Re: Do you still have the first DVD you ever purchased?
My first DVD was K-9: P.I. (had the other 2 on VHS) and I've still got it even though I recently bought the K-9 franchise pack for the rest of the series. I don't recall where I bought it or how much I spent though.

I keep these for nostalgia sake, but only watch the Blu-ray versions these days.
I remember buying Lost in Space on the day it was released (October 6th, 1998) in its snapper case, which seemed pretty elegant for its time. I grabbed TRON on the same day.

My first was Highlander 10th Anniversary Director's Cut. I haven't watched in about a year, but I still have it. Another early one is Ghostbusters. I'd be an idiot to get the blu-ray. The original dvd has the Mystery Science-style commentary where you can see the people talking in shadow. The blu-ray doesn't have that.

Yes! "Apocalypse Now" and I also now have all of the follow-ups to it - "Apocalypse Now - Redux", "Apocalypse Now: The Complete Dossier" and "Hearts of Darkness". I still like the original best. Don't even know if it's out on Blu, but I don't have a BD Player, so it's irrelevant.

No...I like to buy sell and trade DVDs as quickly as possible.
I prefer it to making all the back and forth trips for rentals.
I still have most of my VHS tapes. I recently bought to used VCR players
at $5 each, to make sure I could keep watching my VHS movies for years.
There are tons of titles I rarely come across on DVD.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas... I did upgrade it to the Criterion version but kept the original copy as a loaner for friends. At some point I plan on picking up the Blu-ray Criterion version but haven't caught it on sale yet.

First Two Movies were Spiderman 2 & Star Wars: Attack of the Clones, still have em!
First TV Series on DVD was the Gerry Anderson "Supermarionation" Series Thunderbirds, which, back in 1965 was the first Science Fiction Series I ever saw. (Thank You President Johnson for Pre-Empting Bozo right after I got home from School). With everything on Detroit-Area TV Preempted for his News Conference, I switched over to the Station out of Windsor, Ontario, and what did my eyes see? Puppets operating fancy Gadgets and flying Spaceships! You know something? I LIKE!
Yup, still have that series on DVD Too, on the day it was first released I was at Best Buy, seeing an Employee placing sets on the shelf I went over and snatched the next one out of his hands and BEELINED for the Checkout!

Still have the first four I bought together: Casablanca (MGM), LA Confidential (snapper), Seven Samurai (Criterion), and Ran (terrible Fox Lorber version, and the only one I never watched--I later got the Fox Lorber Masterworks edition and the Studio Canal BD). I also still have the Lost in Space, Devil's Advocate, and whatever else I got free with the player.
EDIT: Missed the subquestion: In addition to Ran, I've upgraded Casablanca twice (2D SE, BD UCE), LA Confidential twice (2D SE, BD), and Seven Samurai (3D, still holding out on the BD).

I still have my first DVD, Jeremiah Johnson. An upgrade to bluray is coming sometime. But I may just keep the DVD because it was the first one that I ever bought.

Can't remember precisely, but I think my first two titles were Halloween II (goodtimes) and Fletch. And, yes, I've upgraded both to blu-ray, so I don't have them any more...

I can't remember what my first DVD was for sure to be honest. I think it was either The Simpsons: The Complete First Season or Star Trek: The Motion Picture (Director's Edition). I still own both of them.

My first DVD was The Mask (Jim Carrey) in September 1997. It was non-anamorphic widescreen so I have replaced it with the blu-ray. I didn't realize how many non-anamorphic widescreen DVDs I bought until I got my first widescreen HDTV in 2001.
My first new release DVD that I bought on release day was Austin Powers in October 1997 and I still own it.

I even recall being charged the price of the lesser bare bones addition because I mistakenly thought I was being overcharged, the Wal-mart cashier went to check, saw the same price and adjusted accordingly. And yes, I still have it.

Arguably the greatest series ever created. Nice choice!

Main question: Yup
Sub-question: Honestly haven't thought about it.

Re: Do you still have the first DVD you ever purchased?
I remember buying some random titles in a store when I got my first player. I can't remember them all, but I know Yellow Submarine and High Fidelity were in the bunch, and I still have those.
As for upgrading, I still don't have a BR player other than my laptop, but once I do get one, these two probably won't be high priorities to upgrade.

Re: Do you still have the first DVD you ever purchased?
I think I do. For sure I have the title, if not the actual disc. I honestly don't remember which was my very first DVD, but it may have been Buffy season 1. If it was, it's still the same DVD. I've only upgraded on a handful of DVDs and those are my absolute favorites and I don't get rid of something unless I have another copy. But since they are my favorites, it's possible that I got rid of the original disc as I would have been more likely to buy those first.
