Not sure if it's already been asked but, regarding the checklist, can one movie be used for multiple categories?

You're reminding me that I have a book of short stories that were turned into horror films, e.g. the ones that were made into PHANTOM OF THE OPERA and THE FLY, to name the only two I remember. That would be worth digging out for this. I also have John W. Campbell's "Who Goes There?," the basis for THE THING, somewhere. I must have tons of others packed away.

Of course, there's gonna be a few die-hards that try for no repeats and, well, with 86 entries it's gonna be one helluva challenge. Muahahahahaha!

Hadn't heard of it, but it's on the wishlist now! Sounds interesting.
You may have already read these, but they are all under 300 pages and ones I enjoyed:
The Haunting of Hell House by Shirley Jackson
The Mist by Stephen King
Carmilla by J. Sheridan Le Fanu
For myself, I'd already been planning a re-read of The Exorcist soon, so I'll be doing that next month.

But just glancing I already see a few actors on the list that have worked together in the genre. It's virtually impossible to not have the 'Six degrees of Kevin Bacon' effect unless you list nothing but totally obscure independent films and actors.

So who's going to be the last volunteer for the subset list? We hit 30 with Trevor. Just one more person and I can start piecing it together.
Submissions are now open for the 31 Films Subset list. And already we're two days ahead of last year!
1. Make sure your pick(s) aren't a duplicate from the previous lists:
2. Make sure it's widely available through Netflix, online retailers, etc. and obviously not on the verge of going OOP. It does not have to be a Netflix Instant Watch title. If it is great, but don't feel you have to limit yourself to their limited selection. And let me know if it's streaming anywhere and I'll include the link when the thread goes up.
3. Try and match it up with a theme nights category so the two lists can be synced:
And as far as the selections themselves, they can be anything from mainstream to obscure or just something you feel is an underrated hidden gem that deserves more recognition. Just keep in mind that if you go too obscure your thread probably won't see much in the way of discussion.
How many of your picks gets chosen is dependent on the number of people participating. Being this is about group discussion the people take precedence over the picks. The rest is chosen via group voting and black magic.
I'll keep this open for a week -or- until we reach 31 people.

That endeavor should be worthy of a prize category.

Edit: This is by no means a promise since I'll probably be too lazy to do it

Heck yeah! If we could get it below 30 I'd have to go for it. I can finish the move next year.

That's the one I was planning on reading. I don't think I've read it since I was a child. Another good one would be Mary Shelley's Frankenstein.

The Haunting of Hill House has one of my most favorite opening paragraphs:
Speaking of Matheson, if you haven't read I Am Legend, I highly recommend it. Also +1s to Dracula and Frankenstein. A few other relatively short horror novels/novellas that have been made into movies:
The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson
The Midwich Cuckoos by John Wyndham (adapted into Village of the Damned)
Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury
The Other by Thomas Tryon
The Hellbound Heart by Clive Barker (adapted into Hellraiser)
The Girl Next Door by Jack Ketchum
World War Z by Max Brooks (movie slated to come out Dec 2012)
I have 17 movies on tap to cover the 19 "person" items on the checklist, but most of those movies involve 2 (or more) of the people -- I was going for a chain connecting them all, rather than fewest-possible-films. There are 4 people/pairs that I couldn't directly link to anyone else on the checklist; I had to get kind of creative (read: cheat) to bring those 4 into my chain. The most surprising of those (for me) is Ted Raimi/Reggie Bannister. They connect to each other via Wishmaster, and technically Ted Raimi and Ken Foree were both in the web mini-series 30 Days of Night: Dust to Dust (which is only about 30 minutes long in its entirety), but they have no other horror movie credits in common with anyone else on the checklist.
Going for fewest films to cover all 19, the lowest I can manage is 11 movies. Those 11 films probably cover a fair number of other items on the checklist, but definitely not all of them. But it's a good start!
No live organism can continue for long to exist sanely under conditions of absolute reality; even larks and katydids are supposed, by some, to dream. Hill House, not sane, stood by itself against its hills, holding darkness within; it had stood so for eighty years and might stand for eighty more. Within, walls continued upright, bricks met neatly, floors were firm, and doors sensibly shut; silence lay steadily against the wood and stone of Hill House, and whatever walked there, walked alone.
Another one by Shirley Jackson that I enjoyed is We Have Always Lived in the Castle. And for a work clearly inspired by Jackson's Haunting, there's Richard Matheson's Hell House (which was adapted into the film The Legend of Hell House).Speaking of Matheson, if you haven't read I Am Legend, I highly recommend it. Also +1s to Dracula and Frankenstein. A few other relatively short horror novels/novellas that have been made into movies:

And yes, it is a lot of work. It's still very much a work in progress for me. I'm on the third and what should be final variation of my stand for the "screen" I use, though it still needs some touch-ups to really be complete. Then there's the outdoor speakers I still want to buy, which will then need to be mounted, and the wall plates I'm planning on installing ... Yes, it's a lot of work, but it has been one of the best entertainment investments I've made. So much fun.
Sorry, didn't mean to derail things, but I can get caught up in talking about the outdoor theater because a lot of blood, sweat and tears went into it. Well, blood and sweat at least. I can't wait to use it for the challenge, though. I have a friend who's planning on trying to come down one weekend because she wants to have a Death Bed/Motel Hell double feature night. Yes, I finally broke down this year and bought Death Bed!

I just tried to see how few movies could complete the checklist and threw in the towel. That is a lot of research work.
For anyone interested in a head start you can knock off Klaus Kinski, Michael Gough, Ken Foree, Barbara Crampton, Terence Fisher, Hazel Court, James Bernard, Vincent Price, Lon Chaney jr, the 1940s, 1950s and 1980s if you watch Venom (81), From Beyond (86), Curse Of Frankenstein (57) and Abbot & Costello Meet Frankenstein (48)

I submit Vargtimmen [Hour of the Wolf], a 1968 Horror/Drama directed by Ingmar Bergman that is available for streaming from Netflix. I haven't seen it myself, so I'm recommending it blindly but I've been on a Bergman kick of late and in any event I thought it was the kind of odd flavor the subset could use. If this should be an unpopular choice, I'll rescind and offer a substitute but it's my first choice.

It's cold, dark and thick fog is filling the air. I have never wanted it to be October more, tonight would be the perfect night for a marathon.
I'd be happy with Hour of the Wolf being a subset, it's one I've been meaning to check off for a long time.

Yup. I love Bergman because he didn't shy away from making a horror film to express whatever he wanted to. He only made a couple but they certainly weren't of any lesser quality.

I've been going through my collection, trying to find the shortest way to finish the checklist but I'm not finding the overlap that I thought I would. I'll post what I have when I'm done.
