Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 7th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (Oct 1-31) P

Was making good pace for 100 for the month, but bed ridden yesterday and have only managed to make it to the couch today, so I have some catching up to do.

Just watched '30 Days In Hell' the documentary supporting 'The Devils Rejects' and found it very entertaining and definitely a must watch.

Yeah, I thought the same thing. Has to be some made for a "revival" showing. The bag shapes are a little different, too. Couldn't be fakes for profit, as who but five of us would look for one of those? My fav is the listing proclaiming that it is "Unused"!

Wait, no more horror film club? Man, I feel bad for not participating. It's like discovering I'm partly responsible for rabies or something.

Same here!

On the other hand, the remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street, which I finally watched last night....so unnecessary that it just made me sad.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 7th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (Oct 1-31) P

Let us know what you think of "Caver," Trevor. I honestly love it and don't get why some people hate it so much.

Just finished watching one of the movies I remember most from my childhood because it messed me up so bad back then. It's called "Encounter with the Unknown" and it's narrated by Rod Serling, whose voice makes it ten times scarier than it might otherwise be for me. It's probably really horrible, but I still love it today. I did a mini review for it at my blog:

Encounter with the Unknown

I'm trying to stick with movies that are more kid friendly today since I don't want to freak out my nieces too much (well, they're not really my nieces, but I've been friends with their mom since we were five, so they call me "Aunt Lillian"). Arionna is pretty tough and she can watch almost anything and laugh at it, but I still don't want to be the reason they need therapy some day!

The scant few threads we had during the Club's day were just clamoring for more Dick.

Wait....

Attempted jokes way beneath me aside, I'm probably more responsible for the death of the Club. The same people who would have participated probably also participate in our DVDTalk Challenges. So going from 3 to 10+ of them in a year's time probably used up a lot of the spare viewing time that would have been devoted to our attempted Clubs (Criterion and Horror).

So at least I now know who to blame...Dick and Trevor...and any other bastard participating in other challenges!

It would be nice to know if the people posting here would try supporting it at all again. Chad did a great job of running it and it was only around 2 movies a month. I enjoyed discovering several new movies and hearing people's feedback on them.

I don't know how everyone does all those other challenges during the year. Horror is about the only genre I could stomach an entire month of. Maybe some animation or anime. But holiday films and comedies for an entire month...no offense but yuck.

Shouldn't being bed ridden help your cause? A couple of years ago I was pretty sick in October. Couldn't sleep ... couldn't work. But I could lie like a vegetable in my bed and watch horror movies

You need to think more creatively Brian!

You could watch 100 horror films a month all year and have them fit into each other Challenge. Or 100 comedies, Criterions, etc etc

For example, I think there are at least 100 Christmas themed horror films out there.

On the Horror Club, my thoughts are that it could still work, but perhaps only one film a month. Or one subgenre a month, or director, or horror star. And you should run it, Chad does too much work for us.

Try to follow Chad's example? I would be laughed off the board. Too hard of an act to follow.

But I understand why it died. Just too little participation which I thought was odd for around here. Not to get too off topic but what dvdtalk challenge would you say is the most popular?

So happy this Challenge exists!

I've taken notes for 8/10 Questions for my Political Science test tomorrow and I need a Horror film break!

Well, none of us can live up the sheer awesomeness of this thread, but that shouldn't stop us from trying. Multiple other Challenges and many DVDTalk ongoing project threads get started all the time. Sure, it'd be tough to do anything horror related knowing Chad could do it better, but if you build it, some of us will come. Of course, I shouldn't be speaking for Chad. Perhaps if the interest materializes he'd do it again.

Not to rehash it so quickly, but I might actually like my throwaway idea of genre/director monthly threads instead of specific film threads. We'd have to use spoiler tags sometimes, but worth thinking about perhaps?

As to which Challenge is most popular; we could look at the page views, but I wouldn't be surprised if Horror had more views than all the others combined.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 7th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (Oct 1-31) P

I'm guilty of not fully supporting the horror club, too. I started strong, but honestly, life just started getting in the way. I quit even coming here at all much less keeping tabs on movie choices for the horror club.

I would be willing to try it again. I might even be willing to take a more active role in the organization of it this time and help relieve Chad, but I think those are things we can discuss next month. After all, we do this every October. We all get into the horror mode and think it's just going to go on forever, and then the next pretty challenge comes along and shakes her pretty can, and of course some of you just can't resist and then you just go off with the fresh new thing and abandon good old dependable horror to take care of the kids all alone. For the record, this is the only challenge in which I participate. I don't need another mistress.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 7th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (Oct 1-31) P

The Horror Club was a great idea but it just so happened that it got started around the time my computer busted and the only way to contribute was from the shitty browser on the ps3 which, to be honest, was just easier to sit it out. I still read the threads though.

Watched Chromeskull. I've been a fan of Robert Hall's since his Buffy/Angel days and this was, while not as good as the first film, still entertaining enough. His gore effects have gotten better with each film. Can't wait to see what he does in the future.

Just remember, all the other Challenges support horror as well. Don't ignore us 11 months of the year, come play in the other Challenges with a completely horror focus.

Just watched "Carver" again. It was as good as I remember it being from the last time I watched it, so it wasn't just the migraine making me delusional.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 7th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (Oct 1-31) P

I watched two adaptations of Stevenson's The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde: Victor Fleming's 1941 film and the 2001 filming of the Broadway musical. The Fleming version started out with much pontificating that figured "good" as Victorian and "bad" as partying and disliking church. However, once Spencer Tracy started doing his thing, the film really picked up. Lana Turner and Ingrid Bergman were so wonderful.

The musical is one of my guilty pleasures. I got the chance to see it on Broadway, and the film was one of the first DVDs that I owned. The music and story are fun, but David Hassellhoff's singing and acting leaves a lot to be desired. Of course, his involvement is the only reason the project came to fruition so I guess I cannot really complain since it allows me to watch some great musical numbers.

I'm streaming it now, almost finished.

I was worried at first, as I typically hate "torture porn" films. But for a film sort of in that genre, this is pretty good.

mrcellophane, you should watch the 1931 pre-code Jekyll & Hyde - the sexual aspect of Hyde's character is much more explicit than in the Tracy version, which makes for a far more interesting film.

You're right, you're right. I should participate in the other challenges, too. I remember when the animated challenge was going on thinking about all the eligible things I had watched that month. If I did any other challenge, it would definitely be on a smaller level than this one.

Checking this out now, and am very glad that I saw your post on this movie.

Decent flick with not bad acting or storyline given it probably had very little budget.

I recommend this to anyone that wants a nice little movie that falls in under the 90 minute mark

Not too early at all. If you've got something spill it while it's still fresh in your mind. I'm constantly taking notes from here and adding them to the OHMC8 planning folder.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 7th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (Oct 1-31) P

I'm pretty disappointed right now. It was my goal to watch "The Dark Secret of Harvest Home" this year as part of the horror challenge, since it's a movie I never got to watch as a kid, and I've been looking forward to it all year. It's available on youtube and I was planning to watch it today. So I go online to the website that has rounded up all the youtube videos of the movie and I happened to glance at their "summary" of the movie, and it's only three lines long and it GIVES AWAY THE END OF THE MOVIE!!! Seriously? HELLO, some of us don't want to know how the movie ends BEFORE WE SEE IT. GRRRRR. I could still watch it, but now that I know how it ends my motivation is gone. I probably would have guessed the ending anyway, but that's not the point. How can you have a three-line summary that STILL manages to give away the end of the movie?

Maybe I'll just watch "Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte" again.

Would Phantom of the Opera (1943) count for the Musical category? There are several opera numbers.
