Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 7th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (Oct 1-31) P

So uh, yeah. 228 movies watched. Yikes. I didn't think 200 could be remotely possible (Just ask Trevor!)
And to think that I pushed myself too hard last year But as I mentioned earlier, owning a DVR (Along with the inclusion of wireless access through DirecTV & HD channel-added packages) helped create a flawless marathon. Unlike in the past when I had to wait (Netflix arrivals) and wait (Cable channel to show something)
The only thing that I missed was that, since I was continously watching movies, it didn't give me enough time to check out participants' reviews which is something I always look forward to doing. It certainly looks like there's now enough time to do so. Also, and this could be a newbie thing, but I never realized how tough it could be to complete a checklist! Kudos to anyone who has been able to complete one in such a short amount of time!

As is the occasion before I get to the annual awards, random facts/trivia/thingies I encountered this challenge:

-Non-stop puking
Very early in the challenge, I asked myself if I should include vomit sequences in my tallies because they kept on popping up (From a character seeing a corpse, to puking out of fear, to drunkeness, to motion sickness, to transformation sickness....Even frickin' creatures and animals were puking) But still, the barfing would just not let up!!! It was only fitting (In Slaughtered Vomit Dolls) to have someone chuck into a cup and drink it back up.

-Too bad I lost count of how many cameos Kane Hodder made.

-Snow rules!
It seemed like a good luck charm to find a movie that that took place in snowy landscapes. I ended up liking nearly every one I saw (Frozen,The Last Winter,Trollhunter,30 Days of Night....Even Orca wasn't too bad!)

-Is nudity forbidden in Thailand? I just found it odd that a hot chick was taking a shower with her clothes on. There really are some cuties over there too. (Jessica Alba genes)

-Just when I thought John Carradine couldn't look any older.....

-"Why the brothas (And sistas) always gotta die?"
This certainly was a rough marathon for them There were only 3 movies I saw/remembered that had them making it out alive.
Although I later read online that a character from a certain movie was originally supposed to die, but was changed into having him live thanks to test screenings. And in another movie, you have to stick to the end of the credits to find another survivor.

-Never knew Michael Gough was capable of playing such @$$holes!

-"They come in 2's"
On several occasions, I would run into (Unplanned) connecting themes all within the same day:
-Isolation ending with pregnancy. Art of the devil beginning with one.
-Abortion themes in The Fly and Night School.
-Back to back POV shots of the killer attacking his/her victims in Oblong Box and Shuttered Room.
-Though many days apart, I saw two movies that had Mexican characters saying their variation of the "We don't need no stinkin'" line.
And lastly, it was very interesting to have Tony Roberts, of all people, to open (Amityville 3-D) and close (Popcorn) this marathon.

Awards time!

Best Movie(s) (First time viewing)
The Addiction/The Hunger-Two vampire films that scored big time with the acting, the content, the styles, all that good stuff.
Simon, King of the Witches-Not pure horror, but I felt this was the best dark comedy I saw this marathon.
Insidious/Paranormal Activity 3-The only two fright flicks that came mighty close of spooking me out.
Evilspeak-The only movie that's ever come close to making me holler "ALL HAIL SATAN!" Thought this movie did a good job of building up the tension for a kickass conclusion!
The Man who Changed his Mind-Actually wished it was longer (More humor could have been explored) but I still liked this very much.
Night of the Scarecrow-Not to be confused with DARK Night of the Scarecrow. Mediocre story, but this scarecrow turned out to be my favorite villain of this challenge.

Worst Movie(s)
Alone in the Dark II-This could have even been much, MUCH worse if Moseley and Henriksen weren't in it.
Blood of the Vampire-Cure for insomnia.
Revenge of Dr. X-The last half hour ain't that bad, but the first hour is excrutiating since you're stuck with the lead character (Who happens to be a complete dick) and the leading lady who's phonetic engrish pierces your skull.
Transylmania-Thought this was even worse than Stan Helsing
Brotherhood of Blood-An epic tale of humans vs vampires vs evil vampires.....And it all takes place in a couple of bedrooms. Poor Sid Haig struggles to get his lines through those awful fangs.

Imagine My Surprise! (aka "holy shit, I actually enjoyed that!")
The Beast with a Million Eyes-I'm a sucker for those "All animals attack" movies (ala Day of the Animals) so I was pleased to find out that this ended up being one of them. It was also very refreshing to find a 50's horror flick where the main characters have background issues.
Zombies! Zombies! Zombies!-Aside from the dumb faux intro (Even if it had Tiffany Shepis), I surprisingly enjoyed every other scene that followed. Extremely hot cast for such a no-budget flick too!
A Slit-Mouthed Woman-Made me want to seek out more of these 60-minute J-Horror pornos!
Open Water 2: Adrift-Plodding and dopey in the early going, but I really got into it when the desperation set in. It turned out to be one of the more grueling tales of my challenge.
Voodoo Man-As with The Ape Man, another Beaudine/Lugosi feature that I ended up having fun with. Great to see John Carradine's Torgo to Lugosi's Manos. Plus, the women managed to look sexy here. Something I don't often see when it comes to 1940's B-flicks.

Biggest Disappointment(s)
The Last Exorcism-Very intriguing and creepy in the early going, but as every other reviewer mentions, it's all shot to hell (Literally, )
[Rec] ˛-Everything else is well made. I just didn't like how the sickos powers evolved so greatly.
Return of the Ape Man-What??? I wanted to see Lugosi's Ape Man again! Not some damn piano-playing cave man!
Demented-I kinda had some hope for this (Rape-revenge movie with Harry Reems) but this sucked. Lead actress, though very sexy, had the most annoying voice I've ever heard.

Best "Better on a 2nd viewing" movie
The Blair Witch Project-First time seeing it (In it's entirety) since it's theatrical release. The constant bickering gets annoying, but I still think this does a good job with the tension & mystery.

"WTF did I just watch?"
A Night to Dismember
The Revenge of the Living Dead Girls
Boardinghouse

Decadent Evil (Was this a TV episode?)

(Had to stretch it to about 10 this year)
Favorite Horror Babes:
Melissa George-Triangle
Sofya Skya-The Tomb
Catherine AND Marie-Pierre Castel-The Nude Vampire
Jessica Lucas-Amusement
Sabrina Salerno-Delirium
Kim Director-Book of Shadows:Blair Witch 2
Carmen Perez-The Rig
Michelle Bauer-Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers
Janine Reynaud-Succubus
Yurizan Beltrán-Werewolf in a Women's Prison

Spoiler:
The Boobage Award!:
For best nudity, the award goes to Bad Biology!

yeah Chad, you did a great job as usual.

I'm very happy with my list, only 1 or 2 I didn't care too much about but there were some really great surprises. I'm also glad I watched Sauna at the very end, awesome way to end the month and the challenge for me. I have been meaning to do it sooner but based on the trailer I thought it would be much darker and slower so I was scared of watching it on a day when I was super tired. But those were the quieckest 90 minutes ever the film flew by. I read some of the IMDB boards and some complained about it being slow. I didn't feel Like that at all. out of 31 movies only 1 was a repeat viewing and it was conscious since I wanted a bit more diversity in my viewing. I am running out of Giallo to watch though.

- Don't forget to PM me your top 3 choices for the 'best list' between now and up until I post the results thread. In the past there's been very few voting and if that's the case again I maybe forced to eliminate this prize category altogether next year. And I'd really prefer not to do that, so please show your support for those that put major time and effort into them by casting your vote.

- Don't forget to indicate your first time viewings, formats viewed, your personal goal and, yes, even the number of equipment failures if you want them included in the stats. And I'll take suggestions for anything else to include.

As far as the results thread goes, it'll take a minimum of 2 weeks before it's ready to go up. And with the uber participation this year it might be a little longer than usual. In other words, I can't give a specific time frame. That also means I'll be sending PMs to all the prize winners around the time it's posted. So periodically check your PM inbox for that so I can collect your address and send it to the sponsors as soon as possible. I'll also send an email as well if you provided it.

I think that's everything.
Here's my suggestion for getting more votes, add the rule that you can't win if you don't vote. Seems fair.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 7th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (Oct 1-31) P

Towards the end of last month, I just dogged it. I couldn't muster up enough initiative to even select a movie-- I just left it up to the television to pick my final film for me. Luckily enough, that movie turned out to be The Invisible Man. I finished eight films short of my previous record and twelve films short of my first OHMC. Still, I had a (mostly) good time.

Of my first-time viewings, the one film that I would recommend without hesitation is Ishiro Honda's The H-Man. It plays out like a hybrid between a cops-and-gangsters movie and a sci-fi monster flick. The special effects range from inspired to Nickolodeon's You Can't Do That on Television. Yumi Shirakawa (Rodan, The Mysterians) is a stunning sight to behold as nightclub singer Chikako.

When Bad Dreams was originally released, esteemed critic Roger Ebert referred to it as a "vomitorium" and only awarded it a half-star. It makes me wonder what he would award it in light of the advent of films like The Butcher (2009), a film that aggressively attempts to induce vomiting in the viewer through shaky camera work and loud noise. I suspect that he would be just slightly more charitable these days.

Thanks to Chad and DVD Talk for giving my compulsive viewing and collecting habits a sense of structure!

Day 31 & The Wrap Up! http://celluloidterror.blogspot.com/...1-wrap-up.html

For discussions sake here is the "stats" section from the post

Entries- 108 (100 feature films, 4 tv (120 minutes compiled), 1 short film (90 minutes compiled), 3 wild cards) (previous best was 107)

First Time Viewings (Feature Films) - 50 of 100 feature films = 50%

Average Rating /10 (Feature Films) - 6.76

Favorite 1st Time Viewings - [REC]2, Sledgehammer, The Deadly Spawn, Swamphead

Worst Movie - Slaughtered Vomit Dolls (you already knew that)

Biggest Surprise - Swamphead (I expected to like it, but not that much)

Biggest Disappointment - Halloween 6 producer's cut

Random Thought To Sum It Up - The whole Vomit Gore genre can go fuck itself and Kevin Smith can join them.

Going to check out Red State toda... what?!? Say it isn't over. You guys move on to the comedy challenge but I'm going to keep the horror movies gushing. I hope Red State isn't as putrid as I've heard. Umm... I guess it's pointless to wish for another Horror Film Club revival at this point.

Thanks very much to Chad for hosting the challenging and pulling in all the contests/prizes!

It would be the owners prerogative. I have mine by genre.

For Example:

Action Horror would go in horror. Family Horror goes in the comedy section. Horror Musicals go in the musical section. Horror comedy is a little tricky and I just go with how it feels. Attack of the Killer Tomatoes = Comedy. ROTLD = horror. Spoofs = horror.

What makes it easier is having it by sub genre as well.

Here are the sub genres I use:

Classics & Hammer
Vampires
Werewolfs
When Sub-Genres Collide
Demons
Possession & Killer Rides
Witches and Warlocks
Zombies
Freddy, Jason, and Michael
Other Teen Slashers, Madmen and Revenge (60s & 70s)
Other Teen Slashers, Madmen and Revenge (80s)
Other Teen Slashers, Madmen and Revenge (90s & 00s)
Ghost and Haunted Houses
Hitchcock and Sequels
Killer Dolls
Small Creatures That Hurt People
Monsters
Re-Makes
Cannibals
Chainsaws In Texas
Short Stories
Parodies
Melting And/Or Exploding Homeless People
Documentaries
Television Shows
Other

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 7th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (Oct 1-31) P

There were a lot of great lists this year so it was hard to choose one. Maybe next year we can have an award for best/most participation in the discussion, too. Or maybe that can just be something mentioned in the results thread, commending those who added the most to the discussion threads. I'm not very tech savvy so I can't make my list look as good as some of the lists looked, but I worked my ass off writing my reviews for the movies I watched this year, and it looks like some others did too (SethDLH for one). Plus I think trevor deserves at least an honorable mention for his signature that helped most of us remember to post in the daily subset threads.

Really should finalize my list today while things are fresh in my mind, but I'm incredibly burned out on it all to be honest. Bit off more than I could chew this month, but I am strangely proud that I completed all the list oriented things and hit 100. So don't give up ViewAskewbian, movie nerds do find women to marry them, although it took me 44 years to find the right one.
Works great for me with several thousand. Makes picking what I want to watch much easier.

Horror movie? Lets check out the horror section. Not; horror movie, ok lets try to find one.

I decided to type up a list of all the horror movies in my collection, so next year I won't have to pile stuff up to make it easier to choose. And I'll probably write up a list of comedies for this month's challenge as well.

I keep my stuff seperated by country/language and then alphabetical. only difference are for spaghetti westerns and Shaw brothers, they have they own section. American,Canadian, British, Irish et al are all under the same section and divided alphabetically. Latin and Spanish under one section and so on. Chinese, Japanese and Korean are under their own section but the rest of the asian titles are all together, if any one country's representation grows significantly i will devide into its own section.

This one stumped me for a long time too. I originally went by genre but ended up with way too many genres and too much confusion over what goes where. Then I went alphabetical. That was ok for a while, but mostly I missed looking at all the shelves of just horror movies. So I ended up going back to a semi-genre driven alphabetical hybrid.

I ended up with some genre seperations, and then a "general" section for everything else. I have seperate horror, sci-fi, superhero/comic, holidays, music, kids/family, comedy and TV sections. Some of these are pretty tiny sections as I don't have many comedy, music, or holiday movies. Then everything else gets put together. It's mostly action/adventure and drama, but so many of those blur the genre edges that it was just easier that way.

Each genre is alphabetized. For the most part the genre lines in the ones that are seperated are clear, but for ones that can go either way I go by what I think of first. For example the Alien movies are in horror, not sci-fi. There are a couple sub-sections, such as all the Hitchcock movies are together on their own shelf, Argento has his own sections, stuff like that. Movies series that are named differently still get put together under the most likely place for me to remember them, like the Hannibal movies are under H, and all of Romero's Dead movies are under D (I think...).

It's certainly not a perfect system, but it works for me.

It really all depends on the size of your collection and what works for you. Plus, always error on how you see it not on how others might see it. It's your collection. And if some genres blur too much, just combine them such as Sci-Fi and Horror for example. Or just pull out, say Horror, from the pack if it is a favorite.

I would like to say thanks to chad for running another amazing challenge. No disrespect to the other challenges, but every year the Horrror challenge shows its the best and biggest. I am not gonna lie though, I was as exited for Nov. 1st, as I am for Oct. 1st... I was just a little burned out this year. I was burnt out with 108, so I am amazed some of these people could watch 10 movies a day all month long.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 7th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (Oct 1-31) P

You can take the dvdtalker out of the horror challenge but you can't take the horror challenge out of the dvdtalker.

Last night I double-featured Malevolence and Bereavement (a prequel to Malevolence) and was pleasantly surprised. Neither are great films but they both were impressive since one guy basically did it all. The director, writer, producer, editor, music, and who knows what other duties were performed by one guy. People who are the Lenny Kravitz of movies always impress me because you have to have such a strong vision and work ethic to do it all like that (trust me...I know how hard it is and how much work it takes because I have a friend living in Hollywood now who does all of the above and still has a hard time getting anything greenlit).

Anyway...the first movie does suffer from lack of budget but I felt it is was nice turnaround from what you normally see (a slasher stalking criminals) and I liked the ending which is something I can't say for a lot of horror movies. Yeah, the acting was pretty bad for much of the time but that's what you typically get with low budget horror.

The prequel shows how much budget and experience help. Really nice looking film with better actors (even a couple of names!), stronger written characters, better lighting, etc. What's funny is I gave both movies ***1/2 stars out of ***** with the edge going to Bereavement. Again, not classics by any stretch but it shows the progression of a budding filmmaker and is a nice change of pace from the normal direct to video horror films.

By the way, I didn't finish the last 8 nightly films so I plan to catch up with those over the coming month(s) and just post thoughts in their review thread. I am going to imagine that the horror film club still exists.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 7th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (Oct 1-31) P

I had a great time with the challenge as always. Missed my goal due to the unexpected run by the Cardinals. Here are a few "awards" from my list:

Best First Time Viewing: Let Me In - Can't wait to watch this one again!

I'm going to guess you watched Sick Nurses?

Ase Wang is still the best part of that piece of crap film.

Doing the whole only FTV thing this challenge added a bit of difficulty, mostly to completing the checklist. I had to cheat a bit here and there like watching the From Dusk Till Dawn Commentary and then parts 2 & 3 for the Film and at Least Two of its Sequels check. But it was really fun. However not an angle I am planning on doing again for future challenges.

Amazon evily sent me the Resident Evil BR Quadrillogy a day late on Oct 1st and I had to wait all month to watch it (since it wasn't a FTV).

Will try to finish up my list and awards and stats today....maybe.

Great job Chad! Thanks for hosting the challenge.

Now I need to scrub my brain of all these ghosts and ghouls.

Wow... I just got back from the doctor and they moved the delivery of my second child up by two weeks to this Friday. I had though of the horror movie challenge as a chance to goof off before adding more responsibility but little did I know. Had a blast, now time to pay up by staying up all night to clean the house/car.
