TERROR BENEATH THE SEA (1966/Japan, 79 min., color, science fiction) DVD (English-dubbed)
Dir.: Hajime Sato. Cast: Sonny Chiba, Peggy Neal, Franz Gruber.
Odd, but compelling Japanese sci-fi about an underwater base run by a mad scientist who mutates humans into Creature-from-the-Black-Lagoon-type monsters who can live underwater. One of the few pre-GREEN SLIME Japanese movies to have a predominantly Caucasian cast. Chiba’s the only real actor in the cast and he gets to do some karate moves on the monsters.

26. BORDER PATROL (1943/U.S., 63 min., b&w, western/UA) DVD (Cowboy Legends Collector’s Set from Echo Bridge)
Dir.: Lesley Selander. Cast: William Boyd (as Hopalong Cassidy), Andy Clyde, Russell Simpson, Claudia Drake.
Hopalong Cassidy is a Texas Ranger investigating a murder in a border town. George (Superman) Reeves plays a Mexican. Robert Mitchum, in his film debut, plays a henchman of the villain. As B-westerns go, this one is quite well-made and bigger-budgeted than usual.

27. NEVADA (1944/U.S., 62 min., b&w, western/RKO) DVD
Dir.: Edward Killy. Based on novel by Zane Grey. Cast: Robert Mitchum, Anne Jeffreys, Nancy Gates, Guinn “Big Boy” Williams.
Mitchum’s first starring role and he’s already quite a compelling screen presence—clearly a movie star ready to graduate from B-westerns. This one moves fast and is well-made, but packs way too complicated a plot into a tale of murder and frame-up set against the discovery of the Comstock Lode.

28. THE BODYGUARD (1976/Japan, 88 min., color, crime-martial arts thriller/Toei) DVD (part of The Sonny Chiba Collection) English-dubbed
Dir.: Ryuichi Takamori. Star: Sonny Chiba.
Incoherent crime drama with Chiba as an anti-drug crusader hired as a bodyguard by a woman trying to sell a stolen cache of mafia heroin. The brief fight scenes are so badly photographed they’re not even worth watching. There’s a pointless scene at a Times Square dojo at the beginning that was shot by the American distributor and tacked on to the film.

29. DRAGON PRINCESS (1976/Japan, 80 min., color, martial arts drama/Toei) DVD (part of The Sonny Chiba Collection) English-dubbed
Dir.: Yutaka Kohira. Cast: Sue Shiomi, Sonny Chiba, Yasuaki Kurata.
In what is basically a supporting role, Chiba plays Shiomi’s father who teaches her martial arts so she can get revenge on the men who crippled him. In Japan she dresses up as a Buddhist monk and meets Yasuaki Kurata (a Japanese actor who made a name for himself in Hong Kong kung fu films) and the two team up. Not as good as SISTER STREETFIGHTER, but worth a look.

Fri. April 13, 2012
30. GOD FORGIVES, I DON’T (1967/Italy, 109 min., color, Italian Western) VHS (English-dubbed)
Dir.: Giuseppe Colizzi. Cast: Terence Hill, Bud Spencer, Frank Wolff.
The first team-up of Hill and Spencer and it suffers from being deadly serious (and deadly dull). When they played for laughs, as in the TRINITY films, they were much better.

31. SHAKEDOWN (1988/U.S., 96 min., color, crime drama/Universal) DVD
Dir.: James Glickenhaus. Cast: Peter Weller, Sam Elliott, Patricia Charbonneau, Antonio Fargas.
A legal aid lawyer teams up with a maverick NYPD cop (from Texas!) for an utterly preposterous plot involving a massive ring of corrupt cops and their drug dealer buddies. Worth seeing for a couple of great scenes shot on 42nd Street in the last glory days of “the Deuce” and an insane chase through Coney Island.

32. STREET FIGHTER II: THE MOVIE (1994/Japan, 101 min., color, anime martial arts thriller/Capcom) DVD (in Japanese with English subs.)
Dir.: Gisaburo Sugii.
Simple plot designed to fold in most of the characters from the video game and provide plenty of fight action. I prefer the follow-up anime TV series, “Street Fighter II-V” (1995), because it had a full season (29 eps.) to develop the characters and story arcs.

33. TWILIGHT ON THE RIO GRANDE (1947/U.S., 71 min., b&w, western/Republic) DVD
Dir.: Frank McDonald. Cast: Gene Autry, Adele Mara, Sterling Holloway, Bob Steele.
Roy Rogers’ westerns were full of action, with a song here and there, while Gene Autry’s westerns were full of songs, with bits of action here and there. I’ve always found Autry to be much too stiff to be an appealing western hero and I’ve never understood his popularity from the '30s to the '50s. This one has an awkward mix of violence, comedy and musical numbers.

34. BLACK ANGELS (2011/Japan, 74 min, color, crime thriller) DVD (in Japanese with English subs.)
Cast: Motoki Ochiai, Maimi Yajima, Shoichi Honda, Eiji Uchida.
Trashy digital straight-to-video “thriller” about a bike messenger who doubles as the crusading “Black Angel” in order to take on a sex-trafficking club in Tokyo. I watched it only because it features one of my favorite Japanese pop stars, Maimi Yajima, in a key role as a morally ambiguous bodyguard for the club’s sleazy manager. She’s beautiful but should stick to singing.

35. BROTHERS FIVE (1970/Hong Kong, 102 min., color, martial arts epic/Shaw Bros.) Blu-ray (in Mandarin with English subs.)
Dir.: Lo Wei. Cast: Cheng Pei Pei, Yueh Hua, Lo Lieh, Tien Feng.
A Shaw Bros. masterpiece. Cheng Pei Pei plays a swordswoman who reunites five brothers so they can learn “Five Tigers with One Heart” kung fu and win back control of Flying Dragon Villa from the villain who killed their father. Beautifully shot and staged with tons of great fight scenes from start to finish. Sammo Hung co-directed the action scenes and has a small fighting role.

Sun. April 15, 2012
36. HALF PAST DEAD (2002/U.S., 98 min., color, action thriller/Screen Gems) DVD
Dir.: Don Michael Paul. Cast: Steven Seagal, Ja Rule, Morris Chestnut, Nia Peeples.
“DIE HARD-in-prison” thriller with Seagal as an undercover Fed who fights back when criminals invade “New Alcatraz” to retrieve a condemned man who knows where $200 million in gold is hidden. There’s a martial arts battle between Nia Peeples and Ja Rule--I kid you not. Watchable but ludicrous. Shot in Germany.

37. UNIVERSAL SOLDIER: THE RETURN (1999/U.S., 83 min., color, sci-fi thriller/Tri-Star) DVD
Dir.: Mic Rodgers. Cast: Jean-Claude Van Damme, Michael Jai White, Heidi Schanz.
Another preposterous thriller, this one about a computer program that acquires a super-powered human body and takes over a military facility. But it gives us lots of Van Damme doing his stuff, plus, in the last third, Michael Jai White making a formidable opponent.

38. THE COLOSSUS OF RHODES (1961/Italy, 128 min., color, historical epic/MGM) DVD (English-dubbed) Dir.: Sergio Leone.
Rescreened with audio commentary by Christopher Frayling, Leone’s biographer.
Frayling is full of facts about Leone, the cast, the "peplum" genre, and the Italian film industry in general.

39. THE TRIP (1967/U.S., 79 min., color, drug-themed drama/AIP) DVD
Dir.: Roger Corman. Cast: Peter Fonda, Bruce Dern, Dennis Hopper.
Screened with audio commentary by Roger Corman.
Corman is clearly proud of this film and goes into great detail on the technical aspects, but I would like to have heard from Peter Fonda or Jack Nicholson (who wrote the screenplay) with info about the actors and the characters.

Mon. April 16, 2012
40. ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST (1969/Italy-U.S., 165 min., color, western/Paramount) DVD
Dir.: Sergio Leone. Cast: Claudia Cardinale, Henry Fonda, Charles Bronson, Jason Robards.
Screened with audio commentary by Christopher Frayling and Sheldon Hall, with contributions from Claudia Cardinale, Bernardo Bertolucci, John Carpenter and Alex Cox.
I wish Frayling had done the entire commentary. He’s the most interesting and informative.

41. ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST
DVD features: four documentaries: Opera of Violence, Wages of Sin, Something to Do with Death, Railroad: Revolutionizing the West.
The first three all feature the same people (those who participated in the commentary, plus cinematographer Tonino Delli Colli) talking about the making of the film. They could easily have just put them all together to make one hour-plus documentary.

Thurs. April 19, 2012
42. THE DEADLIEST ART: THE BEST OF THE MARTIAL ARTS FILMS (1992/U.S., 90 min., color, documentary/Golden Harvest) VHS
Dir.: Sandra Weintraub. Host: John Saxon. Interviewees: Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung, Cynthia Rothrock.
Tons of great clips from American and Hong Kong martial arts films, mostly from the 1980s, with the emphasis on Hong Kong films produced by Golden Harvest. The producer, Fred Weintraub, also produced ENTER THE DRAGON and, years later, CHINA O’BRIEN, which gets a lot of coverage here. Basically stops at 1990.

43. BELLS OF DEATH (1968/Hong Kong, 84 min., color, martial arts adventure/Shaw Bros.) DVD (in Mandarin with English subs.)
Dir.: Yueh Feng. Cast: Chang Yi, Chin Ping, Ku Feng.
A man’s family is murdered by bandits so he learns fighting skills and seeks revenge, tracking the killers down one by one. There’s lots of action and it’s well-staged but not well photographed. The fights are often shot in darkness with long lenses and a handheld camera. Check out BROTHERS FIVE (#35) to see how swordfights should be shot.

Fri. April 20, 2012
44. TRUE ROMANCE (1993/U.S., 121 min., color, crime thriller/Warner Bros.) DVD (Unrated Director’s Cut)
Dir.: Tony Scott. Scr.: Quentin Tarantino. Cast: Christian Slater, Patricia Arquette, Dennis Hopper.
Utterly ludicrous premise that’s written and acted with such wit and charm that it’s impossible to resist. The best film Scott ever directed and Tarantino usually gets the lion’s share of the credit. He provides the wit, while the cast members provide the charm. A suitable film for 4/20, thanks to Brad Pitt’s pot-smoking character, Floyd.

45. VENGEANCE OF A SNOW GIRL (1971/Hong Kong, 117 min., color, swordplay adventure/Shaw Bros.) DVD (in Mandarin with English subtitles)
Dir.: Lo Wei. Cast: Li Ching, Yueh Hua, Tien Feng.
Very good dramatic adventure of a crippled female swordswoman out for revenge against those who killed her parents. One of her targets has a son who falls in love with her and seeks her forgiveness, leading to some highly unusual plot turns. Beautifully mounted production.

46. THE GREEN SLIME (1969/Japan-U.S., 90 min., color, science fiction/MGM-Toei) DVD
Dir.: Kinji Fukasaku. Cast: Robert Horton, Luciana Paluzzi, Richard Jaeckel.
Japanese science fiction with an all-Caucasian cast led by three name actors from the west. Some green slime carried into a space station from a mission on an asteroid grows into a bunch of monsters that attack power sources on the ship and kill crewmen who get in their way. I love this movie.

47. KAMEN RIDER X: FIVE RIDERS VS. KING DARK (1974/Japan, 30 min., color, superhero sci-fi adventure/Toei) VHS fan-sub (in Japanese with English subtitles) Cast: Ryo Hayami, Hiroshi Fujioka, Akira Yamaguchi.
Short movie spin-off of the long-running live-action Kamen Rider TV franchise, in which masked heroes who ride motorcycles fight outlandish monsters with martial arts. Here the main monster is “Franken-Bat,” so called because he looks like Frankenstein but with bat wings.

Sun. April 22, 2012
48. A FINE PAIR (1969/Italy, 89 min., color, caper comedy/National General) VHS
Dir.: Francesco Maselli. Stars: Rock Hudson, Claudia Cardinale.
I watched this mainly because I wanted to hear Ennio Morricone’s score again. It’s actually quite a charming caper movie, with a delightful performance by Cardinale. Turns out to be the second Cardinale film released in New York in May 1969 that I’ve seen in a week, the other being ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST. This one, at least, has Claudia dub her own voice. (GREEN SLIME, which I saw yesterday, was also released in New York in May 1969.)

49. FIST OF THE NORTH STAR (1986/Japan, 109 min., color, anime post-apocalyptic sci-fi adventure/Toei) VHS (Streamline Pictures/dubbed in English) Dir.: Toyoo Ashida.
Supremely gory movie spin-off of the popular 1984 TV series. Two fighters roam a devastated landscape tackling bands of monstrous ROAD WARRIOR-type thugs and doing bloody damage to them. Beautifully animated and the English voice acting is actually quite good. The post-apocalyptic theme makes this suitable for Earth Day.

Mon. April 23, 2012
50. RINGO AND HIS GOLDEN PISTOL (1966/Italy, 87 min., color, western) VHS
Dir.: Sergio Corbucci. Cast: Mark Damon, Ettore Manni, Franco De Rosa.
Watchable, if a little on the silly side. Standard Italian western, with 3rd-tier American lead. Corbucci’s later films, like THE MERCENARY, were much more stylish. Good score by Carlo Savina.

Tues. April 24, 2012
51. BUCKSKIN FRONTIER (1943/U.S., 76 min., b&w, western) DVD (Part of the Mill Creek Western Legends set)
Dir.: Lesley Selander. Cast: Richard Dix, Jane Wyatt, Albert Dekker, Lee J. Cobb.
Convoluted plot about railroad vs. freight line. It's never clear why the heck everyone's fighting each other. There's enough business for everybody. Dix was 49 at the time and a bit too tired and heavy for a swashbuckling western role. Lee J. Cobb was a year younger than Jane Wyatt, yet he plays her father. George (Superman) Reeves has a small part.

52. SCARED TO DEATH (1947/U.S., color, mystery-horror/Screen Guild) VHS
Dir.: Christy Cabanne. Cast: Bela Lugosi, George Zucco, Nat Pendleton, Douglas Fowley.
No B-movie challenge would be complete without a Bela Lugosi movie. This was the master’s only color movie, filmed in “Natural Color,” a cheap 2-color process heavy on blue and orange. Very odd movie with more laughs than scares, as when a wisecracking reporter tells his dumb-blonde fiancée, “Baby, I’m gonna miss you an awful lot when I get tired of you.”

Wed. April 25, 2012
53. VIOLENCE (1947/U.S., b&w, crime drama/Monogram) DVD (Warner Archive)
Dir.: Jack Bernhard. Cast: Nancy Coleman, Michael O’Shea, Sheldon Leonard.
This could have been a powerful social document about hate groups exploiting WWII veterans’ frustrations, but it descends quickly into cheap gangster melodrama, with Sheldon Leonard doing his patented tough-guy schtick ad nauseum. Not terribly believable.

54. THE THREE STOOGES GO AROUND THE WORLD IN A DAZE (1963/U.S., 94 min., b&w, comedy/Columbia) VHS (taped off TCM)
Dir.: Norman Maurer. Cast: The Three Stooges: Moe Howard, Larry Fine, Joe DeRita.
Late Stooges feature is modern-day remake of AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS, with the role of Passepartout divided up among the Three Stooges. Not very funny although the scene where the Stooges turn the tables on their Red Chinese interrogators is definitely a highlight.

55. RIDERS TO THE STARS (1954/U.S., 81 min., color, science fiction/United Artists) TCM cablecast.
Dir.: Richard Carlson. Cast: William Lundigan, Martha Hyer, Richard Carlson, Herbert Marshall.
Straightforward almost semi-documentary color sci-fi about the first manned missions into space--with the unlikely goal of capturing a meteor. Actor Richard Carlson made his directorial debut with this. Carlson would have turned 100 this coming Sunday.

56. INVINCIBLE SHAOLIN (1978/Hong Kong, 98 min., color, kung fu/Shaw Bros.) DVD (in Mandarin with English subs.)
Dir. Chang Cheh. Cast: Lu Feng, Lo Meng, Kuo Chui, Chiang Sheng, Sun Chien, Wei Pai.
No challenge like this would be complete without a Shaolin movie or a Chang Cheh movie. The Five Venoms reunite in this tale of South Shaolin vs. North Shaolin, with extensive training scenes and a superb battle climax in which the six protagonists are divided up into pairs to fight each other. One of the best.

Thurs. April 26, 2012
57. SOUTHWARD HO! (1939/U.S., 53 min., b&w, western/Republic) DVD (Part of the Mill Creek Western Legends set)
Dir.: Joseph Kane. Cast: Roy Rogers, Mary Hart, Gabby Hayes.
Roy plays a Confederate veteran-turned-Texas rancher after the war who finds himself at odds with corrupt Union troops occupying the state. Too much comic relief from Gabby Hayes detracts from the serious storyline and excellent action scenes.

58. THE GLASS WALL (1953/U.S., 80 min., b&w, drama/Columbia) DVD (part of the Bad Girls of Film Noir set)
Dir.: Maxwell Shane. Cast: Vittorio Gassman, Gloria Grahame, Jerry Paris.
Italian actor Gassman plays a Hungarian “DP” (Displaced Person) on the lam in Manhattan after jumping ship. What could have been a solid social drama turns into a routine chase thriller, although it has lots of great location shooting in Times Square and around Manhattan, including a climax at the new UN building.

Fri. April 27, 2012
59. BELLS OF SAN FERNANDO (1947/U.S., 75 min., b&w, western/Screen Guild) DVD (Part of the Mill Creek Western Legends set)
Dir.: Terry Morse. Cast: Donald Woods, Gloria Warren, Anthony Warde.
A tale of California's San Fernando Valley from when the Spaniards owned it. Nice idea, but would have been better served by a bigger budget, more action, a better script and some higher-grade actors. The characters are mostly Hispanic, but are played by whites.

60. VILLAGE OF TIGERS (1974/Hong Kong, 79 min., color, swordplay adventure/Shaw Bros.) DVD (in Mandarin with English subs.)
Director: Yueh Feng, Wang Ping. Cast: Shu Pei Pei, Yueh Hua, Wang Hsieh.
Colorful, splashy swordplay adventure of clans in conflict in Old China. Shu Pei Pei is a no-nonsense horse-riding swordswoman in an array of striking fashions. Many great action scenes.

Sat. April 28, 2012
61. HERCULES AND THE TYRANTS OF BABYLON (1964/Italy, 85 min., color, sword-and-sandal/AIP) DVD (Part of the Mill Creek Sci-Fi Classics set) English-dubbed
Dir.: Domenico Paolella. Cast: Peter Lupus, Helga Line, Livio Lorenzon.
How could I complete this challenge without at least one Italian Hercules movie? This one stars American Peter Lupus, two years before he joined the cast of “Mission: Impossible.” It’s actually pretty good, with well-staged action scenes, a real plot and excellent supporting cast. And it’s one of the better-looking prints in this particular box set.

62. BLACK TIGHT KILLERS (1966/Japan, 87 min., color, crime thriller/Nikkatsu) VHS (in Japanese with English subs.)
Dir.: Yasuharu Hasebe. Cast: Akira Kobayashi, Chieko Matsubara, Akemi Kita.
Wild Japanese pop art thriller with bold stylized color schemes and lots of action as a karate-chopping news photographer contends with a gang of lethal female ninjas in black tights whose aims only gradually become clear. The plot has something to do with a search for gold hidden since the war. Has regular dance numbers and a few songs. Like Seijun Suzuki, but more fun.

Sun. April 29, 2012
63. THE LAST COMMAND (1955/U.S., 110 min., color, historical epic/Republic) VHS
Dir.: Frank Lloyd. Cast: Sterling Hayden, Richard Carlson, Ernest Borgnine, Arthur Hunnicutt.
Republic Pictures’ version of the Alamo and probably the biggest budgeted film they ever did, with hundreds of extras and location shooting in Texas. Today would have been Richard Carlson’s 100th birthday. He makes a very credible Colonel Travis here. Sterling Hayden plays Jim Bowie and Arthur Hunnicutt steals the show as a cornpone-spewing Davy Crockett—in a year when Fess Parker’s Davy Crockett was a hit on TV.

Mon. April 30, 2012
64. HANDS ACROSS THE BORDER (1944/U.S., 53 min., b&w, musical western/Republic) DVD (Cowboy Legends Collector’s Set from Echo Bridge)
Dir.: Joseph Kane. Cast: Roy Rogers, Ruth Terry, Duncan Renaldo, Guinn “Big Boy” Williams.
Rare Rogers western in which he plays an ordinary cowhand. Some good horsemanship on display, but it’s intercut with way too many musical numbers.

65. PLANET OF THE VAMPIRES (1965/Italy-Spain, 86 min., color, science fiction/AIP) VHS
Dir.: Mario Bava. Cast: Barry Sullivan, Norma Bengell, Angel Aranda.
Atmospheric, creepy and suspenseful tale of the investigation of a crashed ship and its dead crew on another planet and the horror that begins once the crew starts coming back to life. They’re not vampires, though. I saw this on a double bill with ST. VALENTINE’S DAY MASSACRE (see #8) in the summer of 1967 and I’ve now seen both films again for this challenge. I insist this is one of Bava's best.

66. LITTLE TOUGH GUY (1938/U.S., 86 min., b&w, crime drama/Universal) VHS
Dir.: Harold Young. Cast: Billy Halop, Huntz Hall, Helen Parrish.
Four of the Dead End Kids made this film at Universal at the same time all six of them were making Dead End Kids films at Warner Bros., all spun off from the social drama, DEAD END (1937), in which they reprised their Broadway roles. If you’ve ever wanted to see Huntz Hall as a tough guy who shoots it out with the police, this is the film for you.

67. SHE GODS OF SHARK REEF (1958/U.S., 63 min., color, south seas adventure/AIP) DVD (Part of the Mill Creek Sci-Fi Classics set)
Dir.: Roger Corman. Cast: Bill Cord, Don Durant, Lisa Montell.
In 1955, Corman made two films back-to-back in Hawaii. The second one, NAKED PARADISE, was far better. This one has a no-name cast and little in the way of story or thrills or suspense. The plot has to do with two Americans on the lam who are shipwrecked on an island filled with Hawaiian women who sing, dance and dive for pearls, but only one of whom is at all interested in men.

31st:
Trailers:Crazy Wild & Crazy,Nude Scrapbook,Wonderful Land of Oz,Censored
Shorts:Bottoms Up!, The Swinging Nurses
1. The Scavengers (1959)-I assumed I wouldn't go wrong with this due to it's title and the Independent International logo. But I sure picked a dud. To be fair, It's actually not that bad for a B-noir, but for this challenge, it most certainly was a wrong start. But the biggest savior of this was the sight of "Introducing Vic Diaz" on the opening credits. Nice to see the start for this Filipino legend!
2. Vigilante Force (1976)-This was like the hixploitation version of Bucktown where a hired enforcement-gang eventually becomes as corrupt as the thieves they previously wiped out. Not as entertaining as Bucktown (Or even the similarily-themed, The Black Gestapo) but at least there's some decent stuntwork in the fireball conclusion.
3. Jocks (1986)-Forgettable tennis movie---But it could've been an even more largely forgettable movie if it didn't have Shaft,Ogre,Dracula,Pruneface, the vato from Colors and Mariska Hargitay in it!
4. Run Swinger Run! (1967)-Told almost entirely in flashback (Rare to see for this time of the nudie genre), a swinger is running for her life from communists! (Commies in a nudie? Whoa!) Starts out slowly but begins to get mildly interesting once the plot is finally revealed. I'd actually like to see more of lead actress Elizabeth Bing (Love that name)
----------------------------------------
1st:
Trailers:I was a man, Girl Smugglers, Hot Skin and Cold Cash
Shorts:The Adventures of Busty Brown, Nude in the pool
5. Fatal Games (1984)-Masked maniac attacking olympic hopefuls with a javelin! I thought this would be a breath of fresh air (For an early 80's slasher) and it seemed good enough in the first half, but eventually runs out of steam.
6. X: The Unknown (1956)-Dean Jagger battles The Blob in Scotland! Fairly standard 50's sci-fi flick. What could set this one apart from others is some glimpses of early gore (Melting bodies!)
7. Sex Club International (1967)-According to the trailer, this was a sequel showcasing the further adventures of "Lucky Bang Bang" (Played Lucky Kargo---Yuk Yuk!) In this one, Lucky infiltrates an international cathouse-ring. This flick was heavy on dialogue, but thankfully, nearly all the women are nude while delivering their lines.
8. Blood Voyage (1976)-A Kenny Rogers-lookalike leads a boat cruise inhabited by a slashing maniac! This movie seems to get a bad rep from the few online reviews I've read, but I actually liked this. It's like one of those gems that you always hope to find when going through those box sets containing 20,50 or 100 movies---Except I watched this from youtube. Oh, and special shot-out goes to Mara Modair for the best ( o )( o ) seen yet!
----------------------------------------
2nd:
Shorts:Curious Alice (Too bad this got cut off early. I would've loved to see more)
9. Escape from the Bronx (1983)-In the early going, I actually thought this might be able to surpass Bronx Warriors (It's predecessor). Not meant to be.....Despite it's video-game conclusion. But the one thing that I did love was that if you shoot enough bullets at something (Whether it's a car, van,or helicopter) it WILL eventually explode!
10. Women Behind Bars (1975)-Even though it's very light on the sleaze compared to some of Jess Franco's other WiPs (Barbed Wire Dolls,Sadomania), I was still surprisingly into this. This just really seemed to fly by.
----------------------------------------
3rd:
11. One Million Years B.C. (1966)-First time seeing this all the way through. Pity that I couldn't spot any wardrobe malfunctions on Welch or Beswick One big highlight I liked was the animation of Harryhausen's raptor(?)
12. Corman's World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel (2011)-Pretty much what I expected. My most favorite moments were Jack's recollections (Thought I would never live to hear him talk about The Terror!) and I busted up loudly at poor Bogdonavich's "film debut".
13. The Red Headed Corpse (1972)-I went in expecting this to be a giallo but....Got an odd love story about a mannequin that comes to life(?) Tons of questions to be asked by the time this ended, but the short running time will have you quickly forgetting this.
----------------------------------------
4th:
Trailers:Hard Ticket to Hawaii,Picasso Trigger,Savage Beach
14. Horror of the Blood Monsters (1970)-We're treated to an opening of vampires attacking random victims in the dark city streets...Meanwhile, John Carradine and his fellow space-travelers have crash-landed on a prehistoric alien planet (?) Yup, sounds like yet another Al Adamson mixmashup. Some of those have actually worked (Hell's Bloody Devils) and some haven't (Mean Mother), this particular film falls into the latter.
15. The Baby (1973)-Not as crazy as I was expecting it to be, but at least the surprise ending helped elevate my rating for it.
16. Malibu Express (1985)-The boobage was definetly delivered, but where was the action? Kinda ashamed to say this, but I felt the strong urge to watch a 90's Sidaris movie afterwards.
----------------------------------------
5th:
Shorts:Smart Aleck
17. The H-Man (1958)-50's Japan gets attacked by atomic creatures that are half blob and half invisble-beast . Mediocre stuff. At least the dissolving victims were neat to look at.
18. Ticked-Off Trannies with Knives (2010)-Not as disturbing as I'd thought it would be (A good thing) and despite the first half being better than the 2nd, I was still pleased by the end. Some great crack-up lines mentioned throughout!
19. Queen of the Amazons (1947)-It's only an hour long, so there really isn't any room for complaints. I recommend checking out the last half though. Amazons living the glamourous life!
----------------------------------------
6th:
Shorts:Her Hidden Talent
20. Island of Terror (1966)-So far in this marathon, I've seen melted bodies, disentegrated bodies, and now deflated bodies! What'll be next? Yet even though I found this movie to be the best of my viewed-50's/60's sci fi films, I'm getting a little burnt out on them and taking a little break from that genre.
21. The 50 Worst Movies Ever Made (2004)-There were a few that I agreed with (Teenage Zombies,Robot/Aztec Mummy) and some that I STRONGLY disagreed with (Jack Hill films and the hatred for Blaxploitation). Had Beast From Yucca Flats been included, I would've gained some respect for the list.
22. The Invincible Armour (1977)-Things got a bit complicated with the plot and characters (How many Pei Mei-lookalikes did there need to be in this movie?) but as expected, the fight scenes save whatever problems there were.
23. Teenage Hitchhikers (1975)-Aside from all the flat chests and lame goofball humor, I surprisingly liked this a lot! Mostly because of the pacing (Just when a sequence was about to overstay it's welcome, a new scene was beginning) there was also a lot of witty dialogue throughout...Well-acted, in return, by the two lead actresses.
----------------------------------------
7th:
Trailers:All-America Girl,Lola's Mistake
24. Contamination (1980)-As I mentioned in my last post, "I've seen melted bodies, disentegrated bodies, deflated bodies"....And now...*Drumroll* Exploding bodies! What else could be left? As for this movie, I admit that things slowed down considerably all through the middle act. But I never honestly got bored with this. It could be thanks to the Goblin score, Ian McCulloch (I don't think I've ever rooted for him so much before!) and the splatter.
25. The Slams (1973)-After nabbing a hefty amount of cash & drugs, Jim Brown gets jailed on a lesser charge. While locked up, the powers inside are onto Jim about the whereabouts of the heist. Pretty good premise, but I found the results to be poor. None of the actors seem to be giving it their best and there's a definite lack of action. Hard to believe since this was directed by the same guy who gave us the explosive Truck Turner!
26. Over 18... and Ready! (1969)-Judging by the title, I was expecting a movie about a young nympho out of control. Instead it's about a (Very passive) would-be actress who gets stuck doing skin flicks. Maybe it's just because I'm biased towards the subject, but I'm just a sucker for movies about movies. And even this film, with it's wonderful z-grade filmmaking and lovably bad acting, was enough for me to give it thumbs up.
----------------------------------------
8th:
Trailers:Girl in Trouble,Teenage Tramp
27. Futureworld (1976)-Despite appearing to have a larger budget than it's previous film (Westworld), this was a largely uneventful movie. At least I can say that I've finally seen this.
28. Weekend Pass (1984)-Moderate 80's T&A comedy. Though the 2nd half fizzled out big time, the 1st half was what mostly saved this for me...Thanks in part to all the 80's L.A. scenery.
29. Massacre at Central High (1976)-Taking revenge on High School Bullies! 70's style! You can enjoy this movie more (As I did) if you can accept the fact that there are no cops or parental figures in the world where this movie takes place.
30. The Alley Tramp (1968)-Dare I say this might be one of H.G. Lewis' best made films? Also one of the few sexploitation films where the mother is hotter than the daughter.
----------------------------------------
9th:
31. The Big Bust Out (1972)-I've heard very little about this one, so I wasn't expecting much. But it ended up being one of my fav's of this challenge! Part Women-in-Prison, part Nunsploitation, part White Slavery/Abduction, and part shoot-em-up, Arabian-Adventure! And even though I appeared to have watched a cut version (IMDB lists a longer version running 92 minutes compared to the barely-80-minute version I saw) not one dull or head-scratching moment was provided----But I'd still love to see a better release of this someday. It deserves it.
----------------------------------------
10th:
32. Zone Troopers (1985)-You would think a movie showing aliens killing nazis wouldn't be so bad. Think again. Even though I didn't completely hate this, I'm still in no hurry to recommend it.
33. Shoot First... Ask Questions Later (1975)-I hate to be repeating myself, but you would think that a spaghetti western with Eli Wallach,Tomas Milan,Giuliano Gemma and Sergio Corbucci as the director wouldn't be so bad. Think once again! Now even though I knew going in that this was tongue-in-cheek, shame on me for not reminding myself just how unfunny Italian humor can get. This was the most painful hour & change that I've experienced yet.
----------------------------------------
11th:
Trailers:I Married a Savage, Zatoichi At Large
34. The Smurfs (2011)-23%
35. Human Experiments (1980)-This was more of a standard "Horrors of Prison" movie than a horror flick, but I still didn't mind it----Even though I don't know what the heck happened in the end.
36. Soul Hustler (1973)-I was skeptical about this one. Thinking it was another standard "Con-man preacher/singer" flick starring Fabian (Not a bad performance, BTW) This was actually engaging in the early going, but got flat & sappy towards the end (Fabian's love-interest is also responsible for THE worst acting I've encountered so far in this marathon) Look out for appearances by biker-movie regulars like Larry Bishop, Casey Kasem (Looking a lot like Dennis Farina!) and William Bonner.
37. Lady Snowblood 2: Love Song of Vengeance (1974)-Surprised that it took me this long to finally watch this (Forgot how lovely Kaji Meko is!) Reason for the long delay is because I had got so used to seeing lot of 70's Japanese sequels that hardly every matched the originals (Streetfighter series,Female Scorpion sequels,Executioner sequels) But I'm very pleased to report that this ended up being a fine, solid sequel.
----------------------------------------
12th:
38. She Gods of Shark Reef (1958)-Almost slept through this....Even though it was only just a little over an hour long.
39. Below the Belt (1971)-Haven't seen this in a couple years and felt like giving it a look (I was long-overdue for a Uschi Digard-sighting in this challenge anyway) This is one of the more curious, but better, films from "Bethel Buckalew". A boxing movie with no boxing...But tons of sex & skin!
----------------------------------------
13th:
40. Kung Fu Kids Break Away (1980)-I was actually looking forward to seeing little kids kickin' butt. But of the three of them, only 1 came close to looking like a martial artist (He was really an acrobat) As a result, I didn't pay much attention the rest of the movie.
41. Cavegirl (1985)-As much as I hated this movie, I would've hated it even more if it didn't have boobage (I'm forgiving like that)
42. Psychic Killer (1975)-Don't let the PG-rating scoot you away. I found this to be another one of those hard-edged PG's (ala Born Losers,Tourist Trap) Ended up liking it too.
----------------------------------------
14th:
Trailers:AMIN: The Rise and Fall (Best trailer I've seen in years ),Grave of the Vampire
43. Another Son of Sam (1977)-Apparently, the only way this movie was to recieve a legit release was to slap an eye-catching title on it. So bad, it's almost good.
44. The Devil’s Express (1976)-I'm at a loss for this one. I'm not even sure if I hated it or loved it!
----------------------------------------
15th:
45. Congolaise (1950)-Kind of a precursor to Mondo movies. Though it lacks in the shock factor it has some innocent charm here & there.
46. The Occultist (1989-God, I hate the 80's. I'm just sticking with slashers and apocalyptic movies here on out.
----------------------------------------
16th:
47. Killer Elephants (1976)-Alright, I'm in higher spirits after watching this one I expected a Eco-Terror flick (i.e,Killer Animal movie) set in Thailand, but this is really just a crime-action movie.....With the elephants as the enforcers! This also takes the cake (So far) for the craziest english dubbing heard yet.
48. The Freakmaker (1974)-This one kept on evading me for about three straight years in my (October) Horror challenge. So glad to finally see it now. A little slow in the early going, but things really picked up towards the end. It helps that I've got a serious love for horror movies that feature carnival settings.
49. Wrong Way (1972)-(Surprised it took me this long to make it to my first "WTF?" movie) This started out like a modestly ol' cheapie rape-revenge movie, but then it looks like the film/money ran out and a Complete-from-Left-Field storyline was tacked on in the 3rd act in order pad out the running time. Don't you hate it when that happens? Such a shame because this sure looked like it was on it's way of being the sleaziest movie I've watched yet for this challenge.
----------------------------------------
17th:
50. Devil's Harvest (1942)-Another one of those old drugsploitation flicks that's more about drug-selling than drug-partying (I'm more partial to the latter) This is also another one of those badly scratched-up prints that borders on being un-watchable...Especially in the early going.
51. Cecil B. DeMented (2000)-I'm glad I waited this long to see this. Had I watched it around it's release, Many of the jokes would've been lost on me. Good things come to those who wait!
52. Fairy Tales (1978)-I went in expecting this to be a sexy-musical-anthology of sorts, but was quite relieved to see that it was all put together for one story. And even though the ending sucked, it had already won me over by the time Martha Reeves appeared. This movie also has the hottest cast of babes I've seen thus far in this marathon
----------------------------------------
18th:
53. The Girls on the Beach (1965)-TCM is currently showing a marathon of these beach movies for about 2 days. And even though they're often quite painful to sit through, I'm actually willing to give a few more a look. Nothing much to say about this one except it was nice to see what Ahna Capri looked like several years before Enter The Dragon.
54. Henry's Night In (1969)-You would think that a movie about an invisible peeping-tom who humps women would have...A different title, maybe? But for what it was worth, I still didn't mind this. It really is reminiscent of the nudie-cuties that appeared earlier in the decade----But with full frontals this time.
55. The Girl from S.I.N. (1966)-Ah, so there's an "Invisible person" theme going on with this Something Weird-double feature (Included with the movie above) Looks like there was more positive feedback for "Girl/S.I.N." than "Henry", but I much perferred "Henry" over this. Girl/S.I.N. sure had some potential, but the narration and (Most especially) the library soundtrack really got annoying after awhile (Had to put some music on while I watched this)
56. Fangs of the Living Dead (1969)-Again, some good potiential here with the scenery, sets, costumes and lovely ladies. But this really needed some action.
----------------------------------------
19th:
57. Beach Ball (1965)-Quite a number of cuties in this one, but this movie ended up being focused on the guys But at least one of them was Don Edmonds.....Playing a saxaphone, no less!
58. Demonoid: Messenger of Death (1981)-Kind of the norm for a "Severed-Evil-Hand" movie. My biggest gripe was that I could barely see what was going on in the night-time sequences (One of the main problems of watching movies from youtube)
59. Tucker and Dale vs Evil (2010)-Expected more (Given the hype) but still found it entertaining.
60. The Wild,Wild World of Jayne Mansfield (1968)-Yesterday was Jayne's birthday so I felt like giving this a look. A very odd compilation (Was the ending taken from a completely different film?) but still, hardly a dull moment all throughout.
----------------------------------------
20th:
61. The Flying Serpent (1946)-This was basically a remake of The Devil Bat and a "Pre-make" of Larry Cohen's Q (Same monster) Even though this creature was much smaller than I expected, I was still impressed by the effects given it's time & budget.
62. Lips of Blood (1975)-Like a lot of other Rollin films, a slow & puzzling start, but things soon fall into place. Still far from the best I've seen from him, but his style & ideas just seem to always do it for me.
63. The Perils of Gwendoline in the Land of the Yik Yak (1984)-I remember, as a kid, I used to ALWAYS see this one sitting on the shelves of the various video stores I visited---Always thinking that it was some Romancing The Stone-ripoff...And there were many times when I had contemplated on renting it just for the heck of it. Well, good thing I didn't. Because If my folks caught me watching this (Especially during the last 40 minutes) they would've wondered how I got away with renting a porno! Not that there's any hardcore sex in this, but the skin-meter was off the charts!!! As for the movie itself, it sure was an oddity. Kind of like Big Trouble in Little China meets Zardoz meets...
----------------------------------------
21st:
64. Prehistoric Women (1950)-Surprisingly, no dinosaurs to be found here (Guess the budget came up too short) instead, this is like a battle-of-the-sexes movie. I've now realized that I've got a soft spot for these old savage blonde movies.
65. Cinderella 2000 (1977)-Aw hell, Al. You let me down I had some hope for this thinking that it could contend with that other Cinderella movie (Starring Rainbeaux Smith) or, at the very least, Space Thing. Instead this was just too tame, too flat and completely unfunny.
----------------------------------------
22nd:
Trailers:Honky, Shaft, Black Girl, Blacula, Cool Breeze
TV subjects:Eurotika-Jess Franco,E! True Hollywood Story-Al Adamson
66. Bandidos (1967)-Having been disappointed with the last several (Hell, the last dozen) spaghetti westerns that I've seen, expectations were down as usual. Though I wasn't blown away by this, it was a big step-up from some of the more forgettable ones that I checked out.
67. 200 Motels (1971)-Pretty much what I expected.....Actually, I was expecting it to be more insane.
68. Blood of the Dragon (1971)-Good opening. Slow middle. Great ending (Huge bodycount!) Also one of the better characters I've seen Jimmy Wang Yu play.
69. Tony Arzenta (1973)-Polizi starring Alain Delon. Though it never really shifts into overdrive as I would've liked, it still ends up as a damn-near solid Italo-crime/action/revenge film.
70. Dagmar's Hot Pants, Inc. (1971)-This one threw me a loop because it felt like it was made about 6 years earlier (Cinematic sexual freedom was booming by 1971, but this felt much more like an innocent nudie cutie) at least there was somewhat of a savior thanks to Diana Kjær's performance as the title character.
71. The Mutilator (1985)-I did a lot of nodding off during this...But holy crap...Those kill scenes were vicious! I'm surprised I haven't heard more about this movie in recent years just for those kill scenes alone.
72. Blind Rage (1978)-A jumbled mess of a movie. Most of it was spent on the training of 5 (Badasss) blind guys who are hired to rob a bank. But then once they're out of the picture, Fred Williamson shows up (At the 65-minute mark!!!) and is suddenly the main hero?!?! Had the movie been entirely about the blind guys, this sure would've been a much more memorable flick.
73. Just The Two of Us (1975)-Nice to see a Harry Novak title appear on Netflix-Instant! Even though this didn't pack as much skin as I'm used to seeing in his productions, I was still into this one thanks to the writing and (Especially) the acting. It was almost on a John Waters level!
----------------------------------------
23rd:
74. Mona: The Virgin Nymph (1970)-Said to be the first xxx flick to appear in theaters. I must say I was really surprised at how attractive the ladies were (For awhile there, I was beginning to think that all the breakout-hardcore stars had to look like Georgina Spelvin)
75. Muscle Beach Party (1964)-Thank GOD this is the last 60's beach movie I watch.
76. Dead-End Drive In (1986)-A pretty good start, but things came to a screeching halt once "Morning at the Drive-In" occurs.
77. Coach (1978)-Predictable snoozer. At least I got to see what Michael Biehn looked like as a blonde.
78. Chinatown Kid (1977)-Despite not being an Alexander Fu Sheng fan, I always wanted to see this (Mainly because it was rare to see a Cheng Cheh film set in modern times) The movie does a have a slow pace here and there (Even though the climax was pretty awesome) but it was just a trip seeing nearly all the Venom actors in 1970's clothing! (It even took me awhile to recognize some of them)
79. A Place Called Today (1972)-The plot of this political thriller sounded interesting. And with Don (Ginger,Abductors) Schain behind the camera, I assumed this might be very interesting. But even the action & nekkidness weren't enough to remind you how sloooooow this movie is....Although Lana Wood's nips do deserve some honorable mention
----------------------------------------
24th:
80. A Dirty Western (1975)-The good thing about this western porno was the great sound/picture quality (I'm always used to seeing these movies look like crap) and it's lovely leading lady, Barbara Bourbon. The rest of it? Meh
81. Sheba Baby (1975)-Finally got to watch this all the way through. I could see why I had difficulty completing it before because it's really a "Been there, done that" sort of thing involving Pam. But they should've just gone for a R-rating at least.
82. Hands of Steel (1986)-Not quite the futuristic-apocalyptic flick I expected, but by the time it ended, I realized that I was entertained by this! The first 20-or-so minutes are dreadful, but once the movie starts to resemble Stallone's Over The Top(!), I really started to get into it. It was also nice to see Janet Agren again
83. Women Unchained (1974)-Female convicts on the run! (With the jailbreak occuring within the first few minutes---Quite a rarity for an American WiP) Though the movie is certainly sloppy in the filmmaking department (Especially with the action scenes) You could tell that good care went into the script (The escapees are given quite a lot of character-development) and, for this viewer, this eventually paid off as I let out some audible "Aw man!"s whenever some of the girls started to bite the dust. So even though this tends to have it's spotty moments, my overall reaction to this is quite positive.
----------------------------------------
25th:
Trailers:Wake Up and Die, Professional Killer, Grand Slam, The Violent Four, La Polizia Ringrazia, Milano Caliber 9, Manhunt, Revolver
84. Wadd: The Life & Times of John C. Holmes (1998)-More comprehensive than I thought it would be....But I wonder how the NC-17 version fares...
85. The Werewolf and The Yeti (1975)-Best, and perhaps only, known for making the Video Nasties list. Though there's nothing hardly objectionable about this (Which I'm sure you already knew) and worst of all, the yeti only appears at the beginning and ending. Oh well, at least we get to see Paul Naschy fighting off undead nekkid chicks.
86. Office Love-in, White-Collar Style (1968)-It's just a bunch of seperate sex tales between office workers....Oh, and all the guys appear to be in their mid-40s and all the chicks are in their mid-20's. I hope the 2nd feature, Suburbia Confidential is a little bit better.
87. Maryjane (1968)-This was made in 1968? How come everybody in the movie looks like they're from 1962? Anyway, mildly intriguing druggie story with (Often) a snail's pace. I did have one favorite scene though: The school staff meeting. Some of the lines mentioned got big laughs out of me. I especially liked the sheriff's pronounciation of "Maury-wanna" and "Satistics".
88. Warrior Queen (1987)-There sure wasn't much of a plot here, but if you make that up by throwing in a lot of sex and violence, then I ain't got no complaints! But for real, I used to always think that 80's exploitation had been too watered down. But this movie proves a point that there still was some signs of sleazy hope still hanging on
89. Suburbia Confidential (1966)-More old guys doing younger women. But the sex managed to be a bit more steamy here. I noticed that both movies (Office Love In, being the other) had scenes with guys dressing up in women's lingerie. Director Stephen C. Apostolof obviously hung out with Ed Wood a little too much.
----------------------------------------
26th:
90. J.C. (1972)-Watched this on youtube where the sound was atrocious (And ironically, the boom mic was visible in numerous shots) but I still managed to watch this all the way through (Thank god for my extreme love for grindhouse cinema) Even though I was only able to understand about 75% of what was said in the movie, I just pretended that I was watching An American Hippie in Alabama----That's who "J.C." kept on reminding me of everytime I saw him.
91. World of the Drunken Master (1982)-Yet another semi-entertaining flick from Joseph Kuo. But I wish I could've seen more of the old drunken masters and less of their younger selves from the backstory.
92. The Cut-Throats (1969)-Wow. Where do I start with this one? Might as well start with the beginning:
-A painting of a cowboy-wrangler provides the backdrop for the opening credits.
-The romantic "Ballad of Jimmy Johnson" plays through the credits.
-The film opens with the introduction of a U.S. soldier wearing a cowboy hat. It's none other than Jimmy Johnson! And he's in WWII Germany!
-Just moments later, Jimmy Johnson is shot and killed Ooohkay...So is a new set of opening-credits set to begin?
93. The Beach Girls (1982)-I think this might be the first screwball comedy I've seen from Crown International. I certainly didn't laugh that very much, but the eye candy was what piled up the points....And a majority of it was thanks to Debra Blee
----------------------------------------
Trailers:Angels' Wild Women, The Super Weapon, In The Shadow of Kilimanjaro, Savage Streets, The One-Armed Executioner, Girls School Screamers, The House By The Cemetary, Dragon's Inferno
27th:
94. Blood Orgy of the She-Devils (1972)-Another movie with terrible audio and yet another movie from Ted Mikels that didn't live up to it's potential.
95. The Wild Ride (1960)-I didn't mind this! It's no surprise that Jack Nicholson was able to bring more of a rawness compared to his other 50's delinquent counterparts. I also liked the constantly-appearing jazz score. Nice touch.
96. The Ravager (1970)-Now we're talkin'! A deranged (And heavily-accented) Vietnam Vet goes on a killing spree by blowing up love-making couples with dynamite! Though it's really just a sex flick in disguise, I always got a soft spot for these type of flicks if they happen to bring violence to the mix. It helps that the movie has wacky narration & heavy film-print damage. Perhaps the most fun I've yet to have in this marathon!
97. Zombi 3 (1988)-Bad movie, but not as godawful as I expected. My favorite bits were the dubbing of the line-stammering professor and the black guys.
98. The Shark Hunter (1979)-Didn't expect this one to be about recovering sunken treasure. Modest storyline, it's just lacking the fun that you (Often) find in Enzo Castellari's films....Then again, any movie with tons of underwater scenes will always drag.
99. Chillerama (2011)-Favorites in order: Wadzilla,Diary,Zom-b,Werebear.
100. The Black Bunch (1973)-An integrated unit with black mercenaries (And a couple of white folks) are taken into Africa (But filmed in the hills of Los Angeles) and are out to take out a rogue commando (And to have lots of sex with the native girls along the way!)....But other plans lie ahead for the unit's corrupt leader. With that concept (Along with some minor action & adventure) I couldn't help but to like this. Again, Sex & action 70's style just seems to always do it for me.
----------------------------------------
28th:
101. Spasms (1983)-Oliver Reed and Peter Fonda battle a large telekentic snake. Very slow & bumbling start, but things finally pick up near the end when some great death scenes occur.
102. 5 Dolls for an August Moon (1970)-More of a dark comedy/mystery than the traditional giallo that I was expecting.
103. White Slaves of Chinatown (1964)-I've only seen 2 of these Olga movies and even though this one was weaker, you just can't find any other films from that era that competes with the dirtiness of Olga!
104. Deadbeat (1977)-Chris Mulkey (Who I best know for Twin Peaks) takes matter into his own hands and avenges the rape/murder of his sister. Cheap and basic, but still very watchable for exploitation freaks.
105. Sweet Savior (1971)-Troy Donahue as a Manson-like Messiah. I wasn't expecting such a loooong set-up that leads to the massacre. The great Talli Cochrane (R.I.P.) provides a major highlight with a great nude dance.
----------------------------------------
29th:
106. Cover Girl Models (1975)-Mostly a dud. Two things I liked about it were a surprise beheading and a model's quick-thinking to avoid capture.
107. The Scavengers (1969)-For a Cresse/Frost film, this actually seemed like standard, straight-forward Civil War movie....Untill the great big boobs showed up But even afterwards, the movie still kept a grueling nature going. Though it felt a little long and the conclusion wasn't as satisfactory, I still ended up liking this.
108. Four Times that Night (1972)-A romantic comedy from Bava. Maybe it's marathon-fatigue or this genre, but I didn't really pay attention to this.
----------------------------------------
30th:
109. Hi-Riders (1978)-I watched very few carsploitation movies this challenge (Heck, this might've been the first) and I thought it delivered. Didn't expect that much gunplay, but a lot of the chases & car-stunts were top notch.
110. The Hot Box (1972)-Certainly not a great film, but I liked this. Mostly because it wasn't as by-the-numbers as women-in-captivity flicks go. It's also got an abrupt and inconclusive ending, but that didn't no longer matter.
111. The Woman Hunt (1973)-It's been on my "Most-Wanted" list for a number of years. Didn't live up to expectations, yet I didn't find it a total loss. Sid Haig's awesome in this. Nearly every line of his had me busting up.
112. Prostitution Pornography USA (1971)-Mockumentary dealing with prostitution. Interesting way to end this marathon!

LAST YEAR: 48 films
THIS YEAR'S PERSONAL GOAL: 50+ films

All films are DVD format unless otherwise noted.
Bold = first-time viewing
* = wildcard selection
  1. Branded to Kill (1967) - In 1967, director Seijun Suzuki took what began life as a throwaway gangster movie for Nikkatsu and shaped it into a feverishly delirious tale of the criminal world's third-ranked assassin (played with inflated cheeks by Joe Shishido), lust, ambition and steamed rice. Nikkatsu subsequently fired Suzuki for delivering such a bizarre film to them. Initially panned by both critics and moviegoers, it gradually found a second life over the years with the help of champions like musician/composer John Zorn and indie filmmakers such as Jim Jarmusch and Quentin Tarantino. It is at the very least memorable, and perhaps that is triumph enough for Suzuki.

  2. Pistol Opera* (2001) - Thirty-four years later, Seijun Suzuki created this follow-up to Branded to Kill and shows that he's as iconoclastic as ever. This time around, the third-ranked killer is a woman known as "Stray Cat" (Makiko Esumi). In her journey to become number one, Stray Cat encounters other assassins with names like "Painless Surgeon" and "Hundred Eyes" and gains a young female fan named Sayako. Suzuki's eye for striking visuals is still as sharp as ever, but an air of inconsequence hangs over the entire film. Pistol Opera isn't so much a sequel as it is an indulgent victory lap by one of Japanese cinema's true maverick filmmakers.

  3. Female Prisoner #701: Scorpion (1972) - Meiko Kaji plays the titular female prisoner, a woman consumed with getting bloody payback from her former lover (a crooked narcotics detective) after he uses her as a pawn in a yakuza extortion scheme. In terms of content, the film is your standard women-in-prison story. It's the manner in which the content is presented which makes the film distinctive (it must have the most expressionistic shower room catfight I have seen). Even though she's surrounded by danger and degredation inside the prison, Kaji encases her character's dignity inside an impenetrable shell of quiet defiance that explodes into violent anger. The theme song was most recently featured in Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill, Vol. 2.

  4. Female Prisoner #701 Scorpion: Beast Stable (1973) - Meiko Kaji returns in this third installment of the series, which finds Scorpion on the run from the authorities. Scorpion is taken in by a prostitute who's entangled in an incestuous relationship with her brain damaged brother. Scorpion makes an attempt at living a life of normalcy, but a pimp living on the floor beneath her threatens to expose her secret. What follows is a chain of sleazy scenario after sleazy scenario as Scorpion evades the yakuza as well as the police (led by a detective whose arm was hacked off by Scorpion earlier in the film!). As exploitative as the source material seems, a strong feminist streak runs throughout the film in its portrayal of two women on society's fringes struggling to get from underneath the thumb of male oppression.

  5. Female Prisoner #701 Scorpion: Grudge Song (1973) - Even though the epilogue at the end of the third film intimated that it would be the last, Meiko Kaji plays the Scorpion for the final time under the direction of Yasuharu Hasebe rather than series veteran Shunya Ito. The film's story structure seems to be lifted from Beast Stable, which only magnifies the fact that Grudge Song brings nothing new to the table. I hope Meiko Kaji wasn't paid per word for these films. All her lines probably wouldn't fill a sheet of paper.

  6. Prison on Fire (1987) - Tony Leung Ka-fai plays Yiu, a man who is sentenced to three years in prison after shoving a young punk into the path of a bus while defending his father. Once inside, a longtime inmate named Ching (Chow Yun-fat) takes the naive Yiu under his wing. Ching plays the role of peacemaker among the rival factions inside the prison, but tensions between the gangs as well as the guards (led by the sadistic "Scarface") all come boiling to a head. After spending the majority of the runtime playing like a throwback to prison films of the '30s, the film takes a violent turn in the climax when even the cool Ching reaches his breaking point. If John Woo's working relationship with Chow Yun-fat is like Hitchcock with Cary Grant, then Chow and Prison on Fire director Ringo Lam are like De Niro and Scorsese.

  7. Fleshburn (1984) - After a Native American Vietnam War veteran (Sonny Landham) escapes from a mental asylum, he kidnaps the panel of psychologists that had him committed and strands them in the desert. The movie is in actuality a story of wilderness survival and not a slasher film as the promotional artwork may suggest. This story of man against the elements just happens to have a deranged vet taking potshots at the characters. There's an attempt to link the tragedies that befall the doctors with shamanic rituals performed by their captor, but it's not very convincing. Based on a novel by Brian Garfield (Death Wish).

  8. The Killer Likes Candy (1968) - A humdrum Eurospy film about secret agents in Venice on the trail of an assassin whose target is the king of a fictional Middle Eastern country. The action sequences are playfully done (if sloppy), but there really isn't much else to recommend.

  9. Carnival of Crime (1962) - A French architect working in Brazil (Jean-Pierre Aumont) falls under suspicion of committing foul play when his frustrated wife goes missing. What might have been a poor Hitchcockian thriller is further marred by footage inserted by Crown International to pad out the running time for television sales.

  10. Superchick (1973) - Well, I can finally say that I've seen the bare breasts of the Reagans' personal astrologer. That aside, the movie fails as a comedy and as titillating softcore. It's a bore of a film.

  11. Weekend with the Babysitter (1970) - The story so nice that George E. Carey and Tom Laughlin (directing as Don Henderson) made it twice! A year earlier, the duo made The Babysitter starring Patricia Wymer as Candy Wilson. In Weekend, Candy Wilson is played by Susan Romen. The basic premise of both movies is the same, but there's an attempt on the filmmakers' part to appear as if they have their fingers on the pulse of "today's youth." I get the feeling that teenagers would still have rolled their eyes at Carey learning to smoke weed. Romen's leaden, dead-eyed performance does no favors to young people, either.

  12. Hustler Squad (1976) - I originally watched this film for the first B-movie challenge and enjoyed it. Ever since then, my fondness for it has grown with each successive viewing. It's a messy film, the actresses are none too convincing as highly-trained assassins, but it's also got a genuine sense of fun that's hard to deny.

  13. Hard Ticket to Hawaii (1987) - Hard Ticket to Hawaii may not be Andy Sidaris' most polished work. It may not make a lick of sense. However, it is chock full of "WTF" moments that will leave your mouth hanging open in disbelief. I personally believe that Sidaris' ceaseless efforts to confound his audience's expectations in Hard Ticket is explained by the fact he really has no understanding of what the audience expects. It may not be high art, but the film is more entertaining than it has any right to be.

  14. Savage Beach (1989) - Playmates Dona Speir (March 1984) and Hope Marie Carlton (July 1985) reprise their roles as undercover agents Donna and Taryn, respectively. Fate brings the duo, a Japanese WWII survivor, the US Navy and communist revolutionaries (including notorious April 1986 Playmate Teri Weigel) together on a Pacific island with a cache of gold at stake. Also starring character actor Al Leong. Savage Beach would be Carlton's final appearance in a Sidaris film, and she gets a moment to flex her acting muscle. You've got to give credit to a director that will bring the narrative to a grinding halt in order to show women taking off their clothes or frolicking in the tide at sunset.

  15. Guns (1990) - Erik Estrada plays Juan Degas, A.K.A., "Joaquin de Diamondes," A.K.A., "The Jack of Diamonds," an international gun smuggler with a score to settle with agent Donna and her new partner Nicole (January 1984 Playmate Roberta Vasquez). As much as I enjoy Hope Marie Carlton's bubbly performances in Sidaris films, I think Vasquez is the stronger actor. The film also has the greatest final shot of any film. Also starring character actors George Kee Cheung and Danny Trejo.

  16. Do or Die (1991) - Not only does Erik Estrada reappear in Do or Die (this time he's wearing a white hat as an Air Force officer), but the film also stars Pat Morita as a Japanese crime lord. In some ways, the presence of these two fading celebrities in the same Andy Sidaris film marks a high point in his popularity (or his notoriety). There are a number of stylish softcore scenes that I daresay show Sidaris reaching for a level of sophistication unseen in his prior films. Unfortunately, the plot and the performances remain characteristically undercooked.

  17. Hot Target (1985) - The American wife (Simone Griffeth) of a British businessman (Bryan Marshall) begins a dangerous affair with a mysterious American expatriate (Steve Marachuk) in this Kiwi production. It's a serviceable erotic thriller with effective performances (especially Marachuk), and yet there's really nothing particularly groundbreaking about the story to recommend it. There is an outdoor sex scene intercut with a cricket match, so I guess there's that.

  18. Blue Money (1972) - A young filmmaker (actor-director Alain Patrick) finds himself dragged deeper and deeper into the world of porno movies. I'm a sucker for films about filmmaking. Rather than primarily concentrate on the sex in front of the camera, Patrick often focuses on what's going on just outside the frame and behind the scenes. Even though the performances are never quite up to par, the film comes off as a proto-Boogie Nights.

  19. The Young Graduates (1971) - Patricia Wymer plays Mindy, a spoiled young brat who's JUST TURNING 18 as the film opens. We know this, because she doesn't shut up about it for the first 15-20 minutes. Once she becomes of legal age, she embarks on an affair with a teacher from her high school. Fearing that she might be pregnant, she talks her best friend Sandy into joining her on a monomaniacal road trip to Big Sur while they wait for the results. Like Weekend with the Babysitter, The Young Graduates attempts to portray itself as a topical film about "today's youth." However, it's just a dressed-up version of the "juvenile delinquency" film. Except Mindy JUST TURNED 18, legally making her an adult and making her crimes harder to forgive. She owes at the very least an apology to her best friend for getting her drugged and nearly raped by a motorcycle gang. The female characters of the film are just hollow vessels for male sexual desire. At the end of the film, the girls' boyfriends are off to their bright futures while the final shot is a close-up freeze-frame of Mindy's smiling face.

Before they were famous: Bruno Kirby makes his film debut as Sandy's boyfriend

  20. Boogievision (1977) - Somewhere amid the sophomoric humor in this crappy ripoff of The Groove Tube and The Kentucky Fried Movie is a satire about filmmaking and life in L.A. Unfortunately, the satire is hobbled by absolutely terrible direction, camerawork and sound. The pre-MTV animated interstitials save the viewing experience from being a complete waste of time.

  21. My Tutor (1983) - A wealthy Yale graduate (Kevin McCarthy) hires a sexy French tutor (Caren Kaye) to ensure that his horny son (Matt Lattanzi) gets into his alma mater. However, his son has other plans and learns a few things about the birds and the bees from the tutor. It's a fairly innocuous film as far as sex comedies go, but it delivers on the skin. Also starring Russ Meyer gal-pal Kitten Natividad and B-movie scream queen Jewel Shepard.

Before they were famous: A blond Crispin Glover as Lattanzi's dorky best friend. Glover gives the most tortured reading of the line, "Mexico!" ever.

  22. Iron Angel (1964) - A group of soldiers in the Korean War go on a mission to take out an enemy gun emplacement. Along the way, they encounter an ambushed ambulance and nurse. Any drama that could be mined from this boilerplate tale of wartime heroism is drained by momentum-killing flashbacks of the G.I.s enjoying their time away from the frontlines with dancing girls.

  23. War Hunt* (1962)
  24. Zeiram (1991)
  25. Mothra (1961)
  26. Rebirth of Mothra (1996)
  27. The Thing with Two Heads (1972)
  28. Cannonball! (1976)
  29. Smokey Bites the Dust (1981)

  36. Love and Sword (1979)

Indie's Exploitation Frenzy

Goal: Fun!

Rating System
Gold ticket or 100% purely splendid fromage
I'd buy that for a dollar
Cool sh*t!
Somewhat interesting (T&A or good action)
Meh...move along
Sucked!

In addition to double and triple-features I also have a couple of special series this month that I'm including as a part of my challenge efforts.

SPECIAL SERIES #1: Playboy Playmates

In celebration of Easter this month, I'll be watching and reviewing films that feature former Playboy Playmates in major or supporting roles or films that feature actual Playboy bunnies/playmates as subjects, characters, or cameos. This will begin on Easter weekend, but I will try to squeeze in a few throughout the challenge.

SPECIAL SERIES #2: "Jail-bait"

My second special series will features films concerning young women who are below the age of sexual consent that are either depicted in sexual situations or storylines or more innocent films that may be read that way (just as you might mistake the above picture of teen Wal-Mart models as being of a sexual nature). These are typically stories of lolitas, nymphettes or the femme fatales who lure men down forbidden or dangerous paths or any films that depict the "exploitation" of young women.

April 1

01. WRESTLEMANIA XXVIII (2012) (wildcard #1) Somewhat interesting (T&A or good action) - Silver City Gloucester Cinema 16
This event has sort of delayed my official start to the challenge, but I thought I'd list it as a wildcard. It seems fitting enough as it's basically the biggest annual exploitation event that isn't actually a movie. I've seen about four WMs now and this was the least impressive. I had fun watching this with a crowd, though. CM Punk felt like the crowd favorite, but I think Undertaker vs. Triple H was the crown jewel. Some of the Divas looked nice but weren't exploited enough for me. Okay, time to get to the flicks now.

April 3

02. THE WICKER TREE (Robin Hardy, 2012) Cool sh*t! - DVD Screener
I actually enjoyed this follow-up despite it being my first selection in the "bad sequels to well-regarded films" checklist category. The acidic word-of-mouth relaxed my expectations and I had fun with this bizarre sequel. I'm a sucker for offbeat sequels (Exorcsit II; The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2) or really delayed ones by the original director (Return to Sleepaway Camp). Nice to see Christopher Lee back, despite the brevity of his cameo. I felt this one took some interesting chances, particularly in early scenes. It remained weirdly engaging even when the final act became more routine. Nobody in the cast brings the acting chops that Edward Woodward did and it lacks that ominous sense of mystery and dread of the original. But I still recommend it to anyone remotely curious.

03. KILLING FOR LOVE (Mike Kesey, 1995) Somewhat interesting (T&A or good action) - VHS-sourced download
The first of several '90s softcore thrillers I plan to check out during the challenge. In terms of copious nudity and sex it certainly delivers. Standout is the lovely Penthouse Pet Brady Ledford. Despite multiple murders apparently happening at the remote cottage location the couples in the film always have time for a little sex play. There are some great one-liners in the film which kind of escape me now as I try to recollect. One bitchy female character corrects someone's grammatical error just moments after the group found two of their copulating friends impaled with "something". The would-be splatter elements are offscreen and we just stumble upon the bodies (makeup effects are very minimal). It all makes sense in the end, sort of. Total cheese but the nudity most likely kept Cinemax-era kids happy.

April 4

04. THE VIOLENT KIND (The Butcher Brothers, 2011) I'd buy that for a dollar - DVD
This one chewed up my brain, spat it into the toilet, flushed it, and then dug it up again. And the whole ordeal felt pretty good! Deranged doesn't begin to describe this f*ked up mess of new school exploitation. I went in expecting little more than an action-packed biker flick and emerged feeling like I was channel surfing Charles Manson's nightmares. If there's a movie club in a prison filled with America's most dangerous criminals, I'd expect they'd make a feature like this. Total disregard for ANY rules and a need to cram is as many exploitable elements, and genres, as possible. Hell, The Butcher Brothers is the perfect name for those responsible for this sickly appealling mess. Tiffany Shepis fans should take note of her creepy and raunchy performance as a possessed biker chick. Joe Egender is like Giovanni Ribisi on crack (think about that for a second). Scored 17% on Rotten Tomatoes and I can't wait to read some reviews.

05. DEATH OF A CHEERLEADER (A FRIEND TO DIE FOR; William A. Graham, 1994) Cool sh*t! - DVD
Here we have a pretty entertaining MOW from 1994 based on events that occured in Orinda, California ten years earlier. What is it about cheerleaders that causes such jealousy amongst peers in the American school system? As the title tells us, a cheerleader will die. The story feels kind of pre-Lifetime Network and it wears that "educate our kids" mask of approval on its exploitative shoulders pretty confidently. When a trial Judge concludes that he's worried this tragic incident has played out in his court for mere entertainment, it sounds ironic. Although the film isn't nearly as sensationalized as the Network Amy Fisher stories I've seen (I've saved my last for this challenge) and the story doesn't have the tabloid push of characters you love to hate like Fisher or Tonya Harding of that period. I liked Kellie Martin as the troubled teen that is willing to do anything to become friends with Spelling's ultra-popular Stacy. Spelling is also fine, but I just can't buy her as Miss Thing. I know it's mean, but she's pretty homely. Seriously, why the long face Tori? When you have lovely Marley Shelton on hand as a friend to both leads, I feel this is a bit miscast even if Spelling was the selling name in those years. Terry O'Quinn turns up in a few scenes as an influential principal just a few years past his signature cult performance as The Stepfather. It would be another decade before he really makes a splash with TV audiences in Lost.

06. SOUTH BEACH ACADEMY (Joe Esposito, 1996) Somewhat interesting (T&A or good action) - DVD-r
Corey Feldman's hideous sideburns threaten to upstage him a few times but the dude looks pretty much the same in 1996 as he does today, so I'll give him some cred for that. This turkey showcases its Miami locations mostly in the delightful forms of abundantly topless and nearly bottomless beach bunnies. It's the same threadbare (pun, yup) plot we've seen in countless films about schools/camps/institutes that will be sold or closed if a game isn't won (this time it's beach volleyball). Feldman has been down wind of this kind of crap before in Meatballs 4. The Hedgehog shows up for a cameo but better laughs are earned from veteran character actor James Hong in too few scenes as the perverted villain. Lots of nice T&A here, though. LOTS. A drinking game surely exists for Corey's awful one-liners which include a Beavis and Butt-head impression during his first painful bit of dialogue. Mostly harmless fun.

07. CALIFORNIA GIGOLO (Bob Chinn, 1979) Cool sh*t! - DVD
My first full-length encounter with John Holmes. But is it more about the girth? I think this was getting toward the back end of his career when offscreen drug escapades threatened his prowess. He's pretty flaccid when it counts. I was very surprised to see the film open with Holmes following a pretty debutante onto the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway circa the same time I was on it as a kid. I guess expecting a sex scene aboard the thing was unrealistic, but it would have been fun. Holmes is featured in every sex scene except one that he passes off to bellboy Don Fernando. The women are of the very sexy and mature kind which I kind of dug. Most impressive sequence involves a female client by the name of Veri Knotty who has uncanny control of a certain part of her body. Don't want to spoil it, but her screen name can be taken two ways...quite literally. I'll be happily checking out more vintage porn during the challenge.

April 5

Roger Corman Birthday Double Feature
08. SHARKTOPUS (Declan O'Brien, 2010) Meh...move along - BD
Some movies are just better as trailers, or taglines, or titles. Corman-produced schlock features a nifty hybrid sea-beast but desperately needs more of the over-the-top sex and gore of the recent Piranha redux. The attacks are too often repetitive and uninspired and, worse still, all of the glorious bikinis stay on. The shot on video look does echo the handmade cheapies of the VHS era but it's all just too squeaky clean. SyFy stuff tends to feel like homogenized exploitation to me and while it doesn't have to be a hard R to be a fun film, it does need to try a bit harder than this. Eric Roberts is unremarkably stiff and there's nothing to really cheer for, sneer or leer at. Slipshod tripe except for maybe the creature's great "snatch and grab" of a nervous bungee jumper...but wasn't that laugh already in the trailer? Put it this way, it's no Shark Attack 3. Dead in the water.

Roger Corman Birthday Double Feature
09. WOMEN IN CAGES (Gerardo de Leon, 1971) Somewhat interesting (T&A or good action) - BD
Not sure how many WIP films I'll hit up during the challenge, but I figured I'd pop the cherry on another Roger Corman blu-ray. Pam Grier plays a wicked warden named Alabama (QT, was this your inspiration?) who likes to play with her girls in a depraved torture chamber. Brisk pace to the scuzzy proceedings here and some colorfully photographed scenes that look eye-popping in this fresh transfer to hi-def. Having heard some of the first hand experiences of this kind of exploiter in Machete Maidens Unleashed last year, the locations look particularly unfriendly for not only the onscreen characters, but for the actual cast and crew. I like the dynamic between the female prisoners. Roberta Collins is a standout as the backstabbing heroin-addicted Stoke who secretly tries to kill her newbie cellmate, Jeff. The ending is fittingly dark and abrupt ands pulls no punches with its extreme subject matter. Corman contracted de Leon, a Filipino director with a much harder edge than some of his American counterparts. Still not as sexy or sleazy as I like my WIPs, but I'm glad I watched.

10. THE RAID: REDEMPTION (Serbuan maut; Gareth Evans, 2012) Gold ticket or 100% purely splendid fromage - Empire Theatres World Exchange Cinema 1
I've been hearing the rumblings of this one since a couple of friends returned from TIFF last September. The other fan favorite Kill List didn't quite live up to the hyperbole. That is SO not the case this time. I'm the first to admit that I need to brush up on my Asian actioners because nearly every time I have one recommended to me, I end up loving it. I strongly recommend taking the time to see this one on the big screen if it's in your area. The action is staggeringly cinematic and relentlessly brutal. I saw it at a free screening tonight with a lot of people in the audience clueless as to what they were about to see. Three women in front of me left when the violence became overbearing, allowing me to focus more on the film's brilliant visuals and spectacular choreography. What has happened to the American big-screen action film? Please filmmakers, study this work. I actually felt a sense of danger and immediacy to this violence that was achieved without obnoxious shaky-cam and jump-cuts. Can't wait to own it so I can see it again!

April 6

11. NIGHTDREAMS (Stephen Sayadian AKA Rinse Dream credited as F.X. Pope, 1981) Cool sh*t! - DVD-r
Surreal porn '80s style. Of all the segments in Nightdreams that are still swimming around in my skull the morning after, it's the sequence where DePalma's Dressed to Kill poster literally comes to life that I'm most smitten with. The film is tawdry but far removed from the "ain't it cool" glibness and HD gloss of contemporary adult films sporting arthouse ambitions. I followed it up with this week's dissection panel on Mike White's outstanding movie podcast The Projection Booth which features ("Pauline Kael of Porn") Susie Bright. I'm ready for more Rinse Dream and hopefully some Andrew Blake before this challenge is out!

SPECIAL SERIES #2: "Jail-bait"
12. AMERICAN REUNION (Jon Hurwitz-Hayden Schlossberg, 2012) Somewhat interesting (T&A or good action) Silvercity Gloucester Cinema
I'm calling this sexploitation and a "bad sequel sequel to a well-regarded film" and I don't care what the critics are smoking. This is lowbrow stuff and most of the pranks and toilet humor is more like something out of King Frat than Porky's. That's not to say there weren't enjoyable elments; stuff is still funny and well-staged by the team behind the Harold and Kumar films (John Cho and Neil Patrick Harris show up and feel like bigger stars than the headlining cast). This one was more nourishing than the wedding film and Chris Klein has returned from his awesome career as an action star. I'm not totally mocking him because the guy's like a guilty pleasure all on his own and I really do have to add that Street Fighter flick to my line-up. This Pie doesn't feature too much hair "pie" except for some choice nudity by the story's jailbait character played excitedly by Ali Cobrin (I'm happy to learn that she's in season 1 of Look - the Showtime voyeurism series). Like The Fast and the Furious films it was bittersweet seeing everyone back together again in their desperate bid to keep this series going. I actually preferred some of the sleazier DTV entries.

SPECIAL SERIES #1: Playboy Playmates
13. BOUNDARIES (Erotic Boundaries; Mike Sedan, 1997) I'd buy that for a dollar - DVD-r
Featured Playmate: Kathy Shower
Playboy Playmate of the Month May 1985
Playboy Playmate of the Year 1986
Measurements: 35-24-35

Kathy is a decent actress for a former Playmate and she is plenty naked here, however, I felt a much stronger erotic charge from her co-star and onscreen rival played by sexy Carolyn Renee Smith. Smith is tantalizing as a femme fatale who strips to her thong atop an office desk in one of several attempts to seduce her boss. Va-va-voom!

SPECIAL SERIES #1: Playboy Playmates
14. BOAT TRIP (Mort Nathan, 2003) Meh...move along - Netflix Canada
Featured Playmates:
Victoria Silvstedt
Playboy Playmate of the Month December 1996
Playboy Playmate of the Year 1997
Measurements: 35 1/2-25-36 1/2
Jami Ferrell
Playboy Playmate of the Month January 1997
Playboy (Germany): Playmate of the Month January 1997
Measurements: 36-22-35
Natalia Sokolova
Playboy Playmate of the Month April 1999
Measurements: 34D-22½-34½

No Playmate can save this sinking ship. Not even three of them can. Hell those girls get less combined screen time than Roger Moore's hairspray. The hottest performance in Boat Trip comes from Puerto-Rican Rosalyen Sanchez playing Razzie nominee Cuba Gooding, Jr.'s comely lust interest. Rather than wasting your time with this doomed cruise, just click here to check out Sanchez's "show me the money" moment as she rehearses fellatio on one lucky banana:

15. THE BLOB (Irvin S. Yeaworth Jr., 1958) Cool sh*t! -Netflix Canada
Happy to finally get a token sci-fi flick in. The remake of this is one of my favorite horror films of the 1980s and I was happy to see the original was such a fun film. Always enjoy the innocence of the period and the ladies were pretty fetching in their tight little sweaters. The blob itself was a gooey freaky things and it creeped and crawled its way into my B-movie lovin' heart. Steve McQeeun already looked to be in his thirties here and he has a nice drag race moment that foreshadows his iconic "behind-the-wheel" roles.

April 10

SPECIAL SERIES #2: "Jail-bait"
16. NEW WAVE HOOKERS (Gregory Hippolyte Brown credited as Gregory Dark, 1986) I'd buy that for a dollar -DVD-r
It's only taken me 27 years to finally see Greg Dark's "New Wave Hookers". I totally had The Plugz track "Electrify Me" on the brain the morning after. I need to see "Repo Man" again for their musical contributions alone. If that's what you call Mexi-punk then I'm down with it...hell so was Bob Dylan. The film itself holds up really well and some of the male cast members are really funny. Was surprised as hell to learn that Jack Baker was star of a short-lived children's show called Wonderbug and had appeared in many mainstream TV shows and films before he moved into porn. Sadly, he died in 1994 of bladder cancer. If you're wondering why I've included this in my "jail-bait" version you might have to do a little research of your own. I saw the original version before a certain notorious porn icon had to have her scenes excised due to a slight legal matter. She's red hot in this, if you know what I'm talking about! She's also on the safe list but this is an UNSAFE appearance. Still not sure?...see my checklist.

April 11

17. CARNAL CRIMES (Gregory Hippolyte Brown as Alexander Hippolyte, 1991) I'd buy that for a dollar -DVD-r
This wasn't even planned but by coincidence I followed up New Wave Hookers with another Greg Dark AKA Greg Hippolyte film. This one among his first of several erotic thrillers and featuring the pulchritudinous young Linda Carol whose figure is made for designer lingerie. Enjoyably undemanding yet fun little plot. There's an unexpected cameo by the reliably cool and slickly sleazy Danny Trejo as an employee at an adult movie theatre where Hippolyte appears to be quoting his darker days while creating one of the film's more surreal moments. There's also a kinky photo shoot that mixes sex and a little blood on the bedsheets. This one is worthy.

SPECIAL SERIES #2: "Jail-bait"
18. COMMAND PERFORMANCE (Dolph Lundgren, 2010) Somewhat interesting (T&A or good action) -Netflix Canada
This mildly engaging DTV actioner would have worked better twenty years ago. It may have even managed a theatrical release back then and its star may have been more believable as the drummer of a rock band. Still, Dolph Lundgren looks pretty great for his age...maybe not enough to draw fire from the loins of lolita-ish pop diva Venus who pants and drools over Dolph even though he's a pushing sixty band member who could pass for her Dad and she's apparently popular enough to earn a command performance for the Russian president's daughters. Venus' sexy routines and outfits are mimicked by the President's spoiled pre-teens who and will, along with their idol Venus, become the "damsels in distress". It's not particularly sleazy, but there is an attempted rape on one of the young girls (more jail-bait) that is cut short but by one of several ultra-violent kills. Lots of bullets and CG blood splatter as Dolph stages his variation on the old Die Hardformula. It's okay for a Netflix quickie.

April 12

19. GOD BLESS AMERICA (Bobcat Goldthwait, 2012) - Meh...move along -Download
Since this caused a stir at last year's Midnight Madness at TIFF I've been pumped to check this one out. I'm a huge fan of Bobcat the auteur...yes I now consider the comedian who played the annoying Zed from the Police Academy sequels an auteur. His previous films as writer/director are all worth your time:Shakes the Clown; Sleeping Dogs Lie; World's Greatest Dad. Unfortunately I was quite underwhelmed. It started off as great satire, with some amusing riffs on all that is tacky about reality TV and the TMZ zeitgeis but later became repetitive and didn't really take the concept in bold enough directions to maintain the snarky contempt set-up in early scenes. I really liked those first bits that creatively showcased Joel Murray's misanthropic dark fantasies and the amusing rant with the co-worker that helped fuel his rage. Most of the film's ideas were summed up in those early bits. I think this is a film that Goldthwait needed to make but it's probably his weakest. The leads weren't convincing and were no more likable than most of their victims. It became less cinematic as it went along, too, after some technically inspired work. I just expected more from the Bobcat.

Re: List Thread-Third Annual Drive-In/Exploitation/B-Movie Challenge Mar 31-Apr 30 20

* = First time viewing
April 1-9 - Nothing because I was on vacation and the movies I did see were not B movies.

April 10
1. After School Special: Pssst! Hammerman's After You
AKA The 18th Emergency* - DOESN'T COUNT - I realized that this is NOT a Made for TV movie but rather an hour long episode of a series.

April 11
1. The Jerk
(1979) Steve Martin's first film - still holds up.

April 12
2. Tilt
(1979) Brooke shields stars as a pinball wizard who hooks up with a country singer/con man to become pinball hustlers. Yes you read that right, the hustle pinball games. Only of interest if you love pinball.

April 13
3. The Incredible Hulk Returns
(1988) Made for TV movie made after The Incredible Hulk Series ended. In this one he teams ups with the Mighty Thor, but since they try to make it as less comic-booky as possible Thor wears cheesy viking armor instead of his comic book costume. Lou Ferrigno looks more massive than he ever did in the series.

April 14
4. Senso '45 AKA Black Angel
* (2002) Tinto Brass directs this tale of a wealthy Italian woman (the stunning Anna Galiena) and her torrid sex affair with a young SS officer during World War II. I hasten to call this a B movie since it is so well made, costumes, sets and cinematography speak of a class production. However, there is plenty of nudity as well as a Nazi-sploitation theme to put this firmly into B movie territory.

April 15
5. Santo en el Tesoro de Drácula AKA El Vampiro y el Sexo
* (1968) Near legendary Santo film that was thought lost (or perhaps to not exist at all) because it features nudity - something very unbecoming of family friendly Santo films.

April 16
6. The Trial of the Incredible Hulk
(1989) Another made for TV movie. This time The Hulk teams up with Daredevil (Rex Smith) to bring down The Kingpin (John Rhys-Davies). As in The Incredible Hulk Returns where Thor was the guest hero, the comic book trappings are kept to a minimum so daredevil wears an all black cat burglar outfit and the Kingpin isn't bald.

April 17
7. Car Wash
(1976) Entertaining comedy about a group of employees at a car wash. The DVD box would have you believe that it stars Ricard Pryor and George Carlin but they only have cameo appearances.

April 18
8. Shadow of the Hawk
* (1976) Jan Michael Vincent and Marilyn Hasset star in this tale of a man who gets in touch with his Native American ancestors in order to ward off evil spirits. Not bad.

April 19
9. Meridian
(1990) There's a bit of Hammer films-like vibe in this movie directed by Charles Band and starring the gorgeous Sherilyn Fenn. The tale tells of a young woman who inherits an Italian castle and gets involved with a troupe of gypsy performers, one of which is a werewolf-like creature. Only the nudity by Miss Fenn makes this one interesting as there's not much else to the story. The European locations do give it an extra touch, however.

April 20
10. The Young Graduates
* (1971) The movie itself is total fluff but it has more value as a window into a bygone era - the 1970s and the way teenagers behaved back then. I wish I was there now. In the "Before they were (semi) famous" department we have Bruno Kirby and Dennis Christopher.

April 21
11. Snowbound: The Jim and Jennifer Stolpa Story
* (1994) Made for TV movie recounting the real life ordeal of a couple and their baby as they become snowbound en route to a family gathering. Pretty suspenseful, I must say.

April 22
12. Underworld: Rise of the Lycans
(2009) Kate Benckinsale-less third entry in the series. This time it's a prequel and the action is set in some undefined middle ages.

April 23 - Nothing
April 24
13. Dark Tide
* (2012) It stars Halle Berry, but trust me, this is very much a B movie. Halle plays a retired shark expert who is lured back into diving with sharks when a millionaire offers her a lot of money to have the thrill of diving with great white sharks outside the cage.

April 25
14. Super
* (2011) Starts out as a comedy and then takes a turn towards the surreal and violent at the end of the movie. An excellent movie about what would happen if an ordinary gouy decided to become a superhero. Sounds like Kick-Ass you say? Indeed it does but I dare say this one is better. Excellent performances from Rainn Wilson and Ellen Page.

April 26 - Nothing
April 27
15. Whip It
* (2010) Ellen Page stars as a teenager that joins a roller derby team in this drama/comedy directed by Drew Barrymore who also stars in a supporting role. Juliette Lewis also stars as one of the tough as nails roller girls.

April 28
16. Enter the Dragon
(1973) Bruce Lee's legendary film still hold up. I was surprised how "big budget" it looks, great sets costumes and a ton of extras.

April 29
17. Enter the Dragon - Special features
* Spread over discs 1 and 2 of the Special Edition DVD, these documentaries are longer than the movie itself so I count it as an entry.
18. The Specialist* (1975) Not to be confused with the 90's Silvester Stallone movie of the same name. This one stars Adam West and Enter the Dragon's Ahna Capri in a legal drama about a lawyer who is seduced by one of the jurors in order to declare a mistrial.
19. Razorback (1984) A giant boar kills people in the Australian outback. It's Jaws but with tusks.
20. Two Days in Paris* (2007) Julie Delpy writes, stars and directs this dialogue-heavy film very much in the Woody Allen vein but not nearly as charming. If you thought the French were annoying before, this film will only strengthen that concept.

April 30
21. Convoy
(1978) This was directed by Sam Peckinpah and has an all-star cast (Kris Kristofferson, Ali McGraw, Ernest Borgnine) but it's B-Movie all the way. A classic.
22. Santo Contra la Magia Negra (1973) Santo travels to Haiti to stop an evil voodoo priestess with plans to turn the whole island into zombies. This film greatly benefits from being shot on location in Haiti.

Re: List Thread-Third Annual Drive-In/Exploitation/B-Movie Challenge Mar 31-Apr 30 20

I'm dreadful at keeping these updated, but I figured I would reserve a spot, and try to watch a few. No way I'll get anywhere near 100, but that wouldn't be my goal. Let's see if I can keep this updated.

Personal Goals:
  • 15 Entries (0/15)
  • 10 of my entries must be first-time viewings (0/10)
  • I will include a 100-word-or-less mini-review of each entry
  • I will include IMDB links to each entry
  • Though I will include the Optional Checklist in my post, I do not intend to complete it, just as many as possible

Key:
☼ - First Time Viewing
BD - Blu-ray Disc
DVD
NIQ - Netflix Instant Queue
THR - In Theatres
OTH - Other

Entries:

Date:
01. ☼Title -- Format -- dir. Director -- YEAR -- "Rating" -- XXX minutes --
Why is it a B-movie?
X out of 4 stars

Re: List Thread-Third Annual Drive-In/Exploitation/B-Movie Challenge Mar 31-Apr 30 20

This is my first time trying the challenge. My goal is 100 but it will be difficult. I'm limited to Netflix and whatever my local Blockbuster might have in stock. I live out in the boonies to I can't run to a local bestbuy or any other place to pick up something to see.

I'm only watching movies that I haven't seen before.

March 31st-
#1: Street Law (1974) (netflix)
#2: Beast With a Gun (1977) (netflix)
April 3rd-
#3: Battle of El Alamain (1969) (netflix)
April 4th-
#4: Caged Heat (1974) (netflix)
#5: The Mercenary (1968) (netflix)
#6: The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1919) (netflix)
#7: The Last Man on Earth (1964) (netflix)
April 5th-
#8: Vanishing Point (1971) (BluRay)
#9: Duck, You Sucker! (1971) (DVD)
April 6th-
#10: Cemetery Man (1994) (DVD)
#11: The Dead (2011) (DVD)
April 7th-
#12: Hellacious Acres: The Case of John Glass (2011) (DVD)
April 9th-
#13: Lady Snowblood (1973) (DVD)
April 10th-
#14: Predators (2010) (cable-HBO) (don't know if this counts but what the heck)
April 11th-
#15: Django (1966) (DVD)

Re: List Thread-Third Annual Drive-In/Exploitation/B-Movie Challenge Mar 31-Apr 30 20

Undeadcow's 2012 Drive-in / Exploitation B-Movie Challenge

April 1
1. Basket Case (1982, 91 minutes) - Basket Case is a spirited classic. The blu-ray looks good but retains a gritty look.[blu-ray, personal collection]

April 2
2. The Baby (1973, 85 minutes) - The Baby blew me away, much better than I thought it would be. I don't want to spoil anything but I recommend it.[online streaming, Netflix]

April 3
3. Ninja Cheerleaders (2008, 81 minutes) - Takes a sarcastic premise ripe with opportunity for sexuality or stylized violence and pisses it away with poor acting segments that feature a disappointing lack of both ninjas and cheerleaders. Only the comedically wooden George Takai provides any redeption. [online streaming, Netflix]

April 4
4. Flavia the Heretic (1974, 96 minutes) - Much slower paced that I expected but has some interesting psychological threads.[DVD, personal collection]

April 5
5. The Brain That Wouldn't Die (1962, 82 minutes) - An often overlooked horror classic, I love the attempt at social commentary and the cheesy 60s sexualization, great ending.[DVD, personal collection]
6. Humanoids From the Deep (1980, 80 minutes) - Enjoyed this one much better than I thought I would, great creature flick.[Blu-ray, personal collection]

April 6
7. Shiver of the Vampire (1971, 95 minutes) - I think I like Shiver of the Vampire more each time I watch it, the slow paced imagery clashing with silly 70s goofball vampires has some great imagery.[Blu-ray, personal collection]
8. Thriller: A Cruel Picture (1974, 104 minutes) - A mean spirited picture that drags you into one eye's torment making her artfully filmed struggle for revenge more gratifying. I love the over the top slow motion; style is great with good cinematography and narrative structure that doesn't just shamelessly exploit but rubs your nose in the human misery (which is why I prefer the x-rated cut). [DVD, personal collection]
9. Switchblade Sisters (1975, 91 minutes) - Ended up being much more dramatic than what Netflix calls a "lurid cult classic" but good pacing and some grandly staged gang wars.[Online streaming, Netflix]

April 7
10. Revenge of the Ninja (1983, 90 minutes) - A fun 80s action movie that ended up being much better than I thought it would be, really felt vintage.[Online streaming, Netflix]
11. Dirty Mary Crazy Larry (1974, 93 minutes) - amazing film that's entirely a high energy car chase, I heard of it many times but seeing it for the first time floored me.[Online streaming, Netflix]
12. The Exterminator (1980, 101 minutes) - always struck me as too disjointed but has some nice grittiness and cheap emotional jabs.[Blu-ray, personal collection]

April 9
13. Class of 1984 (19xx, xx minutes) - good cat/mouse tension with cheesy social message paired with unexpected violence. [Online streaming, Netflix]

April 14
14. Enter the Dragon (19xx, xx minutes) - surprising good martial arts based spy movie with nice action flow and minimal goofiness; after watching Enter the Dragon it made me wonder why I have overlooked martial arts films so long.[Online streaming, Netflix]

April 15
15. Ong Bok (19xx, xx minutes) - Odd attempts at levity but had a good chase feel to it with nice energy.[Online streaming, Netflix]
16. Ong Bok 2 (19xx, xx minutes) - Odd fantasy follow-up to the original where the main character seems too unexpectedly skills from birth. [Online streaming, Netflix]

April 22
17. Billie Jack (19xx, xx minutes) - .[Online streaming, Netflix]
18. Angel (19xx, xx minutes) - Mediocre film that didn't live up to the hype or premise; but enjoyable.[DVD, personal collection]

April 23
19. El Topo (19xx, xx minutes) - Good imagery with seemingly meaningful imagery/content that will take multiple viewings and some effort to sink in.[DVD, personal collection]

April 25
20. Conan the Barbarian (19xx, xx minutes) - When I first saw the Conan movies as a kid they seemed boring but this time around it felt more lively. The finale seems anti-climatic.[BluRay, personal collection]
21. Conan the Destroyer (19xx, xx minutes) - Much weaker than the first Conan but the ending battle is top notch.[BluRay, personal collection]

April 28
22. I Spit On Your Grave (201x, xx minutes) - The remake was much better than it could have been with a satisfying and very brutal revenge frenzy but I felt like it was missing some of the subtle social commentary of the first.[BluRay, personal collection]
