1st Annual DVDTalk Action/Adventure/Crime/Mystery Challenge List Thread

Dates: Dusk on February 29th to dawn on April 1st (What you watch from midnight on March 30th to dawn on April 1st could also count for the annual April B-Movie/Exploitation Challenge, so plan your choices accordingly if desired.)

Rules: Sorta like all the other Challenges but as lenient as you can imagine. Everything counts as one; film, TV episode, short. Unofficial goal of hitting 100, but don't ignore real life to hit it. Everyone who shows up in either thread is an equal "winner". Anything listed on IMDB with a genre of action, adventure, or crime (or anything that even vaguely could be argued as should be listed as such) counts.

- A gang takes revenge on a apartment complex after having the cops kick them out one floor at a time. i enjoyed this movie and got a kick how the gang went one apartment at a time and took theyre time knowing they couldnt reach the cops. 2.5 broomstick used in the worse possible ways out of 5
5. Assault on Precinct 13 -NWI
- I have seen the remake and actually liked it but this was the first time viewing of the original and I actually really liked it surprisingly enough as im not a fan of most of Carpenter's work. 2.5 reasons to never trust the ice cream man out of 5
6. Machine Girl - dvd
- the movie that got my interest in all the nonsense known as what I call Jsplat. while a young girl take vengeance on the yakuza family that killed her baby brother she looses an arm and gets healed and literally gets armed with a tool of destruction. 4 drill bras out of 5
7. The Incredible Hulk - DVD
- I wont go into too much talk here, because most of prolly seen this or know what its about. I did enjoy this much more then the previous hulk movie despite me not really liking norton as banner. 3 pairs of purple spandex pants out of 5
8. Yakuza Weapon -DVD
- Blind bought this at Walmart based on being released on Sushi Typhoon. The Son of a Yakuza returned home after hearing about the death of his father and while being left for dead himself he gets transformed into the ultimate weapon of nonsense by the japanese gov. While not my favorite movie of this kind it had some cool scenes and enjoyed watching it. 3 vagina missiles out of 5

1. Young Sherlock Holmes (1985) Decades before the Robert Downey Jr movies made Holmes into an action hero, this movie did it first. Very fun action adventure that recounts Holmes' and Watson's first meeting as teenagers and their first case uncovering a series of murders disguised as suicides by an evil Egyptian cult.
2. Charlie's Angels (1978) Season 2, The jade trap Dirk Benedict (Starbuck in Battlestar Galactica) stars.
3. Charlie's Angels (1978) Season 2, Angels on the run A very young Craig T. Nelson appears in a minor role.

March 2
4. Domino (2005) Keira Knightley talks trash, shoots guns and smokes a lot of cigarettes in this Tony Scott-helmed action movie. Supposedly based on a true story. Ridiculous dialogue and MTV-style editing make this one a headache to watch.

March 3
5. Danny the Dog AKA Unleashed (2005) A bit more of acting is required of Jet Li in this flick but since he's flanked by Morgan Freeman and Bob Hoskins his limited acting skills are magnified. Li plays a man who has been trained since an early age to be nothing but an attack dog for the mob. He escapes them and is befriended by a blind man (Freeman) and his daughter who teach him to be human again. There's still plenty of fight scenes, but these seem a bit added on just to fill a quota. There's even the by now tired cliché of illegal underground fighting matches.

12. L'Immortel* (2010) French revenge film starring Jean reno where he plays a retired assassin who is left for dead after being riddled with bullets by his former mob buddies. After recovering, he seeks to kill them off one by one.
13. Making The Connection: The Untold Stories* (Bonus feature on disc 2 of The French Connection) Retrospective on the making of this classic films hosted by Sonny Grosso, one of the real cops involved in the true case.

March 7
14. La Chambre des Morts (2007) A very Silence of the Lambs vibe permeates this French thriller about a young female detective investigating the deaths of young girls. The detective in question (Melanie Laurent) even has a copy of the novel in her home. The film is nowhere near as good as The Silence of the Lambs but a decent thriller nonetheless.
15. Star Wars, Episode 1: The Phantom Menace in 3D (1999/3D version 2012) Yes, this is more fitting for the SF/Fantasy Challenge but it has enough action and adventure to qualify here. And yes, Jar Jar Binks sucks twice as bad in 3D.

17. The Poseidon Adventure (1972) An all-star cast and incredible performances make this film perhaps the BEST disaster movie of all time. Gene Hackman plays a headstrong preacher that guides a small group of survivors through a capsized ocean vessel. Great adventure and a terrific story.

The movie starts with a slow burn but picks up the pace later on and becomes truly engrossing. The performances of Watts and Penn are a standout.

Pre-Dusk
01. World Without End (1956)
Earth's first space ship is thrown hundreds of years into the future by a strange force and crashes on a planet full of terrifying creatures. A rarely seen favorite when I was a kid this still holds up for me. Some of the effects are just plain poor and most of the story is pretty standard but a decent script and sincere acting make this worth seeing. Recommended, especially for fans of 50's SF movies.
Post-Dusk
02. Transporter 2 (2005)*
A wild ride from start to finish with car chases in between martial arts and some gun play. A few bits are too fantastic and almost pull you out of the story but they pass soon enough. None of the action scenes goes on too long and the movie is just about the right length. Acting and script not the best but adequate for this type of film. Recommended.

03. The Black Falcon (1967)* R3 DVD
A detective working for an international organization is assigned to track down the head of the Black Falcon criminal organization. He tries to get close to the leader's daughter who had just returned from school in Paris. There is much more James Bond than gritty crime drama in this Shaw Brothers movie, including gadgets, sports cars, and beautiful women. The gang has several brutal sub-chiefs including one very slinky, very beautiful and very deadly woman. The action sometimes lacks energy but there are some nice plot twists and one set could almost be right out of a horror movie. Pretty average for a Bond knockoff but enjoyable enough to watch again someday.

Visiting a friend and he just got the first DVD from S2 in the mail. These are the first Veronica Mars shows I've seen. Luckily my host was able to fill me in on the rather complicated relationships from S1. I found these enjoyable but not super compelling. My friend said he thought the S1 shows were better. I simply could not believe these "kids" are in high school though. I can easily negotiate with shows like Buffy and Glee to accept the high school ages of their stars but just couldn't do it for VM. Still, not a deal breaker and I do plan to check out the first season at some point.
08. Grimm (2012) S1E13: "Three Coins in a Fuchsbau"*
First Grimm I've seen and it was much better than I thought it would be. Again, my host could provide a little background (much less needed than for VM) to get me going. This is a supernatural cop show and this episode was about a theft and murder involving three gold coins and also revealed some interesting information about the mythology of the show. I will be back for more.

09. Lethal Weapon (1987)* Director's Cut (4 Film Favorites - Lethal Weapon)
Two cops with radically different personalities must work together to solve a murder and more. Very well paced with lots of breathing room between the action scenes which are also well directed. Only the three part action finale seems to overstay its welcome a bit but that's probably just me. Good script and acting makes this highly recommended.

10. Pirates of Blood River (1962)* (Icons of Adventure)
A young man is exiled from a village in the West Indies founded by Huguenots and sent to a penal colony. After escaping, he runs into a band of pirates who trick him into leading them to his village. A good pirate story but don't expect to see any seagoing action. The only sailing ships are under the opening credits and in one brief establishing shot. There are well done action sequences as the pirates and villagers attack and counterattack and a nice battle for a raft. And there are piranhas! If only they hadn't made Christopher Lee use that silly French accent. Good for a weekend afternoon.

11. Robin Hood (1922)* streaming youtube
Interesting take on Robin Hood starring Douglas Fairbanks spends the first half of the movie in pre-Sherwood Forest days showing part of the trip to the Holy Land and Prince John's plotting to take over when Richard leaves. Once Robin and his band appear, the pace picks up with the Merry Men frolicking all over the place. The action sequences with Fairbanks are excellent and I wish there had been more. The large scale battle scenes and crowd scenes in general are also impressive. Sam De Grasse as Prince John was especially good as was Alan Hale as Little John. Hale played the same role in the Errol Flynn version. Worth seeing.

12. Lone Wolf and Cub: Sword of Vengeance (1972)*
The Shogun's official executioner is framed by a rival clan and his wife is killed. Instead of dying himself he flees with his infant son and becomes a wandering assassin. They become known as Lone Wolf and Cub. Very good samurai film with some nudity and lots of bloody violence. Some of the gore effects are dated but that didn't affect my enjoyment. I've read some of the manga and the fillm captures the feeling of the comic very nicely for me. First film of the series. Recommended.

Ex-cavalry man John Carter suddenly finds himself on Mars. Adventures follow. From what I can recall of the novels, this is a pretty faithful adaption of the Mars stories, especially in the overall feel of Barsoom. While the designs are certainly not "my" Barsoom (which was heavily influence by the paperback cover art of the day) they do work very well and grabbed me quickly. The movie is too long and there are a few things I would have shortened or cut but there were only one or two sequences I felt went on a bit too long. There were also a few plot inconsistencies especially concerning the villains but all in all a fun movie. Recommended.
14. Tim Tyler's Luck (1937) Chapter 1: "Jungle Pirates"
Introducing Spider Webb and his band of jungle cutthroats; Tim Tyler a young man searching the African jungles for his missing father, the world's expert on gorillas; Lora Graham who is searching for Spider Webb who she thinks framed her brother for a diamond theft; The Jungle Cruiser an armored vehicle designed for jungle travel by Tim's father, now under the control of Spider Webb; and The Ivory Patrol a government police force used to track down ivory smugglers and to keep the natives in line. Skillful use of stock jungle footage does a good job setting the stage for this serial.

15. Gatchaman (1974) Episode 105: "Earth's Destruction! 0002"*
After years of on and off viewing, I finally finished this show. A good conclusion to a show I really enjoyed. I love the concept of a "Science Ninja Team". I don't know how well this show would do in a marathon since many of the episodes have similar story lines but there are also character centered shows that surprised me a bit.
16. Ultraman (1966) Episode 24: "The Underwater Science Base"*
The first series featuring an Ultraman. For me, the best part of these shows are up until Ultraman appears. Once he shows up things are usually pretty much cut and dried but during the set up lots of strange and eerie things can happen. So far the monsters have been pretty cool too.
17. Kamen Rider V3 (1973) Episode 7: "The Fury of Rider V3's Special Training"*
In this show the monsters and hero are human sized although with super powers. Shows like this often have themes or templates for the monsters (which can change during a series). In this case its weapon-animal. For instance in this episode, V3 faces off against Knife-Armadillo, a human sized armadillo with one hand (claw?) that can turn into a knife which can also be shot. It can also roll into a large armored ball and hurl itself at foes. Waiting in the wings is Buzz Saw-Lizard.
18. The Towering Inferno (1974)* (Fox Studio Classics 75 Years 4 Disc Set)
The world's tallest building catches on fire because corners were cut during construction. Hundreds of people are endangered. Big budget, star studded Irwin Allen disaster picture is full of tense and exciting moments. Only near the end, after almost three hours of fire fighting, did I feel like the fire was being a little too cooperative with the screen writers. Recommended.
19. Blade (1998)* (4 Film Favorites Blade Collection)
Semi-vampire (born of a woman who was just bit by a vamp) Blade fights against the real thing. Entertaining but not exceptional. Wesley Snipes is tough and taciturn as Blade. I'm not familiar with the comic book character so I don't know how close this is to the original.

20. Gun Brothers (1968)* R3 DVD
Gun Brother, a master of disguise, is one of the leaders of the resistance opposing the Japanese occupation during World War 2. Inspector Ma, working for the Japanese, suspects that Gun Brother is really playboy Chi Yiu Tung but has trouble proving it. I'm sure I thought this Shaw Brothers film was a hard core crime title when I bought it but it turned out to be a very fun alternative. A bit like a wartime Republic serial at times, this is full of gun fights, chases, and fisticuffs along with a little humor concerning the ladies that Chi Yiu Tung flirts with. Very satisfying Saturday afternoon fare.

21. Dark of the Sun (1968)* (Warner Archive Collection)
In the Congo, mercenaries and soldiers use a train to rescue civilians and diamonds from a mine in rebel territory. Gritty, sometimes shocking story with some good performances and several very intense moments. Had a more serious tone than I expected. Recommended.

22. Tim Tyler's Luck (1937) Chapter 2: "Dead Man's Pass"
Tim rides into the jungle looking for information about his father. He looses his horse when attacked by a lion but runs into a band of ivory traders. Suddenly, the group is attacked by savage apes who rain large rocks upon the men!

23. Tim Tyler's Luck (1937) Chapter 3: "Into the Lion's Den"
Continuing his search for his father, Tim sees a horde of savages preparing to attack a safari led by Lora Lacey who is searching for Spider Webb. Time warns the safari but fleeing into hills to take a stand they run into a pride of lions. Attempting to escape, Tim and Lora are brought down by the beasts. Good (but obvious) use of stock footage and authentic looking sets continue to give a nice jungle feel.

24. The Stranglers of Bombay (1959)* (Icons of Adventure)
In India, a captain in the East India Company suspects that a mysterious cult is responsible for thousands of disappearances, including an entire caravan. Fun movie with a good sense of place and a couple of creepy scenes that might have been out of a horror movie. The climax is a little disappointing after a good buildup and for some reason I couldn't get totally involved with the story. Roger Delgado, the first Master in Dr. Who, has a small part.

25. Delta Force (1986)* (3 Pack Action)
Chuck Norris and the rest of Delta Force must rescue hostages taken from a hijacked plane who have been scattered around Beirut. Well done action sequences are spot on but the movie as a whole runs about twenty minutes too long. Sometimes the action lacks a sense of urgency but its always entertaining.

26. Tim Tyler's Luck (1937) Chapter 4: "The Ivory Trail"*
Tim is captured by Spider Webb who discovers, from a letter Tim has, that Tim's father has stumbled upon the location of the Elephant's Graveyard. Webb's men ambush Prof. Tyler and take him to their swamp hideout in the Jungle Cruiser. Sgt. Gates of the Ivory Patrol is following the armored vehicle when he is attacked by a leopard! I've always liked Jack Mulhall who plays Sgt. Gates although I've never seen him in a starring role. Here he plays an energetic and upright member of the IP.

27. Tim Tyler's Luck (1937) Chapter 5: "Trapped in the Quicksands"*
Tim and his father are reunited at Spider's hideout. Befriending his guard, Tim persuades him to guide him through the quicksand area. Chasing down the escapees, Spider orders the causeway over the quicksand to be destroyed and Tim is caught in the explosion! I'm unfamiliar with Norman Willis who plays Spider Webb but he makes a great villain. He can sneer with the best of them and he has a tough sounding, snarly kind of voice.
28. Brotherhood (1976)* R3 DVD
Four blood brothers rob a jewelry store. Three quickly die, one after the other leaving the youngest, Liao Da Jiang. Seeking revenge he gets deeply involved with a powerful Hong Kong gang. A darned good movie, filled with power plays, double crosses, and lots of Shaw Brothers martial arts action. Not particularly gritty and some of the gangsters seem a bit too goodhearted. Quite a fine climactic battle with Liao taking on the worst of the baddies. Recommended.

29. Delta Force 2: The Colombian Connection (1990)* (3 Pack Action)
Chuck Norris and a scaled down Delta Force (about eight guys and one helicopter) take on a South American drug lord. A lot of fun. The action starts sooner than in the first movie and this one is generally better paced but the end seems to go on too long. This one is also just a little less involving than the original. The guy who plays the general is either an insanely bad actor or, more probably, is just hamming it up a lot.
30. Puppet On A Chain (1971)*
Two American agents are sent to Amsterdam to uncover a heroin smuggling ring. Excellent crime drama. Not wall to wall action but interest is maintained by the investigation and Amsterdam itself. The boat chase is very well done and the end is exciting and suspenseful. Highly recommended.
31. The Poseidon Adventure (1972)* (Fox Studio Classics 75 Years 4 Disc Set)
An ocean liner is flipped upside down by a tsunami. A small group of survivors try to make their way up to the hull of the ship in order to make an escape. Great, star studded film, totally absorbing. Its really a fascinating concept and well executed to boot. Carol Lynley in hot pants is a huge bonus. Recommended.
32. Tim Tyler's Luck (1937) Chapter 6: "The Jaws of the Jungle"*
Lora Lacey sets up a meeting with Spider Webb in order to lure him into a trap set by the Ivory Patrol. The plan needs to change though so Lora sends a message to Tim with her chimp Ju Ju who becomes stalked by both a lion and a leopard. Tim finds Ju Ju but the lion brings Tim down before he can reach the safety of a tree! Anthony Warde, one of my favorite serial villains, plays Spider Webb's lieutenant Drake. Warde appeared in many serials and although he's more sinister elsewhere he does a fine job here.

33. Eat My Dust (1976)* (Roger Corman's Cult Classics The Ron Howard Action Pack)
A sheriff's son "borrows" a top rated stock car to impress a girl. Mayhem follows. A great, fun movie. Basically two long car chases separated by a slow romantic interlude. Car stunts are well done and the humor works very well. The pacing is almost perfect and there is a great soundtrack by David Grisman. Highly recommended.
34. Firecracker (1981)* (Roger Corman's Cult Classics Lethal Ladies Collection)
A martial arts instructor goes to the Philippines looking for her missing sister and gets involved with death fights and a drug smuggling ring. An OK martial arts picture with some pretty well done fight scenes including a couple instances of topless boob-fu. Seems to drag just a little in spots though.
35. TNT Jackson (1974)* (Roger Corman's Cult Classics Lethal Ladies Collection)
A tough street fighter goes to Hong Kong looking for her missing brother and gets involved with a drug smuggling ring. Firecracker, with the same director and writer, borrowed heavily from this film but does it all much better. I was never convinced that star Jeanne Bell was ever doing any of the fighting thanks to liberal use of undercranking and obvious stunt person substitution. Interesting footage of a Chinese festival helps as does a slightly better boob-fu scene but overall Firecracker is just a better movie.
36.Too Hot to Handle (1977)* (Roger Corman's Cult Classics Lethal Ladies Collection)
A professional assassin begins having an affair with the Chief of Detectives of the Manilla police force who is investigating her crimes. Good movie with some interesting hits. Star Cheri Caffaro is very appealing even if her acting range is limited. Still a nice chemistry develops between her and the detective.
37. Grand Theft Auto (1976)* (Roger Corman's Cult Classics The Ron Howard Action Pack)
Two teenagers want to get married but the bride's parents object. She "borrows" her father's Rolls Royce and the two head for Vegas to get married. Mayhem follows. Not quite as "pure" as Eat My Dust but still plenty of car chase action. I got fewer laughs out of this one and found some things, like the radio announcer in the helicopter, distracting and thought they just slowed the movie down too much. Still, good fun. Recommended for auto chase fans.
38. Fighting Mad (1976)* (Action-Packed Double Feature)
Large corporation uses terrorist tactics to convince holdouts to sell their land for a development project. One farmer with anger management issues fights back but almost sacrifices everything he holds dear. Not an original plot but pretty well done. I think more backstory about the main characters would have increased involvement. Movie seems to promise things that it never quite delivers.
