Perhaps I'll add it to my queue for the upcoming week.

you all bring up some good points. Plus, what if I get a number of DVDs to impress people, and they still say, "your movies suck." I bought them for nothing.
I have an idea of what kind of films to get for my collection, movies that I'm actually interested in.
Thanks for all the suggestions!

Re: What DVDs to buy for my collection?
I had some DVDs over the years, movies I either bought 'cause they were on sale, or because I thought they looked good but I eventually lost or sold them.
Now I want to start a new DVD collection, and start it right. I've already bought a display shelf.
Now, what are the essential DVD must haves for a serious collector? I plan on buying up to 50 but don't know what kind of films to get.
I'm hesitant to buy "Scarface," but after reading many posts, I definitely need John Carpenter's 1982 Remake of "The Thing for my collection to be taken seriously. Any suggestions? Should I have an even amount of films from each genre? Are TV show DVDs okay? If there is a bare bones edition available for cheap, should I forget it and instead spring for the OOP Criterion/Special Edition?
Thanks!

I'm with the others. You should buy what you *like* and certainly *not* just to impress others! I could give you a list, as could many others here, but it would be films *I* like. I'm sure you would find some of them "boring". I know my wife does.
And *if* I loaned a DVD to someone and it wasn't returned I'd just not loan them a DVD again. Come to think of it... I *don't* loan DVDs/CDs/Books/etc. because they rarely come home in the condition in which they left.

Actually I bought Catwoman on Blu-Ray because it was 5 bucks. Watched it already once before on DVD and didn't care too much for it, but thought I'd give it another chance for that price. And I do appreciate bad movies anyways.

I've finally watched Catwoman. Not a good movie, but it was entertaining enough.

It sucks that by the time I found the right number and type of DVDs to display for guests, nobody even really cares about DVDs and physical media (outside of his forum).
