What could cause a DVD disc to look like this?

In all my years of collecting DVDs, I have never had a disc look like this:

This was bought about 4 years ago and sat in my closet until I recently sold it. The person returned it, but I wonder if they switched it.. I've never seen anything like it before. Could heat or moisture cause this or was something done to it after it was opened?

Anyone have any ideas?

I've had some which have a "cloudy" look, typically in splotches but nothing as bad as that in your photo. I don't know what causes it. A few of mine were on sets where one disk in a 2 disk slim-line case would have the material on the surface and the other would be perfectly clean. If it's the same as what I've had on some disks a little rubbing alcohol and a microfibre cloth will clean it right up.

Looks like the surface of the disc has been in contact with some kind of substance; mostly likely a spill or it got stuck on something.

1. Did you inspect the disc and play it before you sent it off?
2. Why did they return it? Was it the way it looked or that it didn't play?
3. Does it play now?

I think you've been duped. Looks like someone's been using that disc as their coffee coaster.

The disc was still sealed when I sent it. I haven't played it --- I hate to put it in my player. They said it was like that when they opened it.

I'm suspicious that they are scamming me, but since it was sealed I may have to bite the bullet and it's a big bullet.

Try what BobO'Link mentioned: Some rubbing alcohol and hand-buff it with a microfibre cloth, if something was spilled on it this should remove it safely. If not, take it to a [used] video game store and have them "professionally" buffer the scratches and whatnot off the disc - most places only charge $1 to do this.

...that was spread on it about 30 years ago and left to rot...-eek-

I've never encountered a new unopened DVD looking like that, I'm sure anything is possible but DAMN. I'd be more inclined to believe you got scammed but since there will be little chance to prove it, you may be stuck. Just on the off chance though, I don't think I'd want to do busness with that person again. I swear that DVD looks like it's molting, are you sure it wasn't stored in some variably extreme temperatures or something? I've never seen anything like that, no idea what would cause something like that. -kd5-

I'd boil it.

No.... I'm not kidding.

To me it looks like some sort of polish was on a cloth and the DVD was placed on top of the polish and allowed to dry. Then they peeled it off and what I see is the residue left on it.

If you look at the left side of the Disc it can be seen at least 3 lines running from the edge towards the center. Like crevices of a cloth.

Fuck that. If it was sealed, that's not on you. That's on the manufacturer. I don't see how a buyer can claim that's your fault in the first place. Shitty for both parties, but if this an ebay thing, I'd only offer half back.

What it looks like to me is the polishing agent they use to buff out DVDs. The local used DVD places have machines that they spray this stuff on the disc, then spin it in a machine to buff it out. Since you sent it sealed, could the buyer have tried to do this polishing stuff themselves and botched it up?

This really looks like a scam to me. The closest thing I have seen to that was on some software CDs once. They were put in vinyl or plastic notebook sleeves (clear plastic on both sides, not the kind with one soft black or white side) and pressed hard against. It either stuck to something that was in the sleeve with it (like the insert) or it reacted with the plastic case. I don't know how much money you are talking about, but if it's a lot I would tell him you sent him a factory sealed dvd as he requested and there is no way you could have known it was defective, so he has to take it up with the manufacturer.

The problem is this DVD is long OOP and worth well over 50 bucks. Like I said, I bought this from DD about 4 years ago and kept it inside in my closet. The disc looks even worse than the scan ... I have well over 10,000 discs and have seen thousands more and there is nothing that remotely looks this bad. I agree --- it looks like something was applied to it and now they want me to take the hit. The buyer even admitted she bought 2 (one from another seller)--- which doesn't make sense for this kind of high-priced movie.

Try boiling it to clean it.
There are certainly enough threads on this site about boiling.
